At least make po an old man so it makes more sense but the villain and the sucsessor are not even interesting . The villain has such a cool ability and they wasted the potential
Well... it could have work if they had show that Po is old now, more mature and had lived his dragon warrior life. Maybe letting Shifu died at the start of the movie, forcing Po to become a teacher and find a successor
I'm honestly positive Awkwafina just does voices for dirt cheap price, because theres no way its for the diversity hire when theres better choices, and theres no way she's as popular as stars like Chris Pratt and Jack Black.
That line of "and become something better than you already are" really REALLY bothers me... Because it craps in the face of all three movies that came before it. Wasn't the ENTIRE POINT of the Kung Fu Panda trilogy to show that you can be great _as you are_ and that you don't have to change who you are to be considered great or special??? Being "the Dragon Warrior" just means Po just being his best self. The "Dragon Warrior" isn't supposed to be some title you pass down or something, there was no Dragon Warrior before Po. Next your gonna tell me that the Furious Five are going to pass down their title to a set of five NEW warriors? That's not how this works... That's like Dwayne Johnson passing 'The Rock' title to some younger pupil or something, it just doesn't make sense. But I guess now Po has to retire prematurely to take Oogway's role??? Po is not Oogway, he's Po. They missed the entire point of the trilogy. :/
Actually in the television show it was established they were one of many furious five and the title had indeed been passed down. And Shifu was a part of his own furious five. So now his own team can come back into the story and interact. The difference here though is this does make sense and there is nothing in the movies to counter argue that idea. With Dragon Warrior though. It is clearly stated there is only one.
a damn shame, because I absolutely loved the first 3 movies. there really was no reason to make another. The ending of the third would have been a wonderful stopping point. Po is the dragon warrior, has masted chi, the valley knows peace. But I guess things just can't have endings anymore!
The furious five not being in the movie for financial reasons just proves my opinion on why having celebrity voice actors in literally every animated movie is just bad

This. Celebrities also don't have the skills to voice act so it turns out they just play themselves, not the character. If the problem was celebrities' VA costs, Dreamworks could have easily found a replacement for Furious Five. It was the right moment to do so after 8 8-year break. Is there any reason why Jackie Chan even voiced Monkey? He gets nothing to do in the movies! I could accept them keeping Tigress' Angelie Jollie VA because that character is really close to Po and could still play a major role in the story but all supportive characters should have new, professional, and cheaper Voice Actors. Sadly, Dreamworks' executives are fixated on celebrities VA because of marketing. In my country, animated movies get dubbed by professional voice actors who do that for a living and it's rare to have a celebrity voice a character, one at the top maybe. So when you hear the character speak, you associate the voice with the character, not a real person.
There are so many flaws in this story. - Why isn't Shifu taking over Oogway's position as spiritual leader instead of Po? - Why didn't Chameleon use her tongue to steal Po's kung fu first?
Shifu saw himself as unresponsible because he let Oogway's Legacy (Jade Palace) be destroyed. Also Chameleon can only take from spirits since she said "Kung fu may be performed in the body, but its secrets are housed within the spirit"

Wisdom is gained through years of experience. As for Chameleon only taking skills from the dead is a dumb condition. She should have just killed Po and taken his skills when he was caged. Eazy Peazy! This would have set up an interesting story element of a powerless Po's ghost having inter turmoil on how to defeat Chameleon with nothingness. He could gain guidance with Oogway on the spiritual plane. This also brings up the question of where was Oogway's ghost? Chameleon should have grabbed his skills.
Pretty much. Celebrities rarely even know how to voice act in the movie. The acting in the movies skills are not transferable to voice acting because you do need to harder job to do VA. I wouldn't mind Zhen character but she is. so. damn undercooked as a character because the director didn't think backstories for Zhen and the Camelion are important so when the writers finally convinced him too late in the production they did a sloppy job.
Exactly. If you are an actual good voice actor then the only way you can tell who the voice actor is, is by checking the credits and/or checking online lol think Mel Blanc who was the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, The Tasmanian Devil, Tweety-bird and so many others. There's nothing similar about any of those characters but for Akwafina, there is nothing to separate the characters from one another.
yeah, i dont know if its her or the directors but every charater she voices is the exact same, not just in how they sound and speak but in how they act too, its so annoying. i will say her charter was slightly better in this than in everything else iv seen her in apart from that one simpsons episode she was in, its that one episode where altho her voice was slightly similar it was different and her charater was completely different that makes me think its more of the directors fault then her own.
Honestly, I couldn't agree more on how stupid the reasoning for The Chameleon not learning kung fu is. She's too small, yet f*cking mantis and viper are absolute masters at it. Viper doesn't have any arms or legs and can absolutely destroy any opponent. Mantis held up an entire bridge while everyone was spinning the block on Tai Lung. Mike Mitchell was the worst choice for the director

I'll take Chris Pratt over Awkwafina any day. Chris at least sounds like a normal guy, and has been in a good chunk of really awesome stuff. Awkwafina sounds like she has no clue whether she wants to sound like a southern tomboy or a western chainsmoker so she just does this weird combination of the two. The only role of hers I liked was Ms. Tarantula in Bad Guys.
I forgot to add with all the bad/ annoying moments of the movie that Po choose Zen as the new dragon warrior instead of Tigress; his best friend. That's really cruel and unfair! He barely knows Zen, didn't trained her except for ONE move with the staff... that's it! Trusting a fox girl who is a thief; try to kill him after they met her AND betrayed him by working with the villain makes sense? Not giving this important role to Tigress? Po is a jerk now; thank's for that Dreamworks 😑
Universal is apparently too stingy to pay the voices of Furious Five (also, they could have the voices from the Legend of Awesomeness) The Furious Five were briefly mentioned about going on a mission, but Mike Mitchell said they were shown in a glimpse 😂 Who thought Mitchell was a good director? also ladypool, i don't think Po was being a jerk, as it was obviously predictable that the writers were going to have Zhen as the new dragon warrior (Po passing the torch isn't addressed well, if he's been a kung fu master/the dragon warrior in his youth for about three years within the franchise in over possibly 27 months)

