I really would like to see your reaction to the books. Steve Alten uses a tons of "science" talk to tell the story and explain things. He writes in such a way that if you took his word alone, you'd believe it was real science. It is a fascinating read and is definitely the Jurassic Park of the sea
I read the first book, and I found that most of the research was primarily on how sharks actually function on a biological level...but everything else seemed to fall apart. There were several times where I would turn to my wife in total disappointment because even I knew that what was written was absolute bs. But yeah, the shark biology was fascinating.
This is the channel i needed. I can live vicariously through these videos. I grew up as a child wanting to be a "water doctor" which i later learned was a marine biologist/ecologist. This is everything
When it comes to the "pack-hunting Megs", I haven't read all of the books in the Meg series, but from the ones that I have read, if I recall correctly that behavior is present in the books. In the first book, the female Meg displays very typical shark social behavior when it comes to interacting with its own kind: immediately after they are born, Angel (the daughter of the female Meg that I mentioned in my comments on your reaction to the first film, but I don't know if any of the Megs shown in this trailer are meant to be Angel herself) and her siblings are on their own (their mother (spoiler alert) even kills a couple of her babies herself because she feels they're too weak to survive on their own in the wild). But in later books when Angel has children of her own, I believe she actually changes her behavioral patterns. If I recall correctly, Angel is VERY protective of her offspring, and they actually live and hunt as a family group/pack (although one of her sons proves to be kind of a bully towards his siblings and Angel has to get really strict with him at times).
I'm on book four right now and all of angels puppy's are female she had 5 she did have two males before but Scarface gets eaten and she kills the other
Angel's mother ate those two siblings because they hovered around for too long, and she was hungry after having just given birth. Angel herself never displayed any parental instincts towards her kids, and would have eaten them had Jonas and the Tanaka Institute not separated them immediately after birth inside the Tanaka Whale Lagoon. As for the descendants of Angel, aka her kids, Mary Kate and Ashley were social to the point they could tolerate each other, but the real stars of social cooperation and pack hunting were Bela and Lizzy. Bela, being the only offspring not born of parthenogenesis (her lead grey coloration on her back leads credence towards a male great white being her father), was the muscle to Lizzy's brains, and the two would actively coordinate during a hunt to ensure increased chances of success. This was shown in Nightstalkers.
Yes, and I loved the way Bella and Lizzie swam together. Lizzie in the top/lead position and Bella just behind riding her wake. And if I remember correctly, Bella and Lizzie had pups and they were very protective of their pups. And a pair of those pups displayed the same swimming behavior as their parents, except that the grey backed shark was in the lead position instead of the white shark. Also, I’m not sure that a great white was Bela father. Angel was recaptured while mating with her son from her previous litter. Angel killed him because the doors to the tanaka institute were closed behind them and he couldn’t get away from Angel. So most likely Bela is the daughter of that mating.
"Biggest Meg anyone's ever seen" is kind of a misnomer since *nobody* has ever seen a Meg in real life. At least you're enjoying it. I loved the first movie and this one looks hilariously awesome.

In the secong Meg book the sharks in the trench don't have this pack behavior, but their prey, the Kronosaurs do. Meg pack behavior doesn't appear untill book 4 when a captive female has a litter of meg pups and the book explains that they can sense their huge mother nearby and this causes their new behavior.

You didn't say anything about the small dinosaur, can't think of it's name atm, that the guy hits with a shovel in the trailer. So apparently other creatures came thru. Which to me raises questions that creature wasn't aquatic soooo how did it get there? Cuz that was no komodo dragon or monitor lizard I've ever seen before. 😂
Your name reminds me of Salmon Roe no offense I just find it cool since you study about fishes or sharks sorry if I dont know since Im not familiar with your content but will be watching more of it since this is was a great video! Learned a lot!
Most of the scientists think that they know everything and think science has defined everything so far, when they come to conclusions based on theories and hypothesis for their discoveries but most of the things they know about the present and the past still need be validated
I don’t agree about the Meg and dinosaurs not been around at the same time, i believe they were as we can’t really tell how old fossils are, we can get a time frame but not an actual date of how old things are so actually yes the megs and dinosaurs could of been around at the same time, the Meg is a dinosaur tbh
0:24 yes I agree they wouldn't have met and another fact shark's teeth are not for gripping prey, they are for ripping prey so for example the trex would have been ripped into 2 segments and yes they wouldn't have met due to megs went extinct for 23 million years ago and another fact trexes are inaccurate too they took jurassic world Rex's design on it and the meg wouldn't be that large but it's a blockbuster movie so it's fine
secondly for the suits it would be impossible to walk under the marina trench because water pressure even a hard solid metal suit can't withstand that much pressure so yes again it's not accurate but it's a blockbuster movie
I could be wrong but I recall hearing that the stories about kraken are based on sightings of giant squids. Since we are humans the story got more and more exaggerated every time it was told
I’ll be showing this vid to my friend for sure, I’m having problems explaining the logic and stuff to them, lmao. Such a nice vid, if would be very cool if jurassic world does a cross over with the meg.
Its a pretty bad movie. The CGI was decent but some of the things they do are ridiculous. Where did those land dinosaurs come from? At one point Jason swims 50m at 6000m with no suit, no goggles, etc, to open a door. AFAIK he would have passed out within .5 of a second as well as his eyes exploding etc.
Great job, Dr. Munroe. I enjoyed your review of the trailer a lot more than the sequel. I'm reading the third Meg book by Steve Alten and wish the filmmakers would have kept more of the novels in the movies. The Meg 7/10, Meg 2: The Trench 4/10 :(

