    Great mode, Very inspirational! Thanks. I love the way you made it mold to the kayak hull and kept a low center of gravity. I will look fwd to seeing the improvements on the next version. Although black looks cool, I would have opted for a more heat-reflective outside ( Hot water kills bait). I don't like the idea of having it overflow into the back of the kayak. If the scupper gets clogged, that area will fill up with water causing the free surface effect (instability).

    I saw this in action on Shane’s kayak and I had to see how that amazing craftsmanship was done. Beautiful work and so dang effective. So much better than having bait with all busted tails and fins 😂 One question if you have the time: I failed to look at how the water is expelled; does it just overflow out the top?

    EKFT is usually pretty rough, not surprised you flipped 5 times. This livewell looks amazing, I've always had a Hobie livewell but my 4 kayaking buddies all pull your PVC tube around.

      This was the day after the tournament. 15-20mph of onshore wind. It wasn't big when I launched, but when I headed in from 300ft the waves were around 4ft. At a half mile offshore it came up to 20ft and that's where it was breaking. The outback does not surf, the nose dug in and the whole kayak pivoted. No coming back after that. I learned a lot of the experience and was lucky I didn't lose more. Fish finder and reels were all in the hull in dry bag and my rods were all strapped to the side of the kayak.

      @@FlyingFish_TV When the weather is marginal, It frequently gets like that straight off 16th st. on an outgoing tide. If it's breaking there, It is usually better to pedal in to the swim buoys a quarter mile south and then pedal Nth along the swim buoys until you are straight off the launch area.

    I love your videos mate and am keen to do a live well for my Hobie compass in NZ soon. I have not thought too hard on it yet but I would like one in front for convenience. I built your rocket launcher this week with a few mods you will probably like, mainly a "stay" to take the flex and creak out of the design. If I get time I will post it up. I am lucky to have a laser cutter which makes things much quicker.

    love how you did the top. Is it all glassed together?

    • @FlyingFish_TV
      @FlyingFish_TV  2 роки тому

      This one I glassed from the outside. For a better finish I tack the the top on with a little bit of glue then cut out the lid hole and glass it on the inside. Less to fair on the outside and stays closer to the shape of the hull. That will be particularly important on you kayak as I think he rear well is pretty deep.

    Great vid, I miss the new content of you fishing over here on O'ahu, but I've been re-watching your old stuff. Quick question, doesn't the extra weight of the water in the live well weigh you down quite a bit? I mean I had a few inches of water in my kayak and it was a drag, not to mention it really sat low in the ocean.

    Q1. The blue tape was masking tape, yes?
    Q2. The foam you used for creating a form was closed cell foam?
    Many thanks for the vid! Jamie

    • @FlyingFish_TV

      Yes it was blue 3m painters tape. And the foam was closed cell. It’s the pink foam they use for insulation, I got it at Home Depot.

    Great video, thanks for showing your process!!! Can't wait to see the next one! Was the whole tournament a total bummer or worth it for something to build on? Would a PA14 kept you from flipping or just too insane? Thanks again for all your videos!!!

    • @FlyingFish_TV
      @FlyingFish_TV  3 роки тому

      The tournament was okay, but pretty expensive. It was during covid so most of the fun stuff was shutdown. Not sure my Revo would have even saved me on that day. The outback however, digs in when pushed by a big wave and then pivots off the nose. No recovering from that.

      @@FlyingFish_TV I have been able to just stop peddling to prevent a broach on the open ocean, but our waves are a lot smaller in Florida than in Hawaii. It seems mandatory to pull the mirage in the surf even on small waves to avoid a flip.

    Hi Dan. Regards the odd fish you caught & uploaded the clip for 3 weeks ago….take a look at Patagonian Toothfish info & pic’s on the web. I’m interested to know if this is another name for the fish you caught? Thanks. Jamie (New Zealand).

    • @FlyingFish_TV
      @FlyingFish_TV  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Trevor, I hope things are going well for you in NZ. I checked out the fish and it looks different from the one I caught. The one I caught is called a Walu in hawaiian or an oil fish more commonly. It's also affectionately called the diarrhea fish (too oily to digest).

    Hi Dan, what’s the water capacity please? What would you say was best minimum?? Jamie

    • @FlyingFish_TV
      @FlyingFish_TV  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Trevor. This one was about 7 gallons (26 liters) at full, ideally you only need 3 gallons (11 liters) for a really decent live bait well. The live bait tube was only 1.3 gallons that I used to use. The hard part is getting the water out as fast as it is pumped in. A 1.5 thru hull was the sweet spot for the over flow for a 500gph pump. I need to build version 3.0, but I’m crazy busy right now with my airline training.
