  • A UA-camr by the name of Umami has created a surreal and obscure webseries by the name of Interface. In this, we follow the adventures of Henryk and Mischief as they go about their lives in a world that isn't quite what it seems. Tonight, we're going to dive fully into this apocalyptic universe in order to figure out what exactly is going on.

When Mischief calls out the octopus for preparing other fish, that always struck me as odd. There's a similar sketch in Family Guy (of all places), that left me with a similar feeling, where some seagulls are eating KFC, and then getting super grossed out when they find out they're eating birds. But birds eating birds, and fish eating fish, they're only connected to each other by being in the same taxonomical order (so not family, genus, or species). It's the same as humans eating other mammals (like cows, pigs, sheep), which is generally an accepted thing.

Nightmare Files maybe- and it’s just a shot in the dark- because a birds ability to fly makes it sort of synonymous with freedom, Mischief is alluding to his attempts to free himself from the current KAMI “reality” OR expanding on the theory that Mischief is Henryk- maybe Mischief is the part of him that controls things such as his free will, thoughts, etc. (which would explain why Henryk only speaks as Mischief) and that part has been “imprisoned” by whatever experiments were conducted on him is trying to break free and figure out how to reconnect with his physical self.

My favourite part is the beginning when the cigarette drops from the mans mouth. In reality, it wouldnt take long for the cigarette to hit the ground. Maybe, a second and a half. What is implied by the scene, at least in my interpretation, is that the being is able to feed the man so much information before it hits the ground. In other words, He turns around and in an instant is basically given all the information.

So after watching more episodes, it dawned on me what exactly Interface itself was. Interface is an artificial afterlife, in which all cerebral electricity (i.e., soul, life force) is aggregated within one point, in which all can be transformed and transcended. They dystopia before us is actual reality whose CE has been drained into the Interface. This why some characters seem colorful whereas the majority are dull and deprived of life. Those that still adhere to nature seem to not be transcended into the fake beyond, as animals have color and animals in the Interface seem dead (the Octopus Chef was lifeless in the Interface after his soul was ripped apart by KAMI), as well as those who adhere to living, like Henrik. The majority have opted into the Interface, whereas some stay behind, like Mischief, the Octopus Chef, and Henrik. KAMI is portrayed as God because it holds the Interface and all CE within it. Mischief is a disfigurement of CE that acts like a demon who feeds off CE but doesn't move to get it; instead he scavenges. But all the CE Mischief acquires is held within. That is why he knows so much about Henrik and (later on) about amphibians, because he has consumed CE relevant to Henrik and amphibians. But he is portrayed as the Devil in contrast to KAMI. They both prey on CE, but Mischief scavenges and uses newfound wisdom whereas KAMI abducts, oppresses, and imprisons.
I said before that KAMI reminded me of Sophia in real life. But also The Interface reminds me of the artificial afterlife in the dystopian game SOMA, and a bit of the premise of the movie Transcendence. Both SOMA and Transcendence describe an AI dystopia that involves humankind transcending its consciousness into the ethereal with the aid of AI, and with AI seemingly taking over its host and thus whatever artificial realities/ transformations are created. This can still be regarded as a warning against an AI dystopia.
In addendum, something even more interesting may be the case for Mr. Greetings, Henrik, and Mischief. It is possible that they all split themselves from a physical body and a spiritual form. If you look at the videos, closely, you'll see that Mr. Greetings' soul (CE) split off during the Philadelphia Experiment whereas his physical body remained and that the Mischief may actually be the spiritual form of Henrik who is the physical form, having split during the Experiment. It is shown that Henrik was found floating in a parachute around the same time Mischief took form. This parachute was also represented when Henrik escaped the hospital with Mischief. This would explain why Greetings is so soulless and lifeless, which led to the creation of KAMI, and why Greetings in the Interface is so different and seems to want it all to end. Because physical Greetings and spiritual Greetings have been different manifestations of the same person, where one created KAMI and another seems to superintend the Interface. This same duopoly could apply to Henrik and Mischief, if the origin stories for their current states begin at the same time with similar conditions.

Henryk was photographing his wife. During this period a nuclear bomb detonated. Mom got sick due to radiation poisoning. The pastor was staring at Henryk because he was not destroyed from the resultant radiation. The daughter even says: "I'm old now, like you should be". Should be is the key phrase here. He stopped aging, whereas the rest of his family died of old age.

