As a kid, I used to imagine myself moving to North America or Australia or even Brazil. But now that I'm an adult, I am so grateful to be a European and to live here ! And not just for the beauty and diversity of our continent, also for our levels of education, open values, solidarity, food and cultures. I've been to every European country and each one has something special to offer.
I moved to Australia 38 years ago l have settled here, every thing you need is 40minutes to an hour away it like the USA stread out. I miss Scotland and Europe and stinking hot weather in the "summer " kills me.

@@nieksalomons I am Croatian and Italian. I remember visiting the Amalfi coast with my Italian husband and some American friends. There are many small villages on the Amalfi coast, not just Positano and to get there you have to drive a very narrow winding road quite slowly and it's just the way it is. I remember their comment-we Americans would just make tunnels through these mountains and you could get to any of the little towns in a minute. We just looked at each other and realized there was no way to explain why you just can't destroy the whole mountain to make the drive shorter. And btw, the drive is actually a part of the experience. About the Dubrovnik walls 😂 I guess we could tear them down now since they don't have a purpose anymore. 😊
Bro, a lot of European cathedrals were built for centuries. I'm Czech. I travelled a lot around the whole of Europe and I just must tell you that visit to all the European heritage sites is simply impossible because our lives are too short.
Only one I don't agree with is Monaco. Expensive, overrated, unfriendly people and in general not much you can do or see. There are much better allternatives close by
The different historic building styles evolved due to the weather. In northern Europe you need steep, hard rooftops to protect against rain, hail and to let snow slide off of them. In southern Europe you have flat rooftops one can use for different purposes as the weather is mostly sunny. And the buildings are painted white to repel heat.
You make the roof flat and add another floor at the freed space. Oh, and not just Italy. I always feel like Croatia is a bit of a discount Italy. Not in "it is the less elaborate copy" but as "it is cheaper to travel there". And lots of things that are just beautiful.
Note: The towns and most cities in Europe were built way before cars even existed, so they were built for pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages etc. Many, perhaps even most, are hundreds of years old, and a few even some two thousand years old. Quite mind-blowing for people in the U.S., many of whom have lost touch with the history of their ancestors and the countries they came from. With all the possibilities that the internet is offering, now's the time to go exploring and to reconnect with Europe and the rest of the world! 🌎

Yup, there are a lot of cities here in Spain that were founded by the ancient romans, such as Toletum (currently Toledo), Cartago Nova (Cartagena), Gades (Cádiz) or Valentia Edetanorum (Valencia)

Honestly yeah, I live in Montenegro and our costal cities are similar to Dubrovnik (which is like 3h away by car) and I can go to them in 1 a bit more than an hour of driving
@@commandershepard2490 yeah, sadly in the summer it can be hectic. And water in the sea region isn't for drinking. Depending on your finances Lustica bay and Porto Montenegro are 2 beautiful luxury places in Montenegro to visit. Budva is too crowded during summer, but I could recommend Bar and it's old town, or Ulcinj. They are less known places to international tourists but just as nice. Bar is more of a normal city than a touristy place, it's a big port city. And Ulcinj has nice beaches and is on the border with Albania. There is also Ada Bojana in Ulcinj, it's a river that acts as a border and there are little houses everywhere on the river sides.
Went from Bucharest to Budapest and after that to Prague only by train. We arrived in Budapest in the morning, visited the city until noon and after that we took a night train to Prague. You can visit so much in so little time without any car.
If you didn't know anything about Dubrovnik, you should check out Croatia in general. It's not just Dubrovnik, it's a small country but there are so many things to see. A lot of national parks too. ✌️

I agree. I’m an average UK citizen. Teacher married to a police man and we’ve visited most European countries -several times, plus the USA (Colorado, Wyoming, Boston and New England, Florida, New York), Cuba, Egypt, South Africa, and China. Lack of holiday entitlement must play a large part in the reason USA citizens don’t travel, but I think a large part is lack of interest in the world outside the USA.

As an Italian I would say Paris is the most iconic city in Europe. It's so iconic that some people in America thinks Paris is a country. It's so visited that France is the most visited country in -Europe- the World, before Italy, just because Paris take around 40 million tourists per year.
Most American cities are just high rise file cabinets surrounded by parking lots and a ghetto. You can walk European cities at night in safety. The architecture is so varied and beautiful. Not all beautiful European cities are just tourist attractions. London, Paris, Milan and Amsterdam are cities with thriving economies where people also live and work. I'm from NYC originally (a great city) but most American cities are so similar and soulless compared to European cities.
As a European, I love visiting the US and while you are correct that many chain restaurants and brands are the same across the country, there are a lot of places with incredible charm, such as San Antonio's Riverwalk, Miami's South Beach, the old Californian mission towns on the Coast, Charleston SC, New Orleans, Newport RI, etc.

The Sagrada Familia was designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. He also created La Pedrera, Casa Battló and many other outstanding buildings in Barcelona. One city that wasn't mentioned was Paris. I was a bit surprised that he didn't talk about it, being such an iconic city in Europe. If you ever come to Portugal, you should visit Porto, my hometown, which is an incredibly beautiful city.
It's impossible to do an objective top 10 list. If he had to redo the video he would probably replace half of them. Europe is beautiful. I think we can agree on that.
@@annmoir7111 There are many lovely places to visit in Porto. Ribeira is by the river and it's beautiful, so you should definitely go there. Porto's Cathedral is another place you can visit. Since you are coming over in October, I think you won't bump into tourists all the time. If you want to avoid crowded places Palácio de Cristal is a lovely place to go to. Older people do not usually speak English but younger people speak English very well and everyone is friendly and nice. Beware of pickpockets because we have quite a few although not as much as Lisbon.
He also did not mention Rome or Venice. But I think, as with Paris: Those cities are all "first class destinations" anyhow, without extra advertisment.

I've visited most of these cities, I particularly enjoyed Lisbon and Dubrovnik, one nice feature is that many of the stores and restaurants are unique to those cities and have been around for decades, the streets aren't spammed up with large chain stores. Croatia is a beautiful country.
What i like the most about Prague are those underground medival taverns, where they serve traditional czech kitchen and beer. it gives you really 1400s vibe.
9:15 funny that you mention it, Dubrovnik was under siege during the war in the 1990s and the walls proved extremely effective against modern artillery strikes, there are actually videos of the walls being shelled. So the walls are still useful even with modern war vehicles like helicopters and airplanes.
Sagrada Familia is not one of the most amazing buildings in the world. It is simply the most amazing building in the world. It cannot be compared to anything. I must admit that its interior made such an impression on me that tears flowed down my cheeks.
A Brit, I've been to around 8 of these cities and I have to say he's so right about these beauties. Also, though, Venice, Florence and Rome are worth checking out, Paris, Budapest and Amsterdam. Europe offers the most wonderful history, diversity and culture. I adore the States, but I'm glad I live in Europe.

The wall you were referring to is in Dubrovnik, Croatia it used to protect the city of intruders. Dubrovnik is called the Pearl of the Adriatic sea and is also Kings Landing in Game of Thrones. Dubrovnik was also an independent republic back in the day, like really back in the day. My country may be tiny but there is sooooo much to see. The whole country is worth to see not just our coast. I as a native didnt explore everything yet. We have a rich history and a lot of influences of other places due to them trying to invade us all the time.
Ryan, let me give you a hint. Some of the prettiest places in central/southern Europe are not very far apart from each other. In summer I sometimes took the car from Aachen, Germany down to Nice in France (close to Monaco), passing by Metz, Lyon, Strasbourg and/or Avignon, sometimes staying there for a night. All of them are mindblowing places from a historical and from an aesthetic point of view. The way back was maybe even better. We passed by Eze, Menton, Genua, Milan and Lugano in Italy and then spend some days in the Swiss Alps close to St. Moritz. (small tip: stay in a little village in Italy close to the border if you want ro save a little money) there are other routes like that and it's worth exploring. Don't just focus on the big cities though, the little places are usually much prettier.

