A lot of the stuff you did to try and give context for/justify the lpvo-as-only optic is going to need a revisit already with the scopeswitch, and if the electric scopeswitch version in (?) 2 years is any good, that will ice it, no need then to flap gums about piggybacks and offsets.
Myself I'm hopeful for the electric version being the real deal. Not many people actually got their hands on a flux brace for the Glock. It's the most precision machined and sure footed plastic accessory I've ever used, love mine. That's the team doing the scope switch so I hear.

This or a similar aimpoint setup is litteraly the best option for fighting out to 300 yards. I used to strictly run aimpoint with 3x magnifier until the steiner p4xi came into my life. By FAR the best 1x I've ever seen on an LPVO while still having a beautiful and forgiving 4x high end that blows ANY magnifier out of the water.
It's not nearly as bomb proof as an aimpoint or eotech but that's literally the only downside other than 2 - 8oz additional weight depending on cantilever mount.

  • @frozennorth3426
    @frozennorth3426 Рік тому +20

I know you said you’re new to that NF, so I can clarify a few things about it…
    -
    turrets not weatherproof
The turrets are very weatherproof. Whoever told you capped turrets = leaky was pulling your leg. Certainly true for lesser scopes made over the decades, but a lot of things are.
Extreme survivability and relentlessly persistent zero is what you’re paying for with NF (I know those weren’t part of the video’s more flat range criteria, just pointing out their product priorities). That’s the benefit traded for less FOV. Hell, they machine their scope bodies from billet aluminum to be 2-3x as thick as comparable scopes (and you’re right: the thickness is visible and cuts into FOV)
Take the caps off and throw them away if you want (or keep ‘em at home or in the bag). The turrets are plenty durable and weatherproof. The fact that they’re nice doesn’t mean they’re fragile.
    - Tie 100’ of cord to the scope and throw it overboard into the ocean for a few hours. Drag it around with the boat.
    - Spray it off with a hose afterward
-Throw it onto the roof and leave it there for a year through ice and thunderstorm and blazing sun
The thing doesn’t care, caps or not.
They’re pressure-tested to equivalent 275’ (but spec-ed for 100 I think) and for rapid change from -40°F to 160°F and back.
NF is not going to make you a military scope (at least in the atacr or nx8 lines) that has the screwing and unscrewing of caps as part of the dialing process. That is absurd. I’m surprised you assumed that, let alone told people that. No selection process would tolerate that, and no commercial user should either.
(I’d hope this is all true for the vortex also but, wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t. Their approach to durability is to have a warranty that’s famously good because so many people have had to use it. Still, it’s famously good. You don’t even need a receipt or proof of purchase. You could find a vortex in a dumpster and they’ll warranty it for ya. I respect that)
    -
    turrets not tactile
I couldn’t say what’s wrong with yours but they’re plenty tactile. If you can’t feel the clicks easily, maybe contact NF and see what’s up.
In fact that’s all I use to track clicks on any scope: feel (except when reading the numbers to record zero settings). I don’t depend on sound or sight for dialing because I don’t want habits that assume quiet and/or bright conditions (even if the scope’s printed numbers and audible clicks are fine too)
    -
illuminated horseshoe occludes view on 8x
    Then turn it off.
Just give the left dial one click in either direction. It’ll become part of the main etched reticle and won’t be a bother. This will be important in low light anyway.
If you just want it dimmer but still like it lit up a bit, just dim it (same knob)
    summary
I’m not here to stan for NF or the ATACR 1-8, and I bet a lot of folks bought them on the commercial market based on the SOCOM selection (assuming highspeed guys have universally “best” stuff), not realizing that unmatched & unrelenting Durability/Reliability was a big criterion in that selection process, when it’s not as much a concern for the average flat range shooter which will be 99% of commercial buyers. That’s why it’s good that there are videos like this to focus more on their/our priorities.
The thing will also not be ideal for run-and-gun competitors or anyone needing to switch back and forth rapidly between 1x and 8x nonstop all day (as the throw is very slow, designed to require some deliberate effort). That’s something that’s come up in more testing-focused comparison videos.
So there are certainly reasons to prefer other scopes in the class
    - lighter
    - cheaper
    - faster magnification throw for run-and-gun competition
    - two focal plane lpvo
    - prefer extremely simple reticle for precision work for some reason
    - prefer moa to mrad
    - prioritize invisible housing at 1x above all other factors
…but those three in the video addressed back up at the top aren’t problems with this specific model, unless it’s somehow broken.
Thanks for the video, and I hope this helps! :)

