@@REDVECTOR31 lol they had the best drugs in those days...now the Jamaicans and USA teams do.

Love watching these old clips of relay finals. What a race it turned out to be - very exciting! Thanks for posting!
Rather an eerie atmosphere I thought..
The result of the Russian winners at the 1980 Olympics was 3:01.08. The result of the US team at the alternative Olympics competition in Philly, which happened in the same month, was 3:03.20.
Fantastic race.
Would love to see the women's relay. Where can I watch it?
It is a pity, that some Western Countrys boycotted the Moscow Olympic Games because of some questionable reasons. Despite of that this relay was very exciting. It was a very close race between the USSR and the GDR. So cheers to all the athletes that has been involved.
The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was the main reason the US, UK + Allies boycotted 1980 Moscow Olympics. Ironic since Afghanistan would be the Soviet's "Vietnam", and the main catalyst along with Gorbachev's crazy reforms that led to the USSR's collapse in 1991. Anyway, the Soviets + Allies would then counter boycott the next 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
@@mr.sinjin-smyth The UK didn't boycott the Moscow Olympics.

What went wrong with Italy 1980 Moscow bronze medal winning team to finished 5th at Los Angeles 1984?
Better teams in LA. Italy ran 3:04.3 in Moscow to win bronze. Four years later they ran in 3:01.44 yet finished fifth.
Brilliant what you can do with the right drugs all researched and produced with unlimited state financing. The good old days haha.
Its just your assumption.
@@voulondesirae5989 No it isn't. It is the firm belief of just about everybody who has a decent knowledge of athletics that the 70s, 80s and 90s were drug-fuelled times. Women benefitted more than men (testosterone substitutes) which is why almost all of the women's world records today in the sprints (and the 800m), the long and high jumps and the heptathlon were all set back in the 80s and have still not been beaten. Check them out. Back then, the USSR and all the eastern block countries had state-sponsored drug programmes...other countries did not but still used drugs unofficially under the auspices of individual coaches. Some were caught (eg. Ben Johnson) but others were not (Jackie Joyner, Florence Griffiths-Joyner)
I take your point, but the western athletes doped just as much as their eastern bloc counterparts. Still very prevalent to this day.
@@francishunt562 not true. The huge difference was that PED research and administration was state-funded in the Eastern bloc countries and every athlete was involved. That was not the case in the West where it was a private entreprise albeit fairly widespread.
3:01.08. Well that would get you about 5th place at the NCAAs.
Did you know that 1980 was over 40 years ago?....so, in fact, the video shows how good they were back then....thanks mainly to drugs though haha.
@@david2804me and today’s PED drug abuse IS WORSE THAN EVER....except now the western governments are aiding and abetting the Jamaican track and USA track sprinters even more than the Soviets did. Brainwashed whites don’t want to admit it though
@@david2804me in those days 3:01.08 would usually win the NCAAs.
I wouldn't have picked glen for the squad. Good runner but you knew he wasn't going to get the baton round, and sure enough...
what ignorant commentators! The anchor runner for the winning team is none other than the 400M gold medallist Victor Markin and not Biryukof.
The late , great Ron Clarke co-commentating, So , If they were running 10,000 meters, no problem!
I agree...ridiculous not knowing who the athletes are...it's like Alan Partridge commentating!
Let’s put this ignorance, as you say, in perspective. This was a commentary broadcast back to Australia. Details of every person in the field (late, great or otherwise) made little difference to anyone. And, really, 40 years later it still doesn’t. That fact that aficionados seem aghast that something about someone wasn’t mentioned has so little relevance. This commentary stands the test of time. Everyone knows the countries, everyone knows who is who. The excitement was captured quite magnificently. It was called like a race - which after all it was - and not a reading of an encyclopaedia.
Was the team sheet wrong? They can only go on what is in front of them. Either way, it was great to watch and nit-picky historians even a century later will just have to please themselves.
@@Speedrcr5 - how would you feel if, say, British or American announcers misidentified the the swimmers on an Aussie gold medal winning relay team?
@@normanlinden5786 Couldn’t care less 40 years later. But listen to what they say when the teams on on the screen. Ron saying he’s surprised he’s not on their sheet. Keyboard critics four decades later can take all the offence they like.

Why is he saying 'Russia' when then was the Soviet Union, distinguished by CCCP on their uniforms
Who will remember the red fascists???
Grod obsrvt
Because that's just about everyone said at the time and to be fair Russia is seen as the successor state to the USSR.
@@horseracingstuff - that doesn't matter. Those Olympics were held in Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union. The announcers could have gotten the name of he host country right. That's part of their job.
Aussies, Americans, Brits etc often said 'Russia' or 'Russia' in those days rather than Soviet Union or USSR. Valiulis was Lithuanian and Linge Estonian.
Announcer never identified even one of the runners by name.. that is weird.
Couldn’t be bothered to learn the names.

no USA team.. surprise they didn't qualify for the final?
Sort of ;-)
Thats because of their wanker President boycotting the games.
No, the U.S. boycotted these Olympics due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan a year earlier.

The best olympics.
It wasn't Russia Mr Australian commentator, but the Soviet Union at that time!
For a start, Valiulis would be Lithuanian.
Chortle!
The Soviet leadoff runner, Remigius Valiulis, stepped on the inside lane about a dozen times coming around the second curve. The USSR should have been disqualified.
Not going to happen in Moscow.
@@francishunt562 -- Yep, so true. Sadly.
Yea the US got whipped in 1983 they came out 5th in the world chanpionships
Hardly whipped when Willie Smith went down on the top bend on the third leg. Only three nations have beaten the States properly in the World champs or Olympics since 1983. Great Britain, Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago.

The first and second brazilian ran very bad
Some Americans --- geez --- RIGHT impressed with themselves ... Lol
America boycotted this Olympics otherwise we'd have won.
this should be called dope vs dope💉
Similar way for western athletes... Ben Johnson, Marion Jones, Al Oerter, Angela Issajenko etc
Half these teams wouldn't have even made the final if it was a fully contested games. The US would have destroyed these scrubs.
Well they didn't do much 'destroying' at the fully contested World Championships three years later, Brian. The USSR won that too, from Germany with the US 'scrubs' fifth. And it was Viktor Markin on the anchor here (as the early graphic confirms), not Viktor Burakov
Yeah, but if you remember, the guy who was running the penultimate leg fell. If he hadn't, they had Edwin Moses running anchor.
In 1988 Seoul Olympics, the US team was beaten and whipped badly by the Mighty Soviet Team!
At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the US team equalled the world record of 2:56.16, a full 5 seconds faster than this exhibition. The Soviets failed to make the final...
and there wasn't any doping by the eastern block countries either right? (sarcasm)
Full of drugs