Let me explain to you. Here in Europe we have castles and during those times people lived inside the castles because of protection. With time, the population started to expand and started to lived outside, but there are until today villages that still live inside the walls of fortress and/castles. Here in Portugal we have Óbidos and even Évora which the old part of the city is still inside the walls of the old fortress.
Well, in medieval times people didn't "live in castles". The castles was for the local high-born and his/her household. There would usually be a small (sometimes fortified) town connected to the castle, with rural land and farms spread around on the outskirts. In times of war, the locals would seek shelter behind the castle walls. As cities grew, ramparts and fortifications were expanded to protect the medieval towns/cities, up until the time where more modern war-technology made this defense strategy obsolete. Most European cities will today have remains of those old fortifications surrounding their old city centre - ramparts and citadels are a staple of most major European cities.

Towns had market rights, and farmers had to go to the towns if they wanted to sell their goods. Sometimes a castle or fortress was present, and usually integrated in the overall defensive structure.

Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is stunning. I visited about 20 years ago and there was no roof. The tree like columns of the interior stretched up towards the clouds. It's the most beautiful building I have ever seen. The building has progressed so much since then. I have to go back.

The car thing is one of the main things that would keep me out of ever trying to live in the US. Most cities don't seem accessible by anything other than a car.
every nation is building from what is available on its territory. If you have a clay there probably be red roofs, or brick walls. If you have sandstone everything will be white probably :) And in US you have houses from wood and paper ;)
12:30 La Sagrada Familia was originally planned as a rather simple basilika with 3 naves in a mixture of neoromanic and neogothic styles. In 1926 Gaudi died after an accident (with a tram). Afterwards construction was several times halted, and in the Spanish Civil War some parts were destroyed, but in 1950 construction resumed.
Getting lost is one of the best ways to experience many European cities. There is so much to discover and enjoy as you find your way back to a famous landmark.
We are blessed with gems everywhere. I've lived in Oxfordshire for most of my life and I keep finding new (but old) joys. Proud to be a Brit and a European.
Here in Greece in most places summers are very hot and winters are mild with no or very little snow. White colour reflects the sun and avoids for the building to heat up as much during the day. We also often close the shatters in summer during day to keep the heat out. Roofs are often flat, because it's cheaper to build and because we don't have much snow. So we don't need to build roofs that make the snow glide down to avoid too much weight on the roofs. Building is expensive here, because we have lots of earthquakes and the requirements for buildings are high in security. So you're glad if you can just put a flat concrete roof on top and avoid the cost for a wooden construction and expensive clay covering. There are places in Greece though, where the climate is colder, because of altitude and there you get the typical roofs you saw in other European cities. As you liked Positano so much, I'd suggest you watch a video about Greece, because we have so many islands and mountains, this kind of villages built on cliffs and in incredible places is pretty common. Santorini will blow your mind just as Meteora and Greece is also full of ancient and mythological places with stunning landscape.
I think it's more like modern cultural thing, even ancient Rome had red roofs and there is pretty hot weateher in Italy too, same for Croatia and Spain, hot weather can't be the real reason for white roofs. Most of those buildings in Athenes are modern and it looks like architectonical anarchy for someone from Prague. It looks like red roofs have countries which were catholic and white buildings have orthodox countries, it must be some cultural difference between our countries.

@@Blackadder75 because it's the Italian name of the island. Italians can't pronounce the Greek name of the island: Θήρα (Theera). So they came up with their own name. They did the same with Castellorizo, which in Greek is called Μεγίστη (Maeyeesty).

I love this guy's videos (if not his pronunciations!), especially as he focusses on the outdoors and is very active. Everyone will have his/her Top 10 European cities. I agree with most of these, but in Italy would replace Positano with Taormina, in Spain I prefer either San Sebastian or Valencia to Barcelona, and would drop Monte Carlo in favour of Brugge or München.
You should really check the prices of travel, accommodation and entries. Maybe they would surprise you. Everything is cheaper off season. I was a poor Eastern European university student and still travelled to a lot of places. I guess the most expensive part would be your "over the big pond" ticket but you can find surprisingly good prices there as well. They mostly showed beautiful citys by the sea, but there are also other kinds of beautiful citys that arent at the sea. For example Nuremberg, Cologne or Munich. They have giant medival cathedrals and old town squares that you cant imagine.
Was once in Barcelona and saw the Sagrada Familia. It was just mesmerizing. Even the front door had some sentences (can't remember what it said) engraved on it. Not to mention all the details on the exterior. The reason why It's still not finished has multiple reasons. Like funding since (if I remember correctly) it's not funded by the government but like from the tickets for tourists or donations. And the process was on halt during the time of the Franco Regime.
Ryan, all you need is three weeks in Europe and you can visit all these cities. It is so easy - just take the train and in couple of hours you will be in the next beautiful location. With an interrail ticket it is not expensive either.
Btw, correction to what the guy said in the video JK Rowling started writing the HP novels while she lived in Portugal. The suits and robes that Hogwarts students wear are inspired by the ones we wear in some college activities and in graduation day. And the Hogwarts staircases are inspired by the ones in Lello bookstore in Porto.
Living in Europe means you can visit these cities easily. I've been to 7 of the 10 mentioned here. Lucerne in Switzerland is beautiful- very clean and expensive. Positano is just one of the amazing coastal towns in Italy. The unfinished cathedral the "Sagrada Familia" in Barcelona is amazing. The artist Antoni Gaudi left behind some incredible works of art.
@@commandershepard2490 My son and his family took me on holiday to Italy five years ago. We drove from the Netherlands to Regensberg in germany and then the next day to Venice in Italy. On the return journey we drove back via Switzerland, Austria and Belgium. We spent a night in Lucerne and it was wonderful. But I remember that a plate of pasta and sauce cost three times the price of the same thing in Italy.

mate! as an aussie who has visited all of these cities, several times, i encourage you to find opportunities to do the same.... world famous architects such as antoni gaudi (sagrada familia et al) will no longer be a mystery to you. so far as bridges go, some of the most impressive bridges i've seen have been in the USA....most trips to the USA show me amazing bridges, and i'm not just talking california's bixby bridge or louisiana's pontchartrain bridge, or even NYC's brooklyn bridge - my overall impression of USA is brilliant bridges; so while you're waiting to visit europe you could take in some of your own nation's glory insofar as bridge building!
In Europe, as in the rest of the world, the houses are built according to the local climate and the local available resources (in the older days). If there’s a lot rain or snow, you’ll see pitched roofs (most of Europe) if there’s not enough sunshine then the buildings have a dark colour to catch and hold the heat (UK, Scotland, north of Europe), if there’s too much sun and less rain, the buildings are flat-roofed and white, to reflect the sun (Greece). In some parts of the continent as in the Peloponese Peninsula in Greece (elsewhere too), where there are not lots of trees, the older houses are made of stone (problematic insulation and disastrous in case of earthquakes), while the forsested areas have more old wooden houses which have the same issues as the stone ones. So that’s why Athens is a white city. Back some years when aircon was not as popular as nowadays, during the hot summer when the temperature stays above 40C, people used to sleep on the roof.
Europe have so many wonderful different landscapes from north to south and east to west, so many wonderful cities and villages where you can discover so many interesting things and culture. In a lot of wonderful places we made holidays, here in europe is enough to discover for a whole life.
@@multa7053 Idk, there's nothing quite like the Mediterranean landscapes in the United States. From Greece to Spain, it's a huge coastline with hundreds of islands and it's incredible. In addition, the Alps and its atmosphere are quite unique (Austria, Switzerland), the Norwegian coast with its fjords, Iceland and its volcanoes, Ireland and its cliff, France and its scenic countryside, Spain and its desert landscapes, etc... And although I agree that some parts of the USA have amazing nature, a large part of the USA is nothing but open fields. The United States and Europe are amazing anyway and got almost every type of landcape. I don't think one is better.

