With this video i realized it’s not that i don’t like shiny keycaps, turns out it’s just the uneven shine on some keys that’s been bothering me. 🙌 you’ve really got lots of patience! Great work!
This is why I haven't worried about shining keycaps. It looks gorgeous, looks like the old vintage keyboard that being used heavily but still looks great.
Man, I was just sitting here thinking watching your videos thinking wow it's been two years science he made a video please come back I really enjoyed your content!
I like this way more than I thought I would. I sort of like the look of only the top being polished. I might do it to my GMK Laser once it gets more shine.
This is great! I think if you divide up your time wisely, you won't lose a lot of time. If you are spending 1 hour watching shows every day, use that time to shine several keycaps. In on month, you should be able to shine at least one or two sets!
Great video! Haven’t seen a tutorial on this yet. This seems more tedious than lubing switches but looks amazing especially on SA. Probably gonna try this with one of my GMK sets soon
some of my keycaps are already shiny with constant use. looking at them from the side only the alphas are shiny. the rest are still matte-looking. i will take your advice and try making them shine when I have lots of time like the holidays. thanks for your video.
Not greasy at all. Just normal i guess? I cant quite describe it. No grease or any extra feeling, but doesn't feel rough like stock. It will catch finger prints though especially for oily fingers lol
That legit looks great! I'd probably only do this on a set that was already starting to develop shine, just to even it out. And I'd probably try doing it just on the top to save time but that might end up looking terrible lol
Great video man! Really interesting. Does this make the surface of the cap smooth or is it mostly the polish that makes it shiny? You think it's reversible with an ultrasonic cleaner?
Nope, it's shiny. The friction causes the edges to shine. If you use a rotary tool with max speed, it will melt the keycap. I showed a sample for both in the video.
Regular shine from usage comes from wearing down the plastic from the friction of your fingers. I wonder how much of the shine here is from friction and how much is from the plastx product? In any case the results look nice! Thanks for putting in the work and sharing your results! Mabuhay from California
I got shine on a few of my gmk wob. Will this method apply to make my set more uniform in terms of shine? Legit question since my wasd is noticeably shiny af
Yes, for gmk, it does take a while though due to the texture, but entirely possible. I tried it on one shined gmk keycap but it does take a long time by hand. When using a tool be very careful because a hard enough cotton head and fast speed can melt the keycap due to friction. Make sure you apply a lot of polish to reduce it.
Ohhh okay better buy a rotary tool and offer all the time i have to shine these bad boisz! thanks your video was very informative and it might redeem the look of my gmk wob 🤣🤣
Does direction of polishing affect the shine at all? Not so much the quality of the shine, but if it causes any directional distortion. There is no way in hell I am not doing this, only reason I just picked up a set of ABS caps.
wait so what makes somone wanan do this? i thought most ppl dont like or want shine i mean with SA profile even my sig plastics 2600 set they shines eventually and i likes them alot thatway also, but would somone do this to like a gmk set? and i just wish their was a way to prevent it, its so sad to one\day know my bran new set even tho i have ten, will eventually meat its shine demise
I personally wouldn't do this on a set that wasn't already heavily shined. This will remove some UV protection, and you could introduce more rapid yellowing on the lighter colored caps. If the keycaps are already jacked, then evening out the shine makes sense.
Yeah, it's a lot of effort but really depends if you want to put that effort into the keyset. I liked the shine on it so I proceeded to do everything. And yeah, nothing in the keeb hobby is effortless :)
@@ducttaperulestheworl lol this takes like 10x longer than lubing switches. If you had to pay for this as a service, shining your keycaps would cost you $150+. Lubing your switches on the other hand would cost you $30-$40.
@@Magniboards I hear you. Personally I don't know if I like the shine in general, but I understand why you would like it. By the way if you want to practice on SA keycaps that don't cost as much, I do have SA blanks at ohkeycaps. I would be hesitant to play with different methods on keycaps from an actual SA set, especially with the after market prices being what they are.
Yeah, it really depends on the user/owner. I tried it because it looked nice on a board, plus I think it's an alternative to used keycap sets. I'll try it next on used and battered GMK sets.
I can totally understand; I do think uneven shine looks oily as well, but an even shine like here? I really dig it! of course, as with everything, it's up to you and what you prefer, but this is a really good solution to keep using an older set :)
Have you had nay experience shining your keycaps? Let us know!
Wasd keys are shimmering with my finger oil 😂
@@spetznazse777en6 I think we all get to thah point lol good thing you can now spend mindless hours shining everything evenly lol
With this video i realized it’s not that i don’t like shiny keycaps, turns out it’s just the uneven shine on some keys that’s been bothering me.
🙌 you’ve really got lots of patience! Great work!
Exactly! Most of us don't like the uneven shine, but with enough patience we can just turn the used sets into somewhat brand-new-looking ones!
This is why I haven't worried about shining keycaps. It looks gorgeous, looks like the old vintage keyboard that being used heavily but still looks great.
Man, I was just sitting here thinking watching your videos thinking wow it's been two years science he made a video please come back I really enjoyed your content!
Shined keycaps look gourgeous, had this JTK set for about 3 years now and the shine gives my board alot of personality IMO
I have a Domikey set that my girlfriend shined a couple months ago, might actually try this, with my dremel of course.
That's awesome! Just becareful when using the dremel like I mentioned on the video! Have fun! It's a long journey lol
I’ve thought about doing this. Shine looks bad when it’s natural because it’s so uneven but these looks great, definitely a vintage look!
Dude, your content is great. You really deserve more subscribers.
I appreciate that! Thanks very much for your support!
damn that was a lot of effort but turned out really nice, maybe one day when my sets are mostly shiny i can try this, great content as always man!
Thank you! 🙏
The results are excellent. Well done!
Love the style of this video, you just earned a new sub
Always something I’ve been curious about. Thanks for covering it!
No worries! It's a tedious but fun experience!

