Disneyland's Lost Riverboat FOUND!

- Long gone from the Rivers of America at Disneyland, Davy Crockett's Bertha Mae Keelboat still exists in Southern California, Savvy Collectors and Clever Sleuths have kept an eye on it over the years, but to most fans of the park, it simply disappeared never to be seen again.
Now more than 23 years after its disappearance from the original Disneyland park, and more than two years after it was last seen in an auction catalog, the generous owner, and the company he's loaned items to to help provide inspiration to young kids (via educational programs) is allowing us not just to see, but to climb aboard a LOST Disneyland Riverboat!
First though, just sit right back and travel to the past as we see rare footage and photos of the Keelboats and dive in to their Disneyland (and Davy Crocket and the River Pirates) History!

Justin I can't express my thanks and appreciation enough for showing us some actual vintage Disneyland. Don't ever stop.
I am 62 and remember riding these every time I went to Disneyland. In elementary school I did a report on the keel boats and made a small model of the Bertha Mae. Also Chicken of the Sea was a must eat at always lol. This was such fun to watch! Thank you for sharing.
I love watching you love things. Awesome, touching and hilarious. The Disneyland sign shop painters are definitely top notch. But, fun fact, the prop shop has several "ropers" on staff and they weave and maintain those ropes that were used for guest control on that boat and throughout the park!

I never had the chance to ride the keelboats at Disneyland, but I did at Magic Kingdom. We were on that park's Bertha Mae once, on the top level, and the boat leaned so far to the side we were sure we were going overboard! I have so many fond memories of that attraction. Thanks for this wonderful reminder!

My brother’s first Disneyland job was on the Chicken of the Sea Pirate ship before Uncle Walt suggested he try out for his long term job as a Jungle Cruise skipper in the early 1960’s. Thank you for the memories!
As an early Disney-er, I saw the keel boats docked there for many years without ever taking a ride. For one thing, it was nearly always closed. When one day, I saw the keel boats running (it may have been that final year) I went on the ride. I remember thinking - this is a lot funner than I thought it would be! There was a running commentary from Davy Crockett as I recall and the driver told jokes like the Jungle Cruise, but not so many and the jokes weren't so bad. Plus, Davy was talking most of the time. Nice to see the boat again! Oh, and hi from San Bernardino. Come back any time!
Legit screamed "ew" when you tasted the rope 😂
That's not a starter. That's where the kill cord went. It had a cap with a cord that you attached to your belt loop. If you fell off the boat while driving, the boat would stop. I should know, I drove them at Walt Disney World. It wasn't easy, you had the microphone in one hand, the throttle in the other and the keel handle under your arm. Even though they were not easy to drive, we loved driving them. Trying to watch both sides of the boat, while spieling, navigating the river with the other boats and watching the guests was difficult but fun. I really enjoyed your video and you brought back many memories! Thanks for the video! Keelboat Greg.
I LOOOVE seeing the historical Disneyland stuff. I’m an east coaster and have only been to Disneyland once, for one day (not even a full one) because I was in the high school band and we marched in the magic kingdom. It was a whirlwind but it was magical. Hopefully someday I will get to return! Until then, keep making the magic Justin! 😄😄

I have a beautiful picture of the Bertha Mae from 1968 that is close-up and almost frameable.
You will find it if you look through your mail (Late 2016) and find the picture CD (yep, CD). You can tell by the brown hull that it is original wood. Great video and quite a privilege.
Awesome Video! Way before my time to witness in person but it must have been pretty cool to take a deep look into some neat Disney history. Also noticed some cool retired props in the background. Shhhhh. Reminds me of the LFDP days. Big fan man, keep it up.

I think that rope with the round thing on one end was the kill button connection for the operator it was clipped to their vest and if they fell off the boat it would kill the motor. What a great find and how nice of them to let you film it all for us. Thanks nice work.
I'm old enough to have seen the "R.C. planes" at Disneyland. You may not know that before the radio controlled models, they were tethered. Those are what were displayed and sold there. The planes had two strings from a handle you held attached to the plane that controlled the tail flaps to go up or down while the pilot (the guy flying the plane) stood turning in circles til the thing ran out of gas. The cars were tethered to a spike and just ran in circles until they ran out of gas. Thanks for all the good work.
Great video! I met Garner Holt at the Haunted Mansion swinging wake. Really nice guy! I’m excited to see this display when it is ready.
I attended the Van Eaton pop up Gallery and auction. It was AMAZING to see all the Disney memorabilia. The sea serpent, Davey Crocket explorer canoe. Wow!
The Mike Fink keel boats were a family favorite. We always sat in the cabin and if we were lucky got the window seat. The keel boats offered an up close and personal feel experience on the river as they were low on the water. (The canoes did too but you had to paddle and couldn’t enjoy the view as well) The keel boats were our favorite “C” ticket ride. I miss them as well as the chicken of the sea pirate Jolly Roger restaurant. Why oh why did they have to take it out??? They could have at least left Skull Rock. At least the door survived 😂

While this is awesome, I’m extremely curios to know why there is an old Cedar Point locomotive at Garner Holt.

