I once saw a saying that they equate Alpha's to computer terms. "When men refer to themselves as "alpha males", I hear that in the context of software, where alpha versions are unstable, missing important features, filled with flaws, and not fit for the public."

Ruby Franke shouldn't see the light of day for a long long time. There's no way that she suddenly realized what she was doing was terrible after months and months of thinking like this. She 100% still thinks this way and is just trying to save her own skin. She's a fanatic and fanatics don't change that quickly. She's just realized she needs to another mask on to try and get some sympathy.

Datacenter architect here (mechanical engineer that used to design the buildings and now designs the crap that goes in them). Everything you covered is spot on imo. The national grid is hugely outdated, WAY too fragile and needs a lot more capacity. There is a measurement in the industry known as PUE (power utilization effectiveness). The short version is that it is All Facility Power divided by IT Workload Power. Most facilities operate with a PUE in the ballpark of 1.5. This means that roughly 1/3 of the power used in a datacenter is just to cool the equipment. The buildings are typically designed with a target PUE usually of 1.2 to 1.3, but those target PUEs are only realized if the building is at capacity, and they usually take years to get to that point.
I bring all of this up because typically we only hear about the power draw in and of itself. But we could be MUCH smarter about the way that we cool datacenters and we would save huge amounts of power. Most datacenters are cooled with systems not too different from those used in standard houses. Meaning we basically just blow cold air at the hot computer. Having air at around 70 F go in the front of the equipment and come out the back (~4 feet later) at over 100 F is not unusual. It is also not very thermally efficient. There are better ways to do it, but they involve big capital expenditures, so most datacenters will not do it until they are forced to. The AI boom and its resultant processing power demand may actually help us on this front. The CPUs and GPUs allowing the AI advances to happen are more power hungry, which is a large part of the problem, but they are also more dense and harder to cool. This means that while they draw a lot more power, they also cannot operate at as high of a temperature as previous models. Which sounds like a problem, but it actually leads to a potential good thing. Air moving over these things is not enough too cool them anymore. So, we are being forced to use much more efficient methods. One example is Direct Liquid Cooling - bringing liquid coolant directly to a copper plate covering the processors and other hot bits. DLC is a substantially more efficient way to cool IT equipment. It is also more expensive up front, which is why to date it has been used mostly in super computers, but now our hands are starting to be forced. Also, despite the name, DLC also uses MUCH less water than the traditional approaches to cooling IT gear.
Sorry for the novel. My nerd self doesn't get to be relevant too often...

I am a single woman living in Northern Maine and a recent new homeowner. I work as an Ed Tech in a school while also earning a Masters degree entirely online whim working full time. The ACP program has cut my internet bill in half and I’m so grateful for it. The money I saved from internet bills has gone directly to my mortgage or masters degree tuition. To lose the ACP is a big hit for me, and I live incredibly frugal and am lucky enough to live in an area that doesn’t have a crazy high cost-of-living. I can’t even imagine how this will affect full size families or other low income households who are already struggling. Last summer the air conditioner in our bedroom went bad and that same month I suffered a seizure and it took them nearly TWO MONTHS to put in a new AC for us and for those two months we had our mattress out on the living room floor (the only other room in our apartment with AC) and I had to recover from having a seizure on the living room floor! The types of tenants here now are trash! They literally leave trash laying around the complex and don't follow the rules. Also, when ordering things online you gotta look out for the mail man because we've had packages stolen and so have other people! Also, last summer they were late opening our pool and it was only open for barely a month because some dbag let their kid go in the pool with a diaper on and the diaper got clogged into the filter and the whole pool turned black so they closed it early so we couldn't even enjoy the pool for the whole summer and the 3 summers before that they had the pool closed so I don't understand exactly why they keep raising our rent every year when they run this place like crap! If we could afford it, we would move but we can't afford to move and we both don't drive and the location is perfect because everything we use on a daily is within walking distance, the bus stop is right outside our door and my parents live 4 miles up the road so if we need help with anything or taken to doctor's appointments they can be here within 10 minutes.

Hey Phil, I'm actually the Operations Manager for an Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) provider. The FCC has told us that, as it stands, if Congress does not appropriate additional funding towards the program, the funding will not last for the full month of May, and then customer bills could increase anywhere from $40-100 a month. This, for the same service that they were, in many cases, receiving completely free while enrolled in the ACP. Most people who are eligible for the ACP just flat out cannot afford that much of an increase to their monthly bills and general costs of living.

You get generations use their smart phones with a video phone app, but they also have a physical screen and calling mechanism in their home. I have clients who are 60+, reliant on their VP for connection to other deaf people, who can barely affording an internet bill on their $800/m disability. The ACP is really a god send for elderly Deaf people who are low income, isolated, and reliant on their videophone for communication. They are never thought of in these decisions, and it breaks my heart.

The govenor said that thanks to the ship calling "mayday", they were able to stop traffic just in time (literally, within seconds before the collision) but unfortunately a construction crew filling pot holes wasn't able to get to safety. I'm a part of the group that is potentially getting kicked off of the ACP. $30 off your internet or phone bill every month is huge when you're barely making it financially already. That's $360 a year which could go to saving up for a new microwave or no longer dealing with a minifridge. Maybe you want to save up to be able to wash your clothes at home instead of going to a relative's, neighbor's or laundry mat.
I'm already dreading this summer, because I know that my electric bill is going to be double the amount even if I use it sparingly. It'll be 82° inside and I'm upstairs, so I just have to put up with it, and this is when my bill is only roughly $100. Compound this with a higher internet bill this summer, and I'm really worried about what I'm going to be forced to do unless this gets funding again. We were alerted 2 months ago that funding was running out, and that we may be dropped and it's only now that people are speaking up about it.
The internet and phones are fundamental to our lives now, and it should be treated as a utility like electricity and water. Many jobs are online or require you to apply online, many government assistance programs require you submit documents online, applying for disability or even paying bills is online. I was going to be paying extra on my phone bill just to get a paper bill, so now I'm paperless and can only check it by phone or online otherwise I'm forced to pay an extra $7 fee. It's stupid. This is honestly a small ask from the government to get a reduced bill, and it's going to help so many people get on their feet, or at least stay on them. Poverty doesn't discriminate between which party you support, and this should be a no brainer to fund.

