      Yeah, my thoughts...
From our point of view, the whole continent is North America and there is another one, called South America. - All - citizens of - all - countries in both continents are or should be called Americans. The same as all Frenchs and Germans are Europeans as well. But you US guys claim/name yourself as the Americans, because you have named your country United States of America.
So not to mix you up with Canadians, Mexicans or Brazilians, we call you 'US-Americans' (in news etc.), if we mean all of a specific continent we say North or South Americans. And people of all Americas are the Americans, as simple as that.
So this a simple example, how you can represent yourself as ignorant and/or overbearing against the rest of the world.

@@Thurgosh_OG As far as I'm aware, most of the rest of the world refers to the continent as America, further divided into North, South, and Central America to distiguish the areas. I do know that some people from American countries dislike the "South American" label as it has connotations of being a lesser version of the US or subservient to them.

Since the man in the video works in the Netherlands, here is some information about sick leave. It is true, like you came up with, some people take advantage of the sick leave system. Most collective work agreements know a 'waiting day'. This means you don't get paid for your 1st or first 2 sick days to prevent the monday hangover 'sickness' 😉. Unless you were sick from the same issue within 4 weeks prior. This sucks for women who suffer from monthly cycli headaches. They are the same issue, but many times júst out of the 4 weeks period 😁 prior. No need to go to family dokter for a note, they are busy as it is already. If sick longer you will receive an appointment to go to the company docter who is not employed by the company, but through is a collective arrangement. This docter will asses if you are, or not and for how long you are granted sick leave. Possibly followed by a next appointment in 2 or more weeks. You do have to call in sick at your employer on day 1 before your workday would start. Or earlier (evening before if possible of course) if there has to be made arrangements to fill your place at work. Like shifts or in a store. First 2 years of sickness, in case long term, employer pays 170% wages, devided over those years, usually 100% 1st year, 70% 2nd year. May have changed by now in favor of company costs. After 2 years, social security kicks in with unemployment benefits. After assesment of course. That may be a percentage of your earnings, because you may be able to work part of the hours you did before. This is why it is called social security. Not socialist, but social. Common mistake made by Americans to mix those two up.

Hi Ryan, just to inform you on "sick leave". There are - of course - people that try to take advantage of this regulation, but usually, at least in Germany, your employer can make you go to see a doctor, who than will state if you are sick or not. You can´t just stay home and say you are sick. Most employers accept up to three days without a sick leave by a doctor.

    • @Moribax85
      @Moribax85 Рік тому +13

Similar here in Italy: only your family doctor (or the ER) can issue a sick leave certification, and your company can send a doctor to your house to check on you, if you're not home when he comes by (without justification, if you're in the hospital for an exam you're justified) or he finds that you're not sick at all, that's ground for contract termination.
Also sick leave is paid at 50% of your average daily pay for the first 20 days, 66% for successive days, for up to 180 days per solar year.

Gotta add to that: Here in Germany you can be sick as long as your doctor says you are. There is a law that prevents you for being fired while being sick or pregnant. During the first six weeks of an ongoing sickness you get full pay by your employer, after that you still count as employed ( and can go back after you recover), but the medical social system pays you about 70% of your original wages in your employers stead. That prevents the employe from not getting money and the employer from paying for possible years of sickness without return.

If an employer believes that someone is abusing the 3 days leeway to get a doctors note, they can ask for that on the first day, it's legal (in Germany). Even if all other employees only have to have a note on the 3rd day, but that does require arguments. So, if a company just wants to bully someone out of the job, because they can't fire him, it is an option to ask for a doctors note on the first day - but the employee can go to court to get the 3 days like everyone else, except if the company can prove that there is evidence of the said person to abuse the leeway rule. It's not always easy either way and there can always be people trying to abuse the system, but most people don't. As a citizen of Austria, I feel very safe and protected by the law. If I get sick, a short message to the manager is generally sufficient, followed later by a sick note, which can be submitted within a few days. But after that you can recover from your illness undisturbed for weeks. The company is not allowed to fire you or disturb you during your illness. Everything is covered by state insurance. Of course it depends on what role you fill in the company and what needs to be regulated during your absence, but it works perfectly.