Ryan, save your pennies. A vacation in Europe can be cheaper than a vacation in the US. Visit in the early spring or late fall and you can get great deals on flights and hotels. The basic rule is that the farther north you go, the more it costs. Southern Europe, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece are much much cheaper than the UK or Sweden. My rule always was 1 week in London = 1 month in Portugal.
... Farther north you go the more they cheat you with your money s value.... it s true, you pay much more for almost everything and on top of that the weather can be awful during your stay.

I could name probably like 1000 cities in europe that are worth of visiting. The thing is there is not much time to explore each of them so you defo need to pick just few of them. Just in Europe every capital so around 60 capitals for 3 days to explore will keep you going for next 20 years if you will knock 3 a year lol and not talking about cities that are not capitals but worth visiting like Porto, Seville, Malaga, Valencia, Barcelona, Marseile, Lyon, Nante, Milan, Bologna, Venice, San Marino, Naples, Palermo, Basel, Stuttgard, Munich, Frankfurt, Dartmund, Antwer, Rotterdam, Hague, Hanover, Bremen, Cork, Cambridge, Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Inverness Brno, Krakow, Katowice, Kosice, Kaunas, Lviv, Graz Salzburg, Split, Zadar, Makarska etc basically you would have to be full time European city traveller so ask your parents for sponsorship :D

real jewels are small cities that nobody mentions , but the food and people are autentic and they do not overflow with tourists so the price will be better too Alps have plenty of thesee places but it depends what people want to do at their holiday - Chill and relax ? or visit some event ? or to see some nature or architecture and food . Lucerne basically looks how 99% of Switzerland looks... mountains, castles, lakes. And yes, it is oh-so-clean. The Swiss start to twitch if they see trash. You're not even supposed to park with the back of your car against a wall in case your exhaust makes the wall dirty. They live in the most direct democracy in the world- everything that goes through parliament is personally voted on by the citizens, so they all take a personal pride in their country like that. Basically... stick a pin in a map of Switzerland and it'll be beautiful. Personally I loved Chateau Chillon- a castle on a lake surrounded by mountains.
Just move to Europe, they are all easy to get to for a reasonable price. We've been to them all (well, I never went to Monaco, just my wife). Dubrovnik and Positano (well, the whole Amalfi coast) are the most stunning places on that list. Oh, and yes, we walk everywhere. Most old cities are pedestrianised at their centre.
Hey Ryan! Due to weather conditions, lack of rain and more sunny days in a year than over the northern cities, Athens has the top of their building's roofs built open for people to use it as an extension of their homes for leasure, etc. You ll find many of southern european cities are like that. Just like also on northern African areas. Basically on all the mediterranium area. Greetings from Lisboa :)
Most of those cities are older than the US , it's normal to not be made with cars in mind , you won't take down a 300 years old church to make a parking lot .
Barcelona is amazing and was a highlight of my visit to Europe. The Sagrada Familia (truly incredible, inside and out) was designed by the one and only Antonio Gaudi, a true genius, and there are many more of his stunning architectural works there. It relies on public donations to be finished (hence why it's taking so long). You should do a reaction just about the buildings and parks he designed (he designed everything down to the doorknobs). P.S. Athens Forever... more than a city, it's a vibe. The greatest city on Earth, next to Florence, Amsterdam and Barcelona.
Enjoyed the videos have been to a few of the places shown. Born in London. Stayed in Lucerne and Barcelona. Visited Monte Carlo and stayed in Dubrovnik which was lovely. Also have visited Edinburgh often as my son used to live there.
Italy is such a beautiful country to vacation from north to south. Sun, beach, the sea, delicious food and nice people. Prague is also a very beautiful city. I once attended a music concert in the Spanish synagogue there and it was so beautiful. You don`t have to be Jewish to see the various beautiful synagogues. Anyone who loves German history should visit Berlin.
🐥For anyone planning a trip somewhere in Europe: Try to go around Central Europe (Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Czechia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovenia). Everything is so cute, green and warm. :) I'm from Slovakia. We have plenty of wonderful places (especially those made by nature itself), but unfortunately they are wide apart from each other (420 km from W to E of the country) and majority of tourists don't want to go further than capital city Bratislava or High Tatras and they miss out on all the beauty there is. :) Košice, Nitra, Banská Štiavnica, Prešov for example. And our caves and castles (couple of them completely intact like the one in Stará Ľubovňa, Bojnice, Spiššká Nová Ves, Orava, Strečno) are the true wonders of it all. We have the Treetop Walk in National Park of Bavarian Forest, Slovak Paradise, Slovak Karst and much much more. Hungary smells weird to me XD and it's just lowlands everywhere, but even that is gorgeous if you know where to look (Budapest's marketplace before Christmas). I've also visited some vineyards, 'cause those are pretty typical. But I definitely prefer ZOO in Prague over the one in Nyiregyhaza (the one in Czechia has zipline like cableway on which you can slide from the hill to another spot in the area and me and my friends spend half of our day on it. XD) Poland is definitely underappreciated. I've been to Kraków and few places around it (concentration camps) and you could definitely spend days discovering the city. I heard Gdansk is marvelous to look at. I don't need to say anything about Germany and those "Germany-friendly" countries around it :) they keep everything very clean and simply MADE for tourism. I've been to Vienna in Austria and I'm definitely going there again. Absolutely stunning. And last but not least, Slovenia. Everyone's favourite country. I would still choose Italy or Croatia for my summer vacation (colder waters in Slovenia, maybe the same as in Spain which to me is brutally cold), but visually, for a hike trip, you would be in constant awe for sure. Oh, and Czechia... that's like Slovakia and Germany combined. Also a beauty. Lots of history to it. Karlštejn castle comes to mind. There's definitely more than just Prague. That's my little guide. When other nations mention Europe, they mean "Spain, England, France, Italy, well... and the rest" and they don't really consider Slavic countries worth a visit. The main reason tourists overlook the former “Eastern Bloc” is because it was under communism for so long. The repercussions of that have yet to fade from the mindset (the war in Ukraine is a hangover from those days), as so many of those nations still have very primitive attitudes towards race and so on - I know because I’ve got friends from those countries. And since the fall of communism, those nations were politically unstable for a very long time, with many wars taking place, and countries dissolving and reforming new nations all the time. The political map of Europe we learned to recite as children is radically altered just 35 years on. Nobody wants to go on holiday to a country essentially governed by a tyrannical dictatorship. They were poverty stricken, the media and radio stations were heavily censored (no Western music allowed), and the culture was dangerous. It would be like taking a holiday in North Korea. And even though that’s no longer the reality, and these countries are fast rebuilding and modernising (largely thanks to enormous cash injections from the EU, as well as citizens working abroad in much stronger economies like the UK and sending money home to their families), unfortunately, the perception persists. Of course, marketing campaigns are beginning to change that - Croatia, especially, has been fiercely promoted in recent years, and though I haven’t yet been, it looks stunning and it’s on my list.

