Honestly I'm cool with the anime's changes. Both the movie and books were all about Scott so shifting focus to Ramona and allowing her to simply talk out any problems with her exes and realize they weren't entirely evil? That's a sign of maturity on Bryan Lee O'Malley's part.
Exacly and some people dont see it and its so sad. Their hate and anger is blinding them from a good show just because its not like the comics, movie and game.
The only thing I think the show lacked was being more explicit in demonstrating that Ramona's way of running away from the people she loves is a big part of what makes them evil. Super Ramona would've had more weight behind it if Ramona faced the consequences of her actions with more regret. It's actually quite weird how she had no reaction to the fact that a person she cared about was supposedly killed because of a league she knew would kill Scott but didn't tell Scott about. Scott is far from perfect but his transformation into the 8th evil ex shows Ramona is deeply flawed. It's true that Scott locked himself in that room for 10 years but Ramona never made an effort to talk to him either. Thank you for reading this essay.
I’m going to say - I was a casual fan of Scott Pilgrim. The movie was fun, but I never explored further. I was curious about the show, and honestly? This show is amazing. It got me deeply engaged with the plot, and with the characters, and that’s despite my lack of experience with the original source material. This show made me want to go and read the original graphic novels. It made me invested, and it got me wanting more
You have probably already heard this before, but it is worth it to watch the movie and read the graphic novels; but no pressure, just do it if you feel like it. Welcome!
I was so happy!! It feels like it lovingly referenced but also built upon and fixed up the movie and its plot. The humor also felt modern but perfectly in line with SPVTW
Now that I have finished the video I feel that your last line about seeing Scott Pilgrim grow with you was the perfect description. Both humor and narrative have evolved so much, this series is such a love letter to the franchise and it’s fans
I don’t think wanting a direct adaptation is an unrealistic expectation. It’s just a different expectation. I like a lot of the themes of the show but would have loved to see Scott’s past more explored like they did in the comics. And I think they could have given Ramona her times to shine and the exes being fleshed out while still following the original plot. I miss seeing Lisa miller and envy’s past with Scott! And I wish I had an animated adaptation to point to people and go “if you want to see the comics animated, please see it here!” (Like most anime adaptations are to manga) I don’t think Scott pilgrims original story is simply “the characters live happily ever after”, they help each other change and grow. Scott realizes he’s a shitty person and Ramona confronts her exes. And knives gets development by the end of the comic, too!
it would have been cool to get a beautifully animated closer adaptation to the comics, but with some of the stuff added to takes off like Ramona’s growth and conversations with her exes. It’s a cool series and it does work in some parts, but I don’t think fans wanting to see their fav comic given a fleshed out tv show is unrealistic at all
(Just want to iterate that my long comment is not hate for this video! I really enjoy your analysis videos, I simply wanted to add to the discussion ! )
think of it this way : This is Brian's closure to Scott's and his own growth as a man. If you were Brian, and was given 2 choices : A. Adapt the comic that you made 20 years ago B. Get closure and tell the story you want to close your life's work with And you get only one chance to choose, would you still choose A ? As much as I try to sympathize with fans who'd wholeheartedly choose A, I'm firmly with Brian getting his closure and choosing B.
Also, the original story doesn't have too much space left for Ramona to undergo character growth. Nowhere close to SPTO. Again I get that having an animated adaptation of the original Scott can be a good entry for new fans, but SPTO is sincerely a love letter for you, YES YOU, old fans ! This is probably the last we'll see from Scott Pilgrim unless this anime takes off (literally) majorly. I'd rather have this Scott Final Season than an animated Scott Origin story with that in mind.
100% agreed with all of your points here! I don’t understand why people are so upset that it ended up being a different story, because that made me more excited about it, and it ended up being amazing!
This was the first piece of Scott Pilgrim media I consumed and I have already watched it twice and plan on watching it again. I'm kinda obsessed now, and am definitely going to be grabbing the books
@@Slitheringpeanut I watched the movie after watching the show twice, and it definitely wasn't as good imo (got better towards the end, but just didn't like scott at all and felt he had no chemistry with ramona) vs in the show where i actually liked him despite his flaws and they were cute together. I know I'm gonna be slightly let down by the comics especially because my favourite character was Matthew and he dies immediately lmao as well as the other exes just being there to be killed off too. I much prefer seeing them all get an ending in the show.
@@heeeeresjohnny799 The Exes don't die. They just teleport to their rooms/homes feeling really bad about their actions. According to O'Malley before he brainwormed. Second, I have to ask. How? How could you like Scott? He showed up like in one episode and then it became the Ramona Flowers show.
I loved the fact that it was a different viewpoint, otherwise I'd have just watched the 1st episode to see what it was like; i doubt I'd sit through it if it had just been the same treatment as the movie.
