It's great to see a UA-cam reaction to this spectacularly underrated movie. It's like Aliens in water. This movie's release was delayed due to Disney purchasing 20th century Fox. Disney just dropped it in theaters in January of 2020 a week before the official Covid lockdown, with no advertising. TJ Miller had a scandal that led to him being "canceled" after filming but before release, thus the reviews were a condemnation of him not a fair review of the film. Such a shame it deserves better. I hope it'll become a cult classic. Thanks for reacting to it.

I have a theory that this whole movie is basically meant to be a meditation on the theme of bravery and courage under pressure, ha ha. Every character has at least one moment when they are extremely courageous, usually in order to benefit the other characters... That scene where Nora and Emily drag Smith along the ocean floor, in the pitch blackness and in all that pressure, unable to even see if they were walking in the right direction, was like a little ode to courage and tenacity. By the way, if you feel like being total masochists about movies like this, Deepwater Horizon and Deepstar Six both have a lot of scenes about the terrifying pressure at the bottom of the sea. Also The Abyss, of course... anyway, yah, this entire film made me wish I had paid better attention in physics class, just to be able to define some basic terminology and therefore think clearly and intelligently about the nightmarish pressure down there. True Story Survival - Everest, Society of the Snow, The Impossible, Chernobyl (BBC miniseries), The Railway Men: Untold Story of Bhopal (miniseries), A Night To Remember (1958 Titanic film, free on youtube, so incredibly worth it)
Hi! If you're looking for a thrilling experience, I highly recommend 'As Above, So Below' - it's sure to give you a sense of claustrophobia! Love you all the way from Argentina!!
The guys who died in the real-life accident were saturation divers. Those kind of divers, usually welders on deep-sea structures like oil platforms, spend weeks at a time inside highly pressurized chambers far below the surface of the ocean. When they're brought to the surface, they exit the chamber directly into an equally pressurized chamber aboard a recovery ship, entering the ship's chamber through an airlock. There they live for something like two weeks while the pressure inside the chamber is decreased very, very gradually. The divers who died-- and this is so horrible-- essentially EXPLODED when someone bringing them supplies didn't check to see whether the inner airlock door was closed. It wasn't. When said person opened the outer door, the pressure inside the recovery chamber instantly equalized-- and the poor divers burst like meat-filled balloons. As a result of said accident, recovery chambers were redesigned so that the outer chamber door CANNOT be opened unless the inner door is sealed. That's actually similar to Cap's fate in the movie: he didn't implode. He exploded because the creature was dragging him toward the surface too quickly for his suit and body to adjust to the decreasing pressure. Thanks for the review! I love this movie: it really is an overlooked gem.
Another thought: I think the medium-sized monsters (human sized) might have been intended to be parasites living all over Cthulhu's body. I mean, parasites as opposed to being intelligent creatures living in their own community. I am not certain about that, of course. But, in the movie Cloverfield, the gigantic main monster had dozens or hundreds of little creatures living on it. They were tiny compared to the main monster, but certainly large enough to kill a human. They were like.. ummm... sort of like crab/spider hybrids, very quick and agile, but about the size of a... um... they were somewhere between the size of a golden retriever and a Shetland pony. Cloverfield is worth checking out, if you have not yet, IMHO.
