fatmap lists north summit snowfield as 35 degrees max, does that seem accurate to you?
Hard to say. It is significantly less steeper than the lower triples like Rips, Tears, and Summit Direct, but it does have some steep sections. 35 is a good guess I think. They could definitely groom part of the Snowfield 😂
@@skitnb any idea why its a triple black in that case? or why it needs an avalanche probe and a partner to enter?
@@thefrogggy100 probably because the stuff below it is more dangerous, they don't wanna give people the impression that they can ski a double all the way down.
@@thefrogggy100Big Sky's Marketing, triple really shouldn't exist. Seriously though it's the short mandatory no fall zone, the rest looks like no big deal assuming it's safe avy conditions. Nevertheless this would be single black at Alta where everything over blue is just black, black means expert which means it has the potential to be plenty dangerous. Seems simple enough to me. It would be a double at most places: Jackson, Snowbird, Telluride ect.

Wow. Want to really go to Big Sky now. Do have to say this trend of labelling runs as "Triple" black diamonds seems nuts. How long until some mountain decides to give a run four diamonds? Believe that 1 or 2 gets the message across. Maybe a skull and crossbones for the insanely treacherous runs.
The terrain at Big Sky warrants it. Though it may not be cliffs, the runs there are extreme. I think the distinction between double and triple ia that if you fall on a triple, there's a good chance of being killed. My home mountain at Squaw probably only has a few runs truly worthy of a triple black rating. Big Sky is craaaazy.
