250 yard Flintlock Rifle Shooting

  • Опубліковано 10 сер 2019
  • I've always been interested in re-creating the long-range shooting accomplishments of America's Revolutionary war era riflemen, and this year's Historic Camp at Springbrook gave me the opportunity to shoot at 250-yard distant targets with a flintlock rifle.
In the video you'll see long range shooting, and the aiming techniques that got the job done.

Most people have no idea how far 250 yards is especially with iron sights.. that's a long shot !!!! 300 yards with my high-powered 280 deer rifle with a 3 by 9 Redfield 5 Star scope on it is a super long shot for me

Off-hand shooting really isn't that difficult, but the further the target is from the shooter, the more important it becomes to really lock that supporting arm in tight to the body to provide a stable rest for the rifle. That's how the 2nd shooter was able to hit the gong on his first attempt, so you can see how tightly he held the supporting arm against the body. The rifle barrel barely moved.

@@joeeckley5272 I know Mike very well. I also noticed there was no gallery noise, no other cross talk as they took their time discussing their shots, & even walked to the target & back. He also records his videos on his own, with his camera on a tripod. So, I am going to apply my logic and say he almost certainly conducted himself safely & made some truly remarkable shots. That's less of a stretch than your "half-cocked" ASSumptions. Then, you follow up that steller performance with a passel of more ASSumptions berating a fellow black powder enthusiast.
So, in order to avoid the chance of being logically incorrect, I am going to ask you one question: "Honestly, were you born an ASSH*LE, or did you work at it your whole life?"

"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! I greatly admire your gun & shooting ability! YA!! My only "claim to fame" was when I was 33 years old with the Joliet Muzzleloaders in Illinois about 1973 when I lived in Chicago. My rifle was a .58 custom made Hawken by Andy Fautheree in 1968. Don't remember the powder charge. 5 shots offhand at 100yds. Total group of 5 was 6 1/2"; 4 of the 5 were grouped in 2 5/8"!!! Score was 40 of 50. For me that was "Divine providence" as I was never a very good shot! My caplock Hawken was a very beautiful curly maple stock & gorgeous browned barrel with a heavy (1 1/8") Bill Large barrel & Al Osterman lock. At 80 years old now, I still have that rifle in near mint condition!!! I'd love to carry it with me in my coffin! "Gesundheit"!!!!!

I've been using Graf powder for the last 5 or 6 years. My primary complaint is that it seems to fowl the bore more than others I've used. Keep in mind I was still using Dupont until I purchased this from Graf. The old stash eventually ran out. I had paid $4 a pound in the '80's for Dupont, so I was alarmed at the current prices. Graf was a lot cheaper than the others AND it's made in Germany, so I stocked up on it. But, loading is harder than it used to be.

    • @michaelrobinson1945

I was quite wrong about Graf Black Powder. After watching Mikes video about having fowling problems with a certain rifle and curing the problem by polishing the bore...I gave it a shot. That bore was still easy to load after 12 shots. It might have taken an hour, altogether. Best thing I could have done.

    Yeah!
That's better than I can do.
Do you remember that "Outdoor Life" article from the 70s about the three custom flintlocks? One was a swivel barrel albeit rifled/smoothbore. That ruined me for modern stuff as far as blackpowder goes.
Muzzleloaders are wood and steel... no plastic.
    Have fun.

Got faith in ya Mike. You'll get that little snot. If for no other reason than it's feeling too safe. Lol

It must be very satisfying hitting it. Unlike a modern gun that you can quickly load and shoot a lot of.
