- Please join us for the fourth episode of Technical Difficulties, a planned monthly live interview/chat with other techs and amp designers.
Today's guest is Ted Woodford, a master craftsman whose work and attitude I deeply admire.
If you don't already know his channel, you're in for a real treat:
/ @twoodfrd
The first hour will be interview and story time, and in the second hour we'll take viewer questions. - Розваги
polishing, polishing, polishing
penetration is paramount.
You know we all say that in our heads now when doing fret polish
Need a t-shirt with that on it.
Indeed!
You mean “Polishing, polishing… polishing.”😊
This is one of the better Ted Talks I've heard in recent history.
One thing I notice in Ted’s playing demonstrations is he often plays a little style that fits the style and period of the instrument he’s playing.
I'm amazed how he manages to play decently on a guitar he's just done a left-handed conversion on! Or some crazy open tuning that owner prefers.
Thank you for this. Ted Woodford is possibly my favorite UA-cam creator, and I appreciate that you're exposing him to a new audience. He's like a favorite uncle that I've never actually met.
Few people who watch Ted's videos understand the almost insane amount of skill required to do it. As someone who has tried, and mostly failed to do some of the more simple things, I feel that I have a unique appreciation for that skill. Ted is a rare individual, indeed.
I think anyone would have to build, and repair a guitar to appreciate it. Even then, he always finds non conventional ways of getting things done. Something about the way his mind works, and his diligence.
Woody played marching band cello in "Take the Money and Run."
a two hour chat with Ted Woodford? yes, please, and thank you.
Ted, I watch your videos because you are not only good at what you do, you are an awesome communicator as well. I have never left one of your videos without learning valuable tips. Thank you , I hope you see this post, I greatly admire your skill and knowledge
I'm not a Luther but I'm a carpenter that plays guitar and I find Ted's videos, so relaxing in the way his content is reminds me of the good old days of UA-cam. Basic and straight to the point no-frills and I love that. There has been a few things throughout the years of watching him that he does with guitars that I have used in cabinet making that have worked brilliantly, and I am so grateful that I stumbled upon his channel.
This was a rare treat. Thanks a bunch for setting this up, Lyle, and Ted I appreciate your time and what you do (your videos are like weekly church for my household).
Hope y'all can do another!
Been watching Ted Woodford for almost 1 1/2 years now and I am in awe of how he can make magic with his wood working skills. The guy is 1 of the greatest I ever seen on UA-cam. Intelligent and skillful. Nice to see both of you together here . It's incredible to have 2 masters on here at the same time . Sorry I missed the live airing of it . Both of you have the voices that makes me relaxed to enjoy the video. You both have a calm, serene flow in your work and what is being done with an education instruction.
I really like and admire Ted. He is a true craftsman and has a subtle and perverse mind.
He does amazing work on guitars, incredible to watch the stuff he does. I've clicked on thinking I'll just watch a bit of this and end up watching all the way through because it's fascinating seeing how how manages to do some of this stuff. True craftsman.
Wish I could have been there for the live show. Still, it's very informative and entertaining to watch. I respect both of these guys and I value the knowledge they are passing forward. Folks like these are a rare breed in the world today. Younger folks would be wise to pay attention and take notes.
My two favorite “gear” youtube guys in one plays. Thanks Lyle and Ted! Top tier content from both of you!
"Everythong effects tone".... yup, pretty much most things do at least subtly. Just subscribed to Teds channel.
Crossover event of 2023. Thanks guys.
So lucky to have Ted as a luthier. He’s so bloody intelligent!
Ted is a far better player than he lets on. Generally he’s just making sounds to show the repair is complete. But if you’re paying attention, you know that he plays many styles and uses varied techniques as he sees fit for an individual instrument. He’s a player.
Cool. Two of the best meeting, and sharing with us. And yes, your voices are very mellow!
Ted is one of my newest heros, such an exemplary craftsman and seems like a real decent fellow as well.
Awesome to see Ted on a different channel. I've never been here before, but I will be back. Cheers
Knowledge is king. Thank you ted. Keep up the great work.
twoodword and psionic audio in the same video! My week has been made
These are the two UA-cam guitar/ amp guys I have gravitated to due to their intelligence, skillsets, and talent for articulating the information in an interesting and entertaining fashion. This video was a real treat and a bona fide “twofer!” Thank you both!
This was *awesome* ! enjoyed it more than say a conversation with Dave Friedman or another amp tech/builder. Two slightly different yet dovetailing skill sets coming together, for a relaxed yet illuminating chat. Please do this again! 👍👏👏
Aloha from Snowden N Buckingham . Fabulous Vidz mou Drugyz. No geetar or amp Tek n a hundred miles . My 70 yearold brain needs Tha Info .. Live 4 Ever Compadres
27:28 so true, nailed Ted's energy.
Very informative and entertaining. Thank you!
