    Me and my friends from uni have this tradition where every spring and autumn we come to the woods, set a camp and enjoy the outside with a bit of survival thrown in.
    These days were always a highpoint in my, admittedly, not so fun life.
    This spring, for obvious reasons, we couldn't do the usual thing, and I've felt genuinely down because of that.
    And yet, here I am, watching your video, with a big stupid grin on my face.
    You're probably not going to read this, but you've just made one man a lot happier. Thank you.

      Its not as hard as you think. If you break it down and accept the truth, which is the fact you either build a shelter or die, its actually quite easy to build one. Its amazing how much energy the threat of impending death can grant an individual.
      That's not to belittle the guys work of course. More to say that if you find making a shelter hard, you've never had the threat of death to spur you on.

    What I like about you Joe, and why I have subscribed to your channel, is that you always post deliberate and truthful videos, and are not 'stuck in your ego'. You remain "unmasked". That is a very rare quality of purposeful character, especially with the type of videos you are posting. You come straight from the Heart, and I thank you for it..
    I looked up your channel after being recommended to it by Shawn James (Another great YT teacher IMNSHO). What I like best about you, Joe, is that you aren't trying to "act like" anything, and you too also, like Shawn, are a natural teacher. I learn something else good and important from every one of your videos I watch.
    Thank you for the high-quality material you post on your channel, and Thank you for being yourself :-). :-) also glad the eye is OK :-). Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge with us.

      @averageheretic 6 років тому +10

      smithers that fluff he is using to insulate the back wall= dirt. Or rather what dirt is made up of in that forest. Dead dry pine needles don't degrade well.
      It's not that densely packed. It can smolder pulling oxygen from above and between the surrounding fluff. It doesn't necessarily "burn" so much as smolder.
      Hope that's helpful? I may be too stoned to explain well.
      I live in Washington state. A lot of our forests have this same "flooring".

    • @jordydormans6063
      @jordydormans6063 6 років тому +5

      @@@smithers4420 it ain't a fire like we are use to above the surface. A fire below ground works a little different. It is not exactly a fire. If you burn paper but you put put tge flame itself, you will see the rest of the paper still slowly burns away. This hot, glowing line that slowly eats up the paper.
      The same thing happens under ground. And there is oxygen underground. But as things are burning like that hot line on a paper it does not uses that many of it. Oxygen is also stored in the soil and in plants and roots of trees. and if there are lots of holes in the ground like fox and rabbit holes it pulls even more oxygen.
      There is this abandoned village in America where they by accident lighted up the coals underground underneath the village. This happened many years ago yet the coals are still burning ;)
      You should look it up it is very interesting

    Did a couple of nights of winter survival training in Ely, Mn. for Army aviators. We stayed in snow shelters with snow filled parachute silk for door plugs. It was blowing and twenty below outside but nice and comfy inside just using a candle for heat. Our military issue goose down sleeping bags were rated for minus forty so that was a big help. Would love to go out and do it again. One warning about booze and cold, the alcohol in a bottle can potentially get cold enough to freeze your throat and even though alcohol initially makes you feel warmer the long term effect will rob you of your body heat.

Went to anchorage for a couple of weeks in June one summer I'll never forget the swarms of mosquitoes that would cover our UH-1H's when we stopped in an LZ for some local orientation. The one place that green wood is preferable is the fire reflector. For one live softwood you drastically reduce the likelihood of the reflector burning and get to use the boughs for your bed.

    I would never in a million years be able to do this type of thing, but I love watching you do it!! I found your video's in my suggested feed, probably because I follow Canadian Prepper, and Survival Lilly. I really enjoy what you do, and that you do it just for the sheer joy of doing it! It's so nice to see someone enjoying themselves, on their own, with so much knowledge and energy. I loved you face, after the long pause following your swig of whiskey! Too funny.

    Rocks are a great idea but if you use river rock be cautious because it has a tendency to explode at high temps .

      My parents knew this couple that got a really nice sculpted fire pit, made of river rock. I'm sure you can guess how that went. Amazingly enough no one got hurt. They had all stepped away from the fire for one reason or another before the explosion.