He slaps as a villain, and to me he should go at it, BUT even if you gave him the best redemption arc ever, he still wouldn't be deserving of Dragon Warrior tile (guy has a RELLY large body count, he probably killed or at least hurt a lot of innocent people during his rampage and while you could argue that the main rhino guard was kinda a butt, the rest of those guys was just doing their jobs, not to mantion he almost added his father to this list TWICE, and even when both Shifu and Po gave him an out he didn't take it so to me it's a little too late), but you know who IS deserving of it: Tigress. If you are really desperate for Tai Long to get a redemption arc, him finally accepting that the title doesn't belong to him and was never supposed to would have been a good start. Just saying.
I would like to remind you that Tai Lung was imprisoned and paralyzed for years and still managed to fight his way out of a huge prison designed specifically for him, fighting his way through 1000 trained, armored and armed guards with everything from pole-arms and crossbows to dynamite. @@diegofavaratozfilms962 Let me break it down for you: he's not given enough time to shine in the movie, nobody has a strong enough reaction to him attacking them, whenever he tried to do something evil it was either undermined by a joke or had a weak fight scene: compare his best fight scene (kai vs shifu) with any of the tai lung or Shen fight scenes, it doesn't compare at all, especially later when his entire army is beaten up by old ladies and children and po spends the entire fight scene cracking jokes with no retaliation. TLDR; not given enough time to shine, used mostly as a joke

Shapeshifters are like some of the coolest guys out there and they can be SO TERRIFYING if they want to be Here's how to fix her + some other things: 1) give her an actual name. It bugs me a little how you have Tai Lung,Lord Shen and Kai but she's just Chameleon like. None of this guys were named after their animal,at least explain it as some mysterious alias or smt 2) have her kill people. Infiltrate places. Use her shapeshifting for SOMETHING. She could infiltrate the place the Furious Five,Po and Shifu are at and just,steal their kung fu (except Po's) 3) do changes on her backstory cause the "being little" thing can be so easily broken when you remember Mantis exists. You can fix it multiple ways really. Maybe her abilities come from some forbidden sorcery,or her methods were thought to be too violent,just something that justifies banishment or isolation or anything that could cause resentment 4) as much as I love the other villains I think the focus on Tai Lung should've remained. Shen wasn't a kung fu expert in fact he wanted to get rid of it,and Kai absorbed so much chi he actually exploded so idk if he realistically should still be around even as a spirit 5) DO LITERALLY THE THING THE CO-DIRECTOR WANTED AND GIVE TAI LUNG SOME PROPER CLOSURE YOU GODDAMN COWARDS 6) in this fix it of mine Shen and Kai probably wouldn't show up tbh but those two motherfuckers would NOT bow to Po at all,ever. That could have been a great introduction. Imagine her just using her ability to get closer to the furious 5 and then have her steal away most of their abilities.
I can't believe Dreamworks wants to make 2 more movies after this disaster! Seriously, the only good things were the animation and the action; the music was fine but the rest was awful! None of the jokes made me laugh, Po's dad where not entertaining or useful; they never helped their son while he fights the cameleon and KNOWS how to give him Chi power. Zen the fox is not funny or likable, i wasn't surprised that the thief who is also a lier would betray him; her past is not that tragic. Lord shen and Kai didn't talked but were there AND got defeated in 5 seconds despite being stronger than the Cameleon; she had no name and her motivation makes no sense. I saw it in cinema 2 months ago and the kids behind me didn't laugh ONCE at the jokes; they were talking to their mother most of the time. If a movie targeted to kids doesn't entertain them; there's a problem 😐
I feel the 3rd movie was the true finale, wrapped up everything. While the 4th movie would have had an OLD Po, greying fur. Maybe a bit of beard or mustache that he would be stroking. Reveal he was using his Chi to keep himself alive longer than he should have lived normally, all to find his successor. Basically put him into a more active parallel to Oogway, then when he finds them. The successor at first REFUSES kung fu. Despite the old age, Po would still act like his old self "Come ON!!! It's so cool" Then after something mystical endangers the person's family, Po saves them and they are all "Um... How'd you do that?"
I knew it was really bad when my sister was like "oh , it wasn't good at all! And I didn't it" and she's just 8! How many movies has she watched it her life time that she knows what is good or not
No one talking about the villain is basically the same as the last movie? Kai stole their chi while Chameleon steals kung fu. The big difference is it wasn’t as simple as licking them. He actually had to fight them because it’s a bloody Kung Fu movie 😂