Ted is perhaps my favorite UA-cam personality for the main reason that he educates me as to what makes guitars sound great and how they are put together. While I live in the USA and unlikely to ever meet Ted, I just want him to know how much I appreciate the information he shares.
thanks for sharing your time with us guys, enjoyable chat.
You are both tied for my favorite channel. Thanks for all you do. Haters gonna hate
Another dual subscriber here. This is an unexpected and delightful surprise.
So..thank you! That's all.
This is great. Love both of these channels!
Thank you to both of you for all the work that you do to get the videos together and on UA-cam. I've noticed a lot of people make less than thoughtful comments to people that are making great content. I know there are hours and hours of unseen work and there is expensive equipment not directly related to your main focus. Cameras, mics, editing software, high speed internet for uploads....
I'm glad you brought up the J taper pots on vintage Fender amps. I wouldn't have noticed that the kit I'm building came with audio taper pots on the volume and treble. Thanks Lyle!
I did repair and build . Ted sets the bar high.
so essentially theres no need to comment on Teds videos. so i'll just keep watching.
Incredible ! The 2 guys that I religiously watch....every video ! Thank you guys for what you do !!!
Great choice in guests , we watch his channel on the regular.
Ted’s videos and craftsmanship are off the charts.
Ted’s the man!
Worlds collide! Two of my favorite people! Thank you!
Great stuff guys!
Thanks very much!
Thanks - this was enjoyable!
These interviews really need to find their place in a streaming service. Great conversations!
Thanks for this Lyle, Ted’s channel is up there with yours for my favorites. Happy Christmas and Merry New Year to you and yours.
I’m jealous Ted can’t work on my guitars. And hopefully Lyle won’t turn me down when I ask if I can ship my Super reverb chassis to him all the way from Spokane.
love his channel
Two priceless individuals of the human race…
Two of the best channels on UA-cam!
Thank you gentlemen.
Thanks Lyle and Ted for your time and great content! 😎👍
As an amatuer guitarist, I apprecieate watching your videos and sometimes I get a "that is how to fix that problem". Thank you to both of you.
Two of my top 3 guitar and amp guys!!! Add Uncle Doug to the mix and I could die happy. Love your work and knowledge. Thank you so very much!
This was amazing!
It’s my favourite zen channel 😊
Great conversation.
Absolutely riveting chat from start to finish ... Yoda meets king Solomon . Lashings of wisdom . Thank you both .
Finally got around to watching this, as I was on the road at the time of filming... Thanks for this Lyle, and Ted! super interesting and informative!
Love you both
Thanks. I really enjoyed this stream. My two favorite content creators.
Ted I’m proud of you and your expert work and your work is amazing 😻!!! Ted you make peoples dreams come true and you deserve a raise. Heavenly Father please bless Ted and give Ted more prosperity and the desires of his heart in Jesus Christ of Nazareths name Amen thanks Jesus !
ted is an insanely talented guy. i've been enjoying his videos from the start.
Absolutely wonderful two hours ! Thanks very much. Two hours which just flew by !! Ted's a master craftman with the skills, humility and humour which make his channel so compelling. My weekend is always completed by watching his latest offering. The weekend is not complete without it.😀
I just want to thank you both for your contributions to your respective crafts! As a guitar AND amp tech, I can say that I have gleaned much knowledge from both of you. I would not be where I am without you! Nice to have these resources in Canada!
Ted is amazing …
Fabulous video.
I look forward to Ted’s videos every week…the ‘Bob Ross’ of guitar repair. A great talent. Good interview btw too!
Ted is the best!
This was great. I love watching (and listening to) Ted. I don't know Psionic Audio, but now I will check it out.
These two guys are artisans and perfectionists at what they do and I very much enjoy watching and listening to them. Very humble, and very humbling to watch, knowing full well that I could never approach the ball park they are in myself (though I would love to). Thank you guys, your work is appreciated.
You both are educating in a way that is old-world, which is priceless; and you are exemplifying how to implement new tech to tackle the craft.
We are all better for learning from your example of transparency as craftsmen.
I just live vicariously through both of your channels LOL I work on my own stuff because I enjoy doing it but I don't really want to get into the business. For what it is I do enjoy both of your channels.
I have a Suhr Hombre and a Friedman mini amp thanks to your videos with those amps, and I sold several things to afford a Huss & Dalton 00 sized acoustic after seeing them in Ted's content a couple times. Great amps and a beautifully made acoustic. My "one nice acoustic".
I can watch hours and hours of Ted's videos.
Ted and Uncle Doug are 2 of my YT favorites.
Great chat and nice to see you two finding community. Don’t look at the comments. Do what you’re going to do and trust your intuition. Any attention given is just watering down the end product.
Quite apart from those of us interested in the guitar, that was such a useful discussion on dealing with unfiltered social media generally. Full of good sense- thank you both.👍
For fretboard hydration I use mineral oil from the drugstore, the same type used for laxative purposes. It’s very pure, clean, and cheap with zero odour. A dry fretboard will drink it up and any excess can be absorbed with a paper towel or cotton cloth. It also helps to lift off any finger garbage left behind.