@@paz1514 You have a point there. Didn't false advertising used to be a crime? Everyone does it now, every movie, every network; it's how the media turns, it seems.
never watched/read any scott pilgrim before i watched this, only a couple clips and second hand knowledge from my buddy. as pretty much an outsider, i loved it! the animation's great, the soundtrack's great, the characters are great and even though it was out of left field, the twist worked for me
I started with the show, and i loved it. It was abit weird seeing the movie after but now that i understand everythinf its so amazing (Im planning to read the books, play the game and listen to the albums later)
4:50 so you mean to say they didn't have the budget to make both happen... what the fans want and what the director wants... 11:02 another thing is that what happens with ramona and scott after they get together can if left to interpretation can lead to different scenarios for each individual person, in a sense if scott managed to grow as a person after everything that happened in the comics (well considering that the game should follow the comics story) you could imagine that his growth continued after this and wasn't stunted by the assimilation of his shadow self, as I presume happens in the 'takes off' version, so sorry as I see it it's just a choice between satisfying your fans, and self satisfaction, and well I you can see what was chosen and it doesn't even properly explains the flaws of the original story, because that wasn't the goal, the goal was to create a different that 'fixes' those flaws and by doing so just barely addresses them. And the fans are mad because despite the flaws they still liked the original story, and aren't stupid enough to see trough them, on the other hand at the time of the righting of the comics it was pretty common for a highschooler to be dating some one 3-4 years above her age...
I'd actually feel like this is a matter of this being a modern adaptation and not an adaptation that was made years ago back when long cartoon/anime seasons were a thing. I think people expected a long-term adaptation of the comic like it was an traditional cartoon show with development that would run for a while.
Metatext, canonicity, who cares? I got to see Will Forte in another banger role and that's enough to give it a 10/10! In all seriousness though, I'm glad that we got something that stands alongside the original story, while being it's own thing and giving us more from the great characters we already knew but didn't quite get a chance to get to know completely A bit of an underrated aspect I enjoy about the story is that Older Scott isn't the only one at fault for the relationship crumbling. Ramona wanted space, which is fair, but she didn't clearly communicate it to Scott (who already knows how she deals with Exes, completely running away from them), with neither of them talking to the other for decades I genuinely hope we get to see more of them in a potential second season, I want to see where they both ended up after all this Though I'd just be happy seeing something from this series in general after how much I enjoyed these small 8 episodes of course
Been a lifelong fan of the books and movie, and this show was pretty much everything I didn't know I needed. I was fully expecting a more straight forward book adaptation but I'm seriously glad that's not what we got.
(Warning: I’m making this comment before watching the video so I just wanted to clarify that) I really loved this anime a lot and I’m honestly glad they changed the story instead of retelling the same regurgitated plot over and over again. I feel as though that this anime takes place in the same universe as the OG story but is just a different timeline. I like how the anime doesn’t ignore the original plot and mentions of a few Easter eggs to it, but I feel as though that this anime is in “what if” situation.. basically asking what if Scott didn’t win the fight against one of his exes (other than Gideon ofc). Anyways it’s definitely clear if Scott didn’t lose any of the other fights, the events of the books and movies would play out. I also really like how Older Scott is the ORIGINAL Scott from the books/movie who is trying to stop himself from getting any closer w Ramona. I felt that concept was creative, however I just wish we saw more of this story, more of Scott, and even see some of the other characters from the book who have unfortunately been reduced to background characters that appear in the final episode such as Lisa and Joseph😔
Indrecibly well done video! honestly glad i found someone with a more grounded and less sensacionalist view on the show, i've been of the opinion that the backlash on the show was more a consequence of marketing and not of the production itself. O'Malley and the people at Science Saru probably did not intend on setting people's expectations up like that and it's likely that decision came from Netflix. It's really unfortunate that such a great show suffered for that but i'm glad it's still creating engaging discourse and i hope that the franchise can finnaly get the recognition it deserves. On that note i'm still holding out hopes for an eventual faithtfull adaptations of the comics and if anything i'd be glad if it came from the amazing talented crew of the movie and the people at Science Saru
I watched it with a base knowledge of Scott Pilgrim- Never engaged with the franchise before- and thoroughly enjoyed it! The pacing was nice, the characters were fleshed out, it was quite well done.
I’ve heard a lot of people say that you shouldn’t start with Scott pilgrim by watching this show but when I went into it all I knew was some canadian had to fight a girls 7 exs and I still loved this show and it’s made me really interested in Scott pilgrim
i really have to disagree with you about who would enjoy this most. i saw the movie back in middle school and thought it was fun but forgetable, and didn’t even know about the comics until this year. and despite having not read the comics still, and only knowing the basics, i LOVED this adaption. i enjoyed how much time we got to spend with each ex and the antics we got to see them go through, i enjoyed the fact that a beat’em-up gauntlet thing was turned into a character-driven detective story, and i loved how the story was capped off by poignant themes of choosing to become better than others who are stuck in there ways (including your future self). this show is one of my all-timers tbh
I mean we all knew what happens when Matthew Pattels showes up, but the first time we watched the movies or read the comics it broke our expectations from that super slow start, so I guess they tried to reimplement that again in the Anime by surprising us and opening a new storyline.
