Oh, I see! In the States, we also give Christmas gifts to our mailman (your postman), hair stylist, manucurist, mechanic, and other people who provide services throughout the year. You do it in a more organized way, on Boxing Day. I like it!
My father loved Christmas and firmly believed more is more. There were swags and wreaths everywhere, but I was the one who had to make them! I used to find that heavy-duty floristry tape was better than wire for making the base layer. It made the base layer more stable. I then used to wire in the next layer of greenery. For over-door swags, I always used hang mistletoe...in hope, oh the disappointment, it was rarely used! I used to use a wide variety of decorative items, including walnuts, which I often gilded, and also dried flowers, leaves, and poppy heads that I collected during the year. Dried limes also work well alongside dried oranges, and the smell is more interesting. Another thing that I did was to make up small bags, like lavender bags, but with Christmassy pot pourri, and hide them in the indoor wreaths (more really did mean more) so that everytime the door was opened it caused a waft of Christmas. These days, living alone, I do not even bother to put up a tree for myself, but I like to see how others decorate their houses. Merry Christmas to all...
Not sure if this has already been said but wrapping the lights around a rectangular piece of cardboard will keep it from getting tangled. Makes the whole process less murdery!! LOL!
Canadians have Boxing Day too. Aren't you supposed to put the tree in a container of water so it doesn't dry out? We have really good plastic stand that holds our tree up perfectly and allows us to put water in the bowl at the bottom so the tree stays well hydrated all the time it's up.
Water or damp sand would be better, yes, but the tree was freshly cut, and if the room is cool, (as I think they’ve said) it can be ok. Happy Christmas.
Luke projects ideal husband vibes ie “I don’t really trust what you’re doing, but I’m going to let you do it anyway & I might help you, to prove whether it’s going to work or not”… 😂 On another note, I am watching from the Hawaiian islands! Aloha! 🌺 🤙🏽
Swags and or wreaths aren’t just a British thing. North America ( Canada/ USA ) make awesome swags you see in homes or sometimes outside on doors. They sometimes change wreaths or swags for each season. I think wreaths / swags add an old fashion charm to many rooms too.
Oh how I love watching you and all you show me and us ! I’m feeling rather sad because our Daughter just texted me she’s not coming at all for Christmas 😢 were only 15 minutes at the most away !! She’s young, 26 But old enough. We’re 66 and someday we aren’t going to be here for her to come home to😢 There’s never been anything to create feelings of anger and such. Yes she has to work BUT not the whole 48 hours ! We her parents are very open minded and we can celebrate any day ! And we’re willing to. She just doesn’t want to. Anyway your Christmas Tree and putting it in your home and the homemade stand was, is enchanting and full of love ! Your wreaths everything BROGHT a smile to my Heart ❤ Funny Thought !! For years I herd Boxing Day from other British you-tubers I follow !! I always wondered why Britain would have a Big Holliday the Day after Christmas!! Like you know Boxing is a sport here. I never thought of a BOX and Gifts ! What a lovely way of doing things !!! Made me laugh ! I always thought of tons of people in a stadium I’ll shouting for whomever they want to win made me think of Hamid Ali. Not golden and Red bows !!!! XoxoxDeb In California 🎄🎄❤️❤️🎄🎄🎁🎁🎁
I adore your Christmas tree! In my 63 years of living, I’ve never put up an artificial tree, or even purchased a real one. Every year we find one of natures gifts on our property. Scraggly, crooked, or sparse, it doesn’t matter. It wouldn’t be Christmas any other way! Thanks so much for the very entertaining video! Merry (Happy) Christmas from upstate NY!
I just love how real you all are. Yes, the house is ancient, but that means it is resilient. I love the beautiful old house and furniture. I love that you all dress practically and wear old clothes sometimes. If things are good, in good repair, no point in buying tons of new clothes or furniture... Things can be mended, repaired. I am your kind of people, even though I don't live in an ancient mansion, or a not so ancient mansion even. Lol. I suppose my British genes make all this seem very homey to me.
Julie installs Christmas tree lights like she installs plumbing. Way to go Raymond, oldest worker on the estate brings the ten foot tree in, builds a custom stand and sets it up good job.
