Peridot is one of my favorites too! I inherited my moms wedding ring when she passed and it's a 7ct marquee Peridot set in a gold setting my dad designed for her in the 80's. I get compliments on it at least 3x a week. I bawled my eyes out the day I put it on.
Thanks Rebecca. I remember Rob covering Peridot before and he had a beautiful cut stone with sprays of Ludwigite inclusions. Peridot being my birthstone I treated myself to one, the Lapidary cut the stone so that the fine inclusions spray out from the centre. Peridot, in my opinion is very underrated. Some people love it or hate it. Maybe understanding the stone would help. Thank you for sharing. Rog from Wales 🏴.
YAY PERIDOT. 💚 When my family went to Sri Lanka, my mother bought my sister and I each our birthstones, & it is something I will always cherish. Growing up as an august baby, I used to be envious of other birthstones, but I have found myself just really loving peridot more and more as I get older (and Yellow green in plants as well). I haven't done much research on it and had no idea it was found in the mantle, hell yeah 😎 thanks for sharing as always!
I did most of my academic work on olivine, so it's lovely to see such beautiful speciemens here. My favourite is intense gold olivine from oxidised magamtic rocks formed above subduction zones. Not gem quality, but very beautiful. Most of the gem quality olivine/peridote is actually not voclanic/magmatic though, it is metamorphic (the mantle is made largely of peridotite, a metamorphic rock). What I find most interesting about olivine/peridot is that it is BY FAR the most common gem-forming material on Earth. The upper mantle is around 65% olivine, and the upper mantle is volumetrically way, way greater than the crust, where the vast majority of gemstones form. The challenge is of course growing olivine that is gem quality and then getting it to the surface via volcanoes.
I love peridot so much!!’I recently purchased a ring and bracelet from JTV to match some necklaces I made with peridot beads. I took geology as one of my science credits in college and we talked about peridot/olivine when we were discussing different types of magma. Such a cool mineral!
Such a wonderful mineral! That huge piece of basalt with peridot filled pockets were so cool! I have a beautiful apple green rough little peridot from Norway that I handmade into a pendant and I love it! I also have a pallasite which I think might be my fave specimen just because it's so darn cool to think about where it originated from! Not as big as the gorgeous piece you had though!
You guys are so cool, and I love watching your videos! Y’all should also make a video about gypsum crystals, and like selenite, satin spar and any type of gypsum! They’re my favorite crystals and I’d love to learn more about them!
I grew up in Hawaii. There we referred to it as olivines. We rarely had any of any size(several carats) but there were(are) areas of the islands where there are almost pure olivine sands in the tidal zones. It can be a beautiful green swathe..
Peridot is also the state stone of Hawai'i. They have a green sand beach consisting of olivine. On a different beach, I actually collected very small pieces of olivine.
Getting me all excited about an extra-terrestrial star stone👍 I'm not going to be satisfied till I obtain one, or, at the least get the opportunity to look at one under a microscope.
My birthstone. I prefer the old pronounciation. I've never heard of nor seen Pallasidic Peridot before or Ludwidite Peridot. One of the most beautiful gemstones ever. If I was into Numerology, I would say wow I'm born in the 8th month on 16th day and Peridot is the 16th wedding anniversary gift so 8+8=16. Wow what a connection. Thanks again Rebecca for showing off my beautiful birthstone and introducing me to another form of it.
thank you for the pronunciation explanation! I definitely feared I’d been mispronouncing my birth stone for years, happy to hear both peri-dough and peri-dott are acceptable!!
Well its not acceptable. Its. Not anymore acceptable than drag queens reading stories to your kids at school. Its not spelled peridoe and the guy that discovered it was not french with the name perudoe with a silent t at the end. So lets NOT encourage mispronunciation of any words. Dot dot dot does not spell doe does it? Well then.

There are also found many peridots in parts of Norway near the west-coast. They are given freely to the public coming out of the largest mined olivine locality in the world.
Thought you would mention that on the island of Oahu, Hawaii...Diamond Head gets it's name from the mistaken belief that the olivine crystals found on the outside of the volcanic crater...were diamonds. Also if you look carefully at the sand at beaches on Oahu, you can find small olive colored crystals.
Peter piper picked a peck of parasitic peridot perfectectly.. my wife's birthday is today and such is her birthstone. We also saw olivine on Green Sand Beach in Hawaii. So beautiful!
My grandfather gave me a set of two oval cut manchurian peridots that he actually got from JTV! Not sure what year he got them but they came with a fancy green box and identification card which is in the display with them currently! Absolutely stunning green and definitely the largest peridot gems in my collection!