When you realize that half the shit in this movie was borrowed from the TV shows Po not being the Dragon Warrior anymore Evil Sorceress Tai Lung coming back Po being in charge of something he clearly sucks at Having a Dragon as the climax
And, funny thing, IT WAS PROBABLY EXECUTED/DONE BETTER THAN WHATEVER THIS IS (never watched the tv shows but i know for sure they probably did better than this.)
Here's how I would have fixed te Chameleon. 1. Have it be that when she was little, her village was wiped out by bandits who also her family and friends. She decided to learn about Kung Fu not just to protect her self, but also to make sure no ever goes what she went through ever again. But no matter how hard she tried, she got rejected by every master because she was physically unable to do so. So she decided to use sorcerer to steal kung fu of every master who rejected her. 2. Have her kill people. For example, when the miners in the opening could have been digging tunnles to other villages to steal, she could have used her kung fu to straight up kill them while destroying operation. Then when she disguises herself to talk with the crime lords, make her kill one of them to show how serious she is and her great power. She then would force them to form an army for her so she could defend every city, town and village throughout China to prevent what is, in her eyes, bigger atrocities. Imagine how scary that would be. A villian who is so far gone in thier own trauma that they unleash that very pain onto others. 3. Po and the Furious Five go to stop her, but ends up taking thier Kung Fu, execpt for Po's, as Po and Tigress managed to escape while the others are locked up. When Po tries to fight her, she transforms into his friends to trick him into stopping before stealing his Kung Fu and staff, which she uses to bring back his former foes to steal thier kung fu too. She then destroys the staff which leaves Po weak. 4. She brings up how all the villains PO has faced in his life about how much pain they caused ad how she was going to prevent that from happing ever again. 5. Po finds a way to reedeem her by talking her way out of it and agreeing to find a way to teach her Kung Fu without stealing from others after she serves her time in prison. 6. After Po saves the day, make kim give his title of dragon warrior to Tigress. All of this makes her one of the most tragic, complex and interesting villains ever made.
The Nickelodeon show "TUFF Puppy" had a better Chameleon character/villain, complete with a backstory, struggles that made you sympathize with the guy, and a scary, destructive nature
for me, the bs idea that she couldn't do Kung Fu because she was "too small" could've been easily editted to be valid. she could've had a physical problem, like having glass bones or smth lol 😭 that's a better reason why masters would reject her and say she can't do Kung Fu. also gives her more initiative to be like "I need to be different if I am to do Kung Fu", hence literally shapeshifting to be someone else, someone stronger
I'm betting if Star Vs. The Forces of Evil was instead an animated movie with a "Star-Studded Cast" they probably would have casted Awkwafina as the voice of Pony Head herself, Since she has an act for Voicing Snarky and Sarcastic Female Animal Sidekicks in most of Voice Roles.
A kid actually grasped in the movie theater when Zhen betrayed Po, then we all laughed because we knew it would happen. BTW, "Zhen" is pronounced "Jen," but like with a less stressed "j"? I guess. I'm not sure how to explain how the "zh" sound works in Chinese.
As for the movie earning a ridiculous amount of money... don't act surprised maybe? It's been 8 years since the previous one (Similar happened to Star Wars The Force Awakens even though it was a remake of The New Hope) so it's not rocket science that people would go to watch what they made. Many of those viewers watched the KFP trilogy as kids or teenagers and now they're adults. That aside, this my review of it below. Some of the points match with yours quite a lot. As a KFP fan who grew up with these movies, it was a letdown. Dreamworks should understand the core audience that keeps the franchise alive are those adults who were kids as the films were released. They should target that audience. KFP 2 is considered as the best movie of the KFP franchise because it had a very mature plot so adults could enjoy it and there is subtle humor added to it so kids would have fun. Probably that was the time when Dreamworks targeted a mature audience. Here are my other thoughts: It was such "Nothing Burger" movie, it was painful to watch. You may like such "nothing burger" as it has all the ingredients done well but it wouldn't impress you, you'd quickly forget about the restaurant it was sold a day after. You'd go to the restaurant that serves excellent burgers that will blow your mind with wonderful taste (KFP1, KFP2, and KFP3) What a waste of character development, themes, villains, and stakes. Everything was sacrificed for the sake of comedy to the point we could not even learn how the characters think or feel as they kept throwing quips or were used for comedy. So when the serious scene happened I felt absolutely nothing because it was. not. earned. How dare they reuse the scene with Tigress and Po in Gongmen prison and apply it between Po and Zhen. I laughed hard and got angry when I saw that. "You did not earn it at all" I didn't care about Zhen as she has no likeable qualities as a person and should not be a dragon warrior. Li and Ping subplot is a literal filler to replace Furious Five. They have no character development and they are only there for one Deus Ex Machina moment. I could feel the lack of Furious Five oh so much :( If they wanted to save money on voice actors they should have replaced them after 8 years. If they wanted to reduce characters, just send Tigress with Po and Zhen on that mission. Tigress would have balanced the comedy a lot. The movie needed that. We can blame the director Mike Mitchell for taking this franchise that way as the writers have been the same since KPF1. It's known they had to beg the director to include any backstory for Zhen and Chameleon but it was so late in the movie's development that they couldn't do anything better. I do not want this director to work on KFP5. He had such control over the story the writers could not salvage it. It is so frustrating because fanfic writers could write the more engaging and mature story that respects the previous 3 movies and characters. The KFP franchise deserves better and tells mature stories that would move adults' hearts and minds, with a bit of comedy here and there. Calling KFP movies "kids' movies" is an insult to animation as a form of art to tell the story.
I think the Chameleon should’ve introduced an alternative method of combat similar to Lord Shen. Shen introduced cannons to make up for his lack of Kung Fu skill, so I think the Chameleon would’ve made a great mesh of Kung Fu and manipulation tactics. Taking the form of a past villain doesn’t change the fact that Po already beat them, she needs something else to provide an advantage. So have her sneak up by pretending to be a fan of Po, take the form of someone he cares for and would hesitate to hurt, frame him for crimes and turn the people against him. There’s so much to do with shapeshifters but this movie did nothing.

I’m telling you if this movie was about the Chameleon immediately taking Tai Lung’s kung fu skills, him barley escaping and finding Po, them working together, and ending it with him becoming the new Dragon Warrior and getting a redemption arc would’ve been absolute fire IMO
Shrek 4 wasn't that bad! It's better than Kung fu panda 4 for sure. Also, Toy story 4 is ok; not as good as the others but not boring either. It's fine 🙂

Two things I would have if writing this movie: 1.) Let the audience know that Zhen is working for the Chameleon. That way instead of a predictable twist villain, we have a character to root for change. 2.) Instead of Zhen being chosen as the next Dragon Warrior, make her the apprentice of the Furious Five. Then at a later date when Po choses a member of the group to be the next Dragon Warrior, there will still be five members.

