Fantastic ! Phil Brown with an astonishing run, but also what a great run by the late Todd Bennett, who set Phil Brown up with a chance of a medal. Phil Brown really was a fantastic relay runner. What memories ! Thanks for posting.
The flag the British team took round the track after belongs to our family. I remember one of the runners (pretty sure it was Kriss Akabusi) coming into the stands to ask if he could borrow our flag. We, of course, let him. When the team finished their lap, he came back to us to give it back and we kept telling him it was okay, you can keep it, you earned it, etc. He insisted we keep it and we have that flag to this day.
Phil Brown is my favourite athlete of all time. As a 400m runner he was good but put him in a 4 x 400 and he was astonishing. I just loved the way he would close everyone down and then just wait and wait before boom! Britain has another medal.
As David Coleman said at the time Phil Brown never panicked, he even slowed down and tucked inside like a distance runner, because he knew he had the speed to beat them on the straight.
Phil Brown was always my relay hero. If there's anyone who is a good example of a team player in athletics it was him. My only regret when I watch this, is ordering Todd out of the hut at Dumfries! He was a gent and took it well. Mind you, he was also a hero for being a gutsy runner. I love watching this though, to remind me of the importance of being the Mr Average who can get a result everytime. Well done Phil!
Outstanding leg by Todd Bennett. He'll be missed more than he knows. All of Southampton is in mourning today. Rest easy Todd, heres hoping your squad do the business for you tonight.
Babers for the U.S., ooh you could see him just reeling back the leaders. What gloriously long stride and smooth form. He did all the damage in his last 200 meters and it was over from that point. Such a strong leg and that really was the key.
not really a fair comment. Frayne LED at the first changeover, Clarke ran a 43.92 and 3rd leg Gary Minihan was only overtaken by the Olympic champion. All extremely good runs. Rick Mitchell was silver medallist in Moscow 4 years earlier but had had injury problems which prevented him reaching peak fitness in time. Hence only relay duties in LA. Interestingly it's still the Australian record 28 years later
+Sall Abraham I remember it too and tried to emulate our runners when I was asked to step in and run the 400m in the southern league. Full of adrenaline I set off far too fast and ran well under 23 seconds for the first 200m. I held on until the final bend before 'blowing up'' . I ended up walking over the finish line with my legs screaming in pain and felt close to blacking out. I can't repeat what the team captain said. I ran a hopeless 100m relay leg as I had nothing left and my legs still hurt
An interesting fact - until 2011 the Aust Team in this race is the only team ever in any 4x400 to break 3 mins and not run a place. By comparison the Aust Olympic Team in 2004 ran almost a second slower and got a silver medal. JR
Phil Brown is only really known in Britain by those who know a bit about athletics… he is one of the greatest British athletes of all time and arguably the best British relay runner
The '80 silver medallist Rick Mitchell was just a bit past his best and the awesome 18 year old talent of Darren Clark wasn't quite enough to get Australia the silver. What a race!
Ha, yes, but not as one-sided as this one (check the comments ). Still, it's an epic effort at the Mexico record. ua-cam.com/video/3WFrlNWAA2M/v-deo.html
As we all know it's not the winning that counts, it's the taking part. You could always go and listen to Carol Lewis shrieking her head off for three minutes on the American broadcasts, and I bet she'll be just as one-sided.
Yeah but as most of the American's, Soviets and east germans were on some form of drugs, its was left to was left to the rest to keep the honour of the Olympic movement
I realize the broadcaster is British, but must say I was at least a little surprised he didn't seem to give the Americans much credit or even mention at all (other than the almost obligatory)! Congratulations to the British silver medalist, but the USA was incredible here -- especially by the end!
I thought the same for a long time, watching these videos over and over. They needed another Darren Clarke to run the final leg to get a medal. I doubt that someone like Clarke could have held off Team USA. But I think it would have been a silver. The anchor runner was kind of disappointing.
Was it not a tactical choice to put the stronger runners on first so that the team would be in contention? If they'd been 6th and made it up to 4th on the last leg they would not have been so high profile
Had it been a prime Rick Mitchell (1980 form when he won silver in 44.84) then he may have held them off. Unfortunately Rick was well past his best by this stage.
I doubt it. David Coleman (of the BBC) was one of the most respected commentators in the world at the time and knew his stuff. I think he was more surprised at the American's position before the third leg runner opened up an unassailable lead.
I was on the JA 4x400. Lead off. In the semis the coach subbed out a runner for a runner from his HS. We went from 2nd to 6th in the semis (Nigeria and W. Germany I recall in there) on that leg. Bert Cameron was injured so we would not have medaled but at least had a chance just being in it. This is is the first time I've watched it since '84. Too painful.
jsobawse because it's British commentary and the US are always so far ahead the gold is assured in the 4x4, which most other nations find a bit boring ;)
And that may b try, but they were winning and competing for a WR. That has to count for something if we r talkin the Olympics. Athletes train hard for this. Shouldn't they be showered with praise if they're dominating their event??
British Broadcaster, British interest. Presumably the Nigerian commentators were talking about the Nigerians and the Australians were talking about etc.
It's nothing unusual for the locals to focus on their athletes. I've seen multiple broadcasts of the same race with different anmouncers, and they all focus on the athletes from their home country.
1984 LA Olympics as a joke without the Mighty Eastern Block lead by the Soviet Union and East Germany. This was a competition of high school amateur athletes from US and other Western and their slave countries like Japan
@@darrylnelson05 USA and USSR men's basketball teams meet twice in Olympics, 1976 and 1988, in both occasions, the US was defeated and beaten badly by the Mighty Soviet Team. The Soviet Basketball was more powerful than the US basketball!

