I know this is about Axl's girlfriend/wife, but my Dad and I danced to this at my wedding. He died unexpectedly last year. On the way home from his funeral, I was holding his urn in my lap and this song came on. Every time I hear it, it feels like he's sending it to me. I always hear it when I need my Dad the most. So while it's technically a love song, it can mean so many things to so many different people.
You are absolutely right. This is the ringtone on my phone for my oldest daughter. I have 2 and she was always the sweetest kid. Don't get me wrong, I love both my girls. But she was born in 93 and youngest in 2000. So Guns was just so amazing and their music was still way popular in those early 90s. And she's turned out to be an amazing woman and mother. I am very close to her and am extremely proud of her.
GenX here✋🏻 We never not once ever thought this was about an actual child. This was always about someone he is very much in love with. This was a big one in the soundtrack of my youth.
My youngest brother got married 3 years ago; our Mother, who was 75 at the time, loves this song; crazy to think she was in her 40’s and I was in my 20’s when this came out and he was just a little kid; time flies. Anyway, this was the song for the Mother and Son dance; it was PRICELESS ❤ Her favorite part: “Where do we go now”
He wrote it about his first love. Her name is Erin Everly. The Professor of Rock has a story about it. She is the daughter of one of the Everly Brothers. They were married for a short time and I believe it was annulled. This is one of the most downloaded and sold songs in the world. The number is in the billions.
Right. I was about to write this too. More specifically, the lyrics were originally a love poem on it's own to Erin. Only later, when Slash and Izzy were working out the new song instrumentally, Axl heard what they were doing and thought that poem would be a good lyric to it. ....however, the poem ends after the 2nd verse. After the guitar solo during the arrangement rehearsals, they didn't know what to do. Axl told the producer: "Where do we go now?" The producer then said say that!.
Axl Rose, renowned as the frontman of Guns N' Roses, is not only a rock legend but also a vocalist with a remarkable five-octave vocal range. His ability to effortlessly hit both high and low notes has set him apart in the music world
It's similar to you calling your significant other "baby girl". It's a love song. As a man, you often look at your significant other as innocent and needing protection. It's a term of endearment.
Love song❤️ She made him remember childhood and was his safe place. However I played this for my son after he was born. I didn't think they would mind ❤
One of the GREATEST hard rock song of all time The song was written about Axl's ex girlfriend Erin Everly daughter of Don Everly of The Everly Brothers

I saw that this morning, too. Just another reason why I like JBJ. Good hearted man in addition to being a legend. I was actually surprised when he was part of the Jimmy Buffett "Keep the party going" memorial concert earlier this year. Had no idea they had been good friends & it just made me adore him more.
I'm just blown away that this song is almost 40 years old.. I watched a Nirvana interview yesterday from 1991, hard to believe those kids were goofing around in the interview 33 years ago... time goes sooo fast....
I always thought this song was about his first love/crush. That opening still gives me goosebumps all these years later, I could listen to it over and over!!
I'm sure the many other comments on here have referenced the "where do we go, where do we go now?" part, but in case you haven't heard, that part was sung by Axl when they were jamming and he was sincerely asking 'where do we go, where do we take the song from here?' and it just sounded good and they left it.
For me, it reminds me of when my daughter was a teenager, and my way of parenting her as I had when she was a child weren't working, and I wondered how she and I would work our our differences, that though she was my daughter, she was also her own person.
I saw Guns N' Roses live in Cologne in 1993. Müngersdorf Stadium, 50m from the stage The best concert of my life. The opening acts were Faith No More and Soundgarden
One of the most distinctive basses in metal. Usually they’re so buried under guitars, but Izzy really keeps things bouncing which I think helped mainstream their sound.
Back in the day "child or chile' "was the word for woman girlfriend, boyfriend. and I think it was just a shortened term from "honey child'. I think Janis Joplin has used it in a lot of her songs too. Axl Rose was dating Erin Everly(Don Everly of the Everly Brother's daughter) at the time of this song, in fact they were married for about a year.Erin appears in this video if you watch closely. He wrote this song for her.
"Child" as an endearment for one's female sweetheart, a bit less common but not unknown endearment at various times. Similar to using "baby" for an adult sweetheart.
