I've been running ceramic keycaps for a while now. Since I use heavy springs for my tactile switches, I would say on feel and look they are my favorite. However, there are some sound differences as sometimes it will feel like a glassy strike depending on the defects of the key. The stem in metal keycaps its a bit better in that you can bend it to fit them more, I've had to use some string to properly fit two of my ceramic keys that kept popping out. ABS - I love my GMK keycaps because they feel grippy. As many already know they feel great but they shine super fast (especially if you type a lot, or if you code). The price and wait for them makes them hard to recommend. I also love super cheap ABS keycaps, these are a bit harder to find but man I have a set of transparent keycaps from China that are super grippy and sound great. I prefer them over any PBT keyset. PBT - These are... idk. They often feel like I have chalk on my fingerprints. At least the ones that I bought through groupbuys. However, there are some PBT keycaps (again the cheap ones) that feel pretty good and grippy while sounding great. Not as good sounding as ABS but decent. Typically I order a spacebar set if I like a colorway and then test the quality of the keycaps but overall PBTs for me have the largest variance and inconsistency so I recommend them the least. Metal are my favorite by far... Hopefully we get some more sets like: + Aluvia + Alumizu
As you can see our keyboards don't have spacebar, but they have 8 thumbkeys. Maybe what you wanted to say is to try the sound of a key with stabilizer, and you are right, we should have done that too 😊
I’m using the metal key caps from TeamWolf in a mix of black and silver. They’ve got a nice feel to them: cool at first but warm up quickly as I start typing. Looking forward to when they release the full 108-key set later this year. My only issues with what I have right now is that they’re alpha+only and the metal means I have to be very aware of keeping fingernails short. Being alpha-only I also bought a “gamer” set for arrows and to get the two-tone Q,W,E,R,A,S,D,F. Still, no numbers or symbols (comma, period, slash, semicolon), but because I bought the alpha and gamer sets, I use spare alpha keys for those punctuation keys to have the main board in all-metal.

Im investigating making an ultralight keyboard using a capacitive pcb. What do you think would be the lightest key mechanism/cover? I'm prioritising weight savings over comfort/feel.

bought a Glove 80 before I knew all of this. The pom keycaps took a bit of getting used to because of the slipperyness, but now they feel great. Also got a Defy and that took getting used to as well coming from the Glove 80. Seems to be a personal preference, but I'm glad I know why they feel different. I love both keyboards now that I have them programmed the same (within the limitations of the form factor) and I use the Defy for work because it's not as hard to get setup right and the carry case fits in my bag better. I use the Glove at home because I end up typing more there and the keywells are a little more comfortable for long sessions. Both help with my RSI, now I just need to find a mouse, which is turning out to be much more challenging.
I have those exact ceramic keycaps on my raise :o. They were a pain to get on but they are worth it. They make my super light pink switches even lighter.
@@DygmaLab Yeah, it's pretty darn smooth. I'd probably get tactiles for just typing, but the main thing I use my keyboard for is pvp games, so the quick inputs really help.
I'm currently in a keyboard crisis. I've gone through a keyboard where the S and D keys' top edges have their paint worn out (it could be my left hand's posture, I'm not sure), possibly due to fingernail scratches (my fingernails are consistently short). I'm considering finding replacement keycaps, one preferably without a paint job to scratch off. Would metal keycaps fit the bill?

7:09 so you're telling me a cubic centimetre of these plastics, which is the equivalent volume of one millilitre, are all above 1.2kg? I think you missed a period there as 1.XYZg, otherwise this should be for 1dm^3 which is one litre and would then match the density of these materials...
Great video, really interesting. Could you maybe do a sound test with gateron pro 2.0 yellows? Cherry mx reds aren't really up to enthusiast standards and it's hard to visualize how a custom keyboard would sound.
I have some of the metal keycaps, and the edges of the keys are so sharp they could probably cut me if Iwasn't being careful. I kept the esc key and won't use the rest.
Very instructive hands-on! I've been wondering about POM, metal, ceramic and wooden caps for a while. Never even thought of rubber. The only coverage I miss is typing styles. If you (like many) lift off each finger before jumping to the next key, ranking these stainless steel caps high (and POM/ceramic very low) totally makes sense. However, if your fingers slide from key to key, some slickness actually helps! And more importantly, cap edges need to be smooth. Sharp caps easily disrupt horizontal motion, and these metal ones look like particularly sharp. OTOH, the shape of these ceramic or POM caps should be great for sliders. (Of course, shape is - mostly - independent of material, so in theory, ceramic caps could also be very sharp, and metal caps very smooth.) Thanks again for all the great content you give to us!

There's something important to keep in mind when you see reviews like these, we ca give you the most accurate description of the materials, with the cinstruction details, etc... However, rating things we touch is very personal, those are Miquel and Dominique's opinions, but there's no need to agree with them. POM keycaps can be what works for you and no one can say otherwise. When making the video, several team members tested the keys, and some think the POM are the best aswell 😉
I am not a native spanish speaker, and for a while (I was more listening to the video as opposed to watching it) and I kept thinking they were saying "Foam" instead of "POM"
If we were to re-do this video, we'd probably use other, less mic-noisy switches. The MX Red are not clicky at all in real life, but the spring ping was too noticeable in the sound recording.
I actually use Tai-Hao rubber caps for my "gaming" keyboard, just the switches I use the most - but for everyday typing and work then defy don't go for them
The case ping and stabilizer rattle distract from any sound profile you are attempting to demonstrate. Informative content but rough sound comparisons. Many average prices keycaps can sound phenomenal on a well tuned Keeb.

for me the fake walnut ones sounded the best. I couldn't stand the scratchiness of the rest of them. it was muted a little with the ceramics, but definitely nowhere near as much as it should be for the price.
So to be 100% honest, the "wood" keycaps are actually PBT with wood looking color from Aliexpress and they still end up top 2 among the most usable ones. Because in really they're just PBT doubleshot and those along with ABS are the only actually usable materials. Gotcha.