That’s what I’ve been saying. It’s not Shifu’s job to control Po’s destiny. I thought he stopped being his teacher in the third one so what gave him the right to call off po’s time as the dragon warrior?
the fact that Po choses a fox thief over his own best friend tigress to become the next warrior truly did ruin his character for me tbh, and the fact the movie treats Po's power level like a ant while Zhen the mary sue has much more greater power than the main character itself is rather favoritism.. kung fu panda 4 story without awkwafina re-write: Po came back home (valley of peace) after journeying the land as a dragon warriors completing many quests. he found out that his father Ping was dying. in his deathbed, he selfishly requested Po to continue his family legacy (the noodle shop) tho he wasn't really forceful about it. After ping's death, Po became split whether he would continue being a dragon warrior or fulfill his father's wishes. he felt he owed that much to ping. So Po decided to choose a new dragon warrior successor like oogway once did. Po saw many talented warriors including shapeshifting chameleon, powerful buffalo, agile and cunning fox. none of them were fit to be dragon warrior. he knows it....but...the noodle shop... So po against his judgement handed over the title of dragon warrior to chameleon. Then po retired from the entire dragon warrior business to continue his father's legacy even taking on many rabbit apprentices in the arts noodle making and the 'secret' sauce for the soup. The newly anointed dragon warrior chameleon was good in the beginning, but started to become corrupted with power. You see reptiles should be the only ones to inherit the 'dragon warrior' title. her belief is that reptiles should be the ruling class! she believes oogway made a mistake of handing the title to a giant panda! she started building a big tower at once a peaceful valley. Trained lizard guards to oppress the citizens of the peaceful valley. Po feeling responsible for his actions was convinced by his other father Li to go back to challenge chameleon and try to put her back in the right path. As Po was about to defeat Chameleon, she shapeshifted into mister ping! how can Po strike his own father! With guilt ridden, Po held back. chameleon took that opportunity to strike Po down, but Li who was following Po just in time with speed fueled by a father's love launched himself at chameleon. Li saved his family from Lord Shen once, and this time but this time he has aged a lot and could not survive Chameleon's poisoned fist though Po was safely pushed off to the side. Po came to his senses and escaped the tower with his father. Po sought help, but no herbs could save Li from his fate. After both of his fathers deaths, Po was plunged into depression, as chameleon continued to oppress the people! Shifu now very old and retired warrior showed up one day and told Po to seek wisdom of the cherry tree. When Po arrived at the cherry tree, it was being defiled by a group of lizards which Po quickly dispatched. Then when he asked Oogway, there was no answer. When he looked over the once peaceful valley, it was now plagued with torment. Po attuned his dragon warrior senses again and understood what he must do. He mustered his courage and went back to the tower once more. There he challenged chameleon again, and she deployed the same tactics. But this time, Po had master his emotion and was able to defeat her and retake the Dragon Warrior title. After Po gave a long lecture to chameleon, she was then put in chains. As the story ends, Po can be seen meditating at the grave site of both of his fathers finally made peace with his destiny.
Fun fact: stuff such as the Furious Five appearing in the end credits and the Chameleon being a mediocre villain at best were all last minute changes. Apparently, the director Mike Mitchell was extremely stubborn when it came to working with his team. They begged him to make these changes but he didn't care about them until it was too late. Someone finally mentioning that the best scenes in the whole movie start showing up after the Furious Five enter… 😭… I’ve been waiting for this movie for 8 FREAKING years, and all we get is… is… Awkwafina…
A major criticism I have that no one has pointed out is that the staff that oogway had when he was alive was given to Shifu, so clearly he was supposed to (and is) Oogways successor, not po. Shifu is also the one that tells Po what to do in every movie including this one. If Po is the spiritual leader why didn't he know when to pick a successor. Clearly if shifu is the one making that decision, he is the spiritual leader.
Nah they needa stop putting in the same female character in ever single movie. Just cuz she looks different doesnt mean its not the same thing. And i honestly hate that they started adding that SPECIFIC personality for every female character they wanna shine light on cuz tbh as soon as she started talking i already knew where the movie was going. It was way too predictable becuase omg edgy girl with a horrible past becomes a horrible person and gets redeemed. If they actually wanted to give a feminine point of view they would at least give em different personalities. But nah. Same character in different fonts constantly and the worst type of main character at that.
I'm glad that none of the Furious Five became the Dragon Warrior. I wish they were in the movie, but it's stupid for one of them to be the DW. They learned that none of them could be it because it just wasn't them.
There are going to be 6 movies in total, I remember that Dreamworks already announced that there are going to be 6 movies in total right after the 3rd movie came out.
I DIDN'T KNOW A MR BEAST CAMEO WAS IN THIS MOVIE. What the shit, that's like when they put Tyler Ninja Blevins in Hotel Transylvania 4. If I had a nickel for every time a large internet celebrity was put in a 4th movie, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Thats so sad that the best part of the movie is the last 10 seconds when the 5 come back and a spoof song plays. Such a bummer that such an amazing franchise has ended so poorly.
My friend tyler watched this movie with me in the theatre, then afterwards he tried to do “kung fu” down the fricking stairs, i cringed so hard the next day that i had to bash my head through a wall to forget it, [i didn’t 💀] and fun fact: THEY ARE PLANNING ON A 5TH ONE!
They are definitely doing more after this because this one's apparently the most profitable one of the lot due to the movie's budget being sliced in half compared to the first three.
I adore Kung Fu Panda with all my heart, but in my opinion- this movie was a huge disrespect to the ones before it. The second I saw the "animation style" - and millennial humor, I knew it'd be bad. Kung Fu Panda 2 is my absolute favorite movie in all of the trilogy. I've watched it so many times- listen to their incredible score almost every day. The visuals weren't ``over exagerated``, it was the perfect balance between amazing graphics, and REALISTIC lighting. Now let's get to Po, the way he acted felt so much more realistic. At times he was silly, but when the serious times came- he was SERIOUS! It seems like in the 3rd film- and now the 4th, they try to make him ``silly and goofy `` all the time. Po in the 1st and 2nd film had such a lovable personality, he had so much EMOTION, his facial expressions weren't over the top either. And I feel as if the characters actually had ``mass`` - like they were actually there. Also like, can we treat the villians seriously like we did in the first two films? They treated Kai like he was a joke- he had a lot of potential to be an INCREDIBLE villian! Especially with his theme song. The lighting, backrounds, ESPECIALLY THE STORY, and the overall design of the movie was a perfect balance of everything. In a way, ( Hopefully this makes sense ) - when I watched Po in the first two movies, I heard PO. I didn't hear Jack Black. But now, all I hear is Jack Black TRYING to be Po. It's just not the same anymore. The voice acting did not feel natural at all in the 4th- you could tell they were reading a script. And Lord Shen, the darker tone to the film made it just THAT good. He had such a personal relation to Po- which made him all the more terrifying. I don't think this movie is horrible, it's just not up to par with the 1st, 2nd, and even the 3rd.
Of all the stories that could be made with these characters, why do terrible sequels always choose storylines that contradict previously established lore??