And I don't know if you do know Velvet Revolution (Gentle Revolution), but it was the most peaceful protest against government in history OF THE WORLD. Czechia and Slovakia were divided after this revolution and there was not a drop of blood needed. My people literally walked through cities with candles in their hands. And socialism (no communism) was very popular here, because it made everyone the same. Equal. Everyone was from middle class. Everyone had a job. Everyone could afford anything desirable. Your kids could play outside all day, then you could put your head out of the window, scream at them to come and eat and simultaneously chat with your neighbours screaming at their kids. And for sure there was some Western music. But even if there wasn't, we had OUR music. Still do! Only rich people despised this time, but if normal living was enough for you, you were happy. Different regimes have their pros and cons. Now you can just watch those thieves who know how to use the system for their benefit how they buy these giant sports cars and mansions in Monaco and you see regular people struggle to buy butter for their dinner bread because of capitalism. Ask anyone except for teachers and students and they will tell you the same thing. They loved the old days. And sure other countries had it worse, Serbia had a brutal war going on, but you cannot say this regime good and this regime bad. It's not as black and white as it may appear through lenses of someone who didn't live it. EU only brought us euro and free travelling across Europe. Otherwise, if Russia decided to invade us or Hungary decided to bring back times when they were rulling our nation, EU or NATO or any other coalition wouldn't do a thing. It would be a small price for a peace. They definitely wouldn't start a war because of such tiny country. Sorry, these things are way to personal for me. For someone who doesn't like generalizations you make quite a bunch of them. The worst thing that can happen to you here is to get pickpocketed. What a tragedy! Numbers says that Slovakia is one of the safest countries in the world. In 2015 there were 0.9 murders per 100 000 people. Murder rate in US, for example, is 4.9. But yeah, sure, let's make a film about my country being crime infested hellhole. Who would ever get mad at that! No bad blood, though. I still hope you have a lovely day today, sir/madam! I'm not big into visiting cities (more into nature personally), but I've been to Athens, Edinburgh, Prague and London from this list. I loved Prague and Edinburgh. London and Athens not so much. Santiago de Compostela is also a nice city if you're into history and churches and I liked Stockholm with all it's water, too.
I have to agree with not liking Athens - I think the reason is that city is dirty. I also wasn’t moved by London. I was very recently on Stockholm and I enjoyed it, city was clean, there were clean beaches in the middle of the city and nice architecture. I also walked Camino de Santiago from Porto and it’s definitely beautiful experience.

You have to check out Sagrada Família and Antoni Gaudí. On my first visit to Barcelona, I didn't know about Gaudí and when visiting Park Güell, it blew my mind. Had to check out Sagrada and La Pedrera afterwards, it is so amazing.

Most times the little towns are more impressive. Colmar in France, San Marino (City state in Italy), Rothenburg in Germany, Zadar in Croatia, Kufstein in Austria, Brügge in Belgium and so on.
Almost every city in Europe is unique. Most of them date to the middle ages or Rennaissance and are full of period buildings and/or have surviving city walls around the old town.

After the Napoleonic wars they became first a protectorate of Sardinia; but as 1860 Nice and Savoy were ceded to France, they became again a protectorate of France. In 1861 the Grimaldis sold most of the principality to France, and the remaining Rock of Monaco became truly independent.

Both Philipp III and Pedro III died in 1285, and the crusade was officially ended by a peace treaty between France and Aragon in 1286. His son Jaime II de Aragón tried to make peace with the pope in 1295 by giving Sicilia to the pope, who then would give it as fiefdom to Anjou, while Aragón would get Corsica and Sardinia as fiefdoms by the pope. But Sicilia and Jaime's brother Federico revolted against that treaty, and suceeded in becoming their own kingdom under House Barcelona. Sardinia and Corsica were parts of the Holy Roman Empire and within that Empire ruled by the Republic of Genoa and in parts also the Republic of Pisa. In 1239 Emperor Friedrich II (of Hohenstaufen, the father of Manfredo) appointed his illegitime son Enzio "King of Sardinia"; so Sardinia became a kingdom. But Enzio became in 1249 a prisoner of war of the city of Bologna, where he lived until his death in 1272, writing melancholic poetry. Afterwards Sardinia was again occupied by Genoa, the crown nominally inherited by Aragón. In 1323 Aragón conquered Sardinia, expelling Genoa and appeasing Pisa by a trade treaty which gave Pisan traders the same rights within all Aragón realms as Aragón traders had. In 1419/1420 Alfonso V succeeded in conquering most of Corsica and defeating Genoa, but a Corsican revolt ended Aragón rule there, and Genoa came back. Alfonso V gained in 1442 the crown of Naples; since the House Barcelona went extinct some time before, he was already King of Sicily.
I always keep thinking -how come Americans don't travel much across USA as ir is so beautiful. Then I remember that living in Europe, where I too can get in the car and travel across, I don't do that much either 😅
But: Depending where you live in Europe to most places you can get in a matter of hours, albeit it takes maybe 8 of them. Even flights are o.k. since in Europe we can get by without a car. When you live in the US it might take you days to travel by car. If you fly, you must rent a car. And given the fact that in the US vacation days are scarce that makes it even more difficult. But you are right, we should travel more as long as we are physically and mentally able to do so.
Every town and city in Europe has its " trading" street. Located in the very center of it. All of them are pedestrian only!! Most of the cities are more 100eds of years old. The time when Malls and cars did not exist.
The fall of a cliff comment made me laugh: my grandma comes from a old medieval village in the mountains in center Italy, and her house absolutely terrified me even when NOT drunk ! Small little stone way to link to doors from the outside, just above a great deal of nothingness... terrifing to walk ! 😂 Thankfully they put new entrance systems later on.🤗 Beautiful mountains though !

Me and my boyfriend were thinking about visiting Vienna in Spring cause we heard that it's a beautiful city. But today he pitched the idea to me, of going for a multi day hike in Ireland wich sounds physically challenging but also really beautiful and romantic. And I'll probably see Dublin ✨
If you ever come to visit Vienna, take a one day tour to Bratislava, Slovakia, which ich abou 50miles far (1hour/13€ by train, or 1:30/6€ by bus, or 1:30/29€ by boat down the Danube river). It is worth visiting from Vienna ;)
It depends what you want from your holiday... Vienna is a beautiful city but too expensive with almost rude service in cafes, bad food!! I should have taken under consideration all the critics before go there... Your second plan is much more interesting!
Well those are two very different vacations! Maybe you can visit Vienna with your girlfriends? Great shopping, food, cafes, clubs, spa,AND culture. It's year after year the city with best quality of life in the europe.

If you want to see something medival The Austrian city of Salzburg has a litteral fortress siting on one of the city mountains just casually towering over the entire city Oh and also it's the birthplace of Mozart and you can buy groceries in the same building Mozart was born in
The video is from Ryan Shirley, he makes realy great video's. All cities they are realy great, depents what you wanna see. When you like the mediterranean life style you have to go to Barcelona. Europe has many more very intresting cities. The cool thing is in European cities, you dont need a car, just take, the metro, tram and buses. Public transportation system in european cities they are great, its the fastes way to moving around the city.
I'm surprised this list didn't include the city of Ronda, in Spain. I don't know what the city has to offer besides the huge bridge over the cliff, but that alone is one of the most fantasy-like views I've ever seen.

As a kid, I used to imagine myself moving to North America or Australia or even Brazil. But now that I'm an adult, I am so grateful to be a European and to live here ! And not just for the beauty and diversity of our continent, also for our levels of education, open values, solidarity, food and cultures. I've been to every European country and each one has something special to offer.

@@nieksalomons I am Croatian and Italian. I remember visiting the Amalfi coast with my Italian husband and some American friends. There are many small villages on the Amalfi coast, not just Positano and to get there you have to drive a very narrow winding road quite slowly and it's just the way it is. I remember their comment-we Americans would just make tunnels through these mountains and you could get to any of the little towns in a minute. We just looked at each other and realized there was no way to explain why you just can't destroy the whole mountain to make the drive shorter. And btw, the drive is actually a part of the experience. About the Dubrovnik walls 😂 I guess we could tear them down now since they don't have a purpose anymore. 😊
Bro, a lot of European cathedrals were built for centuries. I'm Czech. I travelled a lot around the whole of Europe and I just must tell you that visit to all the European heritage sites is simply impossible because our lives are too short.
Take alone the Cologne Dome. The construction took far over 600 years!

