If you like this type of more "casual chat" video, I will definitely make more in the future! As for the results of the 4000 subscriber poll, I will be making "A week in my journals" video where I film every time I journal sometime in June, after we move :)
This is awesome! I’ve been doing a no buy since the beginning of 2023, and have JUST used all my Traveler Company inserts, most of my washi, and I went from three Simply Gilded Sticker albums to one. And now I’m out of stickers that I use all the time, so I’m buying what I need and am being very cautious replenishing my stashes.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for talking about the over spending and over accumulation in the planner/journal/crafting community. FOMO is real and so is the stress from having to much clutter. I find it easier to create with less and we should be encouraging each other to use what we have. I love the low to no spend approach to our hobbies and I am doing it too. No guilt for what has been done in past and being more mindful going forward. :-)
You’re so welcome!!! I 100% agree, it can be wild to see people spend so much sometimes! No guilt is key, moving forward with gratefulness and a changed perspective works wonders 😊
Thank you for this video, Emily. I appreciate that you're coming from a place of wanting to use your stationery and not simply saving money. I also love the idea of "net negative" swaps. Now looking up journaling meetups in my area-I hope I can find something. Thanks for another great video!
I love seeing more of this type of no/low buy and more mindful spending habits about stationery, great video! The hobby is so fun, but wow things accumulate quick if you're not paying attention. Like you said about washis lasting forever, I have washis that are so old they're getting unusable because the glue is going bad. Which is such a shame! I've been on a no buy since december 2022, and while I have purchased some things, it's still much less than I would have if I hadn't made that conscious decision. I bought one ink this year - but I also used up five bottles (they were low to begin with, not five full bottles)! So that's very cool. And it feels so good using things up, and also trying to figure out if what I see online that sparks my interest resembles something I already own. And it usually does :) Hopefully your no buy continues well throughout june!
That’s amazing, good for you!! It must feel great to use them up 🤩 I’ve noticed the same thing with my washi tapes too, it’s a waste!! I think it will go past June, you’ve definitely inspired me to keep going!! 💖
Thank you for sharing 😊❤! I'm inspired by what you said about translating that dopamine hit from the buying process, to the using the items process. I forget that the time it takes to browse IG reels that feature new items, and the website product pages themselves, as time that could be used toward using what you have. Such a good reminder!
Great post Emily and shows how much you can be appaulded, 👋👋 and brilliant comments from your subscribers, this has been so me and now empowering to get this fabulous hobby under control, I have even now started un subscribing from others who I have followed for years to whom have now started to focus more on their buying and love for their hauls, sadly more than their actually planning. I get it that you need to find your flow from the so many planners and accessories that are out there, but some youtube infulencers are still over many years down the line are still strugglying to get organised, but could open up a stationery shop with all their supplies they have, which actually must be so overwhelming for them, gladly I am free from this. I couldnt believe some of the videos watched where these "planners" nearly had a melt down with the hobonichi website, so sad to see people get to this highened energy, where so many other awful things are happening in this world, and sadly gives a big shout out to where their own mental health is. Its a notebook at the end of the day to plan, journal, make memories and enjoy. Empower your self with the no buy, use what you have its great fun and really encourages and nurtures your Creativity, Happy Planning and Journallying everyone 😊
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I definitely agree, I think everyone is on their own journey like you said but it makes me sad when it seems like buying the stationery is the focus instead of using it! The no buy has really helped put things in perspective for me and help alleviate the stress of accumulating more and more instead of getting joy out of using it. Glad to have you here as another planner and journal user who wants to focus on using their supplies! 😊💖
I get so much joy out of using up things I already have. It's very exciting to me. And Then I feel okay with buying a new sticker sheet or pen, after I've already finished one.
Very good topic to discuss especially the difference from the dopamine from buying versus doing the hobbies, spot on!! 😅Thanks for going there and discussing the elephant in the living room. Maybe the that is happening to many but not equally being discussed in the planner & journal community. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😅, Arlene
Thank you for your comment Arlene! I agree, I feel like it’s so normalized and not talked about a lot. I hope it can help people to think about it differently! 💖
Thanks for this video! I stumbled upon it at just the right time. I've been having that queasy feeling of uncontrolled spending and accumulating. I love what you said about gravitating towards the same kinds of things, and having similar items in your stash. I think that is so true. That really spoke to me, and I think I will be using that reminder when I am feeling tempted to buy new stuff 😊
Went a little crazy for Black Friday shopping so I’m thinking of doing a no buy (but for art journal/craft supplies). Love the idea of starting with 3-4 months! Great video! One thing I would tell beginners to planning/journaling is you don’t need all the things! There will always be a sale and there will always be a next best thing! I have a huge inventory of supplies I may never use (as I jumped way way way in) because my style has changed. Excellent video! I also totally agree, step away from social media and unsubscribe to emails - for me when I don’t see all the things I don’t want all the things
That’s great advice!! I did the same, and as my collection grew my style changed just like you said - makes it difficult to enjoy using all those things from the early days. You could even start with doing a no buy month and extend it if you’d like, it’s a great exercise and helps me connect to why I started the hobby in the first place 😊 what did you pick up for Black Friday? I hope you enjoy using your new (and old!) supplies 💖
I also started a no buy for online shopping this year and after doing them for a few months out of the year previously. I look at my carts now I don’t feel the need to purchase. There was some really great sales too especially during the Ultimate Planner Sale and the PBC sale but I felt good with what I have. I already used up 2 washi rolls and a many sticker sheets. It helps for me to have a plan to what theme I want to use for the month. I anticipate a good chunk of my stationery stash will be used up this year!