One of the best power ballads written. "Child" is often times used as a term of endearment for someone they love (not being a child). In this case, it is about his girl at the time and their relationship. The song equates the qualities & characteristics of his lover and how she brings back memories of his childhood. The opening is iconic. Slash's opening riff is beautiful and the bass is incredible. The band overall knocked this out of the park and set them on a road to being an iconic band. The entire album, APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION set off a chain reaction for this genre of music to be much more genuine. At the time, hair metal was a bit over the top with party anthems, sex, drugs & rock n roll. GnR brought it back down to Earth.
These songs are the memories of our lives. For me I consider Slash’s solo in this is like Phil Collins getting to the drum part in ‘In the Air Tonight’. It’s the extra epic bit in the song 😃🤣
Axl Rose was listening to the musicians upstairs in his room and was inspired to write lyrics, which he completed by the following afternoon.[10] He based it on his girlfriend Erin Everly (daughter of Don Everly, of the Everly Brothers, and Venetia Stevenson), and declared that Lynyrd Skynyrd served as an inspiration "to make sure that we'd got that heartfelt feeling
It's wild that the opening riff was just a little something/nothing that Slash used as a finger warm-up - look up serendipity & there will be a picture of him tuning up.
This was my song for my daughter when she was born in 2002. You know you always have a song that you have that you relate to each child and this is the one that makes me nostalgic about her childhood. She is a senior in college today. I can't believe it's been 23 years!
The song was about his future wife to be, Erin Everly. She is the daughter of one of the Everly Brothers. (Don Everly) She is also the girl in the video.
Yes, Axel‼️ Thanks for the memory. Late 20s, just got kids off to school, washing breakfast dishes. The phone rang, it was my sister saying put on MTV! I did and it was Guns and Roses doing this song, we were hooked‼️ Sometimes lyrics aren't important, just FEEL the song💖
Some radio stations play a chopped-up version where he comes in singing sooner and they also chop out much of the soloing guitar. Written bout Axel's then jet-setting girlfriend. She is daughter to one of the Everly Brothers.
My younger brother and his wife dressed as Slash and Axel Rhodes for Halloween. He's tall, she was like 5 foot flat. Long blonde hair, but on that bandana did Axel's little dance. It was sooooooo cool!!! I miss my brother. He passed at the age of 46, in 2017. 😢😢 God bless y'all ✌️✌️ & ❤❤
If a rock song had a great guitar solo that spoke to my emotions, It was a winner in my book. Words to me were always secondary. It was all about the music and how it made me feel.

😊❤ Hi Black P! 😅 You are absolutely correct that there's different versions of songs for the radio!! LOL 😂 I guess in the biz they call it 'radio friendly '. Not sure who does it but, they will edit out curse words, remove instrumental sections. If it had too long of an into, middle or ending instrument solo, it was cut. 😢 That's what I also love about these channels is that I get to experience something new too! So many of the songs from my youth I only experienced through the radio. But now I get to see videos of live performances and hear the songs the way the artists intended them to be!! 😅 Luv ya 😊❤❤
I used to work midnights at a gas station across the road from a bar called the Aberdeen that played live music in the 80’s. After the bar closed the bands would play acoustic music and one of the bands they would play was Guns and Roses. They used to play Patience and it was one of my favourites
I had a leather jacket with a fringe, and a Levi's jean jacket vest I wore just like that, except I had a GUNS N ROSES 🌹, scroll patch on the back of it
He is referring t himself as sweet child and talking about trusting his love so much it takes him back to the places when he was a kid that made him feel safe
Back in the 1980s the radios would play full version of the song and most of the rock bands of that time and some before always had a guitar or drum solo depending on who in the band was a beast at playing their instruments
GnR at their finest. Slash guitar rift and axl spray painted on trousers 😂❤ 🔫n🌹. 🎩 🚬 Sweet childhood memories for me although I know that isn’t what the song is about 😊. Nice one BP great reaction as always xx
My sister was born the week it came out (in the UK) and a month after it came out in the USA, it has always been my dad and sisters song. They even danced to it for her father daughter dance at her wedding
Slash was using that riff in the beginning to practice chord progression, Axl liked it, Slash wasn't so sure, it stayed in and boom...it was never supposed to be one of the most recognizable riffs ever.
One of the best debuts albums of all time along with Boston. You can listen to each sone one right after the other and enjoy. It was so insanely popular when it came out, I was in High School at the time. The two albums that stood out was this and Hysteria.
"The song was based around his romantic partner, his girlfriend Erin Everly (the daughter of Don Everly of the Everly Brothers). Rose said the idea was also inspired by the “heartfelt” Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band completed the song soon after, adding a bridge and a solo in the middle of the track."