My point exactly, we got season 2 before given a season 1. And the misdirection of the marketing make it more frustrating to watch. And I say this for the point of someone who liked what they did with the characters. But the frustration was real and really worsened one experience that would be nice otherwise.
I dunno. I had only seen the movie 10 ish years ago and never read the manga, and I ADORED the series. Because I wasn't wedded to the source material, I was able to meet the show where it's at and enjoy the series being told. I think it's possible to thoroughly enjoy this show if you're unfamiliar or passingly familiar with the source material.
I love the comics. I just wanted to see them come to life--to experience them differently. A new story is fine, but I'll still be waiting (hopelessly, I suppose) to see that old, familiar adventure in glorious animation.
Thank you for mentioning the interviews I was so confused when people were upset takes off isn't a 1 to 1 adaption. I was like what? They said it wasn't going to be😭
I liked that the show shattered my expectations of it being an animated remake of the comics, and basically became a sequel. That's how I view it, anyway. All that there is to know about the characters and plot is acknowledged and implied, and takes them all in newer and bigger directions for them. I appreciate keeping the exes alive and unharmed to see them explored and expanded, at the expense of Scott's original journey of development. His journey is now exchanged for meeting his future self and learning about how he'll continue being the leech he is after being a weak willed, terrible husband, like the shallow boyfriend he is in the present. Scott never really met the consequences of his actions, and so he finally gets to see the kind of guy he really is put the damage he causes on others on himself..
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was my introduction to the franchise (aside from the massive pop culture osmosis) and it is easily one of my favorite shows in a long time. You’re probably the sixth or seventh long time scott pilgrim fan to say that this was a bad introduction to the franchise, and I have to disagree tbh, at least from my perspective.
I love this story better than the original. I’ve loved the movie when I was 14 when my buddy showed me it, and I love the video game, but this adaptation subverted my expectations in the best way possible.
Benefits? A cool new take on the universe that focuses on developing characters who didn’t get much time to shine before they were turned into pocket change Both of the movie, the game, and most importantly the original comics exist as a way to introduce yourself to the universe, and with how the creator has said multiple times that it was a different story or nothing, I choose that different story over nothing. Detriments? Well, it’s hard to get people on board with something like this. People fault the comics as being hard to get somebody into as you have to go out and buy them, I don’t have a lot of problems reading but some people do. What about the movie? Well, while the movie is a cult classic and is loved by fans, *real* actors surely is a departure from the series’ potential visually when it could be animated, the game succeeds in this but not everyone’s into video games or beat ‘em ups in particular The show if it was an adaptation would be a perfect way to get a new generation into the series proper, though it’s understandable why they wanted to go a different route after 3 attempts at faithful adaptations and basically telling people “if you want the real story, look to the 3 projects we’ve already made” is pretty bold and goes against the grain in a world of many remakes
idk my best friend watch the series with me and he’s never seen the movie or read the books the only knowledge he has of scott pilgrim was the few times he played the game with me and he came out really liking this show
Loved it. Felt like it really is a continuation from the comics and it's about giving 5he characters all a chance to grow in a way they didn't or couldn't before.
Great video. Im a huge fan of Scott Pilgrim. Love the books, movie an game. Happy we got something new and not the same thing we got 3 times already lol
I thought the anime was WAY BETTER than the movie. The treatment didn't put a single foot wrong--not one! An absolutely perfect series, I don't know what the problem is. Writing out the mc was at first strange, but it didn't matter.
I have read the comics and I was still excited for a straight anime adaptation of them. The movie condensed the story so much that even though I saw it first, the comics felt almost like a whole new story. And it's been long enough since I and many others have read them, that revisiting them rendered in beautiful stylish animation would've been a dream come true. I love the anime for what it is. But I am slightly disappointed we didn't get that straight adaptation. The trailer lead people to believe that was what we were in for, so I don't think that was an unreasonable expectation at all.
Yeah. The number of people basing their expectations on the teailer vs those who read any of the interviews that supposidly hinted at it is way larger. Marketing dropped the ball hard on this one and lead to the whole bait and switch narrative.
