The first decent demo of this pedal I've seen on UA-cam. Sounds phenomenal.
Wahey! Thanks so much 😊 Its incredible!
I've had this pedal for a few years. It is without a doubt the best bass overdrive on the market. I run the gain on full, then the level, treble and blend at noon into a Bass Big Muff with the dry setting, level at noon, tone all the way down and drive at about 9 o'clock. The result is a perfectly preserved clean tone with an overdrive, fuzz and overdriven fuzz blended together. It is totally controllable and sits in a mix amazingly between two LOUD guitarists with roaring tube rigs.
Glad you're loving it!! It's honestly so good. I totally look for a transparent clean tone present in overdrive and this achieves just that 👌
@@JonnyDibble Yeah. Totally amazing pedal. If you didn't live across the pond, I'd ship you my Big Muff to try running it into.
Just copied this setup, it RIPS
@@Sh4dowFawx Oh, sweet! I'm actually using that setup to record tomorrow. I've experimented with other pedals, but nothing gives this tone like these two in tandem.
I didnt expected it to go somewhere near the Darkglass but it can. Plus the mellow tones. Oh my!
It's like a more transparent version! Although I think the Tech 21 DP-3X gets even closer to darkgkass territory (but of course at 3x the price of the soul food!)
Glad to finally see a good review of this pedal! I’ve had one for a couple of years and it’s a mainstay on my pedalboard for adding a bit of grit and for a boost. Another ace video my dude!
Thanks mate! 😁 it really is an awesome little pedal
Great review on a fine pedal. I use mine after a Sadowsky pre-amp and before a Solidgold Geranium Beta overdrive and various combinations of the three and sometimes altogether. The Bass Soulfood had some detractors on Talkbass forum when it first came out. People thought it didn't overdrive enough and didn't give it a chance sending it back the day they got it. Great price on it.
Great video as usual!!
After using several drives through the years, for my next project I just wanted a pedal which only add some drive without coloring my bass tone...and finally it seems that I found it
Superb demo as always Jonny! Great playing and awesome tones. Going to pick up one of these beauties… by the knobs! 😎 🍻
OUCH! haha thanks so much Paul, enjoy! 😊
Wooh! Amazing tones!
Cheers mate! It's a great pedal 👌
nice tones came out from that! Really nice pedal!
Super démo !! Merci encore.
Man, I really enjoyed the tone of this. Pleasantly suprised for the price.
It's an absolute steal!
@@JonnyDibble agreed
Some cracking tones in there. Seems like solid value.
Thanks! Yeah its incredible value 👌
I use a Microtubes 500 V2 and I’m not gonna lie this gets VERY close to one of my favorite settings. Making me rethink why I paid $750 for the Darkglass...
Mad! I wonder how they would compare in a mix 🤔
Because it's an amp?
@@craigmoran893 wow really? I didn’t even think of that. Wow. You should get a Nobel.
@@jaxonvictoria4345 one day.
I also like my Bass Fat Drive.
Great review Jonny, perfect sound at 5:53
Thanks very much! 😊
Awesome demo, Jonny. 😎🎸 this pedal sounds phenomenal. Especially with the Yamaha bass. I have an ehx hot wax and it sounds killer.
Thanks Alex!
That sounds excellent 👏
I’ve always seen these laying around and play them here and there. I see this video and now I’m considering to buy one!
I'm considering it too! Got a few more overdrive I want to demo first. LOVE this pedal though!
Cant believe the price! Budget thunder for sure! Nice riff at the end brother! Super heavy! Cheers!
Insane value. Thanks dude! 😁
Nice demo & great tone!
Thanks so much! It's an awesome little pedal ☺
Thanks. Sounds bloody good.
It does indeed 😍 thanks!
Had mine for a few years and it comes out of the cabinet often. That and my plumes are my go-tos for different bass drives. The -10 dB is for active pickups, becoming a common feature especially for EHX.
I reeeally want a Plumes! Heard great things 👍
Had this for a few years now - it has essentially replaced my 3 DG pedals - it's a fraction of the cost - super durable and as far as I am concerned, beefier than the DG. Love it. Won't leave my board for years to come. Add the Amptweaker Tightdrive Bass jr to the Bass Soul Food and TONE PERFECTION, IMO
It's honestly great!
