Inhumane treatment of this poor man. He could have lived many more good years.
It seems the patients in nursing homes that have alot of loved ones visiting them, and talking with the staff and the bosses about their relative, those elderly people have a much lower risk of being abused, than the ones who don't get any visits.
I read that from a comment made by someone who had worked in these kinds of nursing homes.
Others with similar backgrounds and jobs agreed with her.
Oh God we need to respect the elderly. And treat them with love and care. Not mistreat them.

    1) Leukemia, not dementia, but he tried to leave? Even a person with no cognitive disabilities can become disoriented or generally upset, but I do wonder if he tried to leave because of the conditions.
    2) Billionaire CEO? Of course he doesn't want to staff his locations properly because that would mean less money for him at the end of the day. The love of money...
    3) I understand that nursing facilities can be horrible. At the same time, not everyone has the means to be able to quit their jobs and take care of a parent (someone that they never _chose_ to have like one chooses to have a child) full-time. Bring in zero money and somehow use Social Security that is intended for the parent only to now pay for the parent _and_ the caregiver. That wouldn't work. There's always going to be a need for nursing homes so those nursing homes need to be held to a better standard. Regular acute hospitals certainly have their issues, too, but it seems that nursing home standards are fewer and enforced even less.

It is so hard to care for our loved ones at home. So many of us are living paycheck to paycheck or work so much we have no time to care for our elderly. As a nurse, I would not want my parents in a nursing home. Using ativan is dangerous with the elderly. Most importantly is the facility understaffing. It is happening everywhere. Hold the company responsible because I gaurentee that more money is being spent on management salaries than patient care. Healthcare companies are 100% aware of the understaffing. If they can get away with it, which they do, the less they spend on payroll expense. They could care less about patient care and safety as long as they see that money rolling in.

Unfortunately this happens so much more than you know. My mother-in-law was in a nursing facility temporarily after a surgery and most of the elderly were like zombies. When an elderly patient is demanding (asking for what they need) or combative they over medicate. This can cause strokes and death. We got my mother-in-law out of there when we started noticing personality changes in her due to what I believe was over medicating. I'm sorry for your loss.

The state "inspects" the nursing home I'm in. What happens during "inspection" is this: they talk to administration and staff, all of who lie like rugs under threats of losing their jobs if they tell the truth. All staff, everyone on the payroll, is on the job the day of the "inspection" so it appears the nursing home has adequate staff. I often wonder if the state wonders how many sets of identical twins work here, as staff moves from floor to floor as the "inspection" procedes. None of these "inspectors" talk to the patients. Oh, no....we could tell them how things really are here, and that can't be risked! Incidentally, I'm here because my son who used to help me died. I can't walk, and I have several serious medical issues. I need much in the way of care.

I will take a little offense to that as when I was 18 (I'm in my 60's now) I worked in a nursing home...and yes I did care. I thought about becoming a nurse at one time, but I was scared of needles and I figured that if I was scared of getting shots, how could I give someone else shots? Got over my fear...but it took a few years. I agree better training is needed, better screening, more staffing, better pay. Unfortunately some kind of other place is sometimes needed. Sometimes people need more care than relatives can give. My Mom has dementia...she refused to come live with any of her kids...I think that was because we told her the one requirement was that she had to stop smoking...that was a no go. She is in year 3 of this...we finally got some daytime help earlier this year because we were all having a hard time with her...very demanding..very demeaning to people that are helping her...and that is being said nicely. Lots of stories that I could tell, but I won't. Lets just say that if I had to take care of her myself I would have been at the end of my rope by now. Sometimes have to think of your own mental health. Our running joke is that we will all be dead..Mom will still be living. It is one thing to take care of someone who treats you decent and you can see some light at the end of the tunnel. Dementia can last many years...things only get worse. It takes a special person to deal with some of this long term....after what we have been through I would never want to make anyone feel guilty because they feel they can't do it anymore.

Giving anyone drugs not prescribed by their doctor would land anyone in jail/prison. this is very commonplace in facilities for most if not all clients to be over medicated against their will. It was not unusual for me to have 30+ patients to care for. You would have to choose who needed the most help because it was impossible to care for all of them. Always under staffed and half of the staff doing a bad job. Nurses not giving meds which gives the doctors the wrong information on blood tests so they increase the meds. One place had us signing out antibiotics like they were narcotics because they weren't being given as ordered.
