I'm pretty sure the reason why the black one didn't work was not because of the black, it was because that was an ABS keycap. This only really works on PBT plastics.

@@craigrmeyer ABS has a lower melting point and is more deformable as a plastic (hence why ABS keycaps wear and become shiny quite quickly with use). Dye-sublimation requires you to use quite a bit of heat, so usually by the time you're at a temperature to apply the dye to the plastic, the plastic is already melting. PBT is a lot more hardy and durable with a higher melting point. High quality ABS keycaps are usually doubleshot, using two different colours of ABS plastic to create a specific design. This is why custom sets usually cost a lot of money and are done as group-buys as they have to make new tooling for each individual key in each individual size.

Arg this is such a cool concept, but naturally EVERY printer compatible with the process is sold out here. I'm really keen to try it out on some 3D Printed parts.
I think 3D printed key caps have a lot of potential. If you use filament the color and material you want, you can print any profile (SA, Cherry, GMK) and then use this dye-sublimation to put on letters or designs. This seems like a great alternative to dropping $100-200 on quality keycaps.

I've been spending endless nights looking for keycaps that fit my vision for the keyboard I built, and already spent a bit of money, with frustrating results. Just cant seem to find the ones I need, and the one I did find ships in 2021. NOW i know I can just make what I want at home. no one else actually suggested it. This just saved me from spending so much energy and money.

Huh, you learn something new everyday--I've never heard of it being called "Sublimation Ink," we always called it heat transfer ink. And yes, when it comes to any kind of heat transfer, it effectively dyes the color into the surface, rather than being an external layer on top of the surface, as with painting or screen-printing. It's one of the reason heat transferring is so widely used for dishwear and pottery, because it's far more durable and easier to clean. (Note: T-shirts can have different results if you're attempting to use an 'opaque' transfer sheet, as it adheres an additional layer onto your cloth surface for the sake of the correct coloration.) You can also DIY something similar with transfer paper (or even tracing paper, if it's hand-drawn) and gel medium, but it takes about 24 hours to accomplish.
You learn a lot after working at a craft store for 8 years.