Very interesting idea-looks cool
Keep up the great work man love the content! I may have to try this on one of my shined sets just because of how amazing it looks lol
thank you! definitely try it out!

Well "more tedious than lubing switches" is an understatement. But I think it's worth it!

The polish makes them look even more retro. Like some others have said, it's the uneven shine that looks bad.
How do they feel like after polishing? Does it feel greasy or just like it used to feel before polishing.

Very useful video, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! You're Welcome!
Would this also work on Keyboard Covers such as silicone covers? - most of the time alt/cmd + tab lol.(which can get greasy too with greasy fingers)

That's what I was thinking. If you were to shine them naturally from usage it would only be the tops
I'm kinda OC so I'll do the whole keycap! 😂
@@Magniboards haha fair enough!
Hello amazing video by the way. Do the keycaps feel greasy to type on? Thank you!!
They will
Polish on plastic makes them feel sticky
Because polishing will remove a layer of plastic on the key

Another awesome content! Btw, was wondering what series you were watching while doing this? haha
Thanks man! His Dark Materials and 1 Season of the Expanse!
How did you get the PlastX residue off of the keycaps? I did this with MT3 and the surface is very sticky.
I only did this with some of my keys. But it does take a really long time. It took me about 3 minutes per key, sometimes took me upto 5 mins.
What rotary tool did you use? My dremel melted the ABS on my MT3 WoB even on the lowest speed.
2 years later there's now JTK HSA Hyperfuse keycaps. I wonder if they the idea from this video??
Aftermarket be like, "Absolutely shiny"
lol one thing we can do on aftermarket keycaps, shine them!
Gonna grab the Dremel and try to polish! :D
Awesome and goodluck! Takes forever but the result is amazing!
sir can i ask about the brand or specs of your rotary tool ?
What is the tool you used to polish the caps?

It's definitely 95% from PlastX. The set of caps I got had a matte finish, no shine whatsoever.
I thought the shine came from the keycaps bonding to the oil on your finger tips.
This is super cool lol, are they still shiny up until now?

Nail polish or nail polish remover because that would make sense as it's similar to acetone
ACETONE melts plastics
Alcohol, any faster?
so cool
I think custom keyboard nowaday is just choosing from catalogue, You way is real custom
was just talking to a friend about it lol