I feel like a lot of previously good movie studios are just throwing everything they've worked for away just to get money from people who dont understand a good plot (0.2% of everyone on earth).
All the bad guys bowing to Po really had me heated because 1. As you said, Shen is there. Shen went out of his way to try to genocide an entire species off the face of the earth on the mere possibility that a panda might be who was destined to defeat him one day. No one has done as much harm to Po as Shen has and he went out, unrepentant for what he had done and standing by the very real horrors he committed. 2. The kids do not want Awkwafina and her blaccent. The kids want a Tai Lung redemption. This is not a Tai Lung redemption.
Hollywood just can't stop beating that poor dead horse...or at least it used to be a horse. Kung fu panda 4 feels like Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Both cuts most of the main cast apart from like 3 to 4 with a new threat and new side characters to tag along our old main character who is just going though another adventure after finishing their arc.
The message of Kung Fu Panda 4 of "embracing change" doesnt work because the change is unnessesairy. Kung Fu Panda 1: Po overcomes the weakness of his body to defeat Tai Lung Kung Fu Panda 2: Po overcomes his PTSD to defeat Shen Kung Fu Panda 3: Po masters spirit/chi to defeat Kai Kung Fu Panda 4: Po needs a successor for Dragon Warrior. Why? The first movie established Dragon Warrior is "just be yourself". Giving the title to someone else doesn't help defeat the Chameleon in anyway. What gives Shifu the authority to tell Po to give up that title?

That line of "and become something better than you already are" really REALLY bothers me... Because it craps in the face of all three movies that came before it. Being "the Dragon Warrior" just means Po just being his best self. The "Dragon Warrior" isn't supposed to be some title you pass down or something, there was no Dragon Warrior before Po. Next your gonna tell me that the Furious Five are going to pass down their title to a set of five NEW warriors? That's not how this works... That's like Dwayne Johnson passing 'The Rock' title to some younger pupil or something, it just doesn't make sense.

Actually in the television show it was established they were one of many furious five and the title had indeed been passed down. And Shifu was a part of his own furious five. So now his own team can come back into the story and interact.
The difference here though is this does make sense and there is nothing in the movies to counter argue that idea.
With Dragon Warrior though. It is clearly stated there is only one.

a damn shame, because I absolutely loved the first 3 movies. there really was no reason to make another. The ending of the third would have been a wonderful stopping point. Po is the dragon warrior, has masted chi, the valley knows peace. But I guess things just can't have endings anymore!

This. Celebrities also don't have the skills to voice act so it turns out they just play themselves, not the character. If the problem was celebrities' VA costs, Dreamworks could have easily found a replacement for Furious Five. It was the right moment to do so after 8 8-year break. Is there any reason why Jackie Chan even voiced Monkey? He gets nothing to do in the movies! I could accept them keeping Tigress' Angelie Jollie VA because that character is really close to Po and could still play a major role in the story but all supportive characters should have new, professional, and cheaper Voice Actors.
Sadly, Dreamworks' executives are fixated on celebrities VA because of marketing.
In my country, animated movies get dubbed by professional voice actors who do that for a living and it's rare to have a celebrity voice a character, one at the top maybe. So when you hear the character speak, you associate the voice with the character, not a real person.
There are so many flaws in this story.
- Why isn't Shifu taking over Oogway's position as spiritual leader instead of Po?
- Why didn't Chameleon use her tongue to steal Po's kung fu first?
Watch the movie, Shifu ain't happy Oogway chose Po to move up instead of himself.
Shifu saw himself as unresponsible because he let Oogway's Legacy (Jade Palace) be destroyed.
Also Chameleon can only take from spirits since she said "Kung fu may be performed in the body, but its secrets are housed within the spirit"
Oogway chose Po as his successor in the 3rd movie when he gave him the staff

This would have set up an interesting story element of a powerless Po's ghost having inter turmoil on how to defeat Chameleon with nothingness. He could gain guidance with Oogway on the spiritual plane.
This also brings up the question of where was Oogway's ghost? Chameleon should have grabbed his skills.

Pretty much. Celebrities rarely even know how to voice act in the movie. The acting in the movies skills are not transferable to voice acting because you do need to harder job to do VA.
I wouldn't mind Zhen character but she is. so. damn undercooked as a character because the director didn't think backstories for Zhen and the Camelion are important so when the writers finally convinced him too late in the production they did a sloppy job.

If you are an actual good voice actor then the only way you can tell who the voice actor is, is by checking the credits and/or checking online lol think Mel Blanc who was the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Foghorn Leghorn, The Tasmanian Devil, Tweety-bird and so many others. There's nothing similar about any of those characters but for Akwafina, there is nothing to separate the characters from one another.
yeah, i dont know if its her or the directors but every charater she voices is the exact same, not just in how they sound and speak but in how they act too, its so annoying. i will say her charter was slightly better in this than in everything else iv seen her in apart from that one simpsons episode she was in, its that one episode where altho her voice was slightly similar it was different and her charater was completely different that makes me think its more of the directors fault then her own.
Honestly, I couldn't agree more on how stupid the reasoning for The Chameleon not learning kung fu is. She's too small, yet f*cking mantis and viper are absolute masters at it. Viper doesn't have any arms or legs and can absolutely destroy any opponent. Mantis held up an entire bridge while everyone was spinning the block on Tai Lung. Mike Mitchell was the worst choice for the director

I'll take Chris Pratt over Awkwafina any day. Chris at least sounds like a normal guy, and has been in a good chunk of really awesome stuff. Awkwafina sounds like she has no clue whether she wants to sound like a southern tomboy or a western chainsmoker so she just does this weird combination of the two. The only role of hers I liked was Ms. Tarantula in Bad Guys.