Happy Holiday! Love your tree! A proper Norwegian spruce at last! (no shrubs no plastic! YAY!) Your English traditions of foraging and making wreaths and swags are very much like Scandinavian ones. It smells so lovely doesn't it? We make doormats from spruce as well (to shake off the snow) and little woodland advent arrangements with moss, four candles ( for each advent sunday) and litte red mushrooms, berries and tiny gnomes, which I think we share with Germans as well. I love a natural tree, with ornaments from all the years gone by rather than all the "designer/department store" plastic trees too coordinated and stuffed with new collections of trinkets every year. It's the time for childish joys, textures and scents, goodies, lovely hymns peaceful candle light and higgledy piggledy magic! Boxing day is a wonderful tradition, we should all adopt immediately! 💝 Merry Christmas and a most happy end of the year to all of you! LOVE /Jo ❤️
Germans can make themselves useful: they bring Blighty many handy things like royal families and, seasonally, Prince Albert's Der Weihnachtsbaum. Festoons of joy and evergreens to you both.
NEVER have to untangle Christmas lights again! As you remove them, wrap them around a hunk of carboard (salvage the side of a large carton from Christmas presents/deliveries/whatever. A little slot cut in one edge is where you can start attaching the "top" of the string, and put the plug-end into another slot. Lay your board full of lights on top of your Christmas decor bin. No more tangles, no more hassle, and easy to string them up next year, unwinding from the board as you go. You can also buy plastic Christmas tree light string holders, but cardboard is typically free, lasts for years. Do the same with your outdoor lights.
We are new fans and absolutely love the updates and videos here in the Pacific Northwest. Living in a region where working forests and forestry are a given part of everyday life, I wanted to make two suggestions, if you don't mind, about the trees you passed on. 1. Maybe limb those bottom limbs off of the trunk. It will encourage growth at the top making it a good candidate, if it survives the trunk damage, for next year. 2. It might be worth planting a couple dozen trees well spaced for future trees in a decade and beyond. While we are particular to Douglas Firs here, I am certain there are different ones that would be wonderful for the future use of the estate. Was a lot of fun to watch the Christmas prep on Christmas day - Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you all!
Aloha Luke & Julie! It would be great to go select a tree out of your yard! Here, they ship them to Hawaii in vast containers. They're beautiful & VERY expensive! My tiny tree (3ft), was $55😳this year! Your tree, wreaths & swags, all came out beautiful!😊🎄Merry Christmas!
I don’t want to be dramatic, but many characters in this channel are tops. I’ve recruited my parents to this channel. I agree Raymond is awesome!!! But I would like to stress that I love the British’s love for wonky or hickeldy pickeldy Christmas tree. In the USA everything is so manicured and “perfect”. The hickeldy pickeldy vibes with me truly.
Good Afternoon ! Lovely video ! I wonder if there are any plans to plant small evergreen trees as provision for future Christmas trees ? It was said during the video that Luke's parents were thought to have planted the trees shown . It would be a valued tradition to continue , for your children , and generations to come ...also good to replace ones cut down previously . Wishing you all good health and joy !
Do you have a product over there called WILT-STOP? You spray it on any wreaths or swaths to keep them looking fresh. It's made from pine resin, all natural & I love it!! Leaves a heavenly smell!
I love Julie's Christmas tree lighting instructions. I can't stop laughing 😂 Julie reminds me so much of my mom seriously they have the same personality
Watching this in Milwaukee, WI 2022/12/23 while the it's -7F and the winds are gusting at least 30 mph. It looks so warm there. Love the tree and other decorations are beautiful.

For every Christmas tree you take, plant two! Since that hasn't been done, perhaps it's time to consider using some of your land for a Christmas tree farm for your future business venture as well as maintaining "household stocks!"
So funny story about the Cook Memorial in Hawaii. Every year the British government sends an entourage to mow the 5 foot by 5 foot memorial of grass yet the monument has been under water for about the past 40 years. 🙈
I really enjoy watching you all navigate the owning and running of such a beautiful Manor house. You are very fortunate to have such a competent staff to help with the running of Mapperton and I just love Raymond, he is so sweet and humble. I would love to visit one day!
