      I could have swore I've seen a video years back of one of these or maybe it was the 96 Impala SS with the same engine on one of those police chase videos and it was out running the Crown Vic no problem so I always wondered as a kid who is born only in 1990 I know I'm young I always was surprised that they started using the Crown Vic over the Caprice because it always seem to be the faster car and in my opinion Chevy Caprice was better than the Crown Vic but that's just my taste as an officer what's your opinion would you have taken these Caprices over the Crown Vic at the time? I always wanted to ask somebody who was in the service during the time these were being used

      @@seattlejdmcivic The Caprice had a few things going against it. The LT1 optispark issues, changing tires in it was a bitch, and it got horrendous mileage. The Crown Vic had the 4.6L V8. While relatively slow, it was an absolute bulletproof engine. You could beat on it routinely and with standard (and easy) maintenance, it just kept running. Police departments could easily get double the miles out of a Crown Vic that they would out of a Caprice, or Impala. And the last gen Crown Vic was nearly tripling the miles that departments got out of the newer Chargers- but the Crown Vic would not keep up with them. The Crown Vic was also notoriously good at jumping curbs without damaging the vehicle.

      Hardly any Caprice made it past the 100K miles, GM quality was absolutely zero in the 90-s. I bought mine from LAPD with 63K miles, by 103K miles it was unfixable, and I treated it like a baby, all service done by the dealer.

    Love the black & white paint scheme. From a distance, those Caprices always looked like Shamu, the killer whale. The LT-1 350 (5.7L) V8 was the best feature of that era Caprice.

    What a beautiful vehicle, and I bet you put a lot of work into it.
    In case you want to sell it one day please let me now. I‘d be more than happy to give this beauty a good home. I recall these units from my childhood days

    The first brand new *CHP* *9C1* *Caprice* that I saw was a 1994 model. It still had its window sticker on the left-rear window, so I read it. Two items stuck out to me:
    1.) Front cabin had cloth seating with carpeting. Rear had a vinyl seat with rubber mat.
    2.) Digital 'Certified' speedometer.

    I had a 94 LAPD unit, the transmission didn't last and they couldn't fix it right. After that it was all downhill.

    • @johnhughes9019
      @johnhughes9019 Рік тому

      Probably filled with the wrong trans fluid. That era 9C1 (and like the taxi model) had "Silicone Trans Fluid" from the factory. IIRC, that was Dex-4 or Dex-5 . So, it's entirely possible that someone at the service garage (there were numerous around L.A.) refilled the trans with Dex-3 instead of the correct fluid.

    • @NorceCodine
      @NorceCodine Рік тому +1

      @@johnhughes9019 I don't think so. That's why everybody sold their Impalas SS before hitting the 60K miles (when the transmission was about to slip) because it was unfixable. Mine went bad at 80K, dealer charged $1800 to overhaul it but it was shit. The transmission was not matched to the engine's torque, GM just picked one off the shelf.

    • @johnhughes9019
      @johnhughes9019 Рік тому

      @@NorceCodine , Interesting. I didn't realise that the trans was such a weak link in the 9C1 package, esp. since the 700-R4 (or whatever its alpha-numeric nomenclature was back then) was such a solid piece in other applications .
      I seem to remember that some agencies would upgrade the transmissions with shift-improver kits.
      Er'ry once in a while I see a couple of 1994 (rarest year) - 1996 Impala SS around. They're usually either super clean and original, or buggered up with f'ugly rims and bubbly tint.
      Ne'er-the-less, I still hold the 1991 - 1996 Caprice in high regard (esp. the 1993 & later). This CHP spec model exemplifies my adoration .

      They are the standard CHP pushbars, still used today on Vic’s, Chargers, Explorers, etc. just in different sizes. (If you have trouble finding a Setina style pushbar like I did, a Crown Vic one will fit, and look good)