I've had this pedal for a couple of years too. One other thing the BSF also does well is to deliver a simple clean boost, without overdrive distortion.
Yeah! Such a useful pedal!
Ok, u change my mind about this pedal, nice review
It's awesome 👌 Thanks!
I was really surprised with this pedal! Adding to the list of pedals to try 🙌🏻
It's a great little unit! (That's what she said?)
@@JonnyDibble that was pretty personal... 😭😂
Fantastic pedal & a super review Jonny. I use mine as a clean boost, all knobs at 12 o'clock except for the volume knob, which is set to about 2 o'clock.
Awesome, yeah with that treble knob, it has lots of uses! Thank you so much dude 😊
Sounds beautiful.
It really does! 😍 Thanks for checking out the video 😊
I bought my bass soul food two years ago and this little thing became an always-on-pedal in combination with my nano-battalion. It creates a huge sound.
Amazing! I can totally see this being an always on. It's pretty versatile 😃
How does it supplement Nano ? Nano Batalion already has a very nice distortion.
@@ArturBFPV
Distortion + Distortion = 🙂
I had originally considered getting this as my overdrive pedal, but I ended up getting a Fuzzrocious Demon King. I
don’t regret my purchase, but had I seen this video back then I would have picked up this pedal instead. Nice one Jonny!
I'll have to check out the Demon King! Thanks dude 😁
Bought this about 2 months ago. Love it love it love it.
Amazing! It's so good
THX 4 THE REVIEW
UR WELCOME 😁😄
I can't help but feel the pedal shone because of your core tone, but it did sound good.
For £50 used, I think it could be worth a punt.
Bought one of these today online to feed my fender jazz. Glad I did
Nice one! 😄
I've got one of these and its awesome. Especially with the blend knob.
Super handy! I may just have to get one for myself 👌
This is my od pedal for live stuff. Couple things go in to that: it's common and affordable therefore I am not terribly concerned if it gets drenched in beer (or worse). Sounds great in a band mix particularly when paired with an eq pedal. For recording it lacks some features you generally want. For example, I don't like how some of the gain is tied to the treble knob. Studio conditions are where higher end options like Darkglass are more desirable.
Hi Jonny,
I have this pedal since the EHX released it. If I put my pedalboard on stage this thing is %90 turned on. Thanks to this little monster I always have compliments on my sound. Another thing I like to do with it is stacking with EHX Pig Muff bass Pi. With these two pedals you can do everything from fundamentals to some crazy experimental noice sounds. I think for this price it's a miracle to have this quality.
I've heard SUCH good things about combining this with a fuzz! It really is an awesome pedal. Thanks man, but now you're making me miss my big muff!
@@JonnyDibble
I have my EHX Big Muff bass Pi since 2007 (the date it's released again ;) ) Used for a few specific sounds fo recording sessions and never used on stage for years till I have my EHX Soul Food bass. Sometimes it's really necessary to think like a guitarist about giving direction to your gain.
Now it's officiall; I am a Jonny Dibble subscriber
Now ots official: You are a legend 🙌 Thanks!
Excellent video, I became a subscriber. I just got the Soul Food. How would you recommend stacking it with a Bass Big Muff, which would come first?
Nice. Getting a bit of a Timmy C Rage vibe tone-wise. I've heard that the soul food plus a fuzz or distortion is quite good as well, throw a sansamp with dirt in there as well, that'd be a sound and a half.
Works well with my sansamp! I saw a few comments like that too. Really versatile pedal! Thanks for checking it out 😊
It' s my next buy soul food , great overdrive
Might have to get one myself!
It is my always on pedal. I use it so I can be up front in the mix and to give me a little bit of punch and clarity. I compine it with the distortion of MXR BASSdi and the tone is fuzzy, kind of. I really like it
Really value for money
Oooh nice! I had the M80, cool pedal! I might have to actually buy one of these myself... 🤤
Yes, a very good pedal! These two and the TC electronics Spectracomp is my pedal board.
Great review, man! Seems like a nice price for what you get so I'm definitely gonna check one of these out.
Do you know if the Treble knob affects just the drive signal, or both the dry and the drive?
Thanks very much man! Definitely great value 👌 I believe its just the treble of the drive
I use a Berhinger Vintage Tube Overdrive T0800 and it works pretty well but this actually sounds like what I'm looking for
Brother I think a five string would suit the aggressive modernism of these tones. Go for it!