Well hey there gang!
After watching Ted's channel for quite a while, I've gotten to the point where I get very pleased with myself if I can can either see a problem (or a solution) before Ted says what it is. When I get it right, it makes me happy! He has a great channel, and I've learned quite a lot. But no, I'd still never do a neck reset on my Martin myself! lol
Best crossover, i sub to both channels! Best of both sides of the guitar coin!
Pls. let me troll this comment section for a bit :) Mr. Ted is my main inspiration for crafting around on guitars since a couple of years. so much that I even purchased and tore up a cheap acoustic and crossbraced it. Lyle, you are also a hardcore inspiration. Thanks to both of you, and please keep doing what you do, it is greatly appreciated
Your and Ted's Channels are my most favorite channels here and it's great two hear you two exchange each other
I really enjoy Ted’s work and it was a real treat to meet him on this. Time flew by. I hope to have him on again. Thank you from the both of us.
Love Ted, waiting on him to finish up that Junior!
I love both of you guys! Psionic Audio reminds me of my early youth 5 years of electrical engineering in high school and college. Ted lives half an hour from my Uncle Bobby in St. Catherines, OT. I have learned so much about servicing my guitars and amps from both of you chaps. The content on both of your channels is such a valuable service for us all. Thank you both for that.
As an aside, as a professionally working musician, I find that both of your guitar-playing skills are higher than most repair dudes in the industry. Ignore the idiot haters who cannot find a gig to save their lives. Harrumph.
You guys rock! Wish you both more nice people on you chanels! :D
My two favorite content creators, together! Damn, wish I'd found this in time to watch it live. At the risk of overloading you with flattery (I know how you guys hate that!) I just want to say that I really enjoyed this. Enough said.
Oh, one more thing...Lyle, feel free to open a video with a Werner Herzog impression. I had to watch Ted's several times, I was laughing too hard to catch all the nuances on the first pass!
Love his impressions : Swedish Chef , Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Back when I was a full time cabinetmaker (30 yrs ago), I had the chance to work on a 200+ yr old Empire style table card table. The wooden finger hinge required repairing. I totally chickened out of working on the table and refused. Today, I might, but in hindsight, I made the right decision. FWIW, (holds up hands), I still got ten fingers.
Holy crap! I've been waiting for this months episode of Technical difficulties cause you'd said I would like it after I mentioned how much I loved and respected your channel as well as the Teds channel. And I've been so busy I haven't had time to come watch it but I searched it just now and who do I see? TED! Lyle I can't begin to tell you what a wonderful x mas surprise this was for me lol! I wanted to ask if you were alluding to Ted being featured but that sounded too good to be true so I didn't dare get my hopes up lol. I said it then and I stand by it now, you Lyle as well as Ted are outstanding teachers, techs and entertainers and your channels are the best UA-cam has to offer! Happy holidays and as always enjoy "polishing, polishing, polishing" and keep that "soLdering sodering" iron hot!
good thing this one!
I'm inspired by quality guitar repairs
Hi Lyle.
I enjoy watching your videos and I have become a lot more knowledgeable through your in depth explanations.
I love the way you don't bs about what's good and what's not.
Now, I have a question!
I recently purchased a 1964 HW Fender Deluxe Reverb, the re issue, and I'm curious to know if there are any issues that I should be aware of, if you know of any?
I bought the amp from a reputable dealer here in the UK and I'm delighted with it.
Obviously, if there is something that I need to look out for to maintain its longevity.
Thanks for the brilliant videos and wait in anticipation for any info you may have.
Kindest regards, Andy
You to are great teachers, so learning to deal with Fender's Hot Rod Deluxe Mod 3 Limited Edition with heat problems that I built cabinets with 2 AC fans and watch for heating. So far, it's holding fine so far? Thanks for your in direct help.
Really enjoy Teds wry sense of humor, especially if someone has abused a guitar or made a 'creative' repair
I'll subscribe. If Ted approves of your channel, I'll give it a shot.
I didn't even know he was on this podcast. If he mentioned it, I completely missed it - and I watch all of his videos. I'm sure he mentioned it and I didn't care at the moment.
Why does this feel the same as when you were young and you saw your teacher outside of school?
I love Lyle, Brad and Ted. These three are my go-to guitar related artisans on YT. Ted is probably the most humble person on YT which garners his gentle viewers. Lyle has a planet brain and Brad is a bloody legend with both qualities.
Ted and Lyle are masters of their crafts, no doubt. What impresses me about Brad, is how he can fix a cheap solid state amp one day and reset the neck on a Martin (using his espresso machine for steam!!) the next...like some kind of repair savant! All three are impressive, capable people.
Sorry about the noise. I'm still learning with your advice, I like your advice. 22:33