Does that mean you think Henryk is powered or made of that static cerebral energy because of the fact he is immortal? I also think he uses his abilities in a positive way. Henryk enjoys art and creativity and color. Kami sees 2 colors and seems to have power used negatively to control and destroy. Henryk might have not achieved his potential because of symbolism in his painting that shows his face blocked by an apple that almost shows his true self. Mischief is either related to him, shared the same experience, or possibly is another version of him and helps him by giving him purpose. I really think that this Henryk will unlock greater power OR use his existing power to get rid of KAMI which is a soulless being that reads the world in binary and controls everything. I just hope Henryk saves the world from this mindset and meets his family again.

Almost. I think he was the photographer at Operation Tumbler Snapper, getting pictures of nuclear tests. They use basically the real photo. Not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet, but the picture of the explosion at around 15:06 is a picture taken by Harold Edgerton of a nuclear explosion using his rapatronic camera (high-speed camera capable of capturing an image with an exposure time as brief as 10 nanoseconds). Basically, it's a picture of a nuclear explosion the very instant it's detonated. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but I thought it was interesting that this image was used.

    • @JRexRegis
      @JRexRegis 5 років тому +50

for anyone curious, here's why it looks how it looks, instead of like a normal explosion, btw:
as you said, the exposure was incredibly brief, but the explosion was impossibly bright, so even though almost no time passed, there were still enough photons from the explosion to completely darken the surroundings.
the weird bubble shape you can see in the image isn't the shockwave, but the air that's been converted into highly energized plasma by the explosion in the centre
and the strange "legs" you can see are the support beams for the structure the bomb was placed upon, which were made of metal, and therefore better at conducting heat, which means they ionized a few nanoseconds quicker than the rest of the surrounding air.

I think "cerebral electricity" is the creative energy of mankind. The Philadelphia Experiment somehow awoke this cerebral electricity, which was so powerful it fused most of the shipmen into the steel hulls of the ship. But not Mischief. He was likely at the center of the explosion, destroying his human body but giving him boundless creative energy, perfectly represented by him being a shapeshifter, or a god of creative energy.
The experiment had long-lasting results. Things of human imagination, such as demons, ghosts and monsters, where given real life from the cerebral energy. The Ghost was one such construct. The Ghost, however, was no monster (like Mischief and the Octopus) and in fact saved and raised a little girl. This will be more important in a bit.
Over time, the release of cerebral energy had drastically negative consequences. With all of humanity's imagination out in the open, most people instead turned to soulless robots, failing to see any more point in creative endeavors. The ghosts/demons/monsters just became toys for children to be played around with. Greetings Robotics (and Mr. Greetings, the most cold, rational, uncreative person imaginable) decided to stamp out any being that was able to harness the unlimited potential in raw creative energy... other than his own KAMI, of course. KAMI represents the total destruction of mankind's creative spirit, how technology is making us into soulless drones and tearing those that they see as "monsters" or "creative freaks" away from society (such as The Ghost). It also shows how this killing of creativity has made KAMI (big tech) a defacto all-powerful, always-watching goddess.
Henryk was just a photographer (a creative) who eventually realized that the world's creative energy had become a real, physical thing and that it was killing society. He "broke free" of the lull most others had fallen into and made himself immortal through the cerebral energy (which he somehow has limited control of as evidenced by his 'joke' in episode 10), desperate to return things to the way they were before the experiment (his obstacle). Only when that obstacle is removed and the world is reverted will he finally rest in peace to join his daughter and wife. But in the recent years he had become totally hopeless and unmotivated that that goal would ever be realized.
Finally, I think the most important takeaway is that I think UMAMI is making his work analogous to the way some creatives feel in the modern age - totally unappreciated by the majority of the populace and existentially threatened by big tech censorship and the automation that their robots offer.

    Interesting fact :
The painting with the man in a blue suit with an apple covering his face partly is an actual painting. It was painted by the surrealist artist René Magritte and it is called „The Son of Man”.
René painting this painting as a self portrait. This is what he himself said about the painting :
„At least it hides the face partly well, so you have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of the person. It's something that happens constantly. Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present.”