I forgot to add with all the bad/ annoying moments of the movie that Po choose Zen as the new dragon warrior instead of Tigress; his best friend. That's really cruel and unfair! He barely knows Zen, didn't trained her except for ONE move with the staff... that's it! Trusting a fox girl who is a thief; try to kill him after they met her AND betrayed him by working with the villain makes sense? Not giving this important role to Tigress? He slaps as a villain, and to me he should go at it, BUT even if you gave him the best redemption arc ever, he still wouldn't be deserving of Dragon Warrior tile (guy has a RELLY large body count, he probably killed or at least hurt a lot of innocent people during his rampage and while you could argue that the main rhino guard was kinda a butt, the rest of those guys was just doing their jobs, not to mantion he almost added his father to this list TWICE, and even when both Shifu and Po gave him an out he didn't take it so to me it's a little too late), but you know who IS deserving of it: Tigress. If you are really desperate for Tai Long to get a redemption arc, him finally accepting that the title doesn't belong to him and was never supposed to would have been a good start. Just saying.

@@diegofavaratozfilms962 Let me break it down for you: he's not given enough time to shine in the movie, nobody has a strong enough reaction to him attacking them, whenever he tried to do something evil it was either undermined by a joke or had a weak fight scene: compare his best fight scene (kai vs shifu) with any of the tai lung or Shen fight scenes, it doesn't compare at all, especially later when his entire army is beaten up by old ladies and children and po spends the entire fight scene cracking jokes with no retaliation. TLDR; not given enough time to shine, used mostly as a joke

Here's how to fix her + some other things:
1) give her an actual name. It bugs me a little how you have Tai Lung,Lord Shen and Kai but she's just Chameleon like. None of this guys were named after their animal,at least explain it as some mysterious alias or smt
2) have her kill people. Infiltrate places. Use her shapeshifting for SOMETHING. She could infiltrate the place the Furious Five,Po and Shifu are at and just,steal their kung fu (except Po's)
3) do changes on her backstory cause the "being little" thing can be so easily broken when you remember Mantis exists. You can fix it multiple ways really. Maybe her abilities come from some forbidden sorcery,or her methods were thought to be too violent,just something that justifies banishment or isolation or anything that could cause resentment
4) as much as I love the other villains I think the focus on Tai Lung should've remained. Shen wasn't a kung fu expert in fact he wanted to get rid of it,and Kai absorbed so much chi he actually exploded so idk if he realistically should still be around even as a spirit
5) DO LITERALLY THE THING THE CO-DIRECTOR WANTED AND GIVE TAI LUNG SOME PROPER CLOSURE YOU GODDAMN COWARDS
6) in this fix it of mine Shen and Kai probably wouldn't show up tbh but those two motherfuckers would NOT bow to Po at all,ever. Tai Lung I can buy him having a moment of humillity. The other two is way harder to believe
Shen and Kai would have NEVER bowed to Po. Shen committed genocide against his race, and I KNOW he wants that get back. Its going to be ON SIGHT with him. And Kai straight up said he would wait over 500 years to fold him.
That could have been a great introduction. Imagine her just using her ability to get closer to the furious 5 and then have her steal away most of their abilities.
Kai's spirit literally exploded and they brought him back as a cameo 😂. I can't take this movie seriously
I can't believe Dreamworks wants to make 2 more movies after this disaster! Seriously, the only good things were the animation and the action; the music was fine but the rest was awful! None of the jokes made me laugh, Po's dad where not entertaining or useful; they never helped their son while he fights the cameleon and KNOWS how to give him Chi power. Zen the fox is not funny or likable, i wasn't surprised that the thief who is also a lier would betray him; her past is not that tragic. Lord shen and Kai didn't talked but were there AND got defeated in 5 seconds despite being stronger than the Cameleon; she had no name and her motivation makes no sense.
I saw it in cinema 2 months ago and the kids behind me didn't laugh ONCE at the jokes; they were talking to their mother most of the time. If a movie targeted to kids doesn't entertain them; there's a problem 😐
I feel the 3rd movie was the true finale, wrapped up everything.
While the 4th movie would have had an OLD Po, greying fur. Maybe a bit of beard or mustache that he would be stroking.
Reveal he was using his Chi to keep himself alive longer than he should have lived normally, all to find his successor.
Basically put him into a more active parallel to Oogway, then when he finds them. The successor at first REFUSES kung fu.
Despite the old age, Po would still act like his old self "Come ON!!! It's so cool"
Then after something mystical endangers the person's family, Po saves them and they are all "Um... How'd you do that?"
It isnt even targeted to kids, its a family movie. Other parts vere good at being family friendly but this is... just bad. Not even for kids .
I knew it was really bad when my sister was like "oh , it wasn't good at all! And I didn't it" and she's just 8! How many movies has she watched it her life time that she knows what is good or not

No one talking about the villain is basically the same as the last movie? Kai stole their chi while Chameleon steals kung fu. The big difference is it wasn’t as simple as licking them. He actually had to fight them because it’s a bloody Kung Fu movie 😂

And, funny thing, IT WAS PROBABLY EXECUTED/DONE BETTER THAN WHATEVER THIS IS (never watched the tv shows but i know for sure they probably did better than this.)
Here's how I would have fixed te Chameleon.
1. Have it be that when she was little, her village was wiped out by bandits who also her family and friends. She decided to learn about Kung Fu not just to protect her self, but also to make sure no ever goes what she went through ever again. But no matter how hard she tried, she got rejected by every master because she was physically unable to do so. So she decided to use sorcerer to steal kung fu of every master who rejected her.
2. Have her kill people. For example, when the miners in the opening could have been digging tunnles to other villages to steal, she could have used her kung fu to straight up kill them while destroying operation. Then when she disguises herself to talk with the crime lords, make her kill one of them to show how serious she is and her great power. She then would force them to form an army for her so she could defend every city, town and village throughout China to prevent what is, in her eyes, bigger atrocities. Imagine how scary that would be. A villian who is so far gone in thier own trauma that they unleash that very pain onto others.
3. Po and the Furious Five go to stop her, but ends up taking thier Kung Fu, execpt for Po's, as Po and Tigress managed to escape while the others are locked up. When Po tries to fight her, she transforms into his friends to trick him into stopping before stealing his Kung Fu and staff, which she uses to bring back his former foes to steal thier kung fu too. She then destroys the staff which leaves Po weak.
4. She brings up how all the villains PO has faced in his life about how much pain they caused ad how she was going to prevent that from happing ever again.
5. Po finds a way to reedeem her by talking her way out of it and agreeing to find a way to teach her Kung Fu without stealing from others after she serves her time in prison.
6. After Po saves the day, make kim give his title of dragon warrior to Tigress.
All of this makes her one of the most tragic, complex and interesting villains ever made.
The Nickelodeon show "TUFF Puppy" had a better Chameleon character/villain, complete with a backstory, struggles that made you sympathize with the guy, and a scary, destructive nature
for me, the bs idea that she couldn't do Kung Fu because she was "too small" could've been easily editted to be valid. she could've had a physical problem, like having glass bones or smth lol 😭 that's a better reason why masters would reject her and say she can't do Kung Fu. also gives her more initiative to be like "I need to be different if I am to do Kung Fu", hence literally shapeshifting to be someone else, someone stronger

