I clicked on this video not expecting it to hold my interest for very long, but now 19 minutes later I've got to say that was really fantastic and interesting.
I read "The Orchid Thief" back in the day - this feels like an excellent update to that story. That sense of obsession, and this last wilderness of Florida that captivates people - it's neat to see that it's still there, still drawing people in.
To me it seems like a story that’s been retold over and over in the human story. We should all be blessed enough to find an obsession that leads each of us to our own version of this story

Very beautiful such a shame people don’t treat the Forrest with respect and leave it alone to flourish and evolve into something more than what it is now
I've been saying the giant sphinx was too big for the nectar stem of Dendrophylax lendenii for years. I have photographed orchids in the Fakahatchee for 15 years but long before that I was into moths and butterflies. This discovery is awesome! I've always said it's likely the ghost has a few pollinator species fluttering around out there.
@@minervaminavera2347 In my experience any moth with a long enough proboscis will feed on a ghost when they get a chance... so any silk moth, smaller sphinx species, geometers, ect.
Can you imagine how excited Charles Darwin would be about this?,,how cool it would be to bring him back, and let him play with all the new technology,to see the things he predicted unfold on a screen in front of him!👌
I've heard a couple ghost stories about these orchids. I can kind of remember one story where the guy bribes another guy to take him to the secret location, and when he gets there the guy leaves him and takes off. Slowly, things start emerging from around the ghost orchids.
I ran into a panther and her Cubs on the corkscrew trail. Fwc came out and put trail cameras everywhere trying to get a glimpse of an animal that is on the brink of extinction.
Excellent production value. This is a great lesson on the scientific method, and how the answers often bring even more questions. The giant sphinx month a pollen robber? I guess intuitive thought gave its probiscis too much cred. Thank you for demonstrating that there is much more to our world when observing it through an acutely sensitive lens.
1st yet I watched the whole video and it's awesome to know about the pollination of this rare beautiful flower "Ghost Orchid". ❤️ Gonna edit the comment after completing the whole video. 🔥 #edited
Excelente trabajo e interesante me encanta la historia de la orquidea fantasmas Saludos desde Costa Rica...Greetings🙋🏻♂️... Might be that the Moth is also responsible of pollination of many specific orchid flowers in Costa Rica and one RUBIACEAE called Osa Pulchra😍
Alot of orchid hobbyist have tried growing this. Successful for a couple of years and then only to see it wither away. This dendrophylax is only found in a certain part of Florida and nowhere else. Hobbyist can successfully pollinate it and get seeds to grow but it's keeping the plant alive in cultivation.
The Ghost Orchid is also one of Great Britain's rarest plants but my question is, what native insect could pollinate it over here? We do have some fairly large moths here in Britain - but nothing like the giant moths seen here in this doc...
There is the most difficult part of world where even sunlight can't reach but the photographer reaches there. Huge respect and love for photographers.

I ended up wanting it to go on longer than it did actually
19 minutes? Whoa! I forgot.
Stories with this kind of passion invigorate me!

Me too, loved the book, loved this film.
Thank you for mentioning the book, as I read it some time ago and found it fascinating. This story is an incredible continuation.

National Geographic level of quality content. Congratulation on your discovery and success!
Sometimes I feel like the pollination of the ghost orchid is a metaphor for my love life.
Underrated comment 😂
Sometimes i wonder why i can't plants.
Yeah I think anytime a flower has 12 inches going into it... it's getting something, at least, out of the deal! 😏

“One of the most unexplored places in North America”
I don't know which is more exciting about this documentary - the science or the photography. I love this vid.
As an orchid enthusiast, I found this video to be fascinating, and informative. Too bad it's so short. I want more!

The passion these people have is beautiful.
Would love to hear even one of the stories these guys have from living in the swamp
I liked how this was just as much about their journey as it was about the actual goal
There was a saying
That is so true! Wouldn't it be cool if more animal documentaries had this kind of narration? They go through a lot filming animals!!
Amazing story. Truly amazing. I don't understand why someone would downvote such an intriguing, captivating story.
The imagery in this documentary is seriously something else... who else wants to run away into that swamp!?
Only if I'm wearing full wet suit, goggles, and am in an armour-plated boat - yes, I am a wuss! :-D
Seeker has been absolutely spoiling us lately with these videos.
I am an orchid enthusiast and this documentary is mind blowing!
These guys literally accomplished the most difficult achievement I've ever seen
This is an amazing documentary! Would definitely love to see more like this.
It’s the Obsession quote for me.

Would you share your hypothesis on what other moths would pollinate this orchid?

Shadow witch!
Reminds me of that crazy movie Adaptation. Great film
I was thinking the same thing !
The book orchid thief is about the ghost orchid and it takes place where they were filming

An awesome video capturing the arduous journey of testing the hypothesis that the Giant Sphinx moth is the only Ghost Orchid pollinator!
these guys are real legends in the making.... when passions are focused to creative pursuits = incredible
What a beautiful story.
What an amazing story in both the orchid and in the perseverance of the team. Great stuff! 👍😁
This kind of discovery / documentary never fails to amaze me and making me proud and emotional.
Only if people stops cutting trees, we could probably see more of these enigmatic life forms.
@4:42. That frog is so BOSS.
Charles Darwin would be proud of you! Well done!
Love what you do here, Seeker
Thank you for giving us new stories
I ran into a panther and her Cubs on the corkscrew trail. Fwc came out and put trail cameras everywhere trying to get a glimpse of an animal that is on the brink of extinction.
Probably the best video I watched on UA-cam.
