Love mine. Had a leftover 2018 model and bought it in 2019..... almost 18,000 miles later and I still love it. An underrated motorcycle. Very capable in off road, single track, Twisties etc

Good review, I get about 40mpg on my 19’ mixed dirt and street since I ride to the trail, I change the oil every 4500miles with motorex cross power 4t because oil is cheap and it doesn’t take much. I absolutely love mine and they are probably one of the most capable bikes ever made from mild single track to 135mph freeway bursts or just riding up and down stairs and walkways at 2 in the morning at the local parks it’s a joy to own one.

You F.ing badass! riding parks while others sleep! I do agree, it's the goldilocks ADV...enough tech but not too much. About to roll over 30k km. Will do another review this winter. I change oil at around the same time (8k km), like you said, easy, cheap insurance. Typically any synthetic 1ow-50. (Lucas, Liqi-Moli). I put a larger rear sprocket on and now it’s even better for the back country, yet still more than fast and fun enough in the twistiest, such as it is with nobbies. I use the friction lock on my 1090 and 701, they work great. I sold my 1090 then ended up buying it back, the only thing that I found close to it was the Desert x.
I’m 230 pounds and 6’1”, the suspension is fine for me and I jump mine often. Did the Idaho BDR and some of the Wyoming BDR on this bike. Originally I got this used 3 years ago from a guy in Montana and it had a few issues. It needed a new radiator from a small puncture and a new fuel pump. Here in Wyoming our freeways are 80mph and she just roars down the freeway, so fun.
I got a Yoshimura exhaust and whew does she sound bad ass, as well as not burning myself on the stock exhaust. My 701s stock exhaust gave me a scar on my hand from moving it when turning around on a trail.
The 890s have had some serious problems according to some shops I frequent. Also they handle extremely well but the wider bottom gives issues if you don’t pay attention.

I'll have to check that video out, I'd seen it on some forums and went uhhhh what?

I wanted a 1090S, but only Rs were available in my area, so I ended up with a 1290SAS. All the electronics scared me because I don't trust Bosch after early owners' complaints, but I have to say that in 2 years I have not had any problems. I get the feeling that KTM is a relatively small company putting out a lot of models, so development lags behind release, so I would not want to be an early adopter. Solid commentary - just a note, be VERY cautious with your triple clamp covers. I'm in QLD and it gets hot, so do the case covers. The ignition side cover has been destroyed by the triple clamp cover from heat and to a lesser extent dirt. Unless you are operating in a cooler climate and you are prepared to take them off every time you come off the dirt I would not recommend these at all.

Watched lots of reviews on these. I think yours is top notch. Especially since you talked a bit about an AT. Had Hondas and Yamaha's all my life, thought I was dead set on an AT over a 1090, but honestly just sitting on an AT compared to the 1290 at the bike show hands down the 1290 felt way more accustomed to my riding style than the AT. What's your thought between them. If you'd do it over again KTM or Honda?

The KTM feels like you sit on top of it. Honda in it.
28k Km now and still putting a huge smile on my face. I went from a Vstrom 1000 to a super tenere 1200, to the AT and on to the 1090.
1090 is plush, predictable (tc off all the time, rear abs off). It can be stupid quick when you want it.
      Does it all.
Decent to work on. Decent intervals.
Would not consider a Japanese bike unless they bring up their suspension game.
I’ll be a 890r adventure or whatever flavour is around in 2-3 yrs time.
I will likely do a 40k review at the end of this season. Stand by and enjoy the 1290.

Missed out on a 1090 just an hr from me ah well. Search continues! Enjoy the smiles for miles! Still 2ft of snow in Ontario!

Hamilton area. Ask him if the valves were done. Big service. Also did he service the fuel pump.

Ya spoke to the guy in Hamilton. Never did ask about valves or fuel pump. U think 11500 is decent for 28km?
