  • Indigenous youth, led by Duke Redbird, argue their ideas against the blunt pragmatism of American activist and writer Saul Alinksy. Author of the book “Rules for Radicals”, Alinsky is widely considered the father of community organizing who spent his life advocating for improved living conditions in poor communities across the United States. In this impassioned debate, the young activists question the corrupting influence of power, and ask why Indigenous people cannot live traditionally and peacefully on the land. Alinsky responds, “You have got to be part of the world in order to change it. You are not going to make any changes by staying in your corner.” In Alinsky’s view, equality only happens when the disenfranchised have the strength to show the ruling powers that it will be more costly for them to withhold it. Encounter with Saul Alinksy offers fascinating insights into a conversation about power and activism that has lasting resonance today.

    Duke Redbird (born 1939) is an Aboriginal Canadian poet, journalist, activist, businessman, actor and administrator, best known as a key figure in the development of First Nations literature in Canada. An Ojibwe from the Saugeen First Nation in Southwestern Ontario ,he became the vice-president of Native Council of Canada. After earning a master's degree in political science from York University, his academic thesis was then published in 1980. He subsequently served as president of the Ontario Métis and Non-Status Indian Association
    currently his philosophy of activism had shifted: "I'm still a kind of activist, but it's on a different level. Now, I'm an elder, a wisdom-keeper, a sharer. I try to help people from community - aboriginal, indigenous people who may be Metis, First Nations or Inuit - who are assembling strategies to accomplish their goals. Wisdom is choosing the right goal. It's my job to ask: Is it wise?"

      Oh stop. He's not a communist, man. He's essentially an organizer to help poor folks mobilize against the likes of the ruling class; to me there's nothing more American than that. I guess this is the lingering effect Glenn Beck has had -- his indelible legacy of Neo-mccarthyism.

      @@mattm3729 He was close enough. And if you haven't noticed, when people decide to get greedy, and want what other people worked for, thats exactly what you end with. Communism/Marxism/Socialism. Its NOT American to demand people give you things for free. Because anytime someone gets something for nothing, someone else has to work, and get nothing. In the end, EVERYONE ENDS UP WITH NOTHING, EXCEPT THE RULING CLASS, WHO ARE THE POLITICAL LEADERS. In America we have never had a ruling class. What we do have are endless taxes and regulations put in by the left which keep enterprising people from becoming wealthy.

    The problem is looking and blaming other people. The only privilege people have is if they were born to wealthy parents and if you were not you might have to work harder. People today make this racist. But whatever. Each person is individually responsible so stop looking as a group. Change your life and then teach others to follow. Stop crying about what rich people have. Most of them earned it and work hard. I’m not envious and I’m content. This is the issue EVIL. Not being content and thankful you have food and clothing and shelter. No. You want to mansion and And filet mignon dinners. Ah man this world.

    • @Grasslander
      @Grasslander 3 роки тому

      "Privilege" means to have advantages by law because of belonging to a certain group. Having wealthy parents is not "privilege," that's leftist propaganda. The only privilege is Blacks getting university seats and jobs taken from Whites who studied harder and had better qualifications, but were ditched because they were Whites. Whites are discriminated against. U.S. Blacks are the most privileged group in the West. And that doesn't cover the other privileges, such as illegal aliens getting free medical care all over the West.
      But in Marxist talk, all groups and individuals are equal, so if some do better that can only be because they are "oppressors," and if some do worse and commit crime that can only be because they are "oppressed".

    Saul is right imo. The system isn't coming to you. Has it ever? He had a practical suggestion to get a start. Organize around one issue. Learn to organize your people. All things that change begin w a conversation and the willingness to speak to those who want to help you, first. Don't give in, don't give up, and get media coverage. Put the pressure on! Saul was tireless in trying to get so many people to understand how change happens. It takes time and strategy. Bless the First Nations, their Ancestors, and their continued efforts to survive and thrive.

      Saul is right and wrong. His method still depends on creating outrage. We are finally seeing the turn around time, where no matter how hard the left brainwashes kids, people are far less likely to believe in grievances from minorities. So without outrage, there is no pressure. BLM broke the toy.

      What he offered was how people can sell their souls and become what they don't want to be and follow what they dont believe in. He and Edward Bernays managed to ruin a lot of people's lives and a lot of society. Thankfully, some of us see right through them and their manipulations.

    My problem with Alinsky is that, in spite of his efforts to make important change, he actually produced the "least worst" outcome because the reins of the economy still rested with the capitalist economic and POLITICAL system. In his confrontation with xerox corporation and the resulting agreement, Alinsky did not, as far as the UA-cam video showed, also incorporate unionization for the black perspective workers. All in all, it's a "least worst" compromise~exactly what he despised.

    • @PCorNPC

      The problem with Alinsky and all those who have been led around by him, is that Alinsky has no sincerity. All he has are empty promises and constant agitation that becomes meaningless wind chasing.
      Once I found out they will agitate until I give an Alinsky fool what they want, then I knew that's exactly what i will not ever give them. And i can do it without being agitated.

      Of course economics will always rest there...but sounds like you expect people to just lie down and resign? People always talk, but don't do anything. At least he knows how to create change rather than letting change create him.