The different historic building styles evolved due to the weather. In northern Europe you need steep, hard rooftops to protect against rain, hail and to let snow slide off of them. In southern Europe you have flat rooftops one can use for different purposes as the weather is mostly sunny. And the buildings are painted white to repel heat.
And the streets are narrow to let the wind go through faster.

Note: The towns and most cities in Europe were built way before cars even existed, so they were built for pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages etc. Many, perhaps even most, are hundreds of years old, and a few even some two thousand years old. Quite mind-blowing for people in the U.S., many of whom have lost touch with the history of their ancestors and the countries they came from. With all the possibilities that the internet is offering, now's the time to go exploring and to reconnect with Europe and the rest of the world! 🌎

Yup, there are a lot of cities here in Spain that were founded by the ancient romans, such as Toletum (currently Toledo), Cartago Nova (Cartagena), Gades (Cádiz) or Valentia Edetanorum (Valencia)

Honestly yeah, I live in Montenegro and our costal cities are similar to Dubrovnik (which is like 3h away by car) and I can go to them in 1 a bit more than an hour of driving

@@commandershepard2490 yeah, sadly in the summer it can be hectic. And water in the sea region isn't for drinking. Depending on your finances Lustica bay and Porto Montenegro are 2 beautiful luxury places in Montenegro to visit. Budva is too crowded during summer, but I could recommend Bar and it's old town, or Ulcinj. They are less known places to international tourists but just as nice. Bar is more of a normal city than a touristy place, it's a big port city. And Ulcinj has nice beaches and is on the border with Albania. There is also Ada Bojana in Ulcinj, it's a river that acts as a border and there are little houses everywhere on the river sides.
Went from Bucharest to Budapest and after that to Prague only by train. We arrived in Budapest in the morning, visited the city until noon and after that we took a night train to Prague. You can visit so much in so little time without any car.
If you didn't know anything about Dubrovnik, you should check out Croatia in general. It's not just Dubrovnik, it's a small country but there are so many things to see. A lot of national parks too. ✌️

I agree. I’m an average UK citizen. Teacher married to a police man and we’ve visited most European countries -several times, plus the USA (Colorado, Wyoming, Boston and New England, Florida, New York), Cuba, Egypt, South Africa, and China. Lack of holiday entitlement must play a large part in the reason USA citizens don’t travel, but I think a large part is lack of interest in the world outside the USA.

As an Italian I would say Paris is the most iconic city in Europe. It's so iconic that some people in America thinks Paris is a country. It's so visited that France is the most visited country in -Europe- the World, before Italy, just because Paris take around 40 million tourists per year.

Most American cities are just high rise file cabinets surrounded by parking lots and a ghetto. You can walk European cities at night in safety. The architecture is so varied and beautiful. Not all beautiful European cities are just tourist attractions. London, Paris, Milan and Amsterdam are cities with thriving economies where people also live and work. I'm from NYC originally (a great city) but most American cities are so similar and soulless compared to European cities.

As a European, I love visiting the US and while you are correct that many chain restaurants and brands are the same across the country, there are a lot of places with incredible charm, such as San Antonio's Riverwalk, Miami's South Beach, the old Californian mission towns on the Coast, Charleston SC, New Orleans, Newport RI, etc.

The Sagrada Familia was designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. He also created La Pedrera, Casa Battló and many other outstanding buildings in Barcelona. One city that wasn't mentioned was Paris. I was a bit surprised that he didn't talk about it, being such an iconic city in Europe. If you ever come to Portugal, you should visit Porto, my hometown, which is an incredibly beautiful city.
It's impossible to do an objective top 10 list. If he had to redo the video he would probably replace half of them.

@@annmoir7111 There are many lovely places to visit in Porto. Ribeira is by the river and it's beautiful, so you should definitely go there. Porto's Cathedral is another place you can visit. Since you are coming over in October, I think you won't bump into tourists all the time. If you want to avoid crowded places Palácio de Cristal is a lovely place to go to. Older people do not usually speak English but younger people speak English very well and everyone is friendly and nice. Beware of pickpockets because we have quite a few although not as much as Lisbon.
He also did not mention Rome or Venice. But I think, as with Paris: Those cities are all "first class destinations" anyhow, without extra advertisment.
As a German I have to say Italy is the most beautiful country in Europe ! Miss he showed Rome, or Budapest....these cities are really so so so beautiful.....!!!

I totally agree... Italy is in my opinion not just the most beautiful country in Europe, but the world. It has everything. I would have taken out some and put on some. I didn't like Athens at all for example. Not interested in Barcelona. Lisbon is quite nice, but a little filthy and the people there were a little obnoxious. I've visited most of these cities, I particularly enjoyed Lisbon and Dubrovnik, one nice feature is that many of the stores and restaurants are unique to those cities and have been around for decades, the streets aren't spammed up with large chain stores. Croatia is a beautiful country.
I am from Prague, but I am very happy that the list didn't show just capital cities but some smaller gems as well.

What i like the most about Prague are those underground medival taverns, where they serve traditional czech kitchen and beer. it gives you really 1400s vibe.

9:15 funny that you mention it, Dubrovnik was under siege during the war in the 1990s and the walls proved extremely effective against modern artillery strikes, there are actually videos of the walls being shelled. So the walls are still useful even with modern war vehicles like helicopters and airplanes.
Sagrada Familia is not one of the most amazing buildings in the world. It is simply the most amazing building in the world. It cannot be compared to anything. I must admit that its interior made such an impression on me that tears flowed down my cheeks.

A Brit, I've been to around 8 of these cities and I have to say he's so right about these beauties. Also, though, Venice, Florence and Rome are worth checking out, Paris, Budapest and Amsterdam. Europe offers the most wonderful history, diversity and culture. I adore the States, but I'm glad I live in Europe.

The wall you were referring to is in Dubrovnik, Croatia it used to protect the city of intruders. Dubrovnik is called the Pearl of the Adriatic sea and is also Kings Landing in Game of Thrones.
Dubrovnik was also an independent republic back in the day, like really back in the day.
My country may be tiny but there is sooooo much to see. The whole country is worth to see not just our coast.
I as a native didnt explore everything yet. We have a rich history and a lot of influences of other places due to them trying to invade us all the time.
Ryan, let me give you a hint. Some of the prettiest places in central/southern Europe are not very far apart from each other. In summer I sometimes took the car from Aachen, Germany down to Nice in France (close to Monaco), passing by Metz, Lyon, Strasbourg and/or Avignon, sometimes staying there for a night. All of them are mindblowing places from a historical and from an aesthetic point of view. The way back was maybe even better. We passed by Eze, Menton, Genua, Milan and Lugano in Italy and then spend some days in the Swiss Alps close to St. Moritz. (small tip: stay in a little village in Italy close to the border if you want ro save a little money) there are other routes like that and it's worth exploring. Don't just focus on the big cities though, the little places are usually much prettier.

God I wish travelling around here was that cool 😂, where I’m from is famous for being flat, barren and devoid of anything to do or see. I feel like I’m Marco freaking Polo whenever I see a hill or a small cluster of trees - both are highly unusual here.
Let me explain to you. Here in Europe we have castles and during those times people lived inside the castles because of protection. With time, the population started to expand and started to lived outside, but there are until today villages that still live inside the walls of fortress and/castles. Here in Portugal we have Óbidos and even Évora which the old part of the city is still inside the walls of the old fortress.
Well, in medieval times people didn't "live in castles". The castles was for the local high-born and his/her household. There would usually be a small (sometimes fortified) town connected to the castle, with rural land and farms spread around on the outskirts. In times of war, the locals would seek shelter behind the castle walls.
As cities grew, ramparts and fortifications were expanded to protect the medieval towns/cities, up until the time where more modern war-technology made this defense strategy obsolete.
Most European cities will today have remains of those old fortifications surrounding their old city centre - ramparts and citadels are a staple of most major European cities.