If you gave Phil Brown a sniff, he would always deliver! What a fabulous team performance.

As a American i love to hear the worlds announcers call races. They are looking at all 8 teams and know the runners of all the teams.
As opposed to the American commentators who have their heads firmly shoved up their own arses and can only see the American runners you mean?
Sad that American viewers of the olympics get such a poor, blinkered service from their commentators.
But ... I'm not really surprised
Todd Bennett, gentleman, racer, superb. Missed dearly

Brilliant Brown did it again.
The entire GB squad pulled a blinder.
Great memories.
As David Coleman said at the time Phil Brown never panicked, he even slowed down and tucked inside like a distance runner, because he knew he had the speed to beat them on the straight.
RIP Todd Bennett. Used to love watching those races, especially with Phil Brown bringing home the bacon!
I wish British Athletics would invite Phil Brown to present a medal at the national championships, he'd get a huge ovation
Brilliant idea ! It has to happen.
@@keithf_ and did it happen? nah! didn't think so...
Superb GB run !!! RIP Todd Bennett. Hail the ever brilliant Phil Brown.
Superb running by Aust in that they gave all and made this a wonderful relay spectacle

great watch todd bennett and phil brown ran brilliantly was a great performance to win the silver medal behind the powerful usa team

Phil Brown is the sort of guy who you cannot dump doping allegations on. Despite just having good 400 m times his anchor legs were phenomenal.

It is actually kind of sad. We should have a 2min58 or even a 2min57 team by now. Our guys should be breaking 3 minutes on a regular basis.

Australia just a bit unlucky with final runner Rick Mitchell below his best. But their time is still the Australian record nearly 40 years later.

Did anyone notice that the US won that race?
yes?
Thomas Simpson yes we did, we just don’t care. Maybe you could go watch the American commentary version.
To be fair, Ron Pickering did.
The camera didn't even catch the Nigerian team celebration....sad
Who cares if it was posted by a British concern. Either watch it and enjoy it or don't bother.
Must suck to be Australia in this race. Lead for a large portion of the race and in medal contention until the last 75 meters.
