What the other person said, but keep in mind even the C6 R5 showcases or even the C0 full investment showcases aren’t even as good as they might show. Only being able to do that for 20% of the time means that other 80% is doing zero damage and funneling particles. Even 100k hits just doesn’t reach the bare minimum because of the long cooldowns and massive energy requirements in practice.
Whats crazy about dehya isnt the fact that her kit is bad but that she has so many bugs in her gameplay. Like making a purposely bad character is one thing but to make one that hasnt been properly bug tested is a new low for hoyoverse.
I wouldnt say its solely because her gameplay is bugged, her multipliers are way too low to take advantage of her hp scalings yet her ascension stat is hp.

I agree that part of this racism is implicit, where I live we also call it "structural racism", when racist things are normalized, and people sometimes have no idea that this is offensive or harmful. now, because most of the only colored characters have a bad performance, I don't know if it's so implicit.

I don't know if prejudice is the right term either. It is there, no doubt, but, I think what he's aiming more for is that it is subconscious. It is something we don't even realize we are, or are doing, because it is just how things are. Take, for example, cowboys. For most of us, that's probably a white guy. That's what we've seen over and over again in popular media, or at least, the media from when cowboys were popular, as well as the big names recorded in the histories about the west, the ones we associate with "cowboy" , also being white. But, well, being a cowboy is a crappy job, not exactly desirable, and like many such jobs, it didn't draw from the people on top of the society. And so there were plenty of black and Hispanic cowboys. But we still think of them as white, because that's what is culturally ingrained in us. We're not prejudiced against non-white cowboys. We just don't consider them at all most of the time. And that goes into other things as well. Things we just take in daily, that influence our own thoughts, and we never question them, because we've never had cause to.
While I somewhat agree with him, I think they are consciously and intentionally trying to be racist. I mean, almost all the characters of colour in-game are dealth with unfairly. Kaeya, who is from khaenri'ah, is somehow a free 4 star. Cyno quickbloom is good, but not really because of cyno, but rather because hyperbloom is broken. And all the other characters of colour(xinyan, Candace and dehya) just straight up suck.
the word you're looking for, zajef, is that racism is sometimes (always) systemic. systemic racism doesn't require individual racists being explicitly racist to function as a system of oppression. in china (and most, if not all, of asia) colorism is a huge thing and people with darker than pearly white skin are looked down upon, whether it's because they have a tan or it's just genetics.

Me and my friends who are Asians in Asia having a conversation about Dehya : "Omg! Dehya is actually us!" "What you mean?" "Dehya is just the typical Asian kid with trolling grieving parents who doesn't love her!" "☠️, I feel that on such a deep level..."
I guess one way to put it is that Hoyo is being racist without them realising it. I discussed this issue with a Honkai fan who told me of a gyaru character named Carole Pepper and how her story was about her hating her skin tone and not being up to Asian beauty standards, with the other protagonists telling her how wrong she was about herself which... Loving yourself the way you are is a nice message and all, but it doesn't diminish the fact that it's quite suspicious they opted to make that story over literally anything else. Racism is a massive issue in all of Asia, it's part of their culture at this point, with the whole "gyaru" movement starting as a reaction against the strict Asian standards. So, is Hoyo racist? Yes. Is it on purpose? Hopefully not. Are they going to treat a tan character the same way they treated the ruler of fantasy China by giving Dehya the necessary buffs so she stops sucking balls? I highly doubt it.

Not to mention, when right after this conversation you get a flashback to her Mother (if i remember this correctly) and she dipacted with the most manliest voice possible while also looking like an old drawn caricature. Carole's lack of confidence is something that can happen to many people and it's solved on a very respectable way. The Sumeru Archon Quest started by showing the racial issues between the desert-dwellers and the Akademiya and finishes with both sides joining together to improve the life in Aaru Village and have scholars teach the people there. The 1st desert world quest clearly shows the researcher being in the absolute wrong while the 2nd world quest somewhat makes you understand Liloupar's initial hatred towards desert-dwellers even tho she's still... well, Liloupar.

I feel like she'd be fine if they allowed her field to have stun resistance from the moment you hit her E skill to the moment it expires. Also her burst either needs some higher damage scaling or, if they don't want people to use her as DPS, give her burst an additional function that can synergize with a team. A few suggestions such as... -Small heals per hit to team scaled on either HP or a percentage of damage done. -A mark skill similar to Mona where the next elemental recation after the burst has increased damage scaling for that one instance. -Each hit provides 5 energy(not to Dehya) to teammates, essentially making her burst a battery to be used to more quickly recharge others for your other characters builds with low ER.
I got Dehya because I really like the character. I feel that you can level her enough that overworld and material/artifact domains feel fluid. Pairing her with Layla or Rosaria kind of works for me. Still disappointed that they didn't respect the way she was portrayed in the story.