In terms of writing this indirect adaptation which seeks to “improve” on the source material fails at reaching those goals. SPOILERS: After the Roxie episode I was hopeful we’d see some sincere inner conflict with Ramona as she finds some resolution with her exes and maybe even apologize to some of the for either abandonment or cheating. But we never get the same level of sincerity with the rest of the exes when compared to Roxie. All the other episodes following it are either filler or comedy bits. We see the side characters having fun in a slice of life fashion. Great for a 12 episode anime but an 8 episode adaptation of a graphic novel grappling with themes of infidelity, self improvement and actualization makes these superfluous comedy bits feel like a waste of time. And when it comes to “improving” on the source material it also fails on that goal as well. Ramona is now the main character but what do the writers do with that opportunity? Going around asking “smart questions” by simply asking her exes straight up if they kidnapped Scott. Real Columbo detective work there. Also why is she going through all this trouble to find some guy she dated once and learned has two timed her with a high schooler? Is this really an improvement from her role as a manic pixie dream girl? She’s now the MC but is this a major improvement from her role as a literary tool? And since Scott was missing for most of the show he’s not given enough time to learn and grow throughout the series. This show is not meant for those who think too hard. Turn your brain off and enjoy the fun music, references, and cool animation with funny characters. Anything more and you’ll probably be disappointed.
I’m kind of a weird in between with Scott pilgrim. I read the whole comic…. MANY Years ago so I don’t remember everything. I remember liking it and thinking it a good comic, But I wouldn’t describe myself as a super fan. That and I don’t mind Scott pilgrims takes off being a diverging story exploring new things. I love undertale and deltarune along with its many AUs for example, so elsworlds is no problem to me. I’m a bit worried that my foggy memory of the Scott pilgrim comic and never watching the live action Scott pilgrim movie would have me enjoy this story less. I do love science Saru as a big fan of keep your hands of eizoukun and I bet a lot of money that the animation of that alone already interest me to watch this. So even after the fan reception. I’m going in with the same open mind and interest before and after it released.
This anime was actually my introduction to Scott Pilgrim and I loved it! I am very much looking forward to potentially reading the graphic novels ^-^ (And potentially watching season 2 if that gets greenlit)
Stright adaptation 1:1 like most animes do > anime original trash Is this unrealistic expectations? Not at all, most animes do it, shit is the norm and the standart, i guess im wrong for wanting the bare minimum
considering that this show, and the source material is heavily influenced by gaming culture, remember that time when Hideo Kojima AND Konami did the Bait and Switch that is Metal Gear Solid 2? Remember how that 2nd entry "tactical espionage" game from a well-known franchise was hated first because it was Baiting the playerbase with the promise of you getting to play the game's known fan-favorite protagonist and then Switching it to a not-known new protagonist but later became a cult classic simply because people gave it a chance? That's the issue. No one is denying it as a , it's just the matter of people giving it a chance to present itself and most people with common sense will do that :^)
@@gattonero2915 I see what you're saying, but agree to disagree and i never really liked Raiden anyway...Scott Pilgrim Takes Off literally has Scott's name in the title, but barely incorporated him in the season except for 3 episodes. Even the trailers were misleading implying that this was going to be an anime adaption of the original story... If you liked the series so far...great! I'm happy for you, but this has nothing to do with common sense (I see your verbal jab lol). The comic, movie, and game did what it needed to do during it's time. Having a Netflix series is just feels like a big reach for relevancy and cash grab.
As someone who had only played through the video game, listened to the first two comic volumes dubbed, and watched an analysis of the film, I can say I used to be a sorta divorced fan of the Scott Pilgrim series. I didn't have the big picture of the plot, but I did appreciate how much charm the series oozed regardless. So I, like many other people, began watching the anime thinking it would get me up to speed with the plot as established in the comics. Man, that was SO not the case... and I *loved* it for that!! Seeing the characters get characterized in a nuanced and new manner was so satisfying, and it made me want to continue pursuing the series. And now, I can say that I have! I'm on the fifth volume of the comics and I'm planning on watching the film after, then I'll rewatch the anime. I'm just so stoked about the fact that they straight up removed Scott because of its impact and the world building it enables, and I think it made for a very good watch for someone like me.
the only scott pilgrim content i waqtched before this show where just a video from comic drake. i still thought this was good tho. but i think a lot of charakter aside from ramona dont get enough development. even knives. it just feels like the development was rushed. and we didnt see scott being an asshole enough so the overcoming of his ishues at the end doesnt make any sense to the viewer. we should have seen scott be more of a dick. but i think there should have been a little more scott. this story has huge balls. i think scott pilgrim vs the world should have always been an animated movie/show
Knowing scott dated a child and 19 year old is into me and I quickly denied cause I am not a groomer nor have low self esteem to date someone younger than me.i have daddy issues not little brother issues it doesn’t help he bought me gift I didn’t trust cause how a 19 year old can afford the things he gave me is baffles me shit even older men tell me if I buy you this slice of pizza you gonna suck it lol I be like what yeah still don’t get how scott can date a child if I can say no so can you leave these children alone to figure themselves out
I genuinely don't feel like the animated series unpacked any of these issues in a deep or interesting way. Ramona as a main character was only able to exist in the context of solving past problems not as an active source of new problems, while with the exception of Roxie, none of the background characters actually get a deeper exploration than in the movie or certainly the graphic novel. In the case of Knives, and the band members, the treatment is infinitely shallower here. Also, making future Scott the ultimate villain of the series ultimately feels unrelated to the narrative agency of the characters in the actual series, and more a commentary on its relationship with the movie, which degrades the feeling that what happened in this series actually mattered at all. It feels like, even in a story that is supposed to forefront Ramona's problems, they still end up putting Scotts problems first, and she still ends up feeling like a background character in her own show. It was very disappointing.
