  • The pioneering electric car company Tesla has suffered a series of very public challenges since the beginning of this year. Its high-profile CEO Elon Musk called this a period of "production hell." Most of the troubles revolve around the company's Model 3 sedan, its first mid-priced, mass-produced electric car. Musk takes "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King on a tour of his Silicon Valley factory. It is the first time network cameras were allowed inside the production line.

      Andrew G
      They think they can go up to 10K per week. At that rate they will build half million cars every year. Also they make a ton of money on the cars, so as production ramps up they will soon start to make money. What you see as "losing money" is called "investment". Or you think gigantic factories are cheap?
      And according to everyone the upcoming Model Y will be an even bigger hit. They will likely make billions on the reservations alone.
      In two years there will likely be close to a million Model 3 on the road, and the Model Y will be in production too. Just as the semi and the new Roadster. And the competition only then will be where Tesla is now. Currently there's nothing on the market that can touch Tesla. A few prototypes has potential, but only if they can make them soon and in high volumes.
      Also since dieselgate I'm done with VW, won't buy from them anything ever.

      His main question will continually be: which part of the process is currently limiting the production, and how do we make that faster?
      If you keep doing that, you will get the quick ramp in production that would be best for Tesla and, frankly, for all of us who want to see a clean energy future.

    Elon occupies rare space based on the fact that he will admit mistakes, and then follow it up with a commitment to correcting those mistakes.
    Think about that for a minute.
    He admitted to trying to add too many features all at once...and then he corrected Course, knowing that those features will happen at some point but not now.
    He’s so committed to correcting those mistakes that he is willing to do whatever is necessary to make those corrections happen.
    Can anyone name another CEO who openly admits to any of this?
    This guy knows every moving part in any of his Manufacturing Facilities....
    Can you name another CEO that can do that?
    Elon is so freaking committed to the success of his Companies that he will not fail...he’s not in it for the Wealth.

      Musk is a dreamer and a snake oil salesman. His promises are constantly exposed as lies and unicorn dreams.
      Beyond that electric cars using existing technology are a fad gimmick at best. They rely on quickly depleting rare earth elements to function and are powered by and large by coal. They distract from technology that could be game changing like diesel hybrids that could achieve 90+mpg and not require a complete rework of our electrical grid.

      and yet there is no stopping coal production plants, like one that powers his factory. coal plants pollute more than cars. musk could create batteries+solar to power cities, like he did for canberra in australia. as for cars, cities need to remodel their infrastructure to use cars less, a good example of a city that needs to reshape is LA.

      Chocolate Milk. I agree in part with you but remember the Gigafactory produce huge part of it's energy with solar energy but the charging station a lot of them are coal energy dependent, but that's not up to him, that depends of the politicians that rule the state becouse instead of a coal mine they should try to generate clean energy by solar, wind or water dams.

      This is what most people fail to see when they judge him. He could have just bought some stocks and a cool house near a beach in 99 and just chilled it out forever. Or he could have easily started some tech company like facebook or netflix or whatever and made billions and had fun. But he didn't. He CHOSE greatness and selflessness but that comes at a price. You'll have to work harder and against a world that's not willing to change. It's my belief that we essentially gave up on fighting climate change and Mars missions until Elon showed us that it is possible. He's showing the world with the Model 3 that electric cars are as good or even better than ICE cars at the same price. With Falcon rockets he showed that we can make space more and more accessible than we thought it was.
      Just want to say to those who criticize him, just consider the alternative once. Why didn't he start a tech company? Its much much much easier than starting a rocket company or a car company. He even had an idea for a search engine before Google existed. Why didn't he just retire with his millions of dollars? The only answer is he chose the hard way for a purpose: A better tomorrow for all of us.

    Tesla is already a success. They made the Roadster, the Model S, the Model X and now the Model 3 is out on the streets.
    They got other manufactures to follow suit and produce EVs. Even GM which could could have had the Electric car market monopoly 18 years ago with it's EV1 has followed suit of Tesla with it's Bolt EV.
    Even despite of conditions our economy was 10 years ago when gas prices were sky high there is now a thriving market for EVs which can be largely thanked to Tesla opening up that market.

    I just sat in a Model 3 yesterday, the car is incredible! My first impression is that the paradigm of transportation has changed forever. There's a revolution about to occur before our eyes in automobile manufacturing, design, & maintenance. The design aesthetic of the Model 3 surpasses and is unlike any other vehicle I've been in: a spacious interior with ample legroom and headroom (I am 6'4 and sat in the front seat while by chance another 6'4 person sat behind me with no issues), a full battery each morning with 310 miles of range, panoramic roof, over the air software updates, and all powered by the solar panels on the roof of my house. Goodbye oil cartels, oil barons, and oil changes. These are fascinating times we live in!

      I'm a huge fan of the vision of Musk and Tesla and SpaceX, but I'd question the term successful. Pretty sure Tesla has only been profitable in one quarter out of its entire existence if memory serves. That's hardly "successful" by any definition. What he has succeeded in is generating a huge amount of hype and energy around his branding and products, but eventually his companies have to turn a profit. Hype and energy can only make venture capitalists, banks, investment firms, etc. pour money into your companies for so long before they expect to start seeing returns. If Tesla doesn't find a way to start being profitable and the cash reserves dry up, it'll have no choice but to go into bankruptcy, which would be a huge shame. That's why he's under such pressure - huge investors are getting tired of pouring money into a company that burns through cash.

    • @wardoc22
      @wardoc22 6 років тому +2

      Define successful

    • @jzarlejz
      @jzarlejz 6 років тому

      wardoc22 I'd think that the definition of a for-profit company is to turn a profit. It's not a charity, not an altruistic venture dedicated to the furthering of science. It builds cars to sell to make money - regardless of all the other vision and hype around the company. I'm not calling the company a failure, most companies lose money for years as they learn how to be efficient and profitable, and Musk has made statements claiming he believes the company will turn a profit by the end of the year; however, Musk has missed virtually every promise and timeline he's set for the company. I wouldn't call the company a failure, but hype is only going to sustain the company so long. Musk has shown a history of casting grand visions that generate huge hype and cause the stock price to skyrocket while delivering very few of them.

    A young woman who works on the model 3 production line had an idea on how she could make the production line more efficient. So she mentioned it to the production line manage who told her to put it in writing and she handed him her idea in writing roughly 5 hours later saying maybe we could try it in a week or so. She about dropped to the floor when the line manager said no not in a week. We'll try this tomorrow on the production line and they did and it improved efficiency just as she said it would. She got a nice chunk of coin and was told " any more ideas? Speak up right away ".
    True story but it illustrates it's not just Elon finding ways to improve the production line.

He is constantly juggling so many things in multiple companies, but when there's an issue with something, he's not afraid to get in there and focus his attention on overseeing the work and getting it done himself if need be. He's intimately involved with his work and passionate about seeing it get done right, rather than trying to turn a quick buck and the consequences be damned.