Trust me don't even waste your time with this film. Go read the novels. The first one is amazing the second one is even better the third one is my favorite but it's not as good as the first two. The fourth one is okay the fifth one is starting to get pretty bad in the 6th one is horrible. Definitely a lot of scientific bullshit that you would see through but the books are way better. The audiobook is fantastic and it's free on UA-cam in small parts. And the trench audiobook is amazing. Absolutely wonderful. The guy does every accent and every voice. You can get audible for like $15 a month and cancel anytime and each month to get a free books so you could listen to the meg for free on UA-cam and then the second one the trench or 15 bucks. But you will then see what the potential should have been for this movie and how Jason Statham was the absolute worst person to play Jonas Taylor. And how they absolutely decimated an amazing story and butchered it onscreen and embarrassed the author. It should have been a miniseries with a good budget

When I first saw the trailer I literally died when they showed a Megalodon killing a T-Rex. All creatures in that scene weren't even around at that time (65 million years). T-Rex went extinct 66 million years ago in the Cretaceous Period while Megalodon was around 20 million years ago in the Miocene Period. also off topic but why was Petrolacosaurus, a lizard from the Carboniferous Period, at the same time Period as T-Rex. Really inaccurate

I actually made a UA-cam video about T-Rex versus Megalodon. I discussed who would win and the different advantages and disadvantages of the two. I also included 2 scenarios. I where the T-Rex is alone, and another where the T-Rex is in a pack which is something that T-Rex is scientifically proven to have done.
I’m not marine biologist or an expert in ocean/aquatic animals, but what I do know is that the red megladon hunt in packs, maybe it’s that particular species? However there nowhere near 58 feet, I think those are 40-48 feet according to what I read on study of megladon. Very interesting
You can also see the same scar from that meg's mouth that it received from the t rex but the claws are no longer on it its large chunk of its lip is just gone ripped off
@@Myuutsuu85 it is she literally got clawed on the mouth by that t rex and the modern version of her her scar went from a claw scratch to a ripped off lip chunk plus she got clawed in the same spot where her lip used to be
I hate these inaccurate movies. Reality doesn't need to be dressed up to be scary. You have no idea how terrifying a 58ft long shark would be, 100ft plus just stretches the imagination too far. What would it even survive on? assuming they were 100ft plus the whale population would be toast

When THE MEG was announced back in '18, the AV Club made a Photoshop image of Jason Statham and a Great White Shark skulking around each other with pistols. It remains my favorite image of this film series even though it's completely fake.
Look, the books decided that air-breathing sea reptiles (like liopleurodon) could re-evolve gills (something that’s never happend when reptiles, mammals, and biirds have gone back to the sea!), and that aforementioned liopleurodons can grow to 120 feet(!) so, uh, this not abook/movie series that even pretends to care about science. I appreciate the effort, though. (And the first book’s climax way more ridiculously awesome than the movie’s. I do not know why they changed it, it’s not like they had a sudden attack of plausibility anywhere else.)
A Meg in the time of Dinos. More importantly, in the time of gigantic marine predator reptiles that ate sharks. The insane Mosasaurus from JP and this Meg... Two oversized ridiculous impossible marine predators chomp at each other. I'd watch that film if it wasn't a SciFi channel production. Why not add an entire school of Dunkleosteus to just spice things up as well. Probably a terrible movie, but, I'd probably watch it.