You know, i wouldn't even mind the criticism against this adaptation, If they did what you did, you talk about the adaptation for what it actually is instead of what it is not. But even if they did, this is still a few tiers above their quality of commentary, this is great
I actually went in completely blind to this show, and I think a lot of the fans have been overestimating how much context is necessary to get a whole lot out if it. I went back and read the comics afterwards and read the comics, and i will say having context *does* give more, but i dont think you need to have that context
Honestly the response I'm seeing is that it succeeds as a movie reimagining but fails as a Comic reimagining. I like it but it doesn't live up to the comic's storytelling or depth
Fans of this show have such a hard time understanding why other fans don’t like this show. It’s not that hard it’s a tasteless bait n switch that would’ve been appreciated if marketed properly but this was a disappointment.
It was still a missed opportunity to faithfully adapt the source material. I guess faithful adaptions are a 2000’s thing. Which means hopefully more media moves on and tries some original screen plays rather than unfaithfully adapt classic literature
I only went into Scott Pilgrim Takes Off knowing like the basic plot points of Scott vs the League of Evil Exes. I feel like if you’re new to it, you can still thoroughly enjoy the show. I think I resonated with it because the comedy felt familiar and the show made clear who these characters are as people.
I was told it was gonna be a comic adaptation, then it wasn't and they completely changed the story. Im not watching it not hating on the people who like it im just not giving it the time of day
Personally, I think I will watch this new sequel spinoff or whatever. Too bad that we lost the opportunity to get a direct animated adaptation, but the creators of this show are some of the few creators that I respect enough to actually listen to. They are not the average corporate monigots that we find (or found) too often on most Ped*wood studios (such as Feige, Kennedy, Pascal or Sarnoff, to name a few). Although I still think that they should have made it clear from the get go that this was a different, new story rather than an adaptation of the same material we knew and loved.
I think i prefer the anime's ending more because all throughout the comics and movie it was supposed to have a (at the very least) semi-realistic depiction of how relationships grow and change and how toxic it can be, but they both still ended with a happily ever after. Meanwhile in the anime they acknowledge it's not realistic to think after you think you have it figured out it's all peaches and rainbows. It feels more true to the narrative of scott Pilgrim than the endings to both the comics and movies
I don't have an issue with a new story being told but I gotta be honest. the thing that really annoys me about the side that defends this show is the argument "Why would you wanna see the same story you already know again?" *SPECIALLY* when I notice that certain people making this argument like Anime, and here's why: Unlike western adaptations of comics, Anime often faithfully adapt stories based on manga, and people like it for two reasons: 1) Fans are happy that a story they love is now being elevated through the power of animation, sound, and direction. 2) this allows the story to now reach people who wouldn't otherwise engage with it, since Television is a more digestible media. I heard that a lot of people liked this show, but I can't help but feel disappointed thinking that now, a "true" adaptation of the original story will never exist. Ultimately, I feel like they should've made a first season adapting the original story, and THEN made this. specially since this show pretty much requires that you be familiar with the original.
Star Wars (Somehow Palpatine returns, render the sacrifice Luke and Vader did pointless, just so Rey can kill him...again) Terminator (Terminator kills John. Something the entire series is supposed to avoid) He-Man (Kills him in the first ep, just so Teela can transform into a dark-skinned strong girl) Indiana Jones (Jones is an old man, here is a strong girl to take over) Thor L&T (Thor is no longer the Thor, but his girlfriend is) Marvel What If (What if Steve didn't get the upgrade, but his girlfriend did) Peter Pan (Step aside Peter, this is all about Wendy) Doctor Who (Goes back in time to rewrite the Doctor's origin.... to be a girl) Last of us 2 (Trailer shows old Joel. But a big angry girl with a golf club said no) It (sadly) was what I expected. And NO, i don't like it when a company responsible for the adaptation plays Russian Rullette with the fandom.
idk this show kinda sucks. I've only watched the movie but this just seems like a show with the style and the humor but none of the underlying drama and storytelling. The hook for this show like most current subversive type stories is based on just twisting the original in order to surprise the audience rather then having the hook come from the actual characters or plot. The majority of the show is mostly pointless because it's just Ramona looking for scott which doesn't matter anyway because he just shows back up anyway.
