- Acton Lecture Series (May 6, 2010) - Saul Alinsky might be called the "anti-Acton". As Lord Acton warned that power corrupts, Saul Alinsky -- the father of modern "community organizing" -- rejoiced that corruption empowers. Decades after Alinsky's death his ideas and teaching continue to shape the American political and social landscape. Barack Obama's first job in Chicago was as an "organizer" for an Alinsky group; Hillary Clinton's undergraduate thesis was written on Alinsky's precepts; contemporary organizations from the notorious ACORN to the Catholic-Church-supported United for Power and Justice are among Alinsky's progeny. This lecture supplies an overview of Alinksy's thinking and shows its application in current events.
Mr. Joseph A. Morris, a graduate of the college and the law school of the University of Chicago, is a partner in the law firm of Morris & De La Rosa, with offices in Chicago and London, maintaining an active practice in constitutional, business, labor, and international law. He is a member of the bars of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of Illinois, and several other courts. Mr. Morris served under President Reagan as assistant attorney general of the United States [in charge of international affairs and director of the Department of Justice Office of Liaison Services. He has appeared on numerous national and local television and radio programs. He has served as an American delegate to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva. A leader in B'nai B'rith, he is also a member of the advisory board of Catholic Citizens of Illinois.

unfortunately, the catholic church has compromised since the beginning of its roots, but a lot of churches have done this. i defected from the lutheran church and now the "jesus people" that are also part of the compromising mentality that the catholics have are hurting so many peoples lives, and believe it, or not even doing things that are SUPPORTING TERRORISTS! This is not an exaggeration, but if you don't think that the Catholic Church was already a false church before communist infiltrated it, consider that they have been praying to dead people which the Bible condemn and making the church a club for homosexuals and pedophiles by preaching that priest can't marry which is nowhere to be found in the Bible! Since it's not to be found in the Bible and it has created so many problems with molesting children and making the church a homosexual playground why would you even continue to do that? The answer is because the Catholic Church is not a real church. It's evil. Even though Martin Luther had some valid points, he was also evil!
There are a lot of comments that remind me the real end goal: Take down the establishment - the order. This is a great plan to remove God, create a power vacuum (lack of good) and make room for Lucifer to take over. There is no such thing as a neutral power. If God or Truth is removed, then chaos reigns.

There is no great plan to remove God. The idea God is simply a figurehead for whomever is using the term to promote an agenda/idea and/or exercise power as gained from using the beliefs of others.. There is no great plan to remove establishment, since, the "removal" of an establishment is the installation of an establishment / new order. Thus, there is always an establishment and chaos never reigns unless there is no establishment/order.
I fully agree that there is no neutral power at least if such is actually used.

The real purpose for having a senate based upon the states had more to do with slavery then current divisions. I think that everything these people try to achieve is an inversion of reality. They consciously try to do good, but they end-up creating destruction. A path is souhgt on the outside (social environment) rather than on the inside (individual personality). I think that only if we change on the inside will our actions create a better social environment on the outside - by consequence. No social change should be forcefully imposed, because one will only create trouble.
I would argue that they do NOT have good intentions, they crave power & the thrill of it. They don't care about the women of Islam being oppressed, because it doesn't help the agenda. They don't care about the poor, look what the Clinton machine did in Haiti. They don't care about the gays in Pakistan being thrown off of rooftops. Good intentions? Not so much... But the problem is that the speaker uses the rules for radicals within this talk to attack alinsky. The speaker pointed out the alinsky rules were successfully applied by Sons of Liberty. That John Adams successfully defended the British soldiers does not change the fact that those rules were not invented by alinsky nor first applied in America. Just to be clear I share the positive view that the speaker had regarding American exceptionalism.

He was agitating for power to poor people, so they get their share, avoid worse revolutions towards communism. Remember, if you are poor, you have no "ability". You can't be a Lawyer, at a think tank. How do you take back the power of wealth, political influence to improve your community? How do you get "ability." Answer - Agitate, Disrupt, Organize. Robert Peterson Before watching this video I watched a very interesting video about Alynsky that exposes him in a very straight forward way with real RELEVANT information about him and about his mindset, not this formal review about his works or whatever. I wish I could show you so you could compare both but it is not in english.

From the rest of your post, it appears what you were looking for was some kind of Freudian or psychological analysis of Alinsky himself. And you're criticizing Morris for talking about Alinsky's works instead. With all due respect, that's kind of a ridiculous criticism.
How truly silly! Clearly Mr. Morris demonstrates he has an agenda and no real understanding of Alinsky style organizing. It is impossible to mobilize people to build any organization; factory or community where no real immediate issues exist and no organizer would even try and Alinsky never did. "Issues come from the people" in short, there must be issues (problems defined by that community). There is no preconceived agenda other than the building of people power. Morris exhibits a profound misunderstanding when he criticizes Alinsky for a lack of an end game. There was no promised land. That is because the end game, the "Promised Land" was not defined by Alinsky, it was defined by the community. Despite all attempts to mischaracterize it, Alinskyism is a methodology not an ideology. Organizing is not a battle between the left and the lefter. Alinsky was not a Marxist, not even close.
Slavery was a great evil, according to Mr. Morris, but, after all, everybody did it. Our nation, says Mr. Morris, was the first country to say, "All men were created equal" but he conveniently forgets that Thomas Jefferson, the man who wrote those words, lived in Virginia where 4/5th of the population were slaves and owned 130 African people and whose own slave children served him at table. These people, if not enslaved, remained disenfranchised until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
Morris misses the entire point in Alinsky's discussion of means and ends in Rules For Radicals. The Boston Massacre was a cause celebre which helped to generate the the energy and character of the American Revolution. as it a lie? Morris says it was, the melee was begun by the crowd and the British were defending themselves. The fact that John Adams defended the British troopers had little or nothing to do with that. The Massacre (if lie it was) became an effective propaganda tool, even though Boston residents may have initiated the actions that caused it. If the ends don't justify the means, what does justify the means? "Thou Shall Not Kill" is one of the Ten Commandments, but is killing never justified? What if the gun is trained on you? Are you justified in disobeying a Commandment by killing your attacker, or should you, perhaps, turn the other cheek?