I love how informative this is!
thanks so much :)
@Dr Sam Munroe you're welcome :) look forward to more of your videos
Isn't there a creature that lived with megalodon that can actually KILL one? Like a HUGE whale?
Megalodon estimated real size: 15-18 meters long.
Megalodon in movies: The size of the Empire State Building
As a fan of Steve Alten's Meg series of novels and i absolutely love sharks i am so excited for this!
Ain't no way he stopped it with his legs lmao, I know it's just fiction but it's really funny, I love shark movies.
Your name reminds me of Salmon Roe no offense I just find it cool since you study about fishes or sharks sorry if I dont know since Im not familiar with your content but will be watching more of it since this is was a great video! Learned a lot!
The is Something i think and that is that the megalodon Maybe hunted in packs Because its dead we will properly never find out
1:02. Why do you have to be a buzz kill. Not everything has to be accurate. Just enjoy the entertainment.
How can you be with a monster, apex predator a killer machine and in it's own environment and still survive?
I thought she said "Salmon Roe": perfect name for someone who studies sharks, and I assume other fish.
Most of the scientists think that they know everything and think science has defined everything so far, when they come to conclusions based on theories and hypothesis for their discoveries but most of the things they know about the present and the past still need be validated
I don’t agree about the Meg and dinosaurs not been around at the same time, i believe they were as we can’t really tell how old fossils are, we can get a time frame but not an actual date of how old things are so actually yes the megs and dinosaurs could of been around at the same time, the Meg is a dinosaur tbh
please watch the shallows!! it's one of the best shark movies in my opinion and it has blake lively !!
Jason have plot armor. Meg would of toasted him in the first 2 mins. Lmao
0:24 yes I agree they wouldn't have met and another fact shark's teeth are not for gripping prey, they are for ripping prey so for example the trex would have been ripped into 2 segments and yes they wouldn't have met due to megs went extinct for 23 million years ago and another fact trexes are inaccurate too they took jurassic world Rex's design on it and the meg wouldn't be that large but it's a blockbuster movie so it's fine
secondly for the suits it would be impossible to walk under the marina trench because water pressure even a hard solid metal suit can't withstand that much pressure so yes again it's not accurate but it's a blockbuster movie
another fact is that megs don't hunt in packs which you mentioned they are apex predators that are solitary animals meaning they hunt solo
finally I want to mention sharks don't eat humans they confuse you as other prey like seals or other organism they eat but sharks don't eat humans
thanks for explaining and taking your time to break down things in this video appreciate it keep up the work and spread cool info around the world
There is no real science in this movie whatsoever, but that doesn’t make it not fun to watch.
Thanks for the video! I really want a breakdown on the Kraken though, I wonder about their biology and if they really existed, how they would survive
I could be wrong but I recall hearing that the stories about kraken are based on sightings of giant squids. Since we are humans the story got more and more exaggerated every time it was told
Now we just need you to watch the movie then make another video of how much you enjoyed the movie! ❤
The Meg 7/10, Meg 2: The Trench 4/10 :(
Thank you so much! I am glad you liked it :)
I’m a environmental science major and I love a cheesy science fiction movie. It can get so funny.
Love the enthusiasm even when acknowledging the goofiness of the premise. Looking forward to this movie
Me too! Thanks for watching :)
Forgive me if this has already been pointed out to you, but did you ever notice that your name Sam Munroe sounds like SALMON ROE? And you study animals etc. How about that
I have indeed :). Tt's actually my twitter (X) handle haha.
I didn’t know I needed a shark channel that’s science based, I already watch science based UA-camrs like Roanoke Gaming, but.. I LOVE THIS JUST AS MUCH!!!❤❤❤
Thanks so much!
@Dr Sam Munroe no problem! I love the science!! 💖
Dr Munroe really like your reviews on Jaws and The Meg. If you take requests. Could please do a review on the movie The Shallows. Keep up the good reviews.
Thanks very much! I will add it to the list :)
I can't wait! Jason Statham and megs, I'm there!!
Turns out, the movie is complete garbage
Just watched your Meg reaction and was wondering if you reacted to Meg 2 trailer. Glad you have.
HUNGRY SHARK in the Movie!!
I better see the leviathan as the hero in THE MEG 3 movie
My goodness you are so delightful, I did see the Meg on streaming and didn't have any plans to see the sequel until I watched this review of the trailer.
For heavens sake, now I'm pumped to see this in the theater! Well done.
Thanks so much! When it comes out on streaming, I will be reviewing the whole movie. Very excited too!
@@drsammunroe thank you so much for your videos! So insightful. Yeah they've gotten to be a little delirious with the size of the meg I think the one in this movie was a whopping 120 feet. So ridiculous size but thankfully with your breakdowns viewers can hear it from an expert that these proportions are absolutely ridiculous. Still a good movie? eh ⚖I'm kinda more into realism myself so all depending on your tastes I'd say is enjoyable at best but the idea of a 120 foot megalodon still roaming around earth's oceans?! goh. 🤨