I’d agree with you if it wasn’t for the fact that the graphic novels were all around just better written. Scott didn’t need this adaptation to mature. He already did that in the books. Same with Ramona. She didn’t talk with her exes, but she did recognize her problems. And both her and Scott decide to start over and try to be better at the end. And it did all that by still allowing the other characters to have their own stuff going on, like Kim. And this is just a personal thing, but I find it annoying how people really focus on Scott dating a 17 year old thing. Like, sure, raise an eyebrow or whatever, but some people act like it’s the most problematic and offensive deed ever. My dad is 15 years older than my Mom. And I know there are relationships with larger age gaps than that. And Knives is 17. When she turns 18, absolutely nothing about her will change. Her body will look the same, and she’ll be the same person mentally. Twitter has really ruined how we view these type of things in media and otherwise.
Lmao wanting the show to be what it was advertised when announced is not un realistic. Refused to watch the rest of this garbage. Stop justifying false advertising
They did a bait and switch. Just like He Man, just like the Mandalorian last season. Nobody wants their expectations subverted and these Hollywood writers aren't good enough to do it, anyway. That's why they marketed it like they did. They knew the show couldn't stand on its own so they made it look like one thing when they knew it wasn't.
The show felt like another butchering of a socialist thinking the best way to make an adaptation of a beloved series is to kill the main guy and make the story about the girl because it worked wonders on Star Wars, He-Man, Castlevania or Secret Invasion
Movies have been doing this for decades. It's really the only way to pull off any kind of twist early in the story. Psycho had bait and switch marketing. The original marketing framed Marion as the main character. It's only on rerelease that the posters and trailers started being honest about who and what the story was about because by that point everyone already knew.
2:33 I’m gonna have to say I disagree pretty heavily. The show is already garnering a huge fanbase from the premise alone. Whether a show is popular or not is a lot more complicated than the story being shuffled around and maybe being too confusing to new watchers. The look and premise of the show has already hooked my whole friend group onto it, and I was the only one who owned the books at the time. I went into it expecting some big change, so Scott dying was funnily enough the best part of the show for me. Roxie, Matthew and Lucas especially were exes I really liked while they were still undefeated. There’s so much they could’ve done in the comic that they didn’t end for me reading it as a 10-year-old girl, Scott was by far my least favourite part of the comic. So seeing a version of the story where he’s barely in it is a little cathartic to me, I know a lot of teen boys read the book when they were younger and projected onto Scott, but there’s so many things that could have been better developed if he were dead. In the way, the remedy that by using plot points in the original comic and combining them, such as Todd’s affair on Envy with Wallace being a combination of him cheating on her with the drummer in their band in volume 3, and Wallace, being a quote un quote boyfriend stealer. It ends up hilariously making Todd a better person, where he actually cares about the person he’s in a relationship with. Other plot points, Roxie’s relationship being marked as a fling by Ramona and Lucas, getting cheated on by Ramona with Todd hurting his self-esteem so badly, he decides to go into a career based entirely on how others see him all get addressed pretty straight forwardly, such that they’ve become fan favourites. I’m happy with the show, ofc there’ll be the inevitably anti woke screaming but unless you’re purposefully looking to politicise the show, or watched a UA-camr make your opinion for you, it’s a great watch. With the level of buzz I’ve seen, I’m sure a season two will at least be thought about.
Honestly I'm cool with the anime's changes. Both the movie and books were all about Scott so shifting focus to Ramona and allowing her to simply talk out any problems with her exes and realize they weren't entirely evil? That's a sign of maturity on Bryan Lee O'Malley's part.
Funny enough the comics did this
It's not anime.

It made me invested, and it got me wanting more
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is much more similar to the books in tone despite having a different story. You should definitely read it!
I've never consumed any other Scott Pilgrim media, but I loved this show so, 🤷♀️. I got a decent amount out of it.
I'm genuinely glad to hear that!
I feel like it would have been better to watch the movie first or the actual comic instead of some weird spin off but that's just me
@@Revealingstorm. I guess, but I wasn't aware it'd be a weird spin off show. I just heard people liked it lol
You have probably already heard this before, but it is worth it to watch the movie and read the graphic novels; but no pressure, just do it if you feel like it. Welcome!
@@raphaelzakhm7310 Yeah I'm probably gonna read the graphic novels once u have more cash.
Was hoping the show would be just a retelling of the comic, but it ended up being much more. It's fucking amazing IMO
And I wish I had an animated adaptation to point to people and go “if you want to see the comics animated, please see it here!” (Like most anime adaptations are to manga)
I don’t think Scott pilgrims original story is simply “the characters live happily ever after”, they help each other change and grow.
