  • The API vintage 1970s console at London's RAK studios has inspired musicians, engineers and listeners for decades. Wes shares its unique qualities.
RAK Studios rakstudios.co.uk/ is one of the UK's best-known recording studios. It was founded in 1976 by English record producer Mickie Most. There are four studios at RAK, all of which are kitted out with classic, top-of-the-range recording equipment.
The Vintage Musician www.thevintagem... gives musicians insights on old school gear, techniques and new school approaches.
Wes Maebe's www.wesonator.com clients have included UB40, Gabrielle Aplin, Elliott Randall, Ann Peebles, Sting, Alexandra Burke, Melanie C, Chaka Khan, Robert Plant and Cat Stevens.
Morris Michael ('Mo' | who is heard singing in this video) was born in London’s Hackney Hospital in 1959, the son of immigrants from Antigua who had arrived in the Windrush era to find a better job than cutting sugar cane. In the 80s Mo Mo recorded with artists such as Scritti Politti, The Blow Monkeys, Tina Turner, Ruby Turner, Evelyn Thomas, Precious Wilson, Imagination, Belouis Some, Hazel O’Connor, Living in a Box, Techno Twins, Errol Brown, Samantha Fox, Quincy Jones, Paul Weller, Wham!, Altered Images, Suggs, Erasure, Yazz and others. He did a session with Steely Dan producer Gary Katz, a song called “Rhythm of Life” which was recorded by an artist called Hugh Harris, who was going out with Sinead O’Connor. The track was in the movie “Uncle Buck”.
In January 2013 Morris returned to music full time, since when he has been writing like fury, started gigging again, joined The Fireside Sessions in Southern Ireland and is rapidly building a reputation as a writer and troubadour in the style of one of his heroes, James Taylor.

Who tracked on a vintage API and didnt print the EQ. Great lesson to learn here. The other one is, check the monitors. If one system is 2 dB up on the low end and the other 2 dB down, it´s probably no fun to mix there if you had the tracking experience.
Heard these stories too often. And i cant believe that if you put your console in the most useful place, put the monitors on the bridge, and have a flat (or best) response at the listening position. Just to think about. Not said that this is the case here.
The story reminds me of that problems. Thanks for the video, great console.

of course all that dialled in sound disappeared when they took the tracks to another room. Big mistake to have recorded in a room like that and have not recorded the EQ/outboard, and then to be surprised that it sounds different in a different room! Lack of engineering confidence during tracking. Surely could have a set up a pre-fx dry send for any tracks where he wanted a clean option later on.
Sticking 10k worth of mics up on an acoustic guitar should allow you to get a decent sound without EQ too, I'd say.
      Not impressed!

I worked at RAK once. Cool place! I didn't work in the studio pictured above though. I worked in the Big studio with another API downstairs in the front of the building.

Could not possibly agree more. I had a session with the new API Box and my rough mixes sound better than music I've made inside the DAW realm. It is eons better and I didn't do anything in the way of mixing. API is a flavor I really dig too.

Can you do a video on the Smart C2 I see in the background there? Also, Can you try get your hands on some CAPI Preamps and maybe do a comparisson or give your thoughts on the API vs Capi Pre's?

I have to be honest...I am very disappointed in this video. There was a lot of TALK about how great a full band sounded coming through the API and then what do we get to hear? An acoustic guitar and vocal arrangement.

Agreed, he didn’t stop talking at all. He could of showed us what it sounds like not talked about it. I’ve mixed on vintage api boards so I know what they sound like.

I didn't find out much about "How an API Console Sounds," but I did find out quite a lot about how a long haired hipster in a fedora sounds.

Too much yakkity yak, not enough uninterrupted music.
But I understand... it's hard not to gush about gear like this.

***** Yeah it aint like they were mass produced or practical purchases for most people.
Looks like you too were expecting an A/B or something along those lines. "How an API Console Sounds" is more like "How an API Console Sounds (To An Earnest But Talkative Dude)"
5+ minutes of talking with about 20seconds of isolated music at the end. Oh well. Better to avoid responding to angry individuals looking for fruitless argument, or maybe just having a bad day. Either way.

I agree. He talked for a long time about recording a full band and then all we heard was an acoustic guitar/vocal arrangement. LAME!