When you're poor/working class, so much seems futile, or at least like a trade off. If you want this, you gotta sacrifice that, etc. Fewer opportunities look to be available to simply get ahead anymore.

The cost of energy and water is getting out of control. Here in Oregon, Portland General Electric just increased the rates for power back in January 2024. 18% for residential, 14.4% for commercial, and 11.6% for industrial customers. They are already trying to get another rate increase of 7.4% more for 2025!
Last year (2023) our water and sewer rates went up 8% and they want to do another 8% increase this July.
The frequency of the rate increases and the percentages is getting out of control and unmanageable by many residents. I don't see how they expect people to stay in the area when they make living here difficult financially.

Mind you, not even including my intermittent work from home income, my husband made "too much money" to be qualified for EBT normally and covid relief was all that saved us. If we hadn't had it, I would have had to skip out on most of my groceries, which usually are discounted and store brand to save as much money as possible already.

I work for a fuel supply company, during the winter storm in Texas a few years ago we had many calls to fill backup generators with diesel. We ended up servicing a data center next door to facebooks in DFW. (More on that later) to keep these backup generators online it took close to 30,000 gallons of diesel over the course of several days. Great for business, but I couldn’t help but notice how much power it takes to run these facilities. For context that is enough fuel for a single 18 wheeler to drive around the equator about 10 times. During the freeze I had employees at home who had no electricity and were freezing with their families. Guess which data center never had their power cut off. Facebook. It was tough to see, but at least people were still able to post on their wall about how cold it was in their homes.

Now the owners live in rich communities many states away and brag about the charities they blow money into for their sweet tax breaks. It’s so cynical.

I have asthma and struggle with extreme cold and extreme heat but we can't afford those high electric bills, even with using our light sparingly it be coming out to a few hundreds, that's not counting water and other utilities bills, expensive rent and the inflation with food all while making less than $14 an hour and getting hours reduced at work.
Second thing I want to talk about...not cool about the Elon Musk thing, I am not a fan of him but as a fellow autistic I felt that Don Lemons was extremely disrespectful and wanted to just argue instead of conducting an interview, same with the other interview you used of Elon Musk. Both were disrespectful, aggressive and did not listen instead trying to push their own agenda. Again, I personally think Elon Musk as a human is a piece of sh!t but everyone deserves respect and to have their boundaries respected, also knowing that a lot of autistic people struggle with social cues and tend to be more logic base, its easier for us to have questions based on data not emotions.

My ACP was turned off in Feb. I tried to reapply and was told it is closed to new and renewing users. If you just never got the letter like me, oh well. I'm on the verge of being homeless at the 1st because similar thing happened in 2016 with SSI and I'm only this year getting help from a lawyer, which wouldn't help me till I had 5 years of constant work. These programs are corrupt with the way they handle things with people livelihood... I donate plasma twice a week every week just to survive. $35 in most of the money I make from one trip. So the last few months I have to let my phone go off for up to a week or just don't eat till later that week.

My mom was part of the ACP. It helped pay for her phone bill. She's on a fixed income & it helped pay for her $30 a month phone.
She got a letter one day a few months back saying the funding had run out & the people on the program were in it UNTIL the rest of the money ran out & that new applications would no longer qualify. She was on it for about a year & once she moved for retirement they gave her the runaround about her being on it or not.
When she was in Jersey they said once she was on it, she was on it. But when she moved to Florida they kept saying she had to "renew" every month. Then that letter came in...

Internet connection has become such an essential to everyday life that here in the UK we provide subsidised subscriptions to low income households. People can get vouchers from grant schemes for monthly PAYG internet on their phones. After a push for paper based applications for things like pensions and benefits a decade ago to not indirectly discriminate against older people, now there's a push to move absolutely everything online to save costs on printing and postage. Lack of internet access is now comparable to illiteracy in terms of holding people back in life. You can't apply for benefits, a job, housing, anything without it.

Almost every major electrical contractor, especially those that partner with the IBEW, in this area have the majority of their workforce building data centers in Ashburn Virginia, because of the proximity to the Atlantic international Internet hub in Portsmouth, VA. The local utility has had to cancel or delay approval for some projects because the grid can't support them and they need time to bolster transmission lines and build substations.

Don’t forget that a massive amount of power grids are reliant on aging Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that are scarily vulnerable.
Speaking from experience here. The windows 98 computer that was running my small town’s SCADA system caused havoc because its old telephone nic died.
It literally couldn’t communicate with or control the various systems because it didn’t have internet access which caused a massive panic not only for our public utilities once it was discovered but for the person who had to search for a purchasable replacement nic card for the computer asap. It’s just more costs that are going to deter decision makers from resolving the strain on resources

The relays and SCADA operations are highly controlled and isolated from general network connectivity. Never will they be truly secure.
My greater concern is how "easy" people think DER is. DER means distributed energy resources like solar and wind. I am entirely for DER but many people think it is easy to handle. It is not. It is complicated and extremely expensive. From a pedestrian view it's simple but from an engineering view is a nightmare compared to legacy systems of energy generation. Much love