Usually, we don't like a character because of bad script, not the voice actor. Zhen is the case where both suck.
TBF, it would have remained the same writing and direction no matter what. Awkwafina or no Awkwafina, really is a no-win situation here.

I'm betting if Star Vs. The Forces of Evil was instead an animated movie with a "Star-Studded Cast" they probably would have casted Awkwafina as the voice of Pony Head herself, Since she has an act for Voicing Snarky and Sarcastic Female Animal Sidekicks in most of Voice Roles.
At least her voice fits the character in this case. Though tbh, I’d be down for a movie to replace the ending we got lol, even if we had awkwafina
If anyone was to be given the role of Dragon Warrior…it’s tigress. She’s had the best growth, skill, and relationship with Po to have earned it.
A kid actually grasped in the movie theater when Zhen betrayed Po, then we all laughed because we knew it would happen.
BTW, "Zhen" is pronounced "Jen," but like with a less stressed "j"? I guess. I'm not sure how to explain how the "zh" sound works in Chinese.
As for the movie earning a ridiculous amount of money... don't act surprised maybe? It's been 8 years since the previous one (Similar happened to Star Wars The Force Awakens even though it was a remake of The New Hope) so it's not rocket science that people would go to watch what they made. Many of those viewers watched the KFP trilogy as kids or teenagers and now they're adults.
That aside, this my review of it below. Some of the points match with yours quite a lot.
As a KFP fan who grew up with these movies, it was a letdown. Dreamworks should understand the core audience that keeps the franchise alive are those adults who were kids as the films were released. They should target that audience. KFP 2 is considered as the best movie of the KFP franchise because it had a very mature plot so adults could enjoy it and there is subtle humor added to it so kids would have fun. Probably that was the time when Dreamworks targeted a mature audience.
Here are my other thoughts:
It was such "Nothing Burger" movie, it was painful to watch. You may like such "nothing burger" as it has all the ingredients done well but it wouldn't impress you, you'd quickly forget about the restaurant it was sold a day after. You'd go to the restaurant that serves excellent burgers that will blow your mind with wonderful taste (KFP1, KFP2, and KFP3)
What a waste of character development, themes, villains, and stakes. Everything was sacrificed for the sake of comedy to the point we could not even learn how the characters think or feel as they kept throwing quips or were used for comedy. So when the serious scene happened I felt absolutely nothing because it was. not. earned. How dare they reuse the scene with Tigress and Po in Gongmen prison and apply it between Po and Zhen. I laughed hard and got angry when I saw that. "You did not earn it at all" I didn't care about Zhen as she has no likeable qualities as a person and should not be a dragon warrior.
Li and Ping subplot is a literal filler to replace Furious Five. They have no character development and they are only there for one Deus Ex Machina moment. I could feel the lack of Furious Five oh so much :( If they wanted to save money on voice actors they should have replaced them after 8 years. If they wanted to reduce characters, just send Tigress with Po and Zhen on that mission. Tigress would have balanced the comedy a lot. The movie needed that.
We can blame the director Mike Mitchell for taking this franchise that way as the writers have been the same since KPF1. It's known they had to beg the director to include any backstory for Zhen and Chameleon but it was so late in the movie's development that they couldn't do anything better. I do not want this director to work on KFP5. He had such control over the story the writers could not salvage it.
It is so frustrating because fanfic writers could write the more engaging and mature story that respects the previous 3 movies and characters.
The KFP franchise deserves better and tells mature stories that would move adults' hearts and minds, with a bit of comedy here and there. Calling KFP movies "kids' movies" is an insult to animation as a form of art to tell the story.
It’s crazy that we only have 3 Kung Fu Panda movies, and I’m happy with that.
I think the Chameleon should’ve introduced an alternative method of combat similar to Lord Shen.
Shen introduced cannons to make up for his lack of Kung Fu skill, so I think the Chameleon would’ve made a great mesh of Kung Fu and manipulation tactics. Taking the form of a past villain doesn’t change the fact that Po already beat them, she needs something else to provide an advantage. So have her sneak up by pretending to be a fan of Po, take the form of someone he cares for and would hesitate to hurt, frame him for crimes and turn the people against him. There’s so much to do with shapeshifters but this movie did nothing.
Imagine how hilarious it would have been if the chameleon went over her "Tragic backstory" while Mantis was right there.

