I live in Bucks County & it was nice to see you sitting on a hill by the canal in New Hope.... Great place to sit and write in your journal
Great video! My go to is a Galen Leather cover over whatever notebook I’m using. I have a green one with a strap to wrap around it and it feels really rustic and old.
Just took a look and now I'm obsessed. They are beautiful!
Such a lush video, a delight to watch. Enviable locales AND journals.
Thank you!
🎼 Lorena McKennitt, what!!!! One of my favorites and I seldom hear her music these days. Bravo! 🎶🎵
PaperBlanks are perfect as Dark Academia journals -- nice enough paper, beautiful historic covers that look "old" on bookshelves or desk, great sizes available , and more. But, I want an onion skin journal, so thanks for sharing one in this video. And the Bottega Obscura! Oh yes, I might be just insane enough to order one! Thanks for sharing those works of art with us. They are gorgeous.
Thank you for watching and for the suggestion. All the best!
Partial to Lamy Journals for the 8mm line and the thin booklets, A6 for your hip pocket.
Thanks Hemingway! It's true. For thoughtful moments, we can't just grab whatever paper is closest and jot down our words. Choosing the best media is part of the process and part of our finished work.
Well said! Thank you so much!
Oh! I need more Dark Academia videos. Once again, magnificent work. Thank you HJ.
More to come! Glad you like them.
I'm glad the Onion Skin Journal made your list. I love mine. I use it as a dream journal.
It's so good! Thank you!
Great and inspiring video as always. As a broke college student, I only aspire to have many notebooks for my research!! Thank you for your videos, they make life a little easier.
Not sure if it fits 100% in the category, but I love the William Hannah leather notebooks. Amazing leather made in the UK, perfect paper for fountain pens and customizable colors. Spendy but also refillable with the rings/disc system. Less of an ancient feel, but definitely a luxury leather academic feel.
That sounds like a wonderful option.
Love the Tennyson quote, timeless.
Me too! Always moves me.
The Lochby and the Bottega Obscura journals have my eye!
Lovely video as always. I loved the Bottega Obscura. But admittedly it's well out of my price range for a single notebook. It was also nice to see several new to me makers of notebooks.
It's also lovely seeing all the libraries, museums and art galleries you have access to and show through out your videos and B rolls.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind words and I am glad you enjoyed this. Thank you.
Superb- as we always expect and receive from this channel! So many beautiful journals! I must admit, I have never grasped the "dark" of the term "dark academia", as to my mind that would imply some occultic or diabolical element; whereas simple academia would seem quite adequate. Anyway, your child is simply Adorable!!!! PLEASE keep her safe and perhaps even limit some exposure to protect her from the kind of creeps that sometimes populate the ethers. You are SO blessed! Finally, the closing out music of The Long Road Ahead was perfection!!!!
Thanks for watching!
As an academic, the first few are over my budget. I love the Lochby idea so I can carry traditional notebooks like Muji or Rhodia or Apica in a cover, but found it too tight. My favorite is a Kokuyo Systemic cover that allows a pad on one side or a few small journals. These small journals give me less pressure and allow small project based notebooks. Fun video. Cheers.
Great video. Saw the Odyssey ones in DC. Should have gotten one. Maybe soon. The Onion Skin looks amazing too.
I love my Bottega oscura. I use it to log my favorite poems. The paper really makes the ink on the page look ancient. It's an incredible book.
I am so glad you have one! Wish you all the best and thanks.
I love the Flame Tree notebooks because of their artistic cover. Got two from the Ashmolean at Oxford.
Very nice!
I just love your dark academia videos so much. Thanks for another one 🙂
Thank you!
Such a beautiful video & great notebook choices! The Odyessy notebooks are fantastic! I like the darker (black & forest green) Official Bullet journals too and The TR Galen Leather notebooks with leather covers!
Thanks so much, Chris! Those are great choices. All the best.
What a wonderful video! I love the choices you made and some are new to me. I also love the musical choices you made 🎶
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hello HJ. Love the dark academia videos that you create. Also, the effects that you have mastered are very eye catching. My life has me implementing 3 different journals. The Montblanc is my daily go-to journal, the Onion Skin for creativity and the Leuchtturm for my common place writings. The journals that you featured are strong representatives of this genre. Great job! Keep them coming my friend.
Thank you very much! I’m really glad that you enjoyed this video. Sounds like you have some great options there as well. Wish you all the best and speak soon.
A5 Roterfaden taschenbegliter in brown leather and merino felt with any three of my rotation of inserts. My constant companion for over a year now.
The closest thing I have is a Franklin-Christoph Zippered Padfolio, with a pad of their bamboo paper. Yours I find intimidatingly de luxe, except the Lochby, so I'll vote for that one.
Thanks very much, My Friend. Yours sounds very nice.