Definitely! Think I'm FINALLY going to get a 5 string this year
Been on the hunt for a good bass OD for a while…. I wasn’t expecting it to sound that good! I just ordered one, it’s your fault Jonny 😂. Hopefully it’ll pair well with my SansAmp BDDI V2!
I'd like to formally apologise for the influence I've had hehehe (sorry not sorry) 😈
Since your comment was 3 months ago, how do they work together? I’m wanting to pair it with the BDDI and was wondering how nice they sounded together.
Sounds great! How does it combine with the Tech21 sansamps, eg. the bass driver?
I'm asking because you fed it into an Ampeg, which has supposedly a similar sound profile to those modeling DIs.
Feeds in SO well. Didn't use it here for transparency and wanted ti show the sound if the pedal more, but can confirm - it works really well with a sansamp
@@JonnyDibble Thank you! Seems I might have to buy one... eventually :)
I wanted to buy this pedal, but decided to get darkglass B3k. BTW this pedal sounds very good for me.
Both great pedals! Cheers ☺
Tried it years ago and hated it but it sounds good when you play it Jonny.
I love mine. Use it more than my Ampeg DI at momenr
Think i’ll get this to pair with my sansamp bass driver di and BOSS bass EQ pedal
Pairs brilliantly with a sansanp! Thanks for checking it out 😊
Excellent demo. I've been reading that there is a bit of a "pop" with the footswitch. Do you think this is a problem when considering this pedal, or is it minor?
Thanks very much! I didnt experience that myself when using it, but that would be a pain if it did have one. Depends how loudly that would come through an amp
@@JonnyDibble I have one that I run my Ibanez SR500 and SR405 with into a Genzler Magellan 800. Both basses have quite a concerning POP when hitting the pedal on. I've read it's due to a change in DC voltage but I just dont know how to fix it. Ive tried all combinations of pedals on my board, but its always the same. That said, once its on its a beautiful bass overdrive pedal.
PS both my basses are active
Sounds tasty
Tasty tasty tones!
sounds amazing, espeically for the price. I think I'm still going to save up for a darkglass X7 though.
For sure! Nice. I had the X ultra, great pedal!
Great video man!
that music man with overdrive is just wow.
I would like to hear what you think about Fame Octaver Monatsläufer. It is affordable analogue pedal.
Thanks mate! Oooh I've not heard of that one ! Will check it out cheers 😊
@@JonnyDibble try octave pedals! ones with octave up is great for bass, There is bunch of wierd ones, tc electronc sub n up works with your phone it goes around 80$ there are one that gives you octave up, down and the 5th! would like your opinion on this pedals for bass.
@@enzograz6660 I had the sub n up! Used it with distortion with a Boss LS2 for a Royal blood inspired sound 😊
I just can't afford sub n up, but one day, one day... Would you consider doing a series for lower price range pedals?
@@enzograz6660 definitely! I always try and focus more on the affordable market anyway 😄
🥳
Oooooh yesss, I think I found my bass driver
Woohooo!😁
idk dude, everything ehx has a place in my heart
Great company 👌
come on Jonny!!
NEARLY there! 😝
How do we think this would stack up with the sansamp bbdi v2 in the same chain?
Would have been nice to have it demo'd not only with the Gain ran at FULL ON but also more subtle, but maybe thats just my opinion :)
The -10db would be perfect for my Spector. The preamp on it is loud af.
This pedal is a steal! I regret selling mine...Its a very transparent overdrive, so it works better with good basses 🤣 Its also really powerful, and low noise.
I really enjoyed the combo of this pedal with the yammy, some really crisp tones there Jonny!
Transparent is how I like my overdrives 👌 sounds awesome!
Is that a soul food with chorus on 0:37?
It is indeed!
Nice sounds... but it's difficult to decide between this and the Bass Muff!
Depends on the desired effect! I treat fuzz a bit differently to overdrive. Both awesome though 🙌
Pulls all the bottom end out of my tone. Have to crank the bass on my active eq to compensate.
Johnny we need to talk about the hat. Omg FAB awesome! Where did you get it?
It is absolutely FAB. From the official Gerry Anderson website!
