  • In this video I show you how I made the Spell Lab for the game Atlas Empires in a classic hand painted stylized way. Much like Clash of Clans or World of Warcraft. These techniques are really important for mobile games in general. check out my other play lists on hand painted techniques below with tutorials and guides.

    Hand painted and stylized will always remain. Because it's a way to make unique art. Hyper realism all looks the same, or strives to look the same as reality. It's also a requirement to work in large teams creating assets. I also do hope there is some developer that picks up the work on the paint mode.

      Photobashing is alot easier than handpainted/stylized. And cheaper to do.

    This inspires me to try some stylized texture painting. I usually dislike stylized game art because it can be soo exaggerated and too colorful. Thanks for showing us a more mild and cozy look. =]

    Awesome work! It looks so easy and with a natural flow when a master craftsman is creating. Would love to see a course that covers the whole creation process of an item like this that mixes sculpting, box modelling and painting.
    You have a good narrative voice as well that dots the i for the whole experience.

    Regarding realistic vs hand painted: I'll always prefer hand painted for games. When I play a game, I want to escape real world and realism for a while

    I know hand painting is kinda popular due to it be performant on mobile, but I think it'll be around for a long time. The problem with realistic look in games is after awhile the games would all look the same and have no real personal touch or style. That's why I think stylized art in general won't go away. It's a way to stand out from the crowd.

    The fact that this took you 10 hours shows there's no replacement for hard work. It's great that you can take constructive criticism so well. I think I would struggle with that. I totally made it to the end of your video. Once I finish my current game project I'm going to go back through some of your modeling tutorials. I also bought your drawing tutorial and am working through that in my spare time. Thanks!

    Hi Grant... Was hoping to get a bit of info on the grass technique for this. I love the short clumpiness and color variation. Well, I like the colors of your work in general your experience really shines there. Is the grass done with the hair mod stuck to a plane still? I'm assuming with a gradient texture to get variation? Or a clump populate on a vert select? Can't pin it down but looks awesome from here... Thanks for sharing...

    Handpainted is very cool, but it feels that it's dying out because programs like Substance Painter can produce an approximation. So far have not reached it yet I think, but it could provide a basis. I was just learned a little bit of it yesterday, like how to bake high poly details onto a low poly object, and how add a quick 3 layered stylized texture to it. It was fun and not that hard to make. Here was the end result I had: i.imgur.com/8OyUFah.png On this picture the tree trunk is very low poly, basically a tube, and all the details are baked onto with Painter. Although I don't think it's perfect this all think was like 30 min of effort maybe? and then you can import it back to wherever you want and finish from there.
    Handpainting is both hard and easy at the same time. Easy since you don't need to think about various PBR maps, or how to use a tool that's quite expensive to get and learn, but it's also hard at the same time since as you mentioned painting takes absolute ages.. Last time I did a handpainted set, made a bandit camp, with various buildings and assets like a blacksmith and tents and food items, and I sort of gave up on life after finished them all :D I think a whole weekend was spent jus to model and paint them up all. This was the endresult i.imgur.com/p7bMSRS.jpg i.imgur.com/sttkMar.jpg I mean I like where this was going, but maan if it was killing time with a nuke.. :D

    • @grabbitt
      @grabbitt  3 роки тому +2

      yeah its true although you have to spend longer on the sculpt to get a high poly model for substance so its still kind of working out the same at the moment but I like the ability to adapt it a lot in blender. Nice work by the way :)

  • @kellyjohnson768

    Grant, what would you have to do with the compositor if you only wanted the image to be rendered out in stark black and white or greyscale after you already colored and textured it?

    • @grabbitt
      @grabbitt  3 роки тому

      Don't know not done that but there's probably a colour node that you can take out the saturation. Then maybe some kind of colour ramp
