      I though exactly the same. The first spell he was quick, strong and always gave everything for the team, I remember him, on a hattrick, through in goal, squaring the ball to Kuyt, an unbelievable player. The second spell the pace was going but the aggression and hunger had not. He had an individual training routine because of his knee, which I think we should've done something similar with Sturridge. That helped him and he burst on, most times from the bench and made an instant impact, he'll always be remembered for that Semi-final against City and the game against Barca.

      As a Blackburn fan I will second that. When he left us for you we really struggled. Some of the goals he scored for us were out of this world. The one against Portsmouth one of my favourite ever goals.

      I really liked Bellamy as a player..Shame he never really fitted into Rafa's tactics but a highly dangerous player..I was made up when we signed him tbh..I thought he was electric at Man City

    • @mikemackay994
      @mikemackay994 4 роки тому +2

      Simon Forrest I think his only thing that really held him back after listening to this was maybe his ability to integrate properly. And for people to understand his “problems” and his reaction to them. Because he was certainly a great wee player. Always trying, wore his heart on his sleeve, and if given half a sniff at goal, he usually delivered. I just genuinely hope he finds what he’s looking for.

    • @mikemackay994
      @mikemackay994 4 роки тому +1

      Simon Forrest your Damn right. I’d kind of forgotten how bad Rafa was for that until your comment. Then I remembered him putting Pepe Reina upfront against Kaiserslautern pre-season and he missed a sitter!. But I agree, Rafa “tinkered” a lot with his lineups (played 99 games consecutively, each time with a different eleven) and player positions. For a player like Bellamy it wouldn’t of helped at all.

    When Craig moved to Man City under Mark Hughes and he had to play on the left Bellamy was World Class. I didnt see it in him before. But he became humble and really put in the work on the pitch. There was a period where I was looking at it and he was almost the best player on the pitch. Defensively and Offensively he was electric. On that Left sided cutting in on his right mixed with his constant pressing. Great period. Just took few years of mental maturity to get there.

    Thanks so much for posting something like this. Really resonated with me. I couldn't handle the pressure as a kid, I was at a Championship club's academy and the pressure was immense. From myself, from the manager, from not wanting to let my parents/teammates down. Not sure how a lot of these players have the mental resilience to carry on! I was given a contract when I was 8. The pressure started to affect me when I was 9 or 10 and I ended up quitting when I was 12. I was living and breathing football 24/7 from the age of 6 to 12. From 12 to 14 I didn't even watch a football match I had so much resentment towards it. Nowadays I love the game again, but playing for fun and watching for the beauty of the game, the atmospheres and the technical aspects.

    I was 2 years below Craig in Rumney High. It was a very tough school surrounded by all of East Cardiff's council estates. He's not joking here when he says that every five a side or street game there would be fighting. Guaranteed. In my experience that breeds a mentality that's difficult to get out of and in later life it can effect your interactions in a detremental way if you don't deal with it. I have alot of respect for the honesty and humility he showed here.

    As a Blackburn fan I can say although he was only with us for one season, he was absolutely world class for us. In 2004-05 we finished 15th 9 points off relegation, that summer we signed Bellamy and although he missed the first couple of months with injury he ended up with 17 goals, we finished 5 points off a Champions League place and got to the semi-finals of the cup. Even though he moved to Liverpool in the following summer he kickstarted a period of European football and top-half finishes for us, I absolutely loved him during his time at Ewood.

    Found this an immensely enjoyable and insightful watch. Craig Bellamy comes across really well here. His thoughts around coaching are interesting, particularly how he tailors his approach to fit individuals. He also seems to have much better communication skills than he's ever been given credit for. Did very well for my club (Liverpool) in two spells and was a great player for Wales. A bit of a shame that he got to play in tournaments with the later Welsh crop, but a great career nonetheless.

    This is one of the most helpful and feel good videos I've come across in recent weeks, Craig Bellamy always played the villain....very very well I have to say and on top of that he was a premiership great.
    Really insightful to hear Craig's journey, his ups, his downs and his experiences, I think during this covid encounter its given people a lot of time to reflect on what's important....Friends, Family and Your own Health and Wellbeing...
    I grew up with Craig Bellamy on the TV, you always thought [As he eludes too] he was tough as old boots, unbreakable and out to prove something, to hear the story behind those traits and life choices, makes him more endearing, will help people realise more about players, that's it's not all sweetness and light once they end there careers and that they are making the same mistakes as us, yet paying heavier prices due to there fame and perceived persona.....,break it all down they are human.
    The generation of pundits and footballers on TV are part of my childhood growing up, it's great to see CB overcoming obstacles that we all face yet opening up to maybe help others understand it's ok to not be ok.
    His experiences of course I can relate too, i can relate to decisions I have made that weren't mine but trusted, realisations on traits etc but from his position plus his vulnerability is a breath of fresh air and should be applauded 👏
    Craig you're a really nice guy
    Great Footballer
    Whether you thought it or not fans feared you, people respected you and loved what you brought to the game
    I never knew [Why would I!! Lol] you were actually a genuine nice guy
    The coaching and ethos sounds you described next level and can only help younger players....great work buddy
    I'm 41 and realised a lot the last few years, I think it would of come to me eventually but covid has accelerated some massive personal growth, but... having stories like this available to listen too is really helpful and insightful.
    Hopefully that helped CB massively, I'm sure people will listen, empathise, relate and surprised that little tough resolute fiery at times CB has had these struggles and hopeully encourage more footballers to do this kind of thing, good for the game, makes people understand behind the money, exposure and elite sport bring the same issues we face on a daily basis plus many more post career.
    Really glad Craig is managing himself and has direction in life etc
    Thanks for being so open.
    Ps....I couldn't stop thinking he looks like a young Ben Affleck 😁 Could just be me 👍

    Very interesting discussion and commentary on football culture. I think that the issues raised are common among most if not all sports and the importance of good coaching and mentoring at youth level are underlined here. Bellamy has the self-awareness to reflect on his own experiences and to learn the lessons and put them in place so that the next generations of footballers will benefit.

    Being from the States I can only imagine the pressure on the players knowing how passionate England is about football. They have absolutely no margin for error as far as just being human. To hear that they wonder if they actually enjoyed playing is very telling.

    I always thought Bellamy was an incredible player, quick, aggressive, creating space/goals. But lacked consistency through injurys. And I glad he opened up about mental health, depression/anxiety, his behaviour makes sense now which I think media and public misunderstood.

    I always liked Bellamy despite all the hate he got as a player. Always seemed like an intelligent no nonsense guy who doesn’t suffer fools. Yes he was mouthy on the pitch but it’s a skill as a striker knowing how to wind up defenders and get under their skin. He was also a great and underrated player.

      @MrHarlinq yeah I totally agree with you! I didn't mean it like that. I just meant it's a privileged situation to be in to be earning as much as professional footballers earn. Although money does not equate to happiness, there are people that earn minimum wage whilst supporting families and dealing with mental health problems