Great video! Ultimately, every LPVO represents a trade-off of sorts. It really just depends on what your use cases are. The S&B is an unbelievable scope but at the $5500 price tag it simply is not a realistic option for 99% of people out there. Thanks for the video. My hope is that in the future, the dual sfp and ffp technology used in that scope will be adopted by other manufacturers at a more advantageous price point.

    @airwolf... Рік тому +14

Very very good review! Thank you for breaking all of this down. I am glad I am not the only person that was completely underwhelmed by the Nightforce ATACR 1-8. My friend encouraged me to buy one of those instead of the Razor HD 1-10, saying it was so much better. After looking through his, as well as his Kahles 1-8, I decided to go with the Razor. As an LPVO and being purchased by somebody that does not have unlimited money, I think the Razor HD is a better choice overall. I value the size of, or lack there of, the diopter ring in my vision quite a bit and it is hard to beat the Razor HD. The Razor gives such good situational awareness because it is not obstructing a large portion of your view in front of you. I also like the fact that the Razor has a no questions asked lifetime, transferable warranty. You trash it, call Vortex, they email you a shipping label, and in a few weeks your scope is back and in pristine condition. Not a single dollar spent. Something you mentioned in your video is that the removable scope caps can be lost and will cost a fortune to replace. Vortex will send you new scope caps for free along with a nice Vortex hat to go with it. Their VIP warranty is truly that and it is a huge driving factor in my purchasing decisions.
I know that you were going for the creme de la creme of scopes and it is now old hat, but it would have been interesting to see how the Razor HD Gen II-E 1-6 stacked up against these. Being a second focal plane optic and using fiber illumination, I think it may have fared a lot better in the optics and illumination categories. Second focal plane, from what I understand, is much easier to design around and you have to sacrifice/compromise a lot to make an LPVO with a first focal plane reticle. The Gen II-E has such an amazing flat, true 1x and the crosshair is so easy to pick up at any magnification, since it is second focal plane. I think it is a great optic for a 5.56 SBR-length rifle because it gets you out to 500 yards or so with zero issues, has a very fast and simple BDC reticle in the JM-1, and is much more well suited to CQB-distance use. I think the Razor HD 1-10 was kind of Vortex doing the best they could within their price envelope and compromising on the design limitations of a FFP LPVO and bringing something enticing to the market. There are a lot of people who see 1-10 on the box and go for that without understanding that a 1-6 or 1-8 may be much more well suited to their use case and they have to take that crowd into consideration, sadly.
After watching your LMT 14.5" 6.5 Creedmoor video (which was awesome btw), I ended up building my own and I love it. It is such a versatile rifle. I decided to put a Razor HD 1-10 on it and the deficiencies of the scope really stand out on that particular rifle when shooting at longer ranges. Like you mentioned in your video, it gets really dark at 10x and with the fixed parallax at 150 yards, it really struggles to make targets visible past 500 yards or so. Trying to make out black painted steel plates at 500-800 yards is a struggle for me. The optic just does not have enough definition/resolution at that range to see and engage small, hard to see objects. I also have a hell of a time seeing the reticle at 1x without having the illumination turned on and just using it as a red dot. This isn't a huge deal, but it definitely burns through batteries compared to a dedicated red dot with the piddly little CR2032 battery. I think I am going to sell it and grab either a March Shorty 1-10 since it has the adjustable parallax or move up to something like a Nightforce NX8 2.5-20x50 F1. I feel like having 2.5x at the low end will compromise the versatility of the rifle but in all honesty, I spend more time shooting at distance from a bench with it than playing around up close. So it is probably a better choice.
Either way, that was a great review. You have an amazing channel and I hope it continues to grow.