The gold on gold keyboard is the pure definition of opulence. For some is too much, but those who like it, love it 😉 As for the Rubber keycaps, they have a very particular feel, but hey, if you want grip, you'll get what you paid for 😅

Besides, that V2 model with pastic stem holders is going to be a blast because removes the only thing holding them back

PBT are the less prone to shine. And then there are a gazillion levels of quality in ABS. Some get a permanent shine, while the ones that we designed can get a bit glossy, but you can clean that.
From being a big fan of PBT, I now can’t use anything but POM. At first I hated the smoothness but it has grown on me to the point than anything else just feels wrong.
Well, the thing with this video is that we can be as descriptive as possible, but touch and feel are very personal stuff. Some people can't stand silk, some people love it, and none of them is wrong. Here's a bit of the same, every material has pros and cons, it's up to each person to decide 😊

Damn, that's bad to hear, sorry about that 😢 We had to cut pretty deep to remove the rubber layer to make sure how it was made and attached, but it's great to hear from experience that they might have issues in the long run, thanks for the info and better luck with the keysets in the future!
I have to say i like the concept and setting of this video. There are not many reviews like yours. But i have to say the keyboards and mics you use are just not as good as they should be for this kind of product you are reviewing. I would watch your content in the future 100% if you would improve in that field.
I tried real wood keycaps before but didn't like them :S They are slippery and don't fit into the aesthetics of 99% of the keyboards. They sound okay :P I wanted to get the metal ones from Aliexpress but I'm still not convinced about the legends :S
"And they turned out to be plastic" ..... The title of the Aliexpress page you showed clearly states it's a PBT keycap. Also, don't claim to review wood keycaps if you're not reviewing wood keycaps. Your Thumbnail says wood and your description says wood. So before you even get 12 minutes into the video, you've already lied twice, and then when a viewer gets there, you've wasted their time if they were specifically looking for a review on wood. Not the greatest decision. At a minimum, you should change your thumbnail and description. It's not that hard and changes nothing in the content, and it makes you no longer misleading. It's a shame really because otherwise the video is pretty decent.

first of all you both really don't know anything about a keyboard.. trying any keycaps on red switch will not make a difference cause red switches are marked as silent switch but not completely silent .. if you try it with other switch it does make a difference which are not browns or blue ~ clicky

As you can see our keyboards don't have spacebar, but they have 8 thumbkeys. Maybe what you wanted to say is to try the sound of a key with stabilizer, and you are right, we should have done that too 😊
The most criminal part is using Cherry MX Red switches. The switch sound drowns out any differences created by the materials.

You are right, it should be 1.210g/cm3 or 1,210mg/cm3 in case, for example, of ABS. Our fault 😬

The plastic fills it, and you can remive the cushion and clean it, other than pulling them and inserting agaiin, there`s no big problem

We changed the thumbnail to say "wood" because it's not real Wood. Fake wood didn't fit.
Using cherry switches to sound-test these caps is such a disservice.
It's the switch we had more of to set up all the keyboards. At least they where lubed!
From being a big fan of PBT, I now can’t use anything but POM. At first I hated the smoothness but it has grown on me to the point than anything else just feels wrong.
Well, the thing with this video is that we can be as descriptive as possible, but touch and feel are very personal stuff. Some people can't stand silk, some people love it, and none of them is wrong. Here's a bit of the same, every material has pros and cons, it's up to each person to decide 😊
I had some rubber keycaps and the rubber layer wore off quite fast and it left the keys looking kind of gross. Very disappointing!

We had to cut pretty deep to remove the rubber layer to make sure how it was made and attached, but it's great to hear from experience that they might have issues in the long run, thanks for the info and better luck with the keysets in the future!
I have to say i like the concept and setting of this video.
There are not many reviews like yours.
But i have to say the keyboards and mics you use are just not as good as they should be for this kind of product you are reviewing.
I would watch your content in the future 100% if you would improve in that field.

I tried real wood keycaps before but didn't like them :S They are slippery and don't fit into the aesthetics of 99% of the keyboards. They sound okay :P
I wanted to get the metal ones from Aliexpress but I'm still not convinced about the legends :S

"And they turned out to be plastic" ..... The title of the Aliexpress page you showed clearly states it's a PBT keycap. Also, don't claim to review wood keycaps if you're not reviewing wood keycaps. Your Thumbnail says wood and your description says wood. So before you even get 12 minutes into the video, you've already lied twice, and then when a viewer gets there, you've wasted their time if they were specifically looking for a review on wood. Not the greatest decision. At a minimum, you should change your thumbnail and description. It's not that hard and changes nothing in the content, and it makes you no longer misleading. It's a shame really because otherwise the video is pretty decent.
We apologize if you felt that we misled you. At the time of purchase, we believed the product was made of wood (AliExpress updated the keycaps' title later). However, we still want to demonstrate how these keycaps with wood coating sound 😊

The metal keycaps are cool, but watch out the weight thing if you're going to move the keyboard around, it adds 200grams to the weight of the board.

Don’t include the wood keycaps if they’re not wood, you could say “bonus” but don’t give false advertising as that can not sit well with your viewers and affect your future traffic

first of all you both really don't know anything about a keyboard.. trying any keycaps on red switch will not make a difference cause red switches are marked as silent switch but not completely silent .. if you try it with other switch it does make a difference which are not browns or blue ~ clicky
