Couple of questions. Would you consider both the S400MKII and the Elysian 4 towers to be on par with each other in terms of sound quality or is one in any way superior in sound quality to the other? Also, can a pair of emotiva's XPA-HC1's bring out the best in Wharfedale's elysian 4 tower speakers? Is that a pairing that you can recommend or would it take a more top of the range amp like the rotel 1592MKII, to achieve the full potential of the elysian 4 towers?

    • @KristiWright

@@yamafanboy I recommend watching the Elysian review for the HC1 question. We have not heard any of the new Buchardt speakers but based on my recollection of the MK1, that answer would a resounding no. Elysian is far better. By a country mile.

@@ryanw8664 When has HiFi ever been for the faint of wallet? One could argue that this is a golden age of HiFi with regard to affordability. When one considers what ~$500 today will buy vs. what it's 1980 equivalent would buy it seems that our entry level gear is unbelievably better than the entry level gear of the day. $500 today is about $135 back in 1980.

I just posted recently on the Emotiva BasX A2 review... I've had the A2s for a week driving my Heco Aurora 700s. Just amazing performance and really opened up the soundstage and improved imaging over my Marantz stereo receiver. Still glad that I went with the A2 over the A1 just because of real estate issues on my equipment stand. Thanks again, to both of you, for the fantastic review.

The R700/A1 pairing sounds really appealing at those relative price points.

Hey Andrew, Iv'e been living with my new HC-1 mono's for over a month and thanks to you I'm a "Mono-convert". I've always had integrated or power amps in my systems but within seconds of listening to the HC-1's the separation, bass and extended detail just flawed me, there was no turning back, Mono's just control each speaker maximising the potential of the speakers. My out going Amp is up for sale, only had it 6 months. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience

Emotiva gave me the opportunity to stop chasing the stereo perfection dream. Dollar to performance ratio is exceptional. I can spend more, I don't have to. If the end result is to just enjoy, Emotiva allows that without breaking the bank and forces you to spend a ton more to get an once more of performance.

I have had the BasX A-150 for two weeks now. Very good little amp. Using it with the concept 300 and hav to say, its controlling them really well. Enough power and neutral sound, not that different from the Technics SGU700 MII I had with them. I Purchased an RZ50 based heavily on ur reviews and recently received the unit after many months of waiting and am very happy with it so far, it’s a giant leap into modern media formats. My question is would you consider these monoblocks a worthy upgraded to the RZ’s front soundstage? Current speakers are some older JBL ES series towers and Center upgrades likely in the future.

My garage system is based on Emotiva BasX TA1 Stereo preamp/tuner amp thing with a Emotiva CD player. I use a pair of Model 81 Human Speakers. Those three components allow me to dwell in Classic rock without listener fatigue or anxiety. (The tuner is very good. As an aside, the preamp/tuner replaced an Outlaw Audio RR2150 receiver. It was a true upgrade.)

Maybe some day you could do a video on the different ways to set up a home theater with different types of equipment.

Regarding the QOTD, my answer is not an amp but the MC1 pre/pro. I’ve said before and I’ll let anyone who will listen know I like my tubes. Whether you go full diy or get your grubby hands on some of the cheap but cheerful valve options for overseas, tube home theater is now within most peoples budget(but maybe not their taste or patience or practicality). I’ve been looking at this sub $1k(by a hair)processor now and it seems to fill a big void for a fairly up to date prepro that’s not hugely expensive. True I could get a receiver with preamp outs but there aren’t many with full pre outs and Atmos/DTS-X. This lil MC-1 is worth a look for me.

Thanks for comparing to the Crown Drivecore II. I'm very happy with my XLS2002 (all models above the 1002 allegedly have less noise or distortion) and have never noticed noise/hiss coming from my JBL4312SE speakers. Plus with the extra power I don't need to turn the gain up entirely. However, Emotiva is close to my home in Nashville and is a good bargain so I am often curious if I would truly notice the switch back to class AB. I think for now I am content.

My old 5-channel amp was dying and the muddiness was taking over. I needed something to hold me over for a while until I could save up for the monoblock setup I eventually want. The BasX A5 was an attractive option that I could eventually repurpose to my stereo office setup if I wanted to. I had no idea just how far gone my old amp was. I was so surprised at the clarity and balance it brought to my 5.1 setup. It has really exposed what surround mixes are great and what are atrocious. (The Orville: New Hoizons is amazingly one of the best current shows with a crystal clear sound stage and attention to dialogue priority) I am not going to really be melting any faces with the A5, but it still does the job at comfortable listening levels and no audible idle hiss with my mix of Elac Uni-Fi 2.0 and Debut 2.0 speakers.