Why the f am I still seeing chat says Hoyoverse made Dehya bad because they are catering to the CN community? I'm Chinese, and from what I see, most CN players loved Dehya ever since she made the first appearance in 3.0. And they are hoping other regions would make more fuss about her because they think Hoyoverse doesn't listen to them at all. Plus Dehya/Cyno banners made relatively good revenue on the first day despite her being bad.

I understand how bad Dehya is, but she is SUCH a comfy character to slot into a burn-melt Ganyu team with Nahida. Sure the team isn’t the best as far as a budget player goes, but if you’re looking for something to finally un-bench your Ganyu, it’s pretty fun.
Well, when you're at the bottom, the only way to go is up. So yeah, it is very likely she'll be power crept. She is screwed up in so many ways that it is hard to believe that it wasn't done on purpose, and it is unlikely they'll manage to screw up a similar character as badly. Even a four star designed along the same idea will probably creep her.
To be powercrept when you are the worst unit in the game is kinda an inevitability. Id be very upset if from now on they never release a unit better than dehya.
Racism is very complex to analyse in genshin case. The only certain answer is that it exists, but the mecanisms it works there is not simple to describe. I live in SAM, the racism here is fuking brutal because of slavery past and we were the colonized ones (and each individual country here has its own structures and social mechanics), the racism in US an EU is different because they are the colonizers, the ones who came up the eugenics. The social structure performs different even with the same eugenic root. In Asia case is also unique in their own way because they were also the colonized ones and they are not universaly black, they have lighter skin tones as well. Japan is like the second greatest public for genshin and japan is racist af. They were the colonizers and made massive genocides in asia. Im still studying how the racism structures work in China but we can start by not trying to use our own country race structures and just apply there and expect to be the same explanation, cus it only explain our cases
Japan racism is simple back then. Japanese people have genetics of Skin pale as they are born. But getting Exposed for the sun to long they get tan, brownish skin or darker. Since things like that happened a pattern was made. Workers who work Outside in the sun gets real tan and Noble rich people stay inside pale. Japan racism is more on the You are dark skin you must be just a worker not some important noble man. I would say similar structure to china too. Now for current modern times. Certain rich pale people do still shit on Tan people. But most of the racism is more on colorism where its about beauty standards this days. Because asians can be white if they treat their tan skin. I really like your colorism point and think about this topic frequently. I think the developers implicitly view the default human to be light skinned colored, and also place more importance on Asian/ European culture than African/American (America meaning both continents)/Pacific Islander/etc. cultures. I think this is inherently rooted in racism as and I really wish there other mentioned cultures were included. Side note: I can see an argument for Mondstadt being American with its views of freedom and stuff, but America, especially colonial America was founded on Black labor, and there should at least be a presence of Black people. Additionally, just because a region has primarily people of a certain skin tone doesn't mean everyone has to be that skin color. I find it quite problematic that there's not a single Black person in all of Genshin.
I didn't expect Zajef to also be a proponent of the "chinese people are all racist" theory. Dehya has been selling incredibly well in China, meaning that they like her character enough to pull for her even if she's terrible. Also, Cyno and Kaeya are great units, so saying that all black/tan characters are terrible on purpose is simply incorrect. Sad to see, honestly. i don’t think hoyo makes characters bad because they are darker skinned. people will pull for characters that they like, even if they’re bad. dehya also has high sales in china currently because of genshin’s growing player base and more whales in cn (the charity event as well). from my personal experience from when i went back to china for a family reunion, dehya was extremely unpopular generally. hoyo probably thought that people weren’t going to pull too much, so they kind of gave up on making her good. she’s probably just a test to see how low players will sink to pull for the characters they like. why dehya of all characters? i personally think that’s where the colorism starts. they didn’t make her bad on purpose, but they thought that she wouldn’t sell due to her skin color and used her as a test subject instead.

I think the racism discussion is ridiculous and is primarily a western perspective. Most of the western countries have had slavery and racism based on skin color for a major part of the last 500 years. The Asian/South East Asian countries never had it in that sense. The word here is absolutely not appropriate. Coming to the topic, isn't Dehya like one of the better characters in the game in terms of how she looks and is presented ? In fact, most of the criticism for her kit is precisely because she is so well designed and her presentation in the story is good. It's just so weird that there are people that genuinely thinks hoyo is racist. Like, bitch, out of all the regions on the map, only one of them is inspired by a region predominantly of people with darker skin tone, and that's the desert area in sumeru, specifically, which is based on egypt , which is exactly where you find most of them in the game. That's because saudi arabia, the country in the forest side of sumeru is inspired by, is majoritarely white, and so are all of the other countries that inspired the other regions, like germany (mondstadt), china (liyue) and japan (inazuma). I don't think people realise that if they made most character in the forest side black that could be considered racist against arab people as it would be an extremely inaccurate depiction of the IRL region.