I am literally where you are right now. I only started a couple months ago and feel like it has become an addiction to find all the supplies in videos.
Thank you for the shoutout friend 💕 I really loved this video and how comprehensive you were about your rules and reasoning for your low buy. Also really liked hearing about your strategy when coming out of your no buy. I’d love to see more videos like this in this casual chatty format!
Hello there, new subscriber here :) I am so glad that I have come across your video. I tried to start out the year with a low spend and have not been too successful, so have just started my no buy. Like you have mentioned, I am so grateful for the things that I do have and want to give them some time to shine so to speak. I feel like there is so much FOMO in the journaling, papercrafting and pen community that it easy to get caught up in it all. I have set myself some rules and you mentioned a few more that I had not thought about, so thank you :) I also find that I work better when I have a goal and can stay focused. Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful week :)
Hello and welcome!! 🤗 I give you a lot of credit for realizing it’s not working for you and adjusting accordingly. It’s such a difficult change but you’re doing great! It’s true that there is a lot of FOMO and lots of companies who make you want to buy their stuff. I hope this video helped and you have more success! Thank you for being here 😊
I've started up a no-buy-for-a-while policy starting this week. I hit a sale at Penchalet and bought a FWP carousel pen and then less than a week later, I hit Goldspot Pens' Last Chance Sale and bought a really pretty Benu. I figure I'll make it a late-spring-into-summer policy, and go back to my fiendishly inky/pennish ways at the return of autumn.
Thanks for sharing ❤ love how intentional you have been with your low spend… ultimately I think it has to be a lifestyle shift because I have done low spends but then it backfires afterwards 😅
So this is going to sound weird but I hit this spot where I am finding that I don't really WANT to buy anything. Like, nothing is interesting me. I will peruse Amazon or walk Target or something, ready to buy. And there's nothing tempting me. My usual suspects don't pull me anymore and I'm open to something new but I'm just not feeling it. So here's the weird part: I'm uncomfortable with the fact that I don't want anything. Very uncomfortable. I'm super glad to use what I have but that does not soften the discomfort of not wanting anything new. Any suggestions on what might be going on there? Anyone else experience that? I've been looking to see if anyone talked about this but maybe I'm just a freak. 😂 I will say, my "allowance" account is loving my disinterest in acquiring new stuff. I've tried telling myself that maybe the universe knows that something awesome that I will want is coming and that SORT OF helps with my uneasiness. 🤷🏿
I think that sounds awesome! I recently experience this too and for me it is the best feeling, because I have had shopaholic tendencies before. The Main problem is that we live in a consumerism society. If you don't want to buy so much maybe you feel like you are not part of the society?
As another commenter said, I wonder if it’s because you feel like you have to keep buying to stay relevant or to feel like you’re a part of the hobby? I’ve gone through similar situations where NOTHING appeals to me so I totally understand what you mean! I think it’s so insightful and important you’re noticing how this makes you feel, I hope you can find peace with using your stationery and not feel so uncomfortable not buying!! 💖
@@katharinawichmann8284 I don't think it's that I don't feel a part of society, per se. I think most of society kind of sucks. I can say that it's not helpful that my bestie is a full fledged consumer and this turn I've taken has sort of diverged our paths. It was one of our bonding points, you could say...confessing what we scored at a craft store or whatever. I feel like she doesn't really support this new phase I'm going thru. I do recognize that I'm letting the joy be stolen by my comparing myself to her. I know that there are better things to do with the money I'm saving by being disinterested in the immediate gratification of retail therapy. I can keep saving. I can invest. Just in a weird space with it all, I reckon. It's renting more headspace than it should.
Subscription boxes are the worst for accumulating a lot of things you're never going to use. Half of the things I would get in sub box were things I would never have actually bought just to get one or two things I wanted/would use.
