    Survival. Everyone has watched those shows on TV and have thought about what it would be like to survive in the woods. I took it one step further and decided to embark on a solo survival adventure. Alone on Vancouver Island, I test my survival skills built upon a knowledge base of bushcraft and camping. This is the first real solo survival in the woods test I have given myself. I built a survival shelter, ate some some survival food, and learned a few things along the way. Overall, it was a really awesome trip, hard at times, but really rewarding. I hope you all enjoy the video,
    Dave

      Trill Artie (beware this became a long comment) yeah its kinda natural for you people (which is cool), but you should at least have bear spray and a first aid kit and a knife at least. I'm 18 and I want to do this kind of thing but I probably would be the only one in my family th a t would want to (other then my brother who *might* want to), plus I don't have my license yet so I can't just go to the store buy things I would need and go to a location, plus I would need to get educated on plants and trees and all that stuff before I would dare do anything I mean I could take enough food for the duration, but at the same time there is the what if I'm storm stayed or can't get out and need to get some sort of food. I live in Northwest BC in a subdivision just out side of town (about 5 to 10 min drive) from where I live so it's also kinda hard hard can't just do in my backyard into some forest, but but I could quad a little ways to a location, but I'd want some one to go with.

      Absolutely! I never go to the mountains of the Pacific Northwest without it. I use the magnum size from UDAP Industries. That one shoots 30 feet! It only takes ONE TIME to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
      Keep up the good work. Looking forward to future videos!

    • @bodyoftruth7766
      @bodyoftruth7766 7 років тому +9

      You might as well bring a defibulator kit because you're more likely to suffer a heart attack then be attacked by a bear. I live in the Pacific Northwest and see them all the time. Probably the most underrated and vital piece of survivor gear for expeditions like this is a satellite phone. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people get "rescued" because they twisted their ankle or knee.

    • @plasticapple704
      @plasticapple704 7 років тому +17

      Body of Truth Yes, bear attacks are rare. But it only takes ONE TIME to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think all of the people that HAVE been attacked by bears would think your comment was a bit careless. I see bears in the Pacific Northwest also and most of them just run away. But we're talking about a wild animal here. Just because you've never been attacked by a bear in the past doesn't mean it will never happen. I'd rather be prepared for the unexpected than to be mocho and end up being a bear's lunch. Bear spray is cheap insurance that I'm willing to buy and wear on my hip when in bear country.
      And yes, satellite phones are great to have in the wilderness. We carry DeLorme InReach Exporer Satellite devices right along with our bear spray and guns.
      Take care and be safe.

    • @plasticapple704
      @plasticapple704 7 років тому +6

      yourleftnut1 The bear spray I carry is from UDAP Industries, shoots 30 feet and is the hottest legally available. It's also oil based so the big orange ball of fire hangs in the air so the bear basically runs right into it. I also carry various guns, including high powered rifles. When you have a bear charging you is the wrong time to "attempt" to aim a rifle because you'll probably miss.
      Really good bear spray (like what I use) has a very wide spray pattern so you're a lot more likely to hit the bear with your first attempt. Which just might save your life or the life of someone that's with you.
      Take care and be safe.

    Hi , I found your channel last night. I've watched many shows like yours, so I was surprised when I saw a new person ( to me) doing them.
    I watched 6 of yours since last night !! Hats how much I enjoy yours. I've never watched 6 of anyone's, never mind in one night. What set you apart from everyone was simple. When I was younger ( I'm 59 now) I would go anywhere myself in the woods I was afraid of Nothing... I watched your Solo on Vancouver Island as my 1st one. You broght up what I found as Very very important to me,, you talked about Why you weren't afraid in woods, about maybe it's something else your afraid of in life, not really the Wildlife. I wish you would complete that idea to us. I think you might have hit on something many can relate to, Myself included. Also even More important to me was you talked of your Christian background,, which is Huge to me. I too am Christian, but where I currently live in Arizona it's mainly Mormons, & they have been calling, I've met with them several times etc. I don't think I should discuss now what they pitched to me,, for its opposite of what I've always believed about my loved ones who passed before me.
    My point is, You are the 1st person on one of these shows that brought up Christianity, & it got my attention BIG TIME my friend.
    Keep up the great shows,, Stay Safe Stay Healthy God Bless you & your family. Peace,, Jim Gibbs of Az. Formerly of New Hampshire..

    • @BachBusoni
      @BachBusoni 5 років тому

      I was wondering that too, but A) if it does that, it'll run all the way around the log and drip off the bottom, so it won't get him directly, and B) if he plugged the union of the lean-to logs and the tree with dirt and moss, it would be sealed as well as the lean-to wall.

    Well, with the ocean right there, might think of digging a pit far enough from the water so you can channel the water in and catch some small fish in that pit. Warm protein has advantages over teas, greens, and roots. Since you are in BC and close enough to Seattle and the puget sound, I would for sure avoid eating any shellfish in that area. But fish are good.