The same goes goes for the man who had the heart attack and was afraid to call the ambulance , because it would otherwise be too expensive . It`s unbelievable in any case he was sensible and didn`t ride his bike, even if it was only ten minutes away from the hospital, he could have been dead. Yeah, for me living in Germany, where the health insurance is at the more expensive side (though the employer pays half of it and half is deducted from your income before you receive it). It is still about the same amount for employees as an average american health insurance. And still, people have to choose between going broke or potentially literally dieing despite that, it just goes beyond me how such a system can still exist AND be tolerated by the citizens who believe their country being the greatest in the world. And here in Germany, the germans are the first ones to sniff out even the slightest flaw in anything - and they are not too shy to tell anyone who doesn't run away fast enough.

I used to think that lots of these were just prejudices and clichés but when I met an American group of tourists in Australia I realized for the first time that in comparison to most people I had met so far in my life (from dozens of different countries) the Americans stood out in their lack of knowledge about the rest of the world and in their strong believe in how right they were about certain things in the world that were very obviously not true. The way they perceived certain things and interpreted them was also somehow totally different from everyone else's. I see that in many of your videos too, the conclusion you draw are somewhat off sometimes, in a way only Americans could be off ( in a sympathetic naiv but also odd kind of way )
One thing was that they asked me where I was from and I said Switzerland. Some of them told me then that they had already been there. I said great, how did you like it and what places did they visit. They said Stockholm. I get that Europe has many small countries and Switzerland is tiny but if you have been to (Switzerland? Sweden?) you ought to know a little bit better...? I went to the hospital for bad vertigo that wasn’t going away after a good couple of hours. It was affecting my speech. It was affecting it so bad my coworkers thought I was having a stroke and told me to go straight to the ER. So I did.
After a 4 hour wait to get back into a room, the doctor saw me, and did two simple tests: follow my finger with your eyes and repeat these couple of words to me. I passed with flying colors. She looked in my ears and found I had fluid in my ears…with a few bits of ear wax. So she got someone to clean my ears and gave me a bag of saline for good measure to make sure I was hydrated before I was released.
If I didn’t have insurance, that visit would have cost me $15,000. FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS to follow a finger with my eyes, repeat a few words, a bag of saline and a bit of water flushed through my ear. With insurance? I still had to pay over $3,000 out of my pocket.
I went to the doctor for a cough a few months ago. In network. I still walked out of there paying $175. I had gone to the little clinic at king Soopers a few days before for a diagnosis of “not sure, but we think it’s just a cold” for another $125. All of it was supposed to be in my network for my insurance so I’d hate to see what it was before I got the bill.

Same for germany, basically. You got 3 days per se (without need for an doctors note), everything above that requires said note.
I'm not really sure how it is in the US, but these notes here are official documents. Not only are they needed for your employer (who just gets to know the time you're out), but also for the Krankenkasse (healthcare provider), who will take over not only the cost of your treatment, but also your payment if you are sick for more than... 6 weeks it is, i guess? It's not 100%, but at least 80% of your income.
So, yeah... you CAN abuse those 3 days (i don't even know if this is by law or just a "general agreement") in a year, but well - 3 days a year barely count, i think. Happens, but it's more or less insignificant. Although, if you abuse the system and it can be proven, you'll risk your job over here also. Same goes if you called in sick, but work another job - you are sick, or you are not. You are allowed everything considered recreational, but no working... ;)

@@ChristianBeckerKapraun The 3 days without a doctors notice in Germany is the maximum allowed by law, however your employer can decide to require a doctors notice even for a single sick day. So it's a risk calculation for your employer: If he allows 3 days without notice, some people might abuse this to take a day or two off. However, if he requires a note on day one, people with small illnesses that usually would be recovered after a day or two (like a headache or tummy-ache) have to go to the doctor who usually puts you on sick leave for the whole week, even if you would be able to return to work after a few days.