@@wardell808 I find it hard to believe sumeru is based primarely on those areas. In all areas of the game you can see at least some geographic resemblances to the IRL countries they are based on. Mondstadt is probably the farthest from the country it's based on in terms of territory shape, but liyue resembles china in the map, inazuma resembles japan in the map and sumeru resembles saudi arabia and egypt in the map. Not to mention that the music of the area uses techniques and sounds that are commonly used to represent exactly those areas: arabia and egypt.

I wouldnt say its solely because her gameplay is bugged, her multipliers are way too low to take advantage of her hp scalings yet her ascension stat is hp.

I agree that part of this racism is implicit, where I live we also call it "structural racism", when racist things are normalized, and people sometimes have no idea that this is offensive or harmful. now, because most of the only colored characters have a bad performance, I don't know if it's so implicit.

I don't know if prejudice is the right term either. It is there, no doubt, but, I think what he's aiming more for is that it is subconscious. It is something we don't even realize we are, or are doing, because it is just how things are.
Take, for example, cowboys. For most of us, that's probably a white guy. That's what we've seen over and over again in popular media, or at least, the media from when cowboys were popular, as well as the big names recorded in the histories about the west, the ones we associate with "cowboy" , also being white. But, well, being a cowboy is a crappy job, not exactly desirable, and like many such jobs, it didn't draw from the people on top of the society. And so there were plenty of black and Hispanic cowboys. But we still think of them as white, because that's what is culturally ingrained in us. We're not prejudiced against non-white cowboys. We just don't consider them at all most of the time.
And that goes into other things as well. Things we just take in daily, that influence our own thoughts, and we never question them, because we've never had cause to.
While I somewhat agree with him, I think they are consciously and intentionally trying to be racist. I mean, almost all the characters of colour in-game are dealth with unfairly. Kaeya, who is from khaenri'ah, is somehow a free 4 star. Cyno quickbloom is good, but not really because of cyno, but rather because hyperbloom is broken. And all the other characters of colour(xinyan, Candace and dehya) just straight up suck.

the word you're looking for, zajef, is that racism is sometimes (always) systemic. systemic racism doesn't require individual racists being explicitly racist to function as a system of oppression. in china (and most, if not all, of asia) colorism is a huge thing and people with darker than pearly white skin are looked down upon, whether it's because they have a tan or it's just genetics.

I guess one way to put it is that Hoyo is being racist without them realising it. I discussed this issue with a Honkai fan who told me of a gyaru character named Carole Pepper and how her story was about her hating her skin tone and not being up to Asian beauty standards, with the other protagonists telling her how wrong she was about herself which... Loving yourself the way you are is a nice message and all, but it doesn't diminish the fact that it's quite suspicious they opted to make that story over literally anything else.
Racism is a massive issue in all of Asia, it's part of their culture at this point, with the whole "gyaru" movement starting as a reaction against the strict Asian standards.
So, is Hoyo racist? Yes. Is it on purpose? Hopefully not. Are they going to treat a tan character the same way they treated the ruler of fantasy China by giving Dehya the necessary buffs so she stops sucking balls? I highly doubt it.

The Sumeru Archon Quest started by showing the racial issues between the desert-dwellers and the Akademiya and finishes with both sides joining together to improve the life in Aaru Village and have scholars teach the people there.
The 1st desert world quest clearly shows the researcher being in the absolute wrong while the 2nd world quest somewhat makes you understand Liloupar's initial hatred towards desert-dwellers even tho she's still... well, Liloupar.

With that being said I do feel the need to question how important it actually is
I feel like she'd be fine if they allowed her field to have stun resistance from the moment you hit her E skill to the moment it expires.
Also her burst either needs some higher damage scaling or, if they don't want people to use her as DPS, give her burst an additional function that can synergize with a team. A few suggestions such as...
-Small heals per hit to team scaled on either HP or a percentage of damage done.
-A mark skill similar to Mona where the next elemental recation after the burst has increased damage scaling for that one instance.
-Each hit provides 5 energy(not to Dehya) to teammates, essentially making her burst a battery to be used to more quickly recharge others for your other characters builds with low ER.
Liking Dehya is easy, playing her is the hard part

I got Dehya because I really like the character. I feel that you can level her enough that overworld and material/artifact domains feel fluid. Pairing her with Layla or Rosaria kind of works for me. Still disappointed that they didn't respect the way she was portrayed in the story.

