  • Today's brew is a new method for littlejohn, a mix of steeped grain and dry extract to produce a full batch of beer, easily completed with just a stockpot on the stovetop.
A simple beer with a simple process, easy for new or developing brewers to step up from kit extract brewing.

You should still get some gravity points from the Pils/Munich steep. Probably around 7 (or SG 1.007) in a 20 litre batch. The Pilsner and Munich grains will convert their starch to sugar. Certainly looking forward to tasting day.

I would have estimated about 7 points from the grain. If using specialites than that will drop right off, but in this case, yes points to be grabbed. I'm keen to see how this finishes up, looking to play with method a bit going forward.

Good one. I have never tried bittering from only 15 minutes boiling. Will have to give it a shot.

The 15 minute hop additions with the 15MBK were an area of concern for me when first looking at them... and still are. It will work fine in this brew and in several styles that work with late hopping, but I don;t see how they are going to get the job done for lagers, IPA's, Stouts and a whackof other styles that need a good bitter charge up front. I will certainly be extending boil times on styles that requre it if I continue with this method... end of the day I'm not running this method purely to save time, so adding another 25-30 minutes to the boil isn't going to be an issue.

I’m interested to see how this ends up as it’s the avenue that I’m looking at going down as a step up from kits. I’m more likely to go for a 30 minute boil, at least to start with. Could you save time by cold steeping the grains the night before? My Digiboil is pretty quick to bring a small volume of liquid to the boil and using refrigerated spring or tap water (as I’ve seen you do on other videos) could allow the yeast to be pitched sooner. I think it could be a fairly quick brew day if those methods were used. Cheers!

I will need to adjust the boil time to allow for proper bittering. Cold steeping could work and would save allow to split the brew time. Using cold water would help as well. I knocked this brew up on short notice so hadn't prepped as well as I could.

So get on with it. We don't need a back story of 6 repeats saying you thought of this idea, but Kegland did it, and this and that.

Steven I'm sorry if that comes off as rude or inconsiderate. Not what I intended. My channel has always been about documenting my journey, and as part of that, sharing my experience and learnt knowledge for the betterment of others brewing. I have always ran the channel as a 'discussion' between myself and the viewer, explaining what I am doing, why I am doing it and what I hope to achieve; all aimed at giving inexperienced, new or brewers looking to improve, as much info to implement into their own brewing as possible. That at times will result in some waffle.... I am unscripted and off the cuff, so sometimes I go in circles. I understand that plenty of people are looking for quick answers without any explanation and there are a multitude of channels out there that can do that..... but I will never just be a videography of a recipe..... anyone can find a recipe, watch one video and carry on. I've considered cutting things back... but that wouldn't be littlejohn. I hope you can stick around, grab a beer and watch my videos when you are relaxed and have the time. Good Brewing.