We can also play with the very form of the name. niebie-SKI ("Ski" (also "Sky" in other regions) is a formative adjective, from the Proto-Slavic "ьskъ", which is defined in the denote possession. place of origin.) So niebieski is literally guy from heaven. Although it's probably overinterpretation ;)

I’m sure this is in the comments somewhere, but Kami is not only a spirit in Japanese culture, but also an inherent energy that exists in all things human and object alike. So that adds an interesting tone to this entire story. Kami is literally eating energy out of everything, eating the kami or life force.

    • @daniel4647
      @daniel4647 5 років тому +12

Or it's the life force transforming into something new, evolving, becoming more complex. Personally I'm sure they used the term Kami instead of God exactly for this reason. Western people like myself have very odd ideas about god and often strong emotional reactions to the word, very few think of it as a universal thing and many see it as something specific to humans, and even go as far as imagining the image of a bearded guy sitting on a cloud. Very few considers it to be something that we've haven't scientifically pinned down yet, like consciousness. Us humans are quick to assume that in order to be conscious you must be human or human like, or at the very least "alive", but this is not necessarily the case as we're slowly learning. It might very well be like you say, consciousness or some form of universal life force, whatever you wanna call it, could be an underlying law of nature, a source of all matter/energy present in all things. I have no doubt that if science discovered god/Kami it would be used to improve a machine, and that might very well be what we're doing with A.I.

The kanji on the back of her neck, as well as her name is referring to God, or Gods. With this in mind it gives the energy an ethereal sense of it being everywhere and "showing itself" to the scientists just as God shows itself to a prophet. Also, there are many stories of Gods walking among men, but only see the world in black and white.

Fun fact: Spagettification is what it happens to something entering the eclipse horizon of a black hole; also how light is thought to travel. Basically, infinite mass stretched infinitly. Like a never ending piece of spagetti. And yes, this is an actual scientific term.
Edit: Also of note, the likelyhood of Mischief and Henryk being one and the same is slim, considering the explosion seen in Henryk's glasses is clearly a nuclear one, and the first ever nuke detonation (Project: Trinity) occured in 1945, whereas the Philadelphia Experiment took place (supposedly) in late 1943. If the nuclear explosion is what changed Henryk, his change took place after Mischief's transformation. I believe that Henryk's wife died due to radiation sickness (just a hunch), which she was exposed to when her husband was photographing these tests, which is why the pastor "just stared at" Henryk the entire duration of the funeral. He either blames Henryk or is trying to understand how she succumbed to the poisoning while Henryk did not. Just spitballing here really, since obviously no one knows save for Umami.

It happens before the event horizon and only with smaller black holes, not those above a certain size, specifically when there is a very fast transition from a weak to a much stronger gravimetric effect. Also, it's clear from the use context that he's probably referring to a wormhole... as for light it's well known to travel as a wave in the electroweak field w/o mass, perhaps your thinking of matter in the BEC state?

I think "Cerebral Energy" in this universe partially both represents creativity and life in this universe. It was always there, and even though it is said that it "Presented itself" humanity found it through experimentation. This implies that humanity was on a course to finding this cerebral electricity from the beginning, leading me to believe that the cerebral electricity is what animates complex life forms in the first place. Cerebral electricity is the driving force of life and all of the endeavors taken by humanity, and it was only a matter of time before Humanity found its creator and animator. I also find it interesting that Henryk was a war photographer, (The photo of the explosion was a recreation of a real explosion taken of an atomic weapon test.) and photos are often seen artistically as moments frozen in time, and Henryk himself is frozen in time, just like his explosion. Maybe the reason that Henryk's expression of his Cerebral Energy was different than Mischief's is mainly because of Henryk's creative energy being expressed differently in normal life. Maybe Mischief was a more erratic creative type even before being exposed to this acausal energy, and it simply unlocked his real creative potential, the same way Henryk was frozen in time, just like his photographs. I think the world of Interface is dominated by this "Greetings Robotics" corporation with the main goal of showing how Capitalism and the system itself drains humanity of its life giving creative, "cerebral" electricity, repurposing it, and using it for profit. Notice that Greetings Robotics is partnered with the UN, and how the UN exists to perpetuate the global hegemony of the mainstream liberal framework of Capitalism, and in turn drain humanity of its creative energy.