Not even one of the co-directors agreed with this movie, saying that the other put far too much comedy in what used to be a balanced franchise. Two things I would have if writing this movie:
1.) Let the audience know that Zhen is working for the Chameleon. That way instead of a predictable twist villain, we have a character to root for change.
2.) Instead of Zhen being chosen as the next Dragon Warrior, make her the apprentice of the Furious Five. Then at a later date when Po choses a member of the group to be the next Dragon Warrior, there will still be five members.

the fact that Po choses a fox thief over his own best friend tigress to become the next warrior truly did ruin his character for me tbh, and the fact the movie treats Po's power level like a ant while Zhen the mary sue has much more greater power than the main character itself is rather favoritism.. Po came back home (valley of peace) after journeying the land as a dragon warriors completing many quests. he found out that his father Ping was dying. in his deathbed, he selfishly requested Po to continue his family legacy (the noodle shop) tho he wasn't really forceful about it. After ping's death, Po became split whether he would continue being a dragon warrior or fulfill his father's wishes. he felt he owed that much to ping. So Po decided to choose a new dragon warrior successor like oogway once did.
Po saw many talented warriors including shapeshifting chameleon, powerful buffalo, agile and cunning fox. none of them were fit to be dragon warrior. he knows it....but...the noodle shop...
So po against his judgement handed over the title of dragon warrior to chameleon. Then po retired from the entire dragon warrior business to continue his father's legacy even taking on many rabbit apprentices in the arts noodle making and the 'secret' sauce for the soup.
The newly anointed dragon warrior chameleon was good in the beginning, but started to become corrupted with power. You see reptiles should be the only ones to inherit the 'dragon warrior' title. her belief is that reptiles should be the ruling class! she believes oogway made a mistake of handing the title to a giant panda! she started building a big tower at once a peaceful valley. Trained lizard guards to oppress the citizens of the peaceful valley.
Po feeling responsible for his actions was convinced by his other father Li to go back to challenge chameleon and try to put her back in the right path. As Po was about to defeat Chameleon, she shapeshifted into mister ping! how can Po strike his own father! With guilt ridden, Po held back. chameleon took that opportunity to strike Po down, but Li who was following Po just in time with speed fueled by a father's love launched himself at chameleon. Li saved his family from Lord Shen once, and this time but this time he has aged a lot and could not survive Chameleon's poisoned fist though Po was safely pushed off to the side.
Po came to his senses and escaped the tower with his father. Po sought help, but no herbs could save Li from his fate. After both of his fathers deaths, Po was plunged into depression, as chameleon continued to oppress the people!
Shifu now very old and retired warrior showed up one day and told Po to seek wisdom of the cherry tree. When Po arrived at the cherry tree, it was being defiled by a group of lizards which Po quickly dispatched. Then when he asked Oogway, there was no answer. When he looked over the once peaceful valley, it was now plagued with torment. Po attuned his dragon warrior senses again and understood what he must do. He mustered his courage and went back to the tower once more. There he challenged chameleon again, and she deployed the same tactics. But this time, Po had master his emotion and was able to defeat her and retake the Dragon Warrior title.
After Po gave a long lecture to chameleon, she was then put in chains. As the story ends, Po can be seen meditating at the grave site of both of his fathers finally made peace with his destiny.

Apparently, the director Mike Mitchell was extremely stubborn when it came to working with his team. They begged him to make these changes but he didn't care about them until it was too late.

A major criticism I have that no one has pointed out is that the staff that oogway had when he was alive was given to Shifu, so clearly he was supposed to (and is) Oogways successor, not po. Shifu is also the one that tells Po what to do in every movie including this one. If Po is the spiritual leader why didn't he know when to pick a successor. Clearly if shifu is the one making that decision, he is the spiritual leader.
Everything in the movie felt impactless, and I'm tired of Awkwafina.

I'm glad that none of the Furious Five became the Dragon Warrior. I wish they were in the movie, but it's stupid for one of them to be the DW. They learned that none of them could be it because it just wasn't them.

Thats so sad that the best part of the movie is the last 10 seconds when the 5 come back and a spoof song plays. Such a bummer that such an amazing franchise has ended so poorly.

They are definitely doing more after this because this one's apparently the most profitable one of the lot due to the movie's budget being sliced in half compared to the first three.

love your videos my guy, I clipped a bit from your Tangled video and it's one of my favorite things to rewatch
I adore Kung Fu Panda with all my heart, but in my opinion- this movie was a huge disrespect to the ones before it. The second I saw the "animation style" - and millennial humor, I knew it'd be bad. Kung Fu Panda 2 is my absolute favorite movie in all of the trilogy. I've watched it so many times- listen to their incredible score almost every day. The visuals weren't ``over exagerated``, it was the perfect balance between amazing graphics, and REALISTIC lighting.
Now let's get to Po, the way he acted felt so much more realistic. At times he was silly, but when the serious times came- he was SERIOUS!
It seems like in the 3rd film- and now the 4th, they try to make him ``silly and goofy `` all the time. Po in the 1st and 2nd film had such a lovable personality, he had so much EMOTION, his facial expressions weren't over the top either. And I feel as if the characters actually had ``mass`` - like they were actually there. Also like, can we treat the villians seriously like we did in the first two films? They treated Kai like he was a joke- he had a lot of potential to be an INCREDIBLE villian! Especially with his theme song.
The lighting, backrounds, ESPECIALLY THE STORY, and the overall design of the movie was a perfect balance of everything.
In a way, ( Hopefully this makes sense ) - when I watched Po in the first two movies, I heard PO. I didn't hear Jack Black. But now, all I hear is Jack Black TRYING to be Po. It's just not the same anymore. The voice acting did not feel natural at all in the 4th- you could tell they were reading a script.
And Lord Shen, the darker tone to the film made it just THAT good. He had such a personal relation to Po- which made him all the more terrifying. I don't think this movie is horrible, it's just not up to par with the 1st, 2nd, and even the 3rd.
OK, but I will give the movie this that Jack Black Britney Spears cover is fire!

I feel like a lot of previously good movie studios are just throwing everything they've worked for away just to get money from people who dont understand a good plot (0.2% of everyone on earth).
All the bad guys bowing to Po really had me heated because
1. As you said, Shen is there. Shen went out of his way to try to genocide an entire species off the face of the earth on the mere possibility that a panda might be who was destined to defeat him one day. No one has done as much harm to Po as Shen has and he went out, unrepentant for what he had done and standing by the very real horrors he committed.
2. The kids do not want Awkwafina and her blaccent. The kids want a Tai Lung redemption. This is not a Tai Lung redemption.
Hollywood just can't stop beating that poor dead horse...or at least it used to be a horse. It's basically glue now. 😑