Towns had market rights, and farmers had to go to the towns if they wanted to sell their goods. Sometimes a castle or fortress was present, and usually integrated in the overall defensive structure.

Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is stunning. I visited about 20 years ago and there was no roof. The tree like columns of the interior stretched up towards the clouds. It's the most beautiful building I have ever seen.
The building has progressed so much since then. I have to go back.

every nation is building from what is available on its territory. If you have a clay there probably be red roofs, or brick walls. If you have sandstone everything will be white probably :) And in US you have houses from wood and paper ;)

But after a quarrel between the architect and the construction supervision the project management was given to Antoni Gaudi, and after a big anonymous donation came in, he changed the plans to a basilica with 5 naves and 18 towers. Gaudi worked for 43 years at the project; in this time some details of the facade were changed according to changing fashions. The project got more and more donations. In 1926 Gaudi died after an accident (with a tram). Afterwards construction was several times halted, and in the Spanish Civil War some parts were destroyed, but in 1950 construction resumed.
And Gaudi wanted it to be built only with money from donations. So thats why it is still not ready.
Getting lost is one of the best ways to experience many European cities. There is so much to discover and enjoy as you find your way back to a famous landmark.

Here in Greece in most places summers are very hot and winters are mild with no or very little snow. White colour reflects the sun and avoids for the building to heat up as much during the day. We also often close the shatters in summer during day to keep the heat out.
Roofs are often flat, because it's cheaper to build and because we don't have much snow. So we don't need to build roofs that make the snow glide down to avoid too much weight on the roofs. Building is expensive here, because we have lots of earthquakes and the requirements for buildings are high in security. So you're glad if you can just put a flat concrete roof on top and avoid the cost for a wooden construction and expensive clay covering.
There are places in Greece though, where the climate is colder, because of altitude and there you get the typical roofs you saw in other European cities.
As you liked Positano so much, I'd suggest you watch a video about Greece, because we have so many islands and mountains, this kind of villages built on cliffs and in incredible places is pretty common. Santorini will blow your mind just as Meteora and Greece is also full of ancient and mythological places with stunning landscape.
I think it's more like modern cultural thing, even ancient Rome had red roofs and there is pretty hot weateher in Italy too, same for Croatia and Spain, hot weather can't be the real reason for white roofs. Most of those buildings in Athenes are modern and it looks like architectonical anarchy for someone from Prague. It looks like red roofs have countries which were catholic and white buildings have orthodox countries, it must be some cultural difference between our countries.

@@Blackadder75 because it's the Italian name of the island. Italians can't pronounce the Greek name of the island: Θήρα (Theera). So they came up with their own name. They did the same with Castellorizo, which in Greek is called Μεγίστη (Maeyeesty).

I love this guy's videos (if not his pronunciations!), especially as he focusses on the outdoors and is very active. Everyone will have his/her Top 10 European cities. I agree with most of these, but in Italy would replace Positano with Taormina, in Spain I prefer either San Sebastian or Valencia to Barcelona, and would drop Monte Carlo in favour of Brugge or München.
You should really check the prices of travel, accommodation and entries. Maybe they would surprise you. Everything is cheaper off season. I was a poor Eastern European university student and still travelled to a lot of places.
I guess the most expensive part would be your "over the big pond" ticket but you can find surprisingly good prices there as well.

They mostly showed beautiful citys by the sea, but there are also other kinds of beautiful citys that arent at the sea. For example Nuremberg, Cologne or Munich. They have giant medival cathedrals and old town squares that you cant imagine.
I’ve been to those 3 cities and I agree they’re definitely worth a visit. But my favourite one is Regensburg.
Was once in Barcelona and saw the Sagrada Familia. It was just mesmerizing. Even the front door had some sentences (can't remember what it said) engraved on it. Not to mention all the details on the exterior.
The reason why It's still not finished has multiple reasons. Like funding since (if I remember correctly) it's not funded by the government but like from the tickets for tourists or donations. And the process was on halt during the time of the Franco Regime.
Ryan, all you need is three weeks in Europe and you can visit all these cities. It is so easy - just take the train and in couple of hours you will be in the next beautiful location. With an interrail ticket it is not expensive either.

Living in Europe means you can visit these cities easily. I've been to 7 of the 10 mentioned here. Lucerne in Switzerland is beautiful- very clean and expensive. Positano is just one of the amazing coastal towns in Italy. The unfinished cathedral the "Sagrada Familia" in Barcelona is amazing. The artist Antoni Gaudi left behind some incredible works of art.
But usually you only go to the surounding parts of luzern, for skiing and hiking :) Only a 1,5 Hours drive from the southern black forest.
@@commandershepard2490 My son and his family took me on holiday to Italy five years ago. We drove from the Netherlands to Regensberg in germany and then the next day to Venice in Italy. On the return journey we drove back via Switzerland, Austria and Belgium. We spent a night in Lucerne and it was wonderful. But I remember that a plate of pasta and sauce cost three times the price of the same thing in Italy.

mate! as an aussie who has visited all of these cities, several times, i encourage you to find opportunities to do the same.... world famous architects such as antoni gaudi (sagrada familia et al) will no longer be a mystery to you. so far as bridges go, some of the most impressive bridges i've seen have been in the USA....most trips to the USA show me amazing bridges, and i'm not just talking california's bixby bridge or louisiana's pontchartrain bridge, or even NYC's brooklyn bridge - my overall impression of USA is brilliant bridges; so while you're waiting to visit europe you could take in some of your own nation's glory insofar as bridge building!
In Europe, as in the rest of the world, the houses are built according to the local climate and the local available resources (in the older days). If there’s a lot rain or snow, you’ll see pitched roofs (most of Europe) if there’s not enough sunshine then the buildings have a dark colour to catch and hold the heat (UK, Scotland, north of Europe), if there’s too much sun and less rain, the buildings are flat-roofed and white, to reflect the sun (Greece). In some parts of the continent as in the Peloponese Peninsula in Greece (elsewhere too), where there are not lots of trees, the older houses are made of stone (problematic insulation and disastrous in case of earthquakes), while the forsested areas have more old wooden houses which have the same issues as the stone ones. So that’s why Athens is a white city. Back some years when aircon was not as popular as nowadays, during the hot summer when the temperature stays above 40C, people used to sleep on the roof.

Europe have so many wonderful different landscapes from north to south and east to west, so many wonderful cities and villages where you can discover so many interesting things and culture. In a lot of wonderful places we made holidays, here in europe is enough to discover for a whole life.

@@multa7053 Idk, there's nothing quite like the Mediterranean landscapes in the United States. From Greece to Spain, it's a huge coastline with hundreds of islands and it's incredible. In addition, the Alps and its atmosphere are quite unique (Austria, Switzerland), the Norwegian coast with its fjords, Iceland and its volcanoes, Ireland and its cliff, France and its scenic countryside, Spain and its desert landscapes, etc... And although I agree that some parts of the USA have amazing nature, a large part of the USA is nothing but open fields. The United States and Europe are amazing anyway and got almost every type of landcape. I don't think one is better.

Ryan, save your pennies. A vacation in Europe can be cheaper than a vacation in the US. Visit in the early spring or late fall and you can get great deals on flights and hotels. The basic rule is that the farther north you go, the more it costs. Southern Europe, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece are much much cheaper than the UK or Sweden. My rule always was 1 week in London = 1 month in Portugal.
... Farther north you go the more they cheat you with your money s value.... it s true, you pay much more for almost everything and on top of that the weather can be awful during your stay.
I really like Tromsø in Norway when I was there. Budapest was nice too.
I want to go back to Budapest. Four days was NOT enough! It's almost embarrassing to say this, but I'm Norwegian, and I have never been to Tromsø. I'd love to go there during winter, and hopefully see the northern lights, but my joints don't like the Nordic winter climate, so...