You have to check out Carrie Underwood on stage with G N R singing " Welcome To The Jungle " and this song also. Yes she sings country but she can rock it out.
It's a love letter to a woman that makes him feel secure, he's using the word child the way many would use the word baby.
Yup
for some reason, baby feels less icky to me than child. 🤷♀
I've never heard anyone call their woman "child", or even allude to that poetically, as something interchangeable with "baby". I've heard "This is my Girl". I don't know man, unless he is referring to this from the perspective of his boyhood memory as a child, it's odd.

This must be a generational thing. I never once considered this was about a child. It’s always been about a woman he loves.
Cause we always got the messages.
The newer generation ALWAYS takes things way too literally
Guns N' Roses was never on my radar. This is MY first time reacting to it. IMHO It's about a woman not a child...NOT getting any "it's about a kid" thing.
P.S. Slash is the man.
“Honey Child” is what we call our significant other, in the South. This guy is weird if he thinks calling your girlfriend “Child” is weird.
The bass line in this song is so underappreciated. It's incredible.
Agreed. Duff doesn't get anywhere near the love he deserves in my opinion. His Bass lines are a big part of their sound.
Love Duff!
The baseline is the song with help of the rhythm guitar. The vocals and the lead are the flashy outer wear.
Duff is seriously underrated. I get the line from Paradise City in my head alot.
This song is the reason I started playing guitar and bass 🤘🏼

YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS! Ya need to play this for your kids! This is me and my two girls song. So glad you found this one! :)
I used to work midnights at a gas station across the road from a bar called the Aberdeen that played live music in the 80’s. After the bar closed the bands would play acoustic music and one of the bands they would play was Guns and Roses. They used to play Patience and it was one of my favourites
I had a leather jacket with a fringe, and a Levi's jean jacket vest I wore just like that, except I had a GUNS N ROSES 🌹, scroll patch on the back of it
Love love this band ........
A beautiful love song! ❤
Chooooooooooooooooooon!!!!..
..keep pumping out great content BP...🙏
I love GNR!! Thanks BP!
The music video was made on the "dumbed down" version. The album cut had extended guitars at the beginning and the solo.
"Appetite for Destruction" is a rare perfect album. Its worth a start to finish listen
Slash was using that riff in the beginning to practice chord progression, Axl liked it, Slash wasn't so sure, it stayed in and boom...it was never supposed to be one of the most recognizable riffs ever.
I remember an interview I saw a few years back where Slash still didn’t like that riff in the song because it was never meant to be part of a song.
@@skylarkn8701 but damn if you can't wake up an entire generation when they hear it!
Slash is such a spectacular guitarist!!!💜🎵🎼🎶🎸🎸🎸🎸
I went to see Guns and Roses in 1990 in they were so good in concert they didn't disappoint at all.
Knocking on Heaven’s Door should be next. Original by Bob Dylan but GNR rendition is amazing ❤
Professor of Rock always has good Rock history and trivia...
One of the best debuts albums of all time along with Boston. You can listen to each sone one right after the other and enjoy. It was so insanely popular when it came out, I was in High School at the time. The two albums that stood out was this and Hysteria.
Never ever thought of this song in that way.. first time im seeing this.. always looked at it as he's talking about his girl
Im from Dallas, TX, the full version was always played back then and still today.
Check out clips of them live in Tokyo 1991, NigjhtTrain,You Could Be Mine, November Rain and others and keep up the great work you do
You should be mine. That song really pushes his vocals over the top!
I wore this cassette out on my Walkman.
Nobody else could make a ballad this powerful. A lot of bands tried. Just such a TOUGH sound. These guys ROCK.
You did really good on this one and I understand the bit of confusion ❤
Love this tune!
You are correct.
I used to sing it as a lullaby to my nephews
It was so different when it came out! Standing in the high school parking lot rocking out! I miss the 80s!!
Weird tidbit - I watched Carrie Underwood sing this live. She was amazingly good. - Love this song, so many musical treasures to be entertained with.
I played this for each of my kids and grandkids the day they were born. :)
Guns and roses❤❤❤❤ nirvana são lendas❤❤❤❤ tem muito valor muito.
Great review, never took the time to break it down like!!!
Ahhhhh….1989, first job outta college, living in Times Square. What an amazing time!