I really enjoy your analysis videos, I simply wanted to add to the discussion ! )
think of it this way :
This is Brian's closure to Scott's and his own growth as a man.
If you were Brian, and was given 2 choices :
A. Adapt the comic that you made 20 years ago
B. Get closure and tell the story you want to close your life's work with
And you get only one chance to choose, would you still choose A ?
@@st.lucient4755 and? I dont care about him, im not here for him, im here for the comic adaptation
You'll likely be disappointed, it's not the same. There's too much Scott Pilgrim in them.
This is a NEW TAKE, with new material; fans should be ecstatic.
And they would have been had it been properly marketed.
I loved the fact that it was a different viewpoint, otherwise I'd have just watched the 1st episode to see what it was like;
i doubt I'd sit through it if it had just been the same treatment as the movie.
Maybe if they hadn't lied to promote a show I would've maybe liked it.
@@paz1514 You have a point there. Didn't false advertising used to be a crime? Everyone does it now, every movie, every network; it's how the media turns, it seems.
never watched/read any scott pilgrim before i watched this, only a couple clips and second hand knowledge from my buddy. as pretty much an outsider, i loved it! the animation's great, the soundtrack's great, the characters are great and even though it was out of left field, the twist worked for me
Loved this show, thanks for making a video on it!
My only issue is that I wish it was longer.
I started with the show, and i loved it. It was abit weird seeing the movie after but now that i understand everythinf its so amazing
(Im planning to read the books, play the game and listen to the albums later)
I had conflicting thoughts too, so much that I couldn't sleep because of them
But after a few days I came around and got past said thoughts
I'd actually feel like this is a matter of this being a modern adaptation and not an adaptation that was made years ago back when long cartoon/anime seasons were a thing. I think people expected a long-term adaptation of the comic like it was an traditional cartoon show with development that would run for a while.
As a fan of the comic first, then a fan of the movie, I loved the show and the changes.
Metatext, canonicity, who cares?
I got to see Will Forte in another banger role and that's enough to give it a 10/10!
In all seriousness though, I'm glad that we got something that stands alongside the original story, while being it's own thing and giving us more from the great characters we already knew but didn't quite get a chance to get to know completely
A bit of an underrated aspect I enjoy about the story is that Older Scott isn't the only one at fault for the relationship crumbling. Ramona wanted space, which is fair, but she didn't clearly communicate it to Scott (who already knows how she deals with Exes, completely running away from them), with neither of them talking to the other for decades
I genuinely hope we get to see more of them in a potential second season, I want to see where they both ended up after all this
Though I'd just be happy seeing something from this series in general after how much I enjoyed these small 8 episodes of course
Been a lifelong fan of the books and movie, and this show was pretty much everything I didn't know I needed. I was fully expecting a more straight forward book adaptation but I'm seriously glad that's not what we got.
(Warning: I’m making this comment before watching the video so I just wanted to clarify that)
I really loved this anime a lot and I’m honestly glad they changed the story instead of retelling the same regurgitated plot over and over again.
Future Scott is the Scott from the comics or movie o mally confirmed that he also confirmed that each Scott Pilgrim Media is in separate universes
I mean i wuld beg to differ. Im a berson whom have only heard of the show like 3-4 times before but i was EXITED and LOVED it.
Yep. Even the original creator has stated that the anime would be different from the books and the movie
I knew next to nothing about Scott Pilgrim but I loved the show! Im really excited to read the books and see what the og story is
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was my introduction to the franchise (aside from the massive pop culture osmosis) and it is easily one of my favorite shows in a long time.
Benefits? A cool new take on the universe that focuses on developing characters who didn’t get much time to shine before they were turned into pocket change
Both of the movie, the game, and most importantly the original comics exist as a way to introduce yourself to the universe, and with how the creator has said multiple times that it was a different story or nothing, I choose that different story over nothing.
Detriments? Well, it’s hard to get people on board with something like this.
People fault the comics as being hard to get somebody into as you have to go out and buy them, I don’t have a lot of problems reading but some people do.
What about the movie? Well, while the movie is a cult classic and is loved by fans, *real* actors surely is a departure from the series’ potential visually when it could be animated, the game succeeds in this but not everyone’s into video games or beat ‘em ups in particular
The show if it was an adaptation would be a perfect way to get a new generation into the series proper, though it’s understandable why they wanted to go a different route after 3 attempts at faithful adaptations and basically telling people “if you want the real story, look to the 3 projects we’ve already made” is pretty bold and goes against the grain in a world of many remakes
idk my best friend watch the series with me and he’s never seen the movie or read the books the only knowledge he has of scott pilgrim was the few times he played the game with me and he came out really liking this show
I loved the series and I had never read or watched the show’s comic and movie before
I thought the anime was WAY BETTER than the movie.
