Amrapali Chandra I personally like Burn better than First Burn, because although Eliza definitely isn’t some sort of saint, she is a very kind person. In Burn, she didn’t say the things out directly. She said them all in a way that she knew would hurt Hamilton, for example, “And you are paranoid in every paragraph how they perceive you”. Whereas in First Burn has her anger shown very clearly, with the repeated “Don’t” and her definitely roasting Hamilton. But I feel like that would be too similar to Congratulations. Having Eliza show her anger in a way that keeps her elegance yet still conveys her anger and sorrow while also roasting Hamilton in a way she know would hurt while having Angelica straight up telling Hamilton what he did wrong in such a sarcastic tone and putting things clear can show a lot of difference between the two sisters.

However, Angelica is the older sister who knows how gentle and sweet her sister is, she’s the initiator, which we see in Helpless, but she values her sisters happiness and sees that someone hurt her little Eliza, so it makes more sense for Angelica to be visibly pissed.

Peggy unfortunately died pretty young. She died from a sickness (I can’t remember which one) and so there was no reason for the writers to put her in. One thing I love about this song is the section where Angelica screams "ELIIIZZAAAA!" and Alexander responds with "Eliza...". It really shows that he is starting to realize he screwed up. It's not just rhyming, it was use strategically. Which very impressive in terms of writing the music, and putting that in even if you didn't catch it, it still shows her pain. It makes me appreciate the music more.

i feel so sad that they didn't include this in the musical. i know that burn is better after the reynolds pamphlet, as it keeps the momentum of it, but consider: what if congratulations was put after burn? i feel like the ending notes of burn would go into the starting notes of congratulations pretty well, and congratulations would flow into blow us all away a lot better than burn did. idk its just a thought i had.

Other examples: In "Aladdin" the song "Proud of Your Boy" and the character of Aladdin's mother, in the "Lord of the Rings" movies, the Death of Sauron and the Scouring of the Shire. But I feel like it would be like satisfied, making people ignore Eliza. Burn was a great way to show what’s going on in her head, and Congratulations would have stole the attention from her again. BarnZarn 123 that’s true, but maybe change some of the lyrics, because some of them hint that she’s confronting Alex, and when I saw Hamilton she seemed to be talking to herself Edit: actually, I changed my mind. I’ve listened to both songs and did my best remembering the performance. The regular burn fits Eliza better. First burn was more violent, yelling, anger, like how you would expect a wife to react when she finds out her husband was cheating on her. But in the burn that was used, it’s slower, softer, rage only coming out near the end, but still ending soft yet strong. Soft yet strong is a great way to describe Burn. Starts out talking about how their relationship started, Eliza talking about how she was blinded by her love for him. then it goes to when the Reynolds pamphlet came out, how her anger is starting to show, and it really effects the listener when it gets to the “you, you, you...” it gets rougher, and then everything stops for a moment. Then she’s burning the letters. I remember seeing it. Eliza taking the letter and lighting it, while her voice got stronger as she went. It was so beautiful. Then it gets to the climax, “with only the memory’s of when you were mine” carrying on the note for a few seconds, then another silence. The silence really speaks for itself, making the “i hope that you Burn” so much more powerful. In first Burn, there isn’t many silent parts, just anger. It doesn’t fit Eliza. So not only am I glad congratulations didn’t get in, I’m also glad First Burn didn’t get in. Lin made a good decision.

Peggy unfortunately died pretty young. She died from a sickness (I can’t remember which one) and so there was no reason for the writers to put her in. Maybe they could have explained why she was missing, but still. Also, I’m not entirely sure about this but I believe she died before or shortly after the war was over. i feel so sad that they didn't include this in the musical. i know that burn is better after the reynolds pamphlet, as it keeps the momentum of it, but consider: what if congratulations was put after burn? i feel like the ending notes of burn would go into the starting notes of congratulations pretty well, and congratulations would flow into blow us all away a lot better than burn did. idk its just a thought i had.

Other examples: In "Aladdin" the song "Proud of Your Boy" and the character of Aladdin's mother, in the "Lord of the Rings" movies, the Death of Sauron and the Scouring of the Shire. Other examples from "Hamilton," Lin set up the whole "Not gonna throw away my shot!" from the beginning of the first act, but when he finally got to the moment of the duel, he cut the line "Now I HAVE to throw away my shot," because, let's face it, it was hackneyed and obvious. No. Congratulations is a great song, but I’m glad it didn’t get into the soundtrack. I wanted to hear from Eliza, not Angelica. Don’t get me wrong, Angelica is amazing. I love her character! But I feel like it would be like satisfied, making people ignore Eliza. Burn was a great way to show what’s going on in her head, and Congratulations would have stole the attention from her again. I’m glad Lin didn’t put the full song into the musical. Fight me.
What if they also changed burn to the first version. That way, Eliza gets more attention. Because the first burn also made Eliza a lot more angry, and would let people feel her pain
BarnZarn 123 that’s true, but maybe change some of the lyrics, because some of them hint that she’s confronting Alex, and when I saw Hamilton she seemed to be talking to herself
Edit: actually, I changed my mind. I’ve listened to both songs and did my best remembering the performance. The regular burn fits Eliza better. First burn was more violent, yelling, anger, like how you would expect a wife to react when she finds out her husband was cheating on her. But in the burn that was used, it’s slower, softer, rage only coming out near the end, but still ending soft yet strong. Soft yet strong is a great way to describe Burn. Starts out talking about how their relationship started, Eliza talking about how she was blinded by her love for him. then it goes to when the Reynolds pamphlet came out, how her anger is starting to show, and it really effects the listener when it gets to the “you, you, you...” it gets rougher, and then everything stops for a moment. Then she’s burning the letters. I remember seeing it. Eliza taking the letter and lighting it, while her voice got stronger as she went. It was so beautiful. Then it gets to the climax, “with only the memory’s of when you were mine” carrying on the note for a few seconds, then another silence. The silence really speaks for itself, making the “i hope that you Burn” so much more powerful. In first Burn, there isn’t many silent parts, just anger. It doesn’t fit Eliza.
So not only am I glad congratulations didn’t get in, I’m also glad First Burn didn’t get in. Lin made a good decision.