One thing that's turned me off on some right away is the throw ring and ease of use. Some folks want a nub, others a long shark fin and then there's the "inch and a half spike" crowd.
Granted, you don't always get to choose what you get and you have to train to your gear as opposed to the free world where you purchase the gear that best suits you.
I've gone back and looked at my LPVO to see how it stacks up in the pros/cons with respect to the categories in this battle of the single lenses. It's pretty eye-opening and now I notice things mentioned more, but it didn't make me want to throw it on eBay and go get another. I've trained to it, even if subconsciously.

As a 3 gunner, I would never want exposed turrets, I would only want an LVPO with a reticle that goes out to as far as you’d want on a 5.56/.308 which is past 500, more like 700-800, I’ve shot matches to 600 and have seen some that go just past 700 and I imagine Military/LEO wants the same thing, know your dope and hold, having turrets that could knock out of adjustment is not good, anyone doing true long range would want to dial but would also use a bigger scope, the type that uses an LVPO wants to hold. Also, if you lose your caps, Vortex will send you new ones for free, but there’s no time to dial on the clock anyway. Also, with the dot, I don’t ever turn my dots up all the way for long range, or mid range. I turned it off on my Viper 1-6, with the Razor, I turn it down until the reticle is translucent (kind of a cool feature of the reticle not mentioned) but can still be seen, that way small targets at say 200 are visible through the reticle, the rest, won’t matter what the reticle looks like because of holds. During a stage, I select what mag/brightness I want, if it’s more than 1, I set it there and use an offset for close targets.

Been on the watch for a S&B Dual CC for a couple of years with MDR-T6 reticle. They don't come up very often and when they do they sell out fast. Well, the time has come and I have one coming from EuroOptic. Those folks always treat me right. The closest thing to this is the March 1-10 Gen2 for $3K and I was about to place an order for one, but EuroOptic let me know they just got in some S&B's. I have several other German scopes and there is a very real difference in image quality and build quality.

Nice video my friend it took me a great while to find an LVPO that would replace my Red Dot sight on my rifle the one lvpo that you should try is the Leopold patrol 6 HD I have night Force and vortex I have I have a lot of high-end scopes trijicon also the best one and I mean absolute best one that replace that can replace a red dot.for CQB or any other type of work close or far is that Leopold patrol also the trijicon second focal plane 1-6 credo or the HX I have the one with the red segmented circle you can also go with just the dot. Either one of those are wonderful but just like you said if you have a scope that doesn't work on one magnification and then it just doesn't work but both of those that I just mentioned are absolutely outstanding but the Leopold is just blows everything else out of the water I wish you can find one and do a review on it take your time and adjuste it to your eyes I'm telling you that thing is absolutely outstanding it shuts off by itself after 5 minutes all you do is pick up the rifle and it's right there back on again it's just like a red. With a built-in magnification in it it's wonderful if you could I suggest you try it

This lpvo battle royale really screams HTS and DFC. The price tags on those are crazy. Quite frankly, at 5k+, the schmidt and bender better do everything and feed my dog too. I’ll probably only be able to use that optic in tarkov since 5k is just too steep for glass, even on a transferable IMO. And I’m saying this with a transferable while hoping to have 2 soon. 5 large for glass is just crazy.
That’s especially so when K18 and March exist. Though at those prices, you’d probably expect it to have marked turrets and the best FFP- so not be SFP like the kahles. March has such a great footprint but I just hate their mount. Kinda makes you think that if that’s the worst thing about them, they’re pretty good glass. That and their horrible logo that they should change are probably the worst things about them.
Both are still likely the best options though, Sans the obvious S&B. Better yet, the “mid tier”-though more like upper mid tier LPVOs are available and perform so well with the razor gen 2e, vudu, and other similar Japanese glass higher end optics to even lesser known models from solid brands like Swarovski, SIG (not referring ng to the 6t though lol) higher end PA, etc.
Funnily enough, most of these LPVOs were in the mid tier snobs showdown. But who knows, maybe in the end I’ll eat my words and find a PM II over at GAFS for cheap. S&B is amazing tech and work, just wish I can shell out for it without worrying about anything else. Maybe if it had everything, the thinness of the Razor, footprint of the March while being 17oz, it’d be absolutely perfect. Maybe in the future where they’d make one just like that
But all in all, Leupold can’t make a 1x because they’re either too stubborn to diminish magnified quality to get a true 1x or just keep rebranding MPVOs as LPVOs with their 1.1 and 1.5x LPVOs. While Nightforce is overpriced and riding on their military pedigree without innovating on where it matters. Solid vid in finally giving us a high tier showdown!

