Did he pretend? Or did he really lose it at the last minute? THAT unanswered question is what makes the ending so great.

The movie that turned me on to Cagney!
"Let's go say a prayer for a boy who couldn't run as fast as me..."

Angels with Dirty Faces is one of the great gangster films. James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan and George Bancroft are top notch. The Dead End Kids steal the picture and would later go on to make They Made Me a Criminal with John Garfield.

Cagney at his very best!....and the DEAD END KIDS as well...don't get no better than this! I really miss these actors, they kept me company over 50 years ago as a kid in Chicago on the late show WGN WHEN MOVIES WERE MOVIES...ch9.

Of course, we'll never KNOW for sure whether or not Rocky actually DID turn yellow at the end. But seeing as it's Jimmy Cagney, I think we'd better assume he didn't.

In an interview Cagney said the ending was intentionally ambiguous so that the viewer would have to decide if Rocky went yellow or not. Imagine a movie that makes you think! :)

I love how John says, "...THEY don't make movies like this, any more..." What are ya talkin' about, Mac? YOU make movies, for crying out sakes...

This movie is just pure Warner Bros. goodness at is most raw late 30s Warners is the best and this was a good example of that one of those examples of the Warner Bros. goodness of the late 30s

This was not a "good movie" but a GREAT MOVIE!!!
Also, Humphrey Bogart did not have a "small role" in this. He was a major part of this film!

Hm. Was that evocative NYC opening really filmed in real slums in Manhattan or was it on a Warners set in Burbank? IMDb claims the only NY location was Sing Sing.

I have always wondered that too. I think it might have been stock footage.
The Church in that scene looks like the one on Father Demo Square in the Village. .

it was actually a warner bros set that he thought was real footage. i thought it was real too, but found out later on its something they shot and put into alot of different movies. i forget if this was the first one they used it for or not

Love this movie!! It's not corny. It's a great slum movie and if you weren't raised in the inner city you don't know s***. Take this movie over "Bringing up Baby" any time.

John Landis is so OFF about the end of this picture. He says that Rocky Sullivan "performs" and acts as though he's scared going in to the chair. But the thing is,
you never really know. IS he scared? Or is he doing what Father Connelly asks of him as a last, selfless act? And not knowing is what makes the ending great.

Nothing corny about this movie. I don't like the patronizing tone in your voice either! This is one of THE GREATEST movies ever made and let me tell you something sucker....I would take this movie over Casablanca anyday. I'm so sick of you eggheaded so called experts cramming (the pardon the expression.....greatest movie ever made....ugh ) Citizen Kane down everyone's throat which is a movie I have yet to be able to sit through!!!!! Orson Welles once said that a film director is the perfect refuge for the mediocre. John Landis seem to be what he had in mind. A jumped up no talent with a beard who shouts "action and cut" and yet masquerades as an authority on all things film." what fools these mortals be"

    • @peterbstrong
      @peterbstrong 7 років тому +2

Speaking of Orson...in an interview before he died in London, he said Cagney was" maybe the greatest movie star who ever lived". Shows how talent-smart he really was!

Cagney was special. His ebullient vibrancy was totally captivating. Most actors seem pedestrian by comparison.

The best actor to come out of Warners at that time...was not Cagney or Bogart or Raft or Robinson...its the great John Garfield!!!