@@JonnyDibble class
Question for all: i have one, in headphones i can hear a drive with the boost of signal, in band with amp i can hear just a boost of signal without drive, it s normal for this pedal?
Every instrument has some overtones and harmonics that are audible in a solo setting, that would get lost in a mix sharing sonic space with other instruments. If you want more drive o would look into fuzz pedals or distortion.
@@jman1268 thanks man for this accurate answer.. i have already a dist pedal but i like an overdrive that boost signal.. maybe Darkglass will help me
I intend to buy that pedal. and knowing how he interacts with your musicman I know how he would do it with my squier dimension, but I am left wondering how he will get along with an Epiphone eb-0 and your misunderstood mudbucker pickup
It suits the P bass super well, I reckon it would fit really well with any kind of vintage style humbucking pickups. They're normally screaming to be played with a bit of dirt and this is pretty transparent sounding 👌
@@JonnyDibble the mudbucker is rare and therefore causes intrigue. hopefully you can try the Gibson sg or any Epiphone eb bass
Bass Klon. Might grab one-unless Wampler decides to make a bass Tumnus.
It's a great affordable option 👌
👍
😄😄😄
I’m off to my local pmt shop
New pedal day 🥳🥳🥳
Thats pretty much the Darkglass tone, there.
Yeah super modern sounding! I think there's a bit more transparency with this pedal though I love that. Especially for the price too!! 😍
Hey Jonny do you have the EMG geezers in your squier at the 9 second mark? That tone w the pedal is incredible?
I do indeed 😊 there's a few videos on them on the channel, including my latest video 😄
@@JonnyDibble thanks for the reply I just picked up a squier classic vibes 70’s P bass w a maple neck, really enjoy the content and your a funny dude! Subbed 👍🏼
@@hotwater8473 Ah nice one! The classic vibes are great. NOICE. Thank-you mate! 😍
@@JonnyDibble of course! Trying to decide between the geezers or the DiMarzio model P pups for this bass. I play mainly post rock, post hardcore type music.. decisions decisions. Might ad a different bridge as well down the road. I like to mod stuff.
@@hotwater8473 sounds like we're cut from similar cloth! 🤘 I think the EMGs are great, but not as warm as I'd like. I believe the 70s p bass has slightly less low end than the 60s (all in the wood) so I'd be tempted to go for the Dimarzio!? Having said that, I've not personally tried them nor the 70s P bass
It’s a Thiccboy Pedal
Good review. Keep the knobs coming J-Man. I will say that this particular pedal is not for me.
Thanks man! If there was a pedal for everyone, we'd all have one 😝
@@JonnyDibble so true. If you watch Premier Guitar’s rig rundown every player has different pedals. Vive la difference
Like a Darkglass, but with warm and alive tone for 1/3 price, bye Darkglass...
I own this pedal. It doesn't get that much overdrive btw... Listen carefully to his dry tone, it is already overdriven, maybe by tweaking the amp or something
No overdrive on the dry tone, just heavy pick playing ☺
@@JonnyDibble it sounds overdriven already, how can it be?
@@yooyoomine combination of the P pickup and then me digging in hard. Lots of attack to get that presence!
I have this pedal and I think it is completely overated. I doesn't do overdrive unless you put a boost in front of it and putting the gain knob at full. This makes the -10db switch and blend knob useless, because you need all the gain. It's also not transparent and it completely eats the low-end. The sounds on UA-cam created with this pedal come from other effects or amps in the signal chain. Edit to clarify: it doesn't do overdrive in my gear setup, which really dissapoints me.
Sorry to hear its not working well for you! Sounds on this video are totally from the pedal in front on an amp sim. I agree that the switch is a bit defunct
@@JonnyDibble thnx for your reaction. My intention of my comment was not discredit your video, but to inform viewers the rest of the signal chain matters. I'll edit my op to clarify.
Damn I paid 125
I dont care what anyone says Electric Bass beats Digital
Now made in China.
I find this example very false you already had gain running before enabling the pedal. give a false sense of what the pedal does
That's just pure pick attack, no gain in sight 😊
I agree with your judgement -i don’t think it needs a 'Bass' knob -it is already perfect.
i’ve already decided -Josh Scott educated me well enough -just watching these demos for fun now because
...i am buying it online TONIGHT!!!
