  • Follow along as TaylorMade Golf's Director of Sports Marketing ‪@trottiegolf‬ takes you inside the TaylorMade Tour Truck and takes you through step by step how they build Dustin Johnson's SIM driver. Trottie takes you through DJ's interesting grip choice (3R+2L), why he plays the certain shaft, what the loft of his driver head reads and just how much hot melt is added to give him that pure feel.

@notformebeaky it's not about the difficulty of the craft or subject. It's about how much care you put forth and the humility this man has to admit his "amateur" mistake rather than not pointing it out in the video in which the majority of viewers would've never thought of that to have been a mistake

@notformebeaky Not rocket science but he takes pride in his craft and it shows. He isn't egotistical and admitted his mistake. That is honest work and those guys (the Golfers ) rely on perfection from him to play as well as they do.

I worked in a golf store and assembled clubs around 14-18 years ago. It is amazing how far the technology and how quickly things can be done. It used to be 24 hours to cure epoxy before a club could be played. Now they can do it in 2.5 minutes... Amazing.

This may be the best “how to” video regarding building a club that I have ever seen. And there are a lot of decent teachers out there. You, sir, explained all the shorthand terms. (Eg. the terms that you used to describe the weight distribution of the shaft or the clubhead).
    Well done!

The only "exotic" thing he did that I don't do (as an amateur club maker) was the addition of hot glue inside the head. And also, I don't have a bending jig to change the lie of the driver. He measured it and it was per Johnson's spec, so we didn't see what he'd have done if it was off. I don't have all digital, state of the art instruments, but whether swingweighting, tipping/trimming, loft and lie measurement, etc, it can all be done at a workbench in your garage. None the less, it was fun to watch. The skill he has that we didn't see exhibited here was his knowledge of fitting and what to change in a club's spec to accomplish the player's need/goal. In other words, the back and forth with the player to get to the SPEC. Seeing those done by the tour truck guys and a tour level player is REALLY fun!

Some things that are really frustrating for me is that I can't get a driver head at exactly the loft I want (yes, 11 is also good for me), and because I like a 44.5" length, I cannot get the special hotmelt and different weight screws for my SIM driver. It was really nice when the Superquad etc had 4 weight screws to at least move the weight around a little more but they have gone away from that now.