SPOILERS:
After the Roxie episode I was hopeful we’d see some sincere inner conflict with Ramona as she finds some resolution with her exes and maybe even apologize to some of the for either abandonment or cheating.
Personally, I wanted it to expand more on the world, book, and characters in the book
I'm new to the franchise and loved the show--
I’m kind of a weird in between with Scott pilgrim.
I really enjoyed the anime, thanks for the video.
Young neil appreciation comment, also great vid 👏🏻
I went into the show blind, nof knowing anything about both of the source materials, and I LOVE IT.
scott pilgrim and weird just go together like peanut butter and jelly
Stright adaptation 1:1 like most animes do > anime original trash
Is this unrealistic expectations? Not at all, most animes do it, shit is the norm and the standart, i guess im wrong for wanting the bare minimum
to me this was kinda like the rebuild of eva s movies but way better haha
This anime adaption is a bait and switch...plain and simple
considering that this show, and the source material is heavily influenced by gaming culture, remember that time when Hideo Kojima AND Konami did the Bait and Switch that is Metal Gear Solid 2?
7:29 is that a Pikmin3 ost ?
oh cool I was early
Honestly the response I'm seeing is that it succeeds as a movie reimagining but fails as a Comic reimagining. I like it but it doesn't live up to the comic's storytelling or depth
Fans of this show have such a hard time understanding why other fans don’t like this show. It’s not that hard it’s a tasteless bait n switch that would’ve been appreciated if marketed properly but this was a disappointment.
It was still a missed opportunity to faithfully adapt the source material. I guess faithful adaptions are a 2000’s thing. Which means hopefully more media moves on and tries some original screen plays rather than unfaithfully adapt classic literature
might as well credit johny 2 cellos
Why did they make young Neil a Moran?
I only went into Scott Pilgrim Takes Off knowing like the basic plot points of Scott vs the League of Evil Exes. I feel like if you’re new to it, you can still thoroughly enjoy the show. I think I resonated with it because the comedy felt familiar and the show made clear who these characters are as people.
I was told it was gonna be a comic adaptation, then it wasn't and they completely changed the story. Im not watching it not hating on the people who like it im just not giving it the time of day
I'm with ya.. We can't reward this behaviour
Although I still think that they should have made it clear from the get go that this was a different, new story rather than an adaptation of the same material we knew and loved.
fnaf video when
I think i prefer the anime's ending more because all throughout the comics and movie it was supposed to have a (at the very least) semi-realistic depiction of how relationships grow and change and how toxic it can be, but they both still ended with a happily ever after. Meanwhile in the anime they acknowledge it's not realistic to think after you think you have it figured out it's all peaches and rainbows. It feels more true to the narrative of scott Pilgrim than the endings to both the comics and movies
I don't have an issue with a new story being told but I gotta be honest. the thing that really annoys me about the side that defends this show is the argument "Why would you wanna see the same story you already know again?" *SPECIALLY* when I notice that certain people making this argument like Anime, and here's why:
Unlike western adaptations of comics, Anime often faithfully adapt stories based on manga, and people like it for two reasons: 1) Fans are happy that a story they love is now being elevated through the power of animation, sound, and direction.
Wonderful series, I Ioved Scott pilgrim minus
Cap I only watched the movie and I loved the show
jolly good show
Star Wars (Somehow Palpatine returns, render the sacrifice Luke and Vader did pointless, just so Rey can kill him...again)
Terminator (Terminator kills John. Something the entire series is supposed to avoid)
He-Man (Kills him in the first ep, just so Teela can transform into a dark-skinned strong girl)
Indiana Jones (Jones is an old man, here is a strong girl to take over)
Thor L&T (Thor is no longer the Thor, but his girlfriend is)
Marvel What If (What if Steve didn't get the upgrade, but his girlfriend did)
Peter Pan (Step aside Peter, this is all about Wendy)
Doctor Who (Goes back in time to rewrite the Doctor's origin.... to be a girl)
Last of us 2 (Trailer shows old Joel. But a big angry girl with a golf club said no)
It (sadly) was what I expected.
I would forgive the changes to the story if it wasn't so BORING
Yes, wanting a show about Scott Pilgrim to be about Scott Pilgrim is so unreasonable.
Why do people keeping calling this anime? It's not anime. An American studio made this show.
It was animated by a Japanese studio.
@@wendyheatherwood you definitely didn’t do your research on which studio 😂
Words alone fail to describe how much I hate this garbage show, Netflix put soooooooo much effort into a non-adaptation of SP, WHY?!?!?!?
bro just accept that some people didnt like it without shitting on them. be half as mature as the people in the show.
I am not supporting bait n switches.. Imagine if movies did that! Oh! They already do.. Marvel