It was great to see you doing something not only your fans enjoyed but, that you really enjoyed. We need something like that during this not so great year. I'm still waiting for my lotus 1974 car to come in. I would go nuts for a ride in that car. Everyone has his or her dreams. I'd love to stroll around the place and see what else they have.
Really enjoyed your video with the history of the Bertha Mae. I know Garner and have been at his production facilities, both the original one and the new, larger one in Redlands. He is a fantastic individual whose commitment to education is mind blowing. I too was in awe at seeing the Bertha Mae up close as well as all of the other original Disneyland ride vehicles, many of which were designed by Bob Gurr, (who I’ve also met). Great fun!

When I was young (in the 60's) they had two rides in Frontierland that are now long gone. Although I was bummed when they removed the Pack Mules and Mine Train rides, I have to admit that Thunder Mountain, which was built on top of them, is a pretty good trade-off. Thanks for the memories!

Love the adventure of you videos. I was fortunate enough ride the Huck fin keel boats and saw the Indian village in the early days. We sure miss the creative times at Disneyland. Haven’t seen one since 1973, and it’s exactly as I remember. My sister and I wanted to ride on top but Dad didn’t like the way it looked. Lol. I remember it feeling kinda tippy. Thank you for this!

This is so cool! It makes me so happy to know that this still exists and is being restored for kids to visit it. Sadly, a ride like this would never be allowed today, both with the safety/liability issues, and also the ADA access issues. Thank you Justin for sharing this incredible experience with us!! Hello Sir. Thank you for such a great video! It made me go back and re live those wonderful times back in the 70's as a kid in Disneyland. Although i never got to ride these river boats, I did get to see them while travelli g on the Mark Twain and the America.

My favorite place on the Keel Boats was sitting in the very front on that little tiny seat. My family always sat on top or inside, I always ran for the front seat. Memories.

Yes that is an XLR jack for a mic. The Keel Boats were sort of the Frontierland version of Jungle Cruise at one time with wise-cracking skippers narrating the ride around the river.

The Mike Fink boats tipping over and guest having to swim to shore just gives me the Willie's. I have a weird phobia if I had to swim in the Rivers of America and my foot hitting the track to the Mark Twain-Columbia would scare the you know what our of me.
When I was younger I always wanted to go to Disneyland and I still haven’t gone but you’re doing it for me and I love the history because that’s the time I would’ve went when it’s all fresh and new

Seeing the boat brings back childhood memories. I also was in heaven seeing the old Matterhorn bobsleds, Space Mountain trains, & other Disneyland ride vehicles. The only vehicle I was really hoping to see was a Peoplemover train. Peoplemover was one of my favorite attractions that eventually needs to return to Disneyland.

I was wondering if that other garbage can looking thing on the main deck might have been like a bin to collect the tickets that were required for entry into the attractions of DIsneyLand and DIsney World at that time. 2 things: 1) at 6:11... is that the Thunder Road from Joe Dante's 'Explorers' behind you at frame right? 2) Many years ago I began a 3d virtual reconstruction of the Bertha Mae. I sort of got distracted and the project stalled (partially for lack of detailed reference material); happy to say that, as of today, that project is back on active status. Thank you for the inspiration, sir. And for the treasure trove of reference!

I remember seeing the keel boats in operation, and I may have had a chance to ride them. After a while, they always seemed to be closed when I visited.
I did not get to ride the Bertha May on my one trip to Disneyland [I did see it] but my wife and I sailed on the Disney World version years ago and loved it. This may be my favorite of your videos. Great to see this old boat survived. I think there may be one of the Disney World ones as a prop you can see on the Riverboat ride in Florida. I mean I think it's one of the old Mike Fin boats that I saw there.

23:45 Based on my experience working at movie theaters, this side box with a slot "may" be a ticket box, where the cast member would drop paper tickets into the slot (and the lock would mean only management could access it). In the earliest days of Disneyland, up to the 70's I believe, Disneyland still used an individual paper ticket system for each ride. The tickets were probably inserted all day/night long and probably weren't collected until closing. Mind you, this is only a guess based on design.

It's not just nostalgia. The past was much richer, deeper, and fuller than any modern facsimile. We seek what we lost and that's what makes it so valuable. We try to recapture it but it is never the same. If I was still a child I wouldn't know the difference but that's not the case. I remember the way things were and I can never accept a facsimile.