I could name probably like 1000 cities in europe that are worth of visiting. The thing is there is not much time to explore each of them so you defo need to pick just few of them. Just in Europe every capital so around 60 capitals for 3 days to explore will keep you going for next 20 years if you will knock 3 a year lol and not talking about cities that are not capitals but worth visiting like Porto, Seville, Malaga, Valencia, Barcelona, Marseile, Lyon, Nante, Milan, Bologna, Venice, San Marino, Naples, Palermo, Basel, Stuttgard, Munich, Frankfurt, Dartmund, Antwer, Rotterdam, Hague, Hanover, Bremen, Cork, Cambridge, Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Inverness Brno, Krakow, Katowice, Kosice, Kaunas, Lviv, Graz Salzburg, Split, Zadar, Makarska etc basically you would have to be full time European city traveller so ask your parents for sponsorship :D

Venice Italy is iconic also. Transportation in Venice is by foot or vaporetto, a water bus. That includes police and ambulance.

Lucerne basically looks how 99% of Switzerland looks... mountains, castles, lakes. And yes, it is oh-so-clean. The Swiss start to twitch if they see trash. You're not even supposed to park with the back of your car against a wall in case your exhaust makes the wall dirty. They live in the most direct democracy in the world- everything that goes through parliament is personally voted on by the citizens, so they all take a personal pride in their country like that. Basically... stick a pin in a map of Switzerland and it'll be beautiful. Personally I loved Chateau Chillon- a castle on a lake surrounded by mountains.
Just move to Europe, they are all easy to get to for a reasonable price. We've been to them all (well, I never went to Monaco, just my wife). Dubrovnik and Positano (well, the whole Amalfi coast) are the most stunning places on that list. Oh, and yes, we walk everywhere. Most old cities are pedestrianised at their centre.
Hey Ryan! Due to weather conditions, lack of rain and more sunny days in a year than over the northern cities, Athens has the top of their building's roofs built open for people to use it as an extension of their homes for leasure, etc. You ll find many of southern european cities are like that. Just like also on northern African areas. Basically on all the mediterranium area. Greetings from Lisboa :)
Most of those cities are older than the US , it's normal to not be made with cars in mind , you won't take down a 300 years old church to make a parking lot .
Barcelona is amazing and was a highlight of my visit to Europe. The Sagrada Familia (truly incredible, inside and out) was designed by the one and only Antonio Gaudi, a true genius, and there are many more of his stunning architectural works there. It relies on public donations to be finished (hence why it's taking so long). You should do a reaction just about the buildings and parks he designed (he designed everything down to the doorknobs).
P.S. Athens Forever... more than a city, it's a vibe. The greatest city on Earth, next to Florence, Amsterdam and Barcelona.
Enjoyed the videos have been to a few of the places shown. Born in London. Stayed in Lucerne and Barcelona. Visited Monte Carlo and stayed in Dubrovnik which was lovely. Also have visited Edinburgh often as my son used to live there.

Italy is such a beautiful country to vacation from north to south. Sun, beach, the sea, delicious food and nice people. Prague is also a very beautiful city. I once attended a music concert in the Spanish synagogue there and it was so beautiful. You don`t have to be Jewish to see the various beautiful synagogues. Anyone who loves German history should visit Berlin.
🐥For anyone planning a trip somewhere in Europe:
Try to go around Central Europe (Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Czechia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovenia). Everything is so cute, green and warm. :)
I'm from Slovakia. We have plenty of wonderful places (especially those made by nature itself), but unfortunately they are wide apart from each other (420 km from W to E of the country) and majority of tourists don't want to go further than capital city Bratislava or High Tatras and they miss out on all the beauty there is. :) Košice, Nitra, Banská Štiavnica, Prešov for example. And our caves and castles (couple of them completely intact like the one in Stará Ľubovňa, Bojnice, Spiššká Nová Ves, Orava, Strečno) are the true wonders of it all. We have the Treetop Walk in National Park of Bavarian Forest, Slovak Paradise, Slovak Karst and much much more.
Hungary smells weird to me XD and it's just lowlands everywhere, but even that is gorgeous if you know where to look (Budapest's marketplace before Christmas). I've also visited some vineyards, 'cause those are pretty typical. But I definitely prefer ZOO in Prague over the one in Nyiregyhaza (the one in Czechia has zipline like cableway on which you can slide from the hill to another spot in the area and me and my friends spend half of our day on it. XD)
Poland is definitely underappreciated. I've been to Kraków and few places around it (concentration camps) and you could definitely spend days discovering the city. I heard Gdansk is marvelous to look at.
I don't need to say anything about Germany and those "Germany-friendly" countries around it :) they keep everything very clean and simply MADE for tourism. I've been to Vienna in Austria and I'm definitely going there again. Absolutely stunning.
And last but not least, Slovenia. Everyone's favourite country. I would still choose Italy or Croatia for my summer vacation (colder waters in Slovenia, maybe the same as in Spain which to me is brutally cold), but visually, for a hike trip, you would be in constant awe for sure.
Oh, and Czechia... that's like Slovakia and Germany combined. Also a beauty. Lots of history to it. Karlštejn castle comes to mind. There's definitely more than just Prague.
That's my little guide. When other nations mention Europe, they mean "Spain, England, France, Italy, well... and the rest" and they don't really consider Slavic countries worth a visit. If you were ever hesititating about your trip and what to visit... there is plenty of it here :)

The main reason tourists overlook the former “Eastern Bloc” is because it was under communism for so long. The repercussions of that have yet to fade from the mindset (the war in Ukraine is a hangover from those days), as so many of those nations still have very primitive attitudes towards race and so on - I know because I’ve got friends from those countries. And since the fall of communism, those nations were politically unstable for a very long time, with many wars taking place, and countries dissolving and reforming new nations all the time. The political map of Europe we learned to recite as children is radically altered just 35 years on. Nobody wants to go on holiday to a country essentially governed by a tyrannical dictatorship. They were poverty stricken, the media and radio stations were heavily censored (no Western music allowed), and the culture was dangerous. It would be like taking a holiday in North Korea. And even though that’s no longer the reality, and these countries are fast rebuilding and modernising (largely thanks to enormous cash injections from the EU, as well as citizens working abroad in much stronger economies like the UK and sending money home to their families), unfortunately, the perception persists. Of course, marketing campaigns are beginning to change that - Croatia, especially, has been fiercely promoted in recent years, and though I haven’t yet been, it looks stunning and it’s on my list.
@@penname5766 What you have said may be true about, let's say, Romania. My country and many around it were quite peaceful throughout history. There are no racists here, that's for sure. And I don't know if you do know Velvet Revolution (Gentle Revolution), but it was the most peaceful protest against government in history OF THE WORLD. Czechia and Slovakia were divided after this revolution and there was not a drop of blood needed. My people literally walked through cities with candles in their hands.
And socialism (no communism) was very popular here, because it made everyone the same. Equal. Everyone was from middle class. Everyone had a job. Everyone could afford anything desirable. Your kids could play outside all day, then you could put your head out of the window, scream at them to come and eat and simultaneously chat with your neighbours screaming at their kids. And for sure there was some Western music. But even if there wasn't, we had OUR music. Still do! Only rich people despised this time, but if normal living was enough for you, you were happy. Different regimes have their pros and cons. Now you can just watch those thieves who know how to use the system for their benefit how they buy these giant sports cars and mansions in Monaco and you see regular people struggle to buy butter for their dinner bread because of capitalism. Ask anyone except for teachers and students and they will tell you the same thing. They loved the old days. And sure other countries had it worse, Serbia had a brutal war going on, but you cannot say this regime good and this regime bad. It's not as black and white as it may appear through lenses of someone who didn't live it.
EU only brought us euro and free travelling across Europe. Otherwise, if Russia decided to invade us or Hungary decided to bring back times when they were rulling our nation, EU or NATO or any other coalition wouldn't do a thing. It would be a small price for a peace. They definitely wouldn't start a war because of such tiny country.
Sorry, these things are way to personal for me. For someone who doesn't like generalizations you make quite a bunch of them.
The worst thing that can happen to you here is to get pickpocketed. What a tragedy! Numbers says that Slovakia is one of the safest countries in the world. In 2015 there were 0.9 murders per 100 000 people. Murder rate in US, for example, is 4.9. But yeah, sure, let's make a film about my country being crime infested hellhole. Who would ever get mad at that!