When you are sick you go to your local first contact doctor and if they determine that you are actually sick they will oficially issue you what is called an L4. Which is most oftenly either a week or two of sick leave that your employer needs to honor by law. You get payed 80% when you are sick. And sure, if you have a doctor that has beem treating you for the last 20 years you could in theory do a wink-wink for them to give you like a fake sick week but its not advised. In Poland you have unlimited sick days when doctor's note is provided (you go to the doctor and your employer is notified you're out on medical leave for X days, it's called L4, and you don't even have to call your job or anything, although it's polite to do so), but when you're out on sick leave you get 80% of your salary, less if it's lenghty (think couple of months). National Social Insurance Office can control if you are really sick (send an agent to your home for a check up) and you can get In trouble if you're lying (like, you're out for two weeks because of a back injury and they discovery you are actually building a shed). In general it works - because of the lower pay most people don't abuse it, but if you need to take some time to recover you still get paid.

    • @sylviav6900

      Very similar in Germany.
You can be checked, if they have doubt, you will see a salary decrease after 6 weeks of calling in sick straight, but other than that, the sick days are paid and unlimited. On the contrary: the employer even has tu check back with you, if you were sick for many days over the last year and has to offer you a non-mandatory discussion. In that, they'll evaluate together with you (and the workers' counsil, if that's existing in that company and they are not that uncommon), how they can help you to reintegrate yourself into the normal working life again. That goes down to having to work for less days for a couple of months or getting medical advice/counseling. But the employer has no right in enquiring about your actual sickness...
Most employers allow you to use three days without having to show a doctor's attestation even. Also, these days, those confirmations are sent to the employer and the health care insurance automatically (at least, in theory that's digitalized, now). Nevertheless, your boss would still like to know from you that your off and - for planning purpose - for how long approximately. Again, they are not entitled by law, though, to ask für the specific reason/sickness.
And it's illegal to fire people just like that. As an employer, you have to prove very well that the employee is doing something very wrong. And then, the employee can still use the workers' council's help and/or complain in front of the specialised court, who - if in doubt - rather have to take their decision in favour of the employee, not of the employer. And calling out to that court is even for free for employees...

And yes, it depends on which illness you suffer from and how this illness affects your work (alcohol addiction, gambling addiction and the like) It depends on the days off, conversations, etc. One of our former apprentices was always absent on Fridays or Mondays, and situations like this sometimes lead to a contract being canceled during a probationary period.

Yes, there are people who try to use that. But for longer times (more than 2 days in my company) you need a doctors note. And in that it is written what you are allowed to do: leave the bed, the house... and when you need to be seen by a doctor again. There are cases where people are controlled by the insurances or observed by detectives if there are suspicions. But that is rare.

It basically calculates an attendance score (based of the number of times you took sick leave and the duration of the sick periodes in days. If an employee has an unusual high score, HR will go talk to the employee to see if everything is okay. Maybe he's under a lot of pressure, something in his home situation. They want to intervene before it gets problematic. HR gets a lot of flack sometimes like they don't care about their employees (I think that must be a US thing) because here in Belgium. I've worked 3yrs on the service desk of said Payroll company (I like my employer I just dont want to mention too many specifics for my privacy) and dealt with issues our customers had (company HR departments) with our software products. They always had their employees interests at heart. Most of the regular HR personnel are just normal people wanting to do a good job and have no real power in company policy making. The problem is if the top of the company (CEO & board) pass scummy company policies. The people have to follow the policies wether they like to or not. You can argue they [HR] should turn a blind eye sometimes but asking someone to put their job on the line is too tall an ask to be reasonable. But that's just my opinion.

Btw, everybody has to have a well covering enshurance, for 150,- a month, so you don't go broke if you get cancer or a nasty accident.