Hi HJ! This was a very well-produced video! A few notes about the Lochby field journal. I traveled with mine recently by air and it is a nice, convenient size. They have removed the velco from the back pocket, and I was able to put my boarding passes in there and that worked out very well! Did not write in it too much, as my trip was a sad occasion, but I like the field journal a lot! The carrying handle is convenient, and it will actually hold up to three (I think) of their filler notebooks, so you could have a blank one for sketching and either a dot grid or lined one for writing (lined is my go to). Recently they had a sale on a 4 notebook pack, and I actually received them before I got my cover!
Thanks for this great information!
Lovely b-roll in some of my favorite libraries and museums.
Thank you!
Wonderful journals! The ISG museum is my favourite!
Love it there. I met My Helen there.
Wonderful video! Thanks for highlighting - in a darkly academic way ;-) - a couple of new to me journals to consider.
Thank you so much for watching.
HJ really have to say what a great video this was,the content was fabulous, great seeing all those places.Thank you for the journey.
Thank you so much for watching.
As usual, exceptional work Thank you so much for making this video. I think the Bottega and onion skin appeal to me the most.
Thank you so much for watching!
I love the look of the Peter Pauper Press 'Bookbound' journals, their designs are reproductions of beautiful historic books. Not the best paper, but I managed to make it work with 2 of my pens that have (extra) fine nibs.
Sounds lovely! I’ll check them out.
While I have a Lochby (actually several, and I love them) the rest were all new to me. Thanks for the introduction to some intriguing options!
Thanks so much for watching.
In terms of the Lockby Field Journal and internal pen loops I find my Lockby Quattro pen case fits in the back sleeve (although it does distort the line of the journal cover ). Great video as ever.
HJ, wonderful video and journal choices. I am using the Onion Skin Journal and it's so unique! Though I may have to add a Bottega Obscura one to my library. My other favorite is the Midori MD in A5 size, used with a leather cover. All are great choices for a 📖 journal.
Thanks so much!
Excellent video! I think I'm going to pick up an Odyssey notebook.
Excellent choice!
Nice video! Thanks, HJ.
Thank you!
Love the onion skin journal!
No doubt, my choice would be la Bottega. 😊 If I could afford any of them. 😅 My affordable choices are Castelli, Bomo Art and Paperblanks. They all have good DA designs. And of course you can always decorate a simple Travelers Notebook or Paper Republic insert to fit a DA aesthetic.
Thanks so much for watching.
Beautiful. Well done!
PaperBlanks & Moleskine
Lovely locations. Thanks for identifying them: saves me asking and you answering! Loved the Odyssey. Very much enjoy Tomoe River paper. I’ll figure out if they will fit into my Galen Leather cover, which I love, also. Thanks! What took you to New Hope? Interesting creature!
I use Boca, Galen Leather cover and 8 pen carry, a 5year Hobo Red Leather cover, and a Baron Fig zip fabric cover. All just great for slipping in a notebook of choice for journal though I use Hobonichi, Galen Leather, and Stalogy or Mindori inserts with quality Tomoe River or comparable paper that stands up to medium and broad fountain pen nibs.
Hi Tim, look up William Hannah note books. You can Evan select the colour of your page lines.👍
Thanks for the tip!
This was a fun journal. Probably will pick up a couple of your examples…thanks for cracking open my wallet…LOL
Thanks for watching! Sorry about that! I hope you enjoy them.
Hi Hemingway,
I want to get the Onionskin journal although all of the journals you reviewed are beautiful,( I love leather embossed and bound) I really want to try the onion skin paper! Currently I’m using the Galen Everyday journals in my Galen portfolio!
Greta choice! Wish you all the best.
Well, HJ… I need to be practical. I’m going to look at the Odyssey Notebook. I have filled over 100 Leuchtturm A5 journals. Time for a change.
I hope you like them.
Wow, 100+ journals!
I love the astronauts classical physics., I'll have to get one. The Lochby is nice (I have one), but I find the hook fastener a pain, so I don't use it often. It does look great, though. YRMV. Thanks for the Astronauts and Odyssey links. I often ue the minimalistic designs of Jet Pens Tomoe River notebooks or Midori MD notebooks, sometimes in Galen Leather holders.
Would like to get an Odyssey notebook with Tomoe River paper but there are no dot or lined options in their current offerings. BOO! You should have given them a heads up before releasing this… I’ll keep trying.
For some reason "Dark Academia" and the theme song remind me of H.P. Lovecraft.😊
Well I was gonna say, "What notebook would be best for a Space Odyssey?" But that question got answered a few minutes later with the Atoms and Astronauts Notebook lol.
Hear, hear! Great stuff.
Your "Event Horizon cover in vegan leather". Having been haunted by the movie Event Horizon for about 25 years I must give you the warning from the movie: Libera Te Tutemet Ex Inferis. Beware using such stationary even if it works well and is reasonable in price. Just my 2 cents.
After you see the Bottega the others don't look so dark academia.
That is a very good point. Those journals are next level. Thanks for watching.
Bottega makes me want to make a leather bound book by myself. Maybe not so ornately embossed but definitely rustic and rugged. Or maybe a scroll?
What kind of typewriter is on your shelf?