We have a similar custom here in the Southern Appalachian mountains in the USA called the "Greening of Christmas." ua-cam.com/video/p_oxA-oHMds/v-deo.html. FYI, cats decide which room will be "cat free." Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from across the pond.🐱🎄🎉
Julie I was watching the Christmas special from the tv show and you stated many times the many British traditions that are not done in the US. Maybe in the Midwest, but I assure you, garlands and mince pies are definitely part of Christmas on the East Coast. Perhaps it is being part of the original 13 colonies. I would suggest you take a look at the decor and food served in Colonial Williamsburg and you will see how those same traditions are woven into our great American tapestry. I have been making garlands since before you were born either with bought roping or roping we made ourselves and decorated. This was in New Jersey. We raised our natural elements game when we moved to Williamsburg, VA. Take a look, it may give you some ideas of blending both countries.
As a New Zealander I found the letters about Captain Cook to be really interesting. Please make another video. Would love to hear more about that connection. Thanks!
Watching your videos at Christmas seems to be a new tradition for me. I'm watching now while I wrap presents. Thank you for all the hard work producing content that shares your history, lives and traditions. Have a fun and happy Christmas 🎄
Hope you do way more decorations next year. All the mantles should be decked out. Lights & garland. Every door should have a wreath. Outdoor gardens should all be lit up. 🎄
Thank you, Luke and your staff for bringing us into your home and sharing Christmas decorations and fun with all of us… Holiday greetings from San Francisco Bay Area/ USA🎉
ooohhh NOOO You CUT the PINE TREE🌲🙈😩 You know there are nice artificial ones👍 OR.... you can make your XMAStree with a tree with its roots in a big pot. No need to cut!!😠
As a custom floral decorator with 56 years in the business under my belt may I say that I LOVE your Christmas tree?!! Beautifully done! Merry Christmas to you all at Mapperton.
I have so enjoyed your channel. As a fellow American, its nice to see one of our own there. LOL. I love that you are so interested in preserving your beautiful home and history. Hope to get there one day, again.
To get your trees back just replant 2 or 3 saplings for every tree that gets cut down and in no time at all you will have your plantation back along with beautiful wildlife!
Amazing effort, looks like the one day open predicts for great success for next year. Still so sad that a day had to be cancelled for safety reasons. I wish all the Mapperton staff and Julie the best. I guess we will need to support everyone by ordering products online to compensate for this cancellation to some extent! Everyone please order some Mapperton items and support local vendors in other ways!
Merry/Happy Christmas to you all. Thank you for all of the great content and information that you've given all of us over the past year. I look forward to seeing so much more from Mapperton in 2023.
Love your tree but it's ok to take your pruners to those wayward lower branches and narrow the width of it a bit. I live in the US and we make swags for inside and out. Your wreath turned out fantastic. Love this. Thanks for sharing. ❤️
We celebrate Boxing Day here IN Newfoundland, Canada as we were British Colony up until March 1949. Have a. very Christmas and a bright and Happy New Year.
Canadians celebrate Boxing Day on December 26th each year. In Canada it is not for giving boxes (gifts) to servants but it is simply an extra bank holiday added to Christmas. Unlike on Christmas Day, shops are open for special Christmas sales. Lots of Canadians host "open house" parties for friends and also invite relatives over in the afternoon for appetizers and charcuterie.
Watching this intriguing episode again and love the history of Luke's ancestors as it is so relevant in British history. I hope your future generations are able to look back and acknowledge these events that become their history and in particular all the ways you are developing Mapperton and the hard work that goes into it in doing so. xx
I could smell the greenery as you were decorating! Lovely traditions. I empathize over the lights... you may want to invest in one of those Christmas light organizers where you wind the lights around a reel thing... saves hours every year!
I knew that too, I Googled it years ago. Unfortunately many younger British people have no idea what it really is, they think it is a shopping sales day.
I wish you all very very happy christmas and ı would like to say thank you Luke & Julie , every single video you guys are sharing is being such a delight for me they all really nice and fun. My greatest wishes always with you my lord and my lady 😊
Your California Montagu cousin really needed some holiday cheer. Life's been stressful lately but watching these lovely Christmas videos has really lifted my spirits and put me in a holiday mood 💖
Don't ask me how or why but somehow, as a child, I got the idea that boxing day was the day all the British rabbits gathered together for boxing matches. I was so surprised when I learned what it really was. Silly me. I'm an American BTW. Also, thanks for sharing your videos. They are quite nice.