I'm not big into visiting cities (more into nature personally), but I've been to Athens, Edinburgh, Prague and London from this list. I loved Prague and Edinburgh. London and Athens not so much. Santiago de Compostela is also a nice city if you're into history and churches and I liked Stockholm with all it's water, too.
I have to agree with not liking Athens - I think the reason is that city is dirty. I also wasn’t moved by London. I was very recently on Stockholm and I enjoyed it, city was clean, there were clean beaches in the middle of the city and nice architecture. I also walked Camino de Santiago from Porto and it’s definitely beautiful experience.

in Prague centre (unless you do some supplying) the cars are more of a hindrance than help, but we have great public transport network
You have to check out Sagrada Família and Antoni Gaudí. On my first visit to Barcelona, I didn't know about Gaudí and when visiting Park Güell, it blew my mind. Had to check out Sagrada and La Pedrera afterwards, it is so amazing.
Everyone always thinks about London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, maybe Munich or Madrid, but there are so many beautiful places in Europe.
And yes, that "castle wall" around the houses in the intro is most likely indeed a castle wall, or to be more precise, a city wall.
Most times the little towns are more impressive. Colmar in France, San Marino (City state in Italy), Rothenburg in Germany, Zadar in Croatia, Kufstein in Austria, Brügge in Belgium and so on.

Almost every city in Europe is unique. Most of them date to the middle ages or Rennaissance and are full of period buildings and/or have surviving city walls around the old town.
I have been to Lucerne and London. Both are vibrant and lovely.

In 1297 Francesco "Malizia" Grimaldi captured the fortress on the Rock of Monaco dressed as Franciscan friars (or "monacos"). A few years later Genoa won the fortress back, and the struggle between the Grimaldis and Genoa continued. After fighting the Crown of Aragon over Corsica and Sardinia Genoa lost Monaco in the late 1300s, and in 1419 the Grimaldis purchased Monaco from Aragon and began to style them "Princes of Monaco". In 1630 they allied with France against Spain and became a French protectorate. After the Napoleonic wars they became first a protectorate of Sardinia; but as 1860 Nice and Savoy were ceded to France, they became again a protectorate of France. In 1861 the Grimaldis sold most of the principality to France, and the remaining Rock of Monaco became truly independent.

Manfredo lost the war against Carlos de Anjou (who was sent by the pope), and Anjou then occupied the Kingdom of Sicily and Naples (which included all of Italy south from the Papal states, while Italy north of the Papal States was the Kingdom of Italy). In 1282 the people of Sicily revolted against Anjou and asked Pedro to take the crown of Sicily as the son-in-law of Manfredo. Supported by the population he could conquer the island within 2 months, but he was now in conflict with the pope who excommunicated him and ordered a crusade against Aragon, which was executed by King Philipp III of France; Pedro's brother Jaime of Mallorca, count of Roussillon, supported Philipp III, but the crusade failed due to a plague during the siege of Girona and the defeat of the French fleet by the fleed of Aragon. Both Philipp III and Pedro III died in 1285, and the crusade was officially ended by a peace treaty between France and Aragon in 1286. His son Jaime II de Aragón tried to make peace with the pope in 1295 by giving Sicilia to the pope, who then would give it as fiefdom to Anjou, while Aragón would get Corsica and Sardinia as fiefdoms by the pope. But Sicilia and Jaime's brother Federico revolted against that treaty, and suceeded in becoming their own kingdom under House Barcelona.
Sardinia and Corsica were parts of the Holy Roman Empire and within that Empire ruled by the Republic of Genoa and in parts also the Republic of Pisa. In 1239 Emperor Friedrich II (of Hohenstaufen, the father of Manfredo) appointed his illegitime son Enzio "King of Sardinia"; so Sardinia became a kingdom. But Enzio became in 1249 a prisoner of war of the city of Bologna, where he lived until his death in 1272, writing melancholic poetry. Afterwards Sardinia was again occupied by Genoa, the crown nominally inherited by Aragón. In 1323 Aragón conquered Sardinia, expelling Genoa and appeasing Pisa by a trade treaty which gave Pisan traders the same rights within all Aragón realms as Aragón traders had. In 1419/1420 Alfonso V succeeded in conquering most of Corsica and defeating Genoa, but a Corsican revolt ended Aragón rule there, and Genoa came back.
Alfonso V gained in 1442 the crown of Naples; since the House Barcelona went extinct some time before, he was already King of Sicily.

I always keep thinking -how come Americans don't travel much across USA as ir is so beautiful. Then I remember that living in Europe, where I too can get in the car and travel across, I don't do that much either 😅
But: Depending where you live in Europe to most places you can get in a matter of hours, albeit it takes maybe 8 of them. Even flights are o.k. since in Europe we can get by without a car. When you live in the US it might take you days to travel by car. If you fly, you must rent a car. And given the fact that in the US vacation days are scarce that makes it even more difficult.
But you are right, we should travel more as long as we are physically and mentally able to do so.
Every town and city in Europe has its " trading" street. Located in the very center of it. All of them are pedestrian only!! Most of the cities are more 100eds of years old. The time when Malls and cars did not exist.
The fall of a cliff comment made me laugh: my grandma comes from a old medieval village in the mountains in center Italy, and her house absolutely terrified me even when NOT drunk ! Small little stone way to link to doors from the outside, just above a great deal of nothingness... terrifing to walk ! 😂 Thankfully they put new entrance systems later on.🤗 Beautiful mountains though !

Me and my boyfriend were thinking about visiting Vienna in Spring cause we heard that it's a beautiful city. But today he pitched the idea to me, of going for a multi day hike in Ireland wich sounds physically challenging but also really beautiful and romantic. And I'll probably see Dublin ✨

If you ever come to visit Vienna, take a one day tour to Bratislava, Slovakia, which ich abou 50miles far (1hour/13€ by train, or 1:30/6€ by bus, or 1:30/29€ by boat down the Danube river). It is worth visiting from Vienna ;)

Vienna is a beautiful city but too expensive with almost rude service in cafes, bad food!! I should have taken under consideration all the critics before go there...

Well those are two very different vacations! Maybe you can visit Vienna with your girlfriends? Great shopping, food, cafes, clubs, spa,AND culture. It's year after year the city with best quality of life in the europe.

The video is from Ryan Shirley, he makes realy great video's. All cities they are realy great, depents what you wanna see. When you like the mediterranean life style you have to go to Barcelona. Europe has many more very intresting cities. The cool thing is in European cities, you dont need a car, just take, the metro, tram and buses. Public transportation system in european cities they are great, its the fastes way to moving around the city.
I'm surprised this list didn't include the city of Ronda, in Spain. I don't know what the city has to offer besides the huge bridge over the cliff, but that alone is one of the most fantasy-like views I've ever seen.