There seems to be alot of symbology. The air ship with its massive brain collecting the static data (souls maybe?) from Kami in one scene. The shape shifting nature and trickster/joker type characterisation of Mischief, the offering of the apple and his ability to absorb the data also. The octopus battling Kami, almost like the Leviathan and Jesus with God (the airship) killing Leviathan after it pins Kami to the cross. It seems like a projection of the story of the end times in the Bible but, that by the majority belief in these stories they are be manifested through technology. Even the use of early conspiratorial theory as a birthing of the trickster.
I think Henryk is in an ambiguous, almost catatonic state of mind and being a war photographer saw it all coming. Stumped by his own inability to do or say anything about any of it but just watch it all take place, a symbol of the futility of human existence.

there's a few things i've noticed in the subtitles, I'm not 100% sure if they are just mistakes but I think they're intentional: in the second episode when Mischief says "I'm not going to hurt you" the sentence doesn't appear in the subtitles, maybe this indicates a lie. In the sixth episode when Mischief said he left earth behind the subtitles instead say he left earth as he knew it behind and what I found really interesting is that when Henryk's daughter says she was too young to understand back then the word satan is hidden in the subtitles "undersatand" I think this means that Henryk is the opposite of Kami since she has taken the role of god. Also when Mischief says regular exercise can change the DNA the subtitles use the word "exersize" instead but that might very well just be a typo.

Also notice how Mischief presents Henryk with an apple, similar to the forbidden fruit in the garden of eve, presented to humans by sin. Mischief says "the truth will set you free" similar to how the fruit grants knowledge of good and evil. Mischief is very obviously a representation of Satan and sin. The question is, in this show, is Satan the good guy or the bad guy? I think it's interesting how Kami, or "God" sees the world in black and white, good and bad, while Mischief may seem evil because he's satan, but he gives Henryk knowledge and lets him see his granddaughter.

I think what Mischief is talking about when he talks about not being able to feel desires is in response to his own. After the instance that teleported the ship, he became so powerful as a raw manifestation of the cerebral electricity mentioned in the series that his consciousness expanded beyond something as paltry and mortal as desire. Henryk on the other hand is still infantile in the expansion of power, at a cosmically low level of immortality/eternal youth. He hasn't evolved (I tried to write expanded there but my phone autocorrected and honestly it fits) to the point that mortal things are outside his reach. Mischief laments his current form and position in the power structure, and like an adult lamenting over "the good ol' days" wishes to experience the boundaries of being a mortal again. That's what the octopus is referring to when he basically calls Mischief a parasite. Not because Mischief needs Henryk to survive. No doubt a being like Mischief could survive infinitely unless threatened by a more powerful entity like Ghost (if indeed it has any power of its own remaining) or K.A.M.I. No, Mischief requires Henryk in order to LIVE. To once again experience things from the limited, safe scope of being mortal.
If this is the case, then this series provides something that I frankly love but rarely get to see: the curse of things that people want. The primary instance of what I'm talking about here that I know about is The Picture of Dorian Gray. Dorian wishes for something that, if offered, your average person would accept without much thought of the consequences. He feels these effects firsthand as he lives for centuries, the painting of him aging in his stead. He outlives any and all relatives and love interests, eventually removing himself from his own family tree. He turns to liquor, drugs, and loose women to attempt to fill the void but nothing works. The greed and pride of youth blinded him to the full consequences of living forever, and it is in his waning days that he wishes for nothing but the embrace of death. He realizes that he does in fact have this power, and destroys the picture that has been tarnished by age as he should have been, effectively killing himself.
It is my belief that Mischief is in the same boat as our friend Dorian. Like the man in the picture, at the end of his last life he was given what many at least ponder the possibility of: to experience the universe outside the scope of mortals. He gained as much, but the power and understanding came at the cost of self as we understand it. There is nowhere to strive to, he's at the top of what can exist in our universe, and any urgency has been erased from him, since his apotheosis was taken from him. Anything he could ever want to see or do is within his grasp, yet in doing so now where it's so easy would not provide any satisfaction, so his only desire, as it is the only thing left that he can't accomplish on his own is to be mortal again and embrace its restrictions with a true appreciation for them.
That's just what the information provided to me at this point says. There could be episodes later on that turn this perspective on its ear, but given our current information that's the state of affairs in regards to Mischief