0:55 Indominus rex laughing in the corner.
now that the movie releaseed pls react to it because I love learning about this type of stuff.
p.s this channel does an amazing job at explaining animals in general
Thanks so much! I will def review the meg 2 once it is out on a streaming service!
Orcas hunt in packs and are apex predators.
DeFINately subbing. 😛 Absolutely love sharks. Became obsessed with them ever since I saw JAWS as a kid so many years ago. Really enjoyed your breakdowns so far. Hoping we get a reaction the "The Shallows". Any shot? "Shark Nights 3D" is also a fun popcorn shark movie with multiple species of sharks so it could be a fun breakdown vid. 🙂 Looking forward to more vids.
Awesome video!❤ i loved ur scientific breakdowns of this trailer 😊 i myself have always loved the Apex predator Randy orton 😂.. just jk but yea Megalodon is definitely my fav shark of all time and im very hyped to see this!
Thank you for providing your expertise, your clarification of historical and scientific data is greatly appreciated. I also can't wait to see Meg 2. The Meg 2 will be released on Friday, August 4, 2023. Looks like a lot of fun.👍👍
Thank you!
Now they need to make a movie about the titanaboa
Can a megalodon get this big anyways
DR you kick ass I loved your review and great energy and yes yes i also can't wait to see this movie !!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love all animals living or extinct
im waiting for the movie cuz i love megalodons
It’s a freakin Hollywood fun movie with really good CGI and I’m all for it and exited for it
you're my new favorite reactor. would love to see you watch deep blue sea and shark night! 😂
Both great suggestions :) Probably the next one will be deep blue sea, at least before Meg 2 comes out, thanks so much for the nice comment!
@@drsammunroe Of course! Your reaction actually got me excited for Meg 2! 🦈
No no you’re wrong in the movie they brought dinosaurs back btw
How would you know? It hasn't even come out yet
Limits of credullity & movie magic aside would a shark living at 25,000 feet below surface be able to withstand the ascension to the surface? 🤷♂️😂
Growing up my dream job was to be a zoologist- even though I’m in the social work field, that fire still burns for animal knowledge.
I love the “expert reacts” videos I’ve been seeing too- so when I saw these, especially because they’re Meg/marine biology/Shark related, I was pumped! 🤣
Glad you liked it :) thanks for watching
Interestingly, the "hunting in groups but not in 'packs'" is also one hypothesis for some theropod behaviors.
Who would win
A pack of hungry meg sharks who are ready to kill
One man on a jet ski with a stick
Jason Statham*
@@Shane_chia * man with stick *
Hi Dr. Sam, I'm definitely gonna watch this movie when it comes out on August 4th, I've seen the first one, that was good, this one looks better than the first one!! 😀 😀
The shark in Jaws is a tuna fish compared to this one!! 😀 😀 🦈🦈🦈
The music is Barracuda by US rock band Heart 😀😀🤘🎸🎸🎸🦈🦈🦈
Big Hi from Scotland 😀 😀
no actually the shark in jaws is a great white. btw tuna isn't a shark
By the way the dinosaurs went extinct closer to 66 million years ago
thanks!
You can also see the same scar from that meg's mouth that it received from the t rex but the claws are no longer on it its large chunk of its lip is just gone ripped off
Nah, there is no way that the shark from the beginning of the trailer is the same as Scarface from the later scenes.
@@Myuutsuu85 it is she literally got clawed on the mouth by that t rex and the modern version of her her scar went from a claw scratch to a ripped off lip chunk plus she got clawed in the same spot where her lip used to be
.
I hate these inaccurate movies. Reality doesn't need to be dressed up to be scary. You have no idea how terrifying a 58ft long shark would be, 100ft plus just stretches the imagination too far. What would it even survive on? assuming they were 100ft plus the whale population would be toast
There are quite a few movies you could try out.
Deep Blue Sea
The Reef
47 Meters Down
47 Meters Down Uncaged
Open Water
The wildly idiotic Open Water 2: Adrift
Open Water 3: Cage Dive
The Cave
The Descent
Piranha
Crawl
Anaconda
Lake Pacid
The Ruins?? (Don't know if this would be up your alley..?)
Cujo
Most of the options above deal with sharks but a few arent.
Hope this helps!
Just discovered your channel and I really love these reaction videos. It's so much more entertaining and insightful than the usual people screaming at a screen. I hope you react to way more shark movies, there's just so many! I genuinely felt like I've learnt something watching your videos. Love your energy!
Awesome thank you! I plan to do more reactions videos as soon as I can!
I really like singer/actor Trace Adkins. He has a shark movie called MANEATER. Maybe consider evaluating it soon.
Doctor..Because scientist or astrological only know 5/ sea ⛵🌊 We don't know 95 sea mestry 🦈.. 🐊
(Watching this trainwreck)....02:30.....How do those suits contain only a 1 atmo when child's toy ballons contain at least 3 times that??? But those suits are "State of the Art" and you're still deriding them...????
I just got back from seeing the movie. I'd rate it about 3.5% scientifically accurate, 100% fun. And how come no one mentions how that megalodon could totally NOT come out of nowhere in that shallow beach to snatch that T Rex?