In the UK we have Statutory Maternity Leave.
This means that a woman who is employed and pregnant is legally entitled to 52 weeks (1 year) of maternity leave, no matter how long they have worked for that employer.

Same here in Germany. Actually, here a mother in the making can first take health related pregnancy leave from the moment she knows about it (by doctors recommendation), but the last few weeks before and after birth are mandatory. And after birth, a mother OR a father cant take paternity leave for at least a year with partial income, and another 2 years without income (so, 3 alltogether) with their jobs waiting for them to return. And if they don't wanna or can't return, they can apply for unemployment money and the paternity leave will be considered working time, but based on the income they had in their last active working job.
Yes, our systems are complicated, but very efficient if you do it right. You just need to inform yourself and be patient with the paperwork, THAT is german bureaucracy at its peak.

I think there are stipulations. As an employee of a local council in Scotland, for example, you have to be employed by the council for at least a year before they will pay maternity leave and you have to make them aware of a pregnancy at a certain number of weeks.

In Australia, if you’re sick and going to be off work for more than two days, you need a doctor’s certificate to say how long you’re expected to be off work, so maybe one week or ten days, whatever the doctor advises.

Cluster headaches are no joke. I've seen a couple of documentaries on the subject. OMFG.
I think the patients were given a flask of Nitrous oxide - an anesthetic gas (a BIG flask like welding gas size). Some people 'grew' their own and risked jail rather than having their head 'explode'?
I think there are injections, nasal sprays and pure oxygen as well (according to google). All this sends the cash register into a frenzy.

The $38K medical bill doesn't shock me. I had a tooth infection and couldn't afford a dentist. The pain was so bad I couldn't stop crying. My whole head felt like it was exploding. After waiting 4 hours to see a doctor in the emergency room, he stood in the doorway and shined a light toward my mouth. I was on the bed where they put me btw. he didn't get within 6 feet of me. Gave me a Tylenol 3 pill, prescribed the weakest antibiotic he could choose (which did nothing after days of taking it) and was in the room for less than three minutes. No scans. No blood work. No anything. The bill was just short of $5K.

Wow, I had a very similar experience to that girl going to the ER for a migraine. I was seen in about an hour, given some shots to stop the headaches, and they let me rest there a bit until the drugs took effect, then checked on me before they let me leave. You know how much that cost me? ZERO!
How is that $34,000 in the US? That's insane!

🇺🇸 here...I get hemiplegic migraines - several times a month since age 26 - which mimic a STROKE. The ONLY time I went to the ER for that was the first time it happened and that was only because it happened twice in the same day at a family gathering and I was forced by my family to go because they were freaking out. The ER staff thought I was having a stroke at 26 because all the symptoms of a stroke were present. That ER bill was nearly $40,000... I had a CT scan, IV fluids, and IV phenergan(for nausea), morphine & fentanyl (for head pain). The rest of the charges were consult & ER fees. They literally charge a big fee EVERY TIME they push a med into the IV line...not for the med itself as that's a seperate charge - just for pushing it into the IV line via a syringe! So yeah... several times a month I sit here at home thinking welp this could be an actual stroke leaving me permanently disabled at best or dead at worst but I'm just going to stay here and see how it plays out because I don't want to end up homeless with unimaginable debts over a complicated migraine! Currently I'm on week 4 of being unable to speak after a hemiplegic migraine but it has always returned to normal within 7 weeks so just waiting it out....if it never returns I suppose I'll just sing or write/type to communicate. 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ I hate the state of healthcare here. It's so fu©ked up.

That's terrible! I'm in the UK, and have had epilepsy for nearly 40 years, since a small child. Countless MRI's, tests, scans, regular neurological check ups and daily medications the whole time. Not a penny! I simply wouldn't be able to live in the US, I could never afford it. I dread to think of the costs. Not to mention other illnesses and a few operations.
I hope you're feeling better since your post, and indeed, in the future.

In Australia its similar to both.
You get like 10-15 days of paid sick leave depending on your contact.
Any more than that you need a doctors note and it’s unpaid.