    Thanks Dave! I really enjoy watching your videos. Very simple and real. You use regular basic kit and clothing etc.. you do it for "REAL"!! You keep it plain and simple. I love it. Nice to see a guy with knowledge and genuine love for the outdoors. You aren't full of arrogance or attitude. I get the impression from your videos that if someone came across a base camp you made and used it, you wouldn't have a tantrum. Especially since it's public land!! You'd be happy someone was able to make use of it.. (as long as they respected it and the woods) Your the real deal. Nothing fancy, doing it the way most of us do. Thank you so much for keeping it REAL! The only complaint I may have is that your so blessed to live where you do and I don't! LOL I did live in BEAUTIFUL BRITISH COLUMBIA back in the late 80's for a while with my Dad and his family. Was in Army Cadets, SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS and got to go on manoeuvres at CFB Chillawack a few times. Loved that. Swimming in glacier fed rivers.. (raisin bag) was an experience. Been outback horse back with my brother a few years back in the Summerland area of the Okanagan! Beautiful semi desert area.
    Ontario is beautiful, don't get me wrong. I just have to travel for hours to get to the most beautiful part of it. , the central/northern parts. We are in Southern Ontario. Mostly private lands and not too many people give permission for use. I've tried many land owners with not much success. I don't get why but that's the deal. Some Crown land is close but not a lot. My 10 yr old and I get out into the bush as much as we can, hard at times with both kids other activities and responsibilities. So usually it's local areas that are quick to get to for overnights or day hikes, bushcrafting or fishing. The more Beautiful areas are more of a planned organized vacation type outing. Driving 7-8 hrs to the north. So that's why I'm jealous that your lucky to live where you do with fairly fast access to beautiful available lands.
    Anyway, enough whining about my lack of land to use for a quick easily accessible overnight.
    Keep the videos coming and keep being yourself. My son watches your videos and I have no worries about language or the need to drink alcoholic beverages etc. Thank you for family friendly, knowledgable videos.

    • @TheDaveDryden

      Thanks for the kind words there. I came to the Island for the that reason really to be closer to nature and crownland to do what I want in lol. One day Ill do an Ontario trip up north where you say as it is a special place incomparable to others. I understand how hard it can be to find places, living in the lower mainland there isn't too much around besides chiliwack. and it is usually overrun with 4x4, drinkers, shot gun shooters, etc.. I love the interior though, I had family who lived in Summerland, and I spent a summer there with them one year. really great places there to explore and totally different environment then here too. Im glad you and your son get something from watching my videos, I try not to swear and I don't talk about drinking very much, only a beer here and there in older vids. take care

    It was a good one. It showed what to do, and more importantly, why. More hunters need to watch these types of videos. When hunting, these days, most people take all most nothing. There is a need for those types of videos. I have a nephew that went hunting, close by were he lives, got turned around, and had to make do for that night and most of the next day. Thankfully, this was in the summer time, but if it were winter, late fall, the young man could have died for lack of knowledge and perpetration.

    Just an idea to help you out, use the top down fire method. Very simple to construct and it will burn for a very long time. A lot of energy is wasted because regular fire burns too fast. It consumes all your BTUs too fast. Also find your angles. IR radiation from a fire is the same as light. It reflects off of objects. So if you build your lean to at a angle that allows your Infared Radiation to bounce back towards you. My son and I do a lot of these type's of bushcraft training. We too have learned through trial and error. Now on a positive note, you did work with what you had and that is good. Nothing ever works in our favor. We have to adapt to our environment in order to survive in the woods.

    • @TheDaveDryden
      @TheDaveDryden  7 років тому

      Ya man I appreciate the comment. I've done top down fires before but I felt rushed this time out. I wish I did an open front lean to as well to defeat the cold. Like you said about reflecting the heat it would have warmed me better. But I was worried about getting soaking wet so I built what I thought was a good shelter for heavy rain from different angles. Even a half tepee with fire in front would have kept me warmer. Not sure drier though

    Tip for keeping warm at night.
    Fill your bottle with water and get it to a nice boil. Put one of your extra socks around it and put it under your boughs. It'll radiate heat for a pretty long time. Kind of an easier to manage alternative to heating rocks. You can also put it inside your shirt if you're really hard up but you gotta make sure the bottle cap isn't going to come undone and you've got enough pad on it to not burn yourself. Cheers dude, fun times in the bush to you.

    • @TheDaveDryden
      @TheDaveDryden  7 років тому

      Alloran I actually did that is trip, I had the water bottle instead my sweatshirt. it really helps but even then you get cold else where haha

    • @Alloran
      @Alloran 7 років тому

      pretty crazy how much thermal energy water holds huh? I made the blunder of forgetting a sleeping bag on an overnight hike and only had plastic water bottles with lids I didn't trust. Had to heat rocks and drape my spare underwear over them to get through the night. I've had better sleeps.
      You ever try a long fire for keeping warm? I hear they're pretty awesome, provided you can get them properly going. Never tried myself, maybe it's something to give a go. I don't think it'd really work for that particular shelter construction but it's something to keep in your hip pocket.

    • @TheDaveDryden
      @TheDaveDryden  7 років тому

      Alloran at night I wish I did have a long fire but you really do need like an open lean to construction for it to heat you up. I have made them while tarp camping but you spend a lot of time re stoking the fire at night. so you are warm but you still don't get a good full sleep lol. lessons learned, each time out like that just gives you a better understanding of the environment you are in
