    ben's the kind of guy that you would do well to be found with if you were stuck on an alien planet and found a ship capable of escaping that planets atmosphere but you just had to figure out the controls and maybe reconfigure some of the propulsion system

    I vaguely remember my high school lunch stuff using these over some overstock IBM monitors, punching in orders, sometimes inaccurately... Those were... days...

    It probably uses the USB HID "mouse" protocol with _absolute_ coordinates. That has been in the HID spec since day one, which is why Windows would support it out of the box.

      Is that why sometimes after touching on the touch screen on even something as modern as a surface tablet the computer starts acting like there's a mouse wherever you just touched having those hover elements show up on the screen?

      @@bland9876 touching the screen with touch moves your mouse cursor under where you clicked it even if the cursor is invisible.
      Try it next time you get the opportunity.

    That's cool. You could project with a pico projector inversed from behind (with a sheet of tissue paper) and make a little interactive music display or something.

    You can use it to build/support a CNC machine controller (or something else). With a non-functional touchscreen tablet or a laptop screen or you can 'draw' fixed buttons on a panel to fit behind the glass. Benefits: No dirt can go inside (the buttons), especially when you make a case for it. I think this find can be still pretty useful.

    We built a ton of machines that used magic touch touchscreens. We opened up the LCD's and mounted the bare touchscreens inside I still have a drawer full of keytec stuff- floppy discs, glass cleaning clothes. I still use them to clean my glasses.

    He might be more inclined to human pointed lasers because our hands aren't steady. He probably sees it bouncing around a tiny bit and interpret it as a bug. But the motors might hold it too still. Maybe try adding in some noise into the servo position?

    By the way, I believe the reason they had separate drivers for 98 and for ME was because ME added support for Windows Driver Foundation (WDF) drivers. And it is likely for the same reason the device still works in Windows 10 without additional effort.

    Pretty sure this came out in 1999. I say this because the retirement home I taught computers at had one of these on the single computer in their "computer lab." It was always shifted to the side because the tab things weren't stuck down.
    And I just looked them up, and they're STILL AROUND. WHAT.

    Could make it act as a custom keyboard. Print your own keys on paper and put it over it and then map the touch points/areas to keys/macros etc?

    My parents had a touchscreen addon for their old CRT computer. The screen was made of what looked like screen door screen and it had a pen which plugged into the computer. I don't know the exact computer but it kind of looked like a IBM Model 5150.

    Could this be good as an education overlay, like enhancing and old fashion book or atlas if coded for the specific page? Anyway, it wouldn’t be as easy to use as your iPhone.

    I was wondering if the screen controller IC was just a mask programmed PIC or similar that has been remarked, but if I counted correctly it's a 30 pin package which is super uncommon. Seems like an unnecessarily high number of pins for the application.
    Did you check the comms between the touch controller and the USB bridge? Does it enumerate as a HID device?

    Seems like an over engineered solution to bias the screen with AC instead of making the voltage gradients go 1 way. Maybe there's a capacitance between the 2 planes they're trying to dissipate. Resistive has had a 2nd life in grocery stores.

    That is not too bad. It could be an optical break beam array like on old production level Xerox printers. I have actually used those printers and their touch screens.

    It's been way too long since the days when I had a CRT monitor, so I can't remember how (un)common this tech was. But dang this sort of thing would have been super impressive if I seen it back then. Imagine playing something like Starcraft or Heroes of Might & Magic with this?

    It probably works on Windows 10 because it uses a standard USB device class. This is the same reason that very old USB keyboards and mice still work fine.
    I bet you could get it to work on Linux too, and possibly macOS.

    you should be able to directly use the touch screen calibration tool in windows 7 and up to set that up on a 4:3 monitor.

    Can Arduino's Serial Plotter be set to XY mode to simulate the location within the touchscreen's active area? Oooh, oooh, can you put the scope in XY mode and do the same?
    No, wait, mount the touchscreen on the laser rig and see if you can align it like a head's up scope (parralax, I know) to visually see/point to where the laser is...
    Clearly I have no life other than to write useless comments on Ben's videos. Seriously, this was a fun video, Ben. Do more like this!

    I need help. I am trying to build a raspberry pi portable in the from factor of a nintendo Switch, however I don't know what to do about controls. One option is to get a teensy and wire that up. Another option is to just buy a telescopic controller however one, thats no fun and I have a very small budget. Plz help

    Cool pickup (and reverse engineering) - there was a phase in the 90s were touch screen were set to be the next big thing! Then people realised they didnt want smears over their screen lol. Then later we started getting tablets and people weren's so fussed. Why is it that we dont want finger prints on our monitors, but we're OK with them on phones and tablets lol.

    Neat, I keep trying to thing of a use for a touchscreen and inevitably come up with touchscreens as the panultimate purpose. How about a board game overlay, adding digital input for interaction. Or a drawing tablet that moves a physical pen XY and prints as you draw. Unnecessary abstraction meets the silliness quotient.

    Gotta hand it to the patent invention of the touchscreen adapter. It was ahead of its time but if it was made recently, it would be seen as the worst attempt of a cash grab. The oscope capture kind of looks like some type of amplitude shift keying (ASK).

    The driver probably works because it's using the USB HID protocol. The drivers for 98/ME were likely because support wasn't as good back then - it's probably not a specialized driver for that hardware.