I would go with the March of any of these. Dual reticle and AO in a 1 - 10 LPVO with great Japanese glass is hard to beat. It's nearly 3k but you get what you pay for. If you have nearly 6k to spend on a scope, sure go with the Schmidt Bender. I have a PA PLx-C 1 - 8 and it's pretty good for $1500, but only usable up to 6x(AO would fix that) and has a great reticle. But you know what is the best bang for buck? The Vector Continental 1 - 6 x 24. What a great scope! Glass is bright and clear on all powers, doesn't need AO, very low distortion, good reticle, good turrets, and is on sale for $300!

These types of LPVOs are overkill for 5.56 anemic performance at distance. Where they really make sense is for PID and if you share reticles across a unit, and on top of more capable cartridges. 6.5 Grendel and 6mm ARC come to mind, especially with the low recoil being able to spot your own hits and quickly make shots at distance on the fly. That’s where the elevation stadia with 10 mils also come into play. 5.56 runs out of gas really fast after 200yds, and is pretty much done after 300-400, not much energy left. The compact 1-4s and 1-6s plus the March shorties are about as big as I would want to go with 5.56 for that reason. For folks shooting DMR matches, then you want as much glass as you can bring, so there these start to make sense even if you’re under-gunned with 5.56x45. When you put a good LPVO on a 6.5 Grendel, the combination really works well together, especially 12” suppressed.

You should go shoot a match sometime.. guys making solid hits at 1000 yards with 556 on the regular..

@@110sassactual I’ve been shooting matches and long range since no later than 1995 in 3 different Scout Sniper/Recon Platoons in the Army, including going though SOTIC MTT and regular sniper sustainment training in each of those Platoons. I’ve been competing, running DM/ LR courses, or supporting matches ever since.
I have competed regularly in international military 2-man team Sniper matches (and placed). I’ve owned and seen all types of 5.56 rifles, carbines, and ammo combinations come through courses over the years, so that’s where I’m coming from. You might scratch the paint off at 700yds, but they aren’t what I would call solid hits at 1000yds even with 77s. You can get audible hits if there is no wind, but I live in the Mountain West so we almost always have a lot of wind.
If you single load 90gr SMKs or Bergers, it does a lot better but kind of defeats the purpose of a self-loader.
You’ll see what I’m talking about if you get on a Grendel, doesn’t really matter what barrel length. The impact on steel is really close to what you hear with .308, only you don’t lose sight picture and just watch and hear your own impacts very audibly. 500yds is boring with it.
If you shoot a 24” bolt gun .223 loaded with 77s right next to a 12” Grendel, you will hear “tink-DING” on the same plate within a second of each other, very illustrative of the difference in momentum. Even with 6mm, in all the matches I’ve RO’d, it’s very difficult to register hits in the wind once you get to 700yds with full value 7-10mph wind. 120-130gr is the sweet spot for impact and low recoil, and nice cutting through the wind with BC.

@@t3h8ar0n They're about ideal on smaller frame .308s/6.5s, as long as the internals hold up.
I know NightForce and Vortex Razors hold up well.
I've broken at least three 1-4x24 LPVOs so far on 5.56 and Grendels, but they were all those older discontinued GRSCs with that great reticle, clear glass, and large FOV.
I'm looking at the March 1-10x24 Shorty Gen II, which is tiny.

Why put a Red Dot on an LPVO, specifically the S&B Dual CC? I have a Dual CC on a SIG MCX 10” and don’t have a Red Dot, but use the S&B Red Dot at 1X power. Enjoyed the video!

      Great question!
It’s strictly used as a passive aiming optic for night vision. Can be used as a BUIS as well.
But it’s never used as a primary optic unless using night vision