Why the f am I still seeing chat says Hoyoverse made Dehya bad because they are catering to the CN community? I'm Chinese, and from what I see, most CN players loved Dehya ever since she made the first appearance in 3.0. And they are hoping other regions would make more fuss about her because they think Hoyoverse doesn't listen to them at all. Plus Dehya/Cyno banners made relatively good revenue on the first day despite her being bad.
为爱充值(whaling for love) is what we say when pulling for characters that have disappointing kits/numbers but high popularity in lore/designing. So please stop letting Hoyoverse separate communities. We are all we've got. Lots of players even donated to charity groups in tribute to Dehya's character teaser.

Well, when you're at the bottom, the only way to go is up. So yeah, it is very likely she'll be power crept. She is screwed up in so many ways that it is hard to believe that it wasn't done on purpose, and it is unlikely they'll manage to screw up a similar character as badly. Even a four star designed along the same idea will probably creep her.
To be powercrept when you are the worst unit in the game is kinda an inevitability. Id be very upset if from now on they never release a unit better than dehya.

Racism is very complex to analyse in genshin case. The only certain answer is that it exists, but the mecanisms it works there is not simple to describe.
I live in SAM, the racism here is fuking brutal because of slavery past and we were the colonized ones (and each individual country here has its own structures and social mechanics), the racism in US an EU is different because they are the colonizers, the ones who came up the eugenics. The social structure performs different even with the same eugenic root.
In Asia case is also unique in their own way because they were also the colonized ones and they are not universaly black, they have lighter skin tones as well.
Japan is like the second greatest public for genshin and japan is racist af. They were the colonizers and made massive genocides in asia.

I really like your colorism point and think about this topic frequently. I think the developers implicitly view the default human to be light skinned colored, and also place more importance on Asian/ European culture than African/American (America meaning both continents)/Pacific Islander/etc. cultures. I think this is inherently rooted in racism as and I really wish there other mentioned cultures were included.
Side note: I can see an argument for Mondstadt being American with its views of freedom and stuff, but America, especially colonial America was founded on Black labor, and there should at least be a presence of Black people.
Additionally, just because a region has primarily people of a certain skin tone doesn't mean everyone has to be that skin color. I find it quite problematic that there's not a single Black person in all of Genshin.

Dehya has been selling incredibly well in China, meaning that they like her character enough to pull for her even if she's terrible.
Also, Cyno and Kaeya are great units, so saying that all black/tan characters are terrible on purpose is simply incorrect.

i don’t think hoyo makes characters bad because they are darker skinned. people will pull for characters that they like, even if they’re bad. dehya also has high sales in china currently because of genshin’s growing player base and more whales in cn (the charity event as well).
from my personal experience from when i went back to china for a family reunion, dehya was extremely unpopular generally. hoyo probably thought that people weren’t going to pull too much, so they kind of gave up on making her good. she’s probably just a test to see how low players will sink to pull for the characters they like. why dehya of all characters? i personally think that’s where the colorism starts. they didn’t make her bad on purpose, but they thought that she wouldn’t sell due to her skin color and used her as a test subject instead.

I think the racism discussion is ridiculous and is primarily a western perspective. Most of the western countries have had slavery and racism based on skin color for a major part of the last 500 years. The Asian/South East Asian countries never had it in that sense. Coming to the topic, isn't Dehya like one of the better characters in the game in terms of how she looks and is presented ? In fact, most of the criticism for her kit is precisely because she is so well designed and her presentation in the story is good. So why are they making a dark skinned character look so good if they are racist, or whatever the shit Zajef said, "conscious racism" ?

The 'implicit' racism discussion was more with the fact that out of the entire roster there's 5 dark skinned characters out of 64. Even in a region like Sumeru, where dark skinned characters would be representative (As Sumeru is inspired by Swana countries)

Like, bitch, out of all the regions on the map, only one of them is inspired by a region predominantly of people with darker skin tone, and that's the desert area in sumeru, specifically, which is based on egypt , which is exactly where you find most of them in the game. That's because saudi arabia, the country in the forest side of sumeru is inspired by, is majoritarely white, and so are all of the other countries that inspired the other regions, like germany (mondstadt), china (liyue) and japan (inazuma). I don't think people realise that if they made most character in the forest side black that could be considered racist against arab people as it would be an extremely inaccurate depiction of the IRL region.

@@wardell808 I find it hard to believe sumeru is based primarely on those areas. In all areas of the game you can see at least some geographic resemblances to the IRL countries they are based on. Mondstadt is probably the farthest from the country it's based on in terms of territory shape, but liyue resembles china in the map, inazuma resembles japan in the map and sumeru resembles saudi arabia and egypt in the map. Not to mention that the music of the area uses techniques and sounds that are commonly used to represent exactly those areas: arabia and egypt.

some beliefs can be slightly racist like thinking lighter skin is more attractive (hoyo seems to think so) but it really isn't a hateful thing. You can talk about an issue while understanding it's not necessarily as big of a deal as other issues.
