    If you have children it would be wise to go over the budget with them after you and your spouse go over it. That way they learn about budgeting and understand why they should wait on something they may want.

    • @mappedoutmoney
      @mappedoutmoney  5 років тому +1

      YES! Absolutely. This is something we plan to do when we have kids one day. I think it would be extremely helpful for them. Thanks so much for watching Charles and for the suggestion!

      I agree Yes and No. children have a way to spread all your business. 😆 I definitely think they should see their parents discussing money and saving for purchases etc.

    Your advice is pure gold. There's more here than how to budget with your spouse. If you succeed with all this, I'm pretty sure you're going to do more than make a working budget. You're also going to majorly level up your marital happiness.
    My wife and I are doing great financially, able to afford whatever we want, within reason. Even so, I think we need to get together and dream about something big. It would be good for us to have to pull on a rope together, like you describe. It doesn't even have to involve money. Date night is tonight. I think I'm going to start a conversation.

    Figuring out your WHY together is so important, that is how I was able to get Jayme on board with budgeting and cutting our spending so that we can reach out big financial goals!

    • @mappedoutmoney

      Absolutely! Glad that this worked for you with Jayme. It really is the source to getting on the same page and absolutely why you have to start with it. Thanks for sharing that Kelly :)

    The tip about both parties having access to the budget is very smart. I have been using my own budget in google sheets that I have on my phone and my boyfriend literally asks me which credit card or account to use with every single purchase because he never looks at the budget. I'm switching to YNAB and I hope I can get him to use the app and make some decisions on his own so he feels more in control.

    As a pastor who handles premarital counseling I can see that you handled remarkably well one one of three areas of, um, challenge when she goes from "Miss" to MRS: m-oney, r-elatives, s-ex. First and foremost is communication. Well done!

    Thanks Nick great video! I'm engaged to be married later this year and we have had many conversations about how we will do this together. The best tip for me is to sit down with her and ask her about her dreams and goals. This will help lighten the budget talk and help us both to map out our plan to reach our potential. Thank you again for the video!

      This might be the tactic I need to use on my hubby, as he doesn’t “get” the idea of budgeting as we are not in debt as such other than having a mortgage.

    • @mappedoutmoney
      @mappedoutmoney  5 років тому +1

      Absolutely, even though you may not have other debt, you still likely have things you'd want to do, places to go, and goals to hit. And budgeting helps you do those things :)

    Guys! I seriously love you guys ! So my fiance went on a little weekend get away to reset and plan and had much of these conversations. I have a 4 year old he is adopting.
    We're getting married in April and due to personal beliefs and choices were staying in seperate places...how about not being able to save money 😖😩. But we were able to sit down and really sit down and say why are we doing this ? What is our heart behind this?
    You guys remind us of ourselves it's quite beautiful.
    But finally. The ynab app...we have a small time bank and ynab is the first financial app that has it !! Praiseee 🙌keep it up guys you rock

    Word of caution: I've found it is a bit counterproductive to reward myself for good budgeting habits by doing something that then spends the money. (Same with rewarding yourself for exercising by getting Ben & Jerry's). I always try to find a reward that isn't moving backwards or tempting me into bad habits.

    Proverbs 18:21 relates to the labels. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits." If you are constantly speaking "Spender" "Saver" "Looser" etc then don't be surprised when that is all you get.

    Ive been using YNAB for a few years, but Ive just now gotten to the point that I am REALLY using it or having it as an effective prebudgeting tool. Is there a way that my husband and I can download the app on our phones and look at one budget? I am currently the one that primarily uses it and I would like him to be able to see what we are dealing with.

    • @mappedoutmoney
      @mappedoutmoney  5 років тому +1

      Hey Jesse! So glad that you're finally using it effectively. That's great news :) And yes! You totally can. If you both download the YNAB app on your phone, you just simply need to login to the same account. So if YNAB is setup with your email, just have your husband download the YNAB app and then login with your account email and you both can see the same budget.
      That's what Hanna and I do and it keeps us on the same page :)

    Nick thanks for the videos! I started using YNAB at the end of 2018 and started watching your videos then. I am getting married in about six months and just starting the conversation with my fiance about joining finances. She is down to work together and budget but doesnt want to feel restricted. I have a pretty efficient system in place with my standard income. I get the same amount into my direct deposit bi weekly. merging two different paychecks into one ynab seems so daunting and I can't seem to wrap my head around it. She is a nurse and her paychecks amounts are variable every week. Any tips on how to start this? I dont how how I would fill in the budgeting categories evenly with two different paychecks. After we dont get paid the same day! So is it first come first serve with the paychecks? Whichever check comes in first gets allocated to the fixed monthly expenses or what? I am an accountant so I could be making this way more complicated because I like things to be precise and exact. I am going to contribute proportionally more I think since I am making slightly more. Tips please and any words of encouragement on how to incorporate YNAB with two people. It has been a Godsend for me, but at the moment it doesn't seem like a viable option with two paychecks coming in at separate times. Thanks and let me know,!

    So Hanna ditched the PT life? Thought travel PT can be pretty lucrative (~$1700+/week) with all the tax write offs compared to perm jobs. But good for her for pursuing business with you!

    • @hannatrue150
      @hannatrue150 5 років тому +2

      Hey, Tyler! Yeah, I left PT in March '18. I didn't love working in the healthcare system. And Nick and I obviously have a lot more travel flexibility since we can both work remotely. So we can to take full advantage of living in an Airstream :)
      You do make good money as a travel PT... but it's not as straightforward as recruiters will make it seem. In travel world, you make a really low hourly wage and then the majority of your income comes in the form of stipends, which are hypothetically tax-free. But there are a lot of stipulations around not paying taxes on your stipends (I actually have a friend who got in hot water because she didn't totally understand this).
      In my experience, I was making a pretty comparable salary to my classmates with perm jobs. But travel is still cool from the perspective of getting to try out different settings and work with new people.
      Thanks for checking out the video! And sorry for giving you way more info than you were probably looking for haha

      Hanna True not too much information at all! Yea, I had heard about all the “tax home” hurdles you have to jump through. Thanks for your perspective. Debating going the independent contractor route, seems like a lot of work though. Gonna try living out of a nice converted van to keep living costs as low as possible while traveling. Anyway, best of luck, YNAB and this channel have REALLY changed how I view money now.
