How To Marble With Nail Polish

Learn to marble using dollar store nail polish! This is a beautiful way to turn a vase into a handmade gift. And it's so easy! We'll show you how.
We just discovered how fun and easy marbling is. You simply drizzle paints onto water and drag items through the paint. What kind of paint you ask? Well, we tried it with nail polish from the dollar store and got gorgeous results!
How To Marble With Nail Polish
Materials & Tools
Ceramic vase, white (So the marbled colors show!)
Disposable plastic container (You need this to be deep enough to dip half your vase.)
Nail polish, various colors and gold
Wooden craft sticks
Toothpicks
Paper towels
Steps
1. Fill The Tub With Water
Fill a plastic tub with tap water. Hold your vase up to the side of the water to make sure it is deep enough. You want to be able to dip the vase into the water without touching the bottom of the tub.
2. Do A Test Run
We did a few test runs to get a feel for how much paint to drip, how much to swirl, and how fast to work. Drizzle one color of nail polish onto the water. Drizzle a second color. Then drizzle a little gold. We limited our colors to three at a time so the colors wouldn't look muddy.
3. Swirl The Paint
Using a toothpick, make swirling motions in the paint two or three times. You don't want to mix the colors together too much. Just drag the colors by each other.
4. Test With A Craft Stick
Test the colors by dipping a craft stick into the tub. Try dipping straight in and straight out. This worked best for us.
5. Clean The Water
To clean the water before your next set of colors, drag a paper towel through the water. It will pick up any unused colors floating on the surface.
6. Drizzle Paints On Water
To marble the vase, drizzle the colors one by one onto the water surface.
7. Swirl With A Toothpick
Use a toothpick to swirl the colors together.
8. Dip Your Vase
Hold the vase by the top lip and dunk it into the water. Be careful not to touch the bottom of the tub. Pull the vase straight out. Turn upside down to dry.
We love to marble with nail polish! Have you ever tried this? Did you use nail polish? If you have any tips or tricks to share, leave us a comment!
Happy Crafting,
Jennifer and Kitty

Thanks Paula!

try dipping whatever you're dipping in at an angle and use your stick to clear all the nail polish away from the object before you pull it out and if you use warm water the nail polish will keep from drying too quick cold water makes fingernail polish dry faster
Ooh wonderful tips!! Thanks for sharing! J&K
Ty for the tip!
OMGoodness! I never imagined such an effect could be achieved so easily and inexpensively. Not one to normally take up this type craft project, I almost skipped over this video. I’m so glad I didn’t. I can’t wait to try this. It’s beautiful & it looks like great fun. Thanks for the great ideas you give us! Smiles & hugs from Texas✨💖✨
This is a really fun and easy one! We got the nail polish at Dollar Tree, so it was cheap too! Lol.
Smiles & Hugs,

I love this,I have tried acrylic Dutch pour, but it takes so long for the canvas to dry..not good when you have to use your lounge as the craft room too. This looks so much simpler and less drying time.thank you for sharing ❤️
So glad we could help!
J&K
hi, thanks for sharing, i was thinking about trying this on a clay pot. :-)

J&K

Amazing thanks
Thanks to you Jayna!
Very nice creation.
Thanks!
I don’t think warm water was mentioned in the video. Also be sure you are either in a big room or have some kind of ventilation.
Great tips Barbara! Thanks for sharing!

Hi that looks amazing I’ve tried and I end up with lumpy bits in places how do I stop this from happening please
So sorry you got lumpy bits. Maybe try a different brand of nail polish. Also, working faster can help. Let us know how it turns out.

I've done this about tree Christmas' ago for gifts
How cool! What did you marble?
Jennifer & Kitty
To make more than 1 item can you use the same water. Add more polish. Or need to start all over again? Ty
You can reuse the same water. Just clean the water by dragging a paper towel through it. Here are the written instructions on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/diy-marbling-how-to-marble-with-nail-polish/
Hope that helps!
J&K
Hi, this looks great! How long does it take for the vase to dry? Thanks
Hi Emma, The nail polish dries very quickly, maybe ten minutes.
Cheers,
Jennifer & Kitty

Is it better to use hot water or cold water? Because I try to use warm and not so good water and why the results are still over
Great question! We didn't experiment with different temperatures, but that's a neat idea! This is a good project to do different tests to see what works best for you.
Here's the written how-to on our blog:

Do you need to use special nail polish? I bought the cheapest stuff I could find and it didn't work at all. It just sank to the bottom and some colour spread all over the surface. When I dipped various materials in (glass, wood, ceramic, paper) there wasn't much transfer.
Sorry that happened April. Our nail polish came from Dollar Tree. So it was pretty cheap. We had some of the polish sink to the bottom and found it best to work fast. The nail polish dries quickly on the surface of the water, but it needs to be still wet to adhere to any dipped objects.
J&K
If you drop the polish onto the water from a height it’s more likely to sink....
So try dropping it onto the water closer to the surface
Great tip Kim Kim! Thanks!

Good afternoon I have a question I hydro dip a tumbler I don’t like it can it be removed with something
Hmmm...we are really not sure. Maybe you can test a similar material item and try nail polish remover to remove it.
Jennifer & Kitty
I am thinking of doing something like this on my kitchen cupboard cupboard knobs, will it work the same on wood?
We're not sure if it would work on wood. You could test it on something wooden from the Dollar Store. Let us know if it works.
J&K
@@TheONeilSisters it worked on the stir stick you used as a test.
Oh great point!!! Thanks!
J&K
if i want to do paint and a paper instead does it have to be warm water as well?
Great question! We think the warm water helps, but we haven't tried with paper. You could try it both ways and let us know how it turns out!
J&K
Very nice!!! ❤️
Sorry, what was the effect called?
It is called Suminagashi or Paper Marbling.
J&K
@@TheONeilSisters Thank you!
You are welcome!
Can you wash them in the dishwasher?
We wouldn't recommend that.
Jennifer & Kitty
How do you dispose of the water?
Great question Monica! We dragged paper towels thru the water to pick up the nail polish, then poured the water that was leftover out in the yard (in a dirt area).
J&K
Can I do this on a small unpainted glass jar?
Hi Gail, We haven't tried this on glass but it should work! Let us know how it turns out.
Cheers,
Jennifer & Kitty
I learned the hard way not to use a foam cup as a container for the water and nail polish . It eats a hole through the cup.
Good tip! Thanks for sharing!
J&K
Are these safe to wash? What about the dishwasher? 🤔
We haven't tested them for in the dishwasher. If you try it, please let us know the results.
J&K
Hey :)
How to seal it?
Greetings
Hi Tatjana, We didn't seal ours, but you could use a clear spray sealer. Hope that helps!
Jennifer & Kitty
Is this washable?
Great question Amya! Yes. The nail polish is enamel and once it's dried it is washable!
J&K
Doesn’t wirk
Sorry you are having trouble Haidyn. How an we help?