I have a new build in process and I also just picked up the older A500 to back up or replace older Parasound and NAD 5 channel amps. Great value. Given that the 5 channel amp is for the centre and four ceiling channels I know it will work brilliantly. For Two channel listening I am more critical and will use a more music focused Moon amp.
I have owned Emotiva before and see them as neutral and perfect valued products. Not as economical as the first generations of XPA but the BassX lines are a nice upgrade over A/V receiver power.

    Andrew & Kristi,
    Haha! Another fun Review!
SOOO, to answer your VERY TOUGH question about which Emotiva...
For a 2-Channel system, a pair of A1's with Polk R700' sounds like a match made in heaven. Easy.
However, You know I now have the RX50, and with your advice the Polk R700's for left and right (Center likely the Polk R400 for BEST voice clarity) it seems the A1 is a perfect match to the R700's!!!
Now, as my theater design continues... we Previously planned the Emotiva A3 140w driving LCR channels. BUT, If the A1's and 200w (Same distortion?) at 2x cost is best ... what do I match for the Center speaker??? Would the RZ-50's Center channel Amp for the R400's be a good option or so weak I'd be best getting another A1??? OR does such a $1,350 for 3 @ A1's reveal another option at this price point for my Theater LCR's ... like the EMOTIVA XPA-3 Gen3 at $1,399. Oh what a tangled budget I weave!
    My questions fot You:
Will the 200+ watt vice 140w L&R driving my Polk R700 in my 19'x19' theater provide a best value option?
And if so... at this $1360-$1400 cost isn't the XPA-3 now the Best Sounding Option; or do 3 seperate A1 provide best sound at this $1400 Price point. Haha, If I find that extra $$$ somewhere??? Lol
Last question: Do seperate Amps for each speaker provide some kind of audio benefit?
    Cheers,
    Eric

Hey Eric, thank you for your support! If you're going with an RZ50 and Polk speakers across the front, you can totally do a pair of A1s, but I would urge you to side with your original plan and go with the BasX A3. You will be fine sonically and will save going that route.

How would you compare a setup like these monos and a preamp compared to an integrated in roughly the same price range like a Rotel A14? It’s the classic question of separates over and integrated. I prefer the footprint of an integrated, and my speakers aren’t difficult to drive (Paradigm Studio 40 v2’s) but if a setup of these with a nice preamp is around the same price as an integrated like the Rotel A14 or Audiolab 6000a play… Which way would you go?

Your on-screen specs at the beginning of the video list the A1's THD as being 0.1%, 20-20kHz into 4 ohms. Looking on their website, the 0.1% is only rated at 1kHz, not the full spectrum. Full spectrum is probably 1% THD or more, which would be more in line with the rest of the amps in the Basx (and even XPA) lines for 4 ohm loads. Emotiva just doesn't do 4 ohms very well.

"They worked. We're done.". Love it.
In a way that describes the perfect amp, since an is not supposed to alter the sound just amplify so you can drive the speakers of your choice.
Now of course not so simple in real life, which is bad since who doesn't dream of a perfect amp and also good - since if it was so simple we would not have fun hunting for the perfect amp :-)
Personally I am a big fan of having power enough when it comes to speakers, having that just removes a lot of problems with many setups and that is even true of the amps are not perfect. The BasX sure seem to be a candidate to consider, the only real downside is they are mono blocks and not stereo ones that can be bridged ie. put in mono mode as that would give an upgrade path where you could start with just one BasX.
PS. On the question of the day. I'm running a set of Infinity Kappa 90 which are supposedly really difficult impedance wise, so with that the more power is really the better. Only on the other hand watt doesn't tell the whole story and from the specs and review the BasX ought to do just fine.

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  2 роки тому +1

If the A2 could be bridged that would be sweet, but I think given the low per pair price of the A1s, I get why they didn't offer an A2 with ""mono" option.

Not for loud listening levels. I hope that a separate power amp will essentially open up my speakers dynamically and give some extra listening enjoyment. My fear is that i could $1,000 - $3,000 out of pocket and discover no improved listening experience. Do you have any thoughts or experience with using a separate power amp with an integrated amp? Also this could be step one in a move to separates. TY for your time! Very curious here.