Start planting Christmas trees now for future generations.
Boxing day the day after Christmas! Where you give the old to the people that work for you the day off the day after Christmas!
Oh, I see! In the States, we also give Christmas gifts to our mailman (your postman), hair stylist, manucurist, mechanic, and other people who provide services throughout the year. You do it in a more organized way, on Boxing Day. I like it!
Wonderful definition of Boxing Day. I never ever knew what it was until now thank you. 🎁🎄🎀

I enjoyed your description of decorating almost as much as the video. Wish you would gift yourself with even a tiny table tree!
Thank you!
Not sure if this has already been said but wrapping the lights around a rectangular piece of cardboard will keep it from getting tangled. Makes the whole process less murdery!! LOL!
What a charming, lovely couple. And great to see an American lady immersing herself so well in British life.

Tired I was; my head would go
Nodding under the mistletoe

No footsteps came, no voice, but only,
Just as I sat there, sleepy, lonely,
Stooped in the still and shadowy air
Lips unseen-and kissed me there.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Australia
MERRY XMAS 🧑🎄🌲XXXX
My brain feels slightly rearranged after watching you two putting up lights on the Christmas tree.
Round and round is the ONLY way! Great tree. 🎄🥰
I tried the up and down years ago. It looked like a municipal tree in the town square and came straight off!
WOW! A guy who actually puts lights on a tree! (Merry Christmas!)
Lol
The snow, wreaths, swags, real tree and decorations look amazing.
Here at Boughton House we have an annual Christmas Tree sale. We sold just over 500 trees this year. Maybe you should try it next year.🎄🎄🎄
For every Christmas tree you take, plant two! Since that hasn't been done, perhaps it's time to consider using some of your land for a Christmas tree farm for your future business venture as well as maintaining "household stocks!"
In Ireland Boxing Day is St. Stephen's Day! Merry Christmas from a Chicago expat in Ireland, where they also say "Happy Christmas"!
I absolutely love watching you preserve the history of your house and also provide unique experiences to the community! Love from America!
For next year, get a power strip to plug the lights into and a remote control for the Christmas tree lights. It so much easier with them.

Same! I was hoping they’d do traditional British Christmas stuff as an American, plus, how Mapperton does it. Beautiful tree.

I hope your future generations are able to look back and acknowledge these events that become their history and in particular all the ways you are developing Mapperton and the hard work that goes into it in doing so. xx
The wonky wiggly piggly trees are the best. They look as great decorated, yet have a little personal charm.
I could smell the greenery as you were decorating! Lovely traditions. I empathize over the lights... you may want to invest in one of those Christmas light organizers where you wind the lights around a reel thing... saves hours every year!
Lovely Tree. Merry Christmas to all at Mapperton. 🌲⛄
I knew that too, I Googled it years ago. Unfortunately many younger British people have no idea what it really is, they think it is a shopping sales day.
Y’all should’ve cut the bottom into small thin rounds. They could’ve used them in the wreaths or make coasters with them 😊
I wish you all very very happy christmas and ı would like to say thank you Luke & Julie , every single video you guys are sharing is being such a delight for me they all really nice and fun. My greatest wishes always with you my lord and my lady 😊
Our pleasure! Happy Holidays!
Fantastic video I just love watching anything Mapperton. Decorations are beautiful. ♥️
Glad you enjoyed!
Your California Montagu cousin really needed some holiday cheer. Life's been stressful lately but watching these lovely Christmas videos has really lifted my spirits and put me in a holiday mood 💖
Oh, this is so homey and sweet! Feels very warm. And higgledy-piggledy, and cozy!
Those two are so funny🤣🤣😒. She keeps him in line:)
Don't ask me how or why but somehow, as a child, I got the idea that boxing day was the day all the British rabbits gathered together for boxing matches. I was so surprised when I learned what it really was. Silly me. I'm an American BTW. Also, thanks for sharing your videos. They are quite nice.
I mean… is there anything you can’t do, Julie?!? Your swag and wreath skills are on point. Really lovely!
I am all for the “wonky” tree, it is fantastic! Merry Christmas 🎄 from Maine.
