in italy we have a brand called TM racing that produces supermotards that are a great alternative to ktm because they build good quality handmade italian supermotards designed for that specifical type of riding at the same price or even less of a ktm and they are even street legal (according to Italian law)
I watched this video when it came out and loved it. I just watched it again today while standing in front of my 2021 drz400sm in the garage and you made me so much more excited for the spring to come and the dreaded snow to melt. I started riding on an mt07 which is known for being a fun, torquey, easily flickable feeling 700 like a big street dirtbike in a naked bike body and it is Loads of fun. But I live near trails and grew up riding dirtbikes. I then got my drz400sm there is just something about it. I can have more fun in more places without breaking as many laws. If it isn't just speed you are looking for a supermoto is by far more smiles per mile. Easy to say I sold my mt07 after a month of buying my new drz. And I can only imagine the adrenaline from an exc500f or a 690 but the drz400sm is as reliable as it gets for a supermoto and as someone that works on their cars, machines it is something to appreciate. Being able to beat the living piss out of my bike and use its full potential on any road or trail and needing the most basic of maintenance on stretched intervals is a quite beautiful thing. I had a SXV450 as my first bike and can't recommend it enough, learner approved too in Australia too. Only 10-15 kilos heavier than a CRF450 but with registration and even more revs available. Soft limiter was 10,000 rpm and hard limiter was 12,000 rpm factory spec topping out at 167 kph in 5th gear.

I’ve got a 2020 690, it’s all true, fast AF. Change out the Clutch master slave, get Vanasche fuel filler, change headlight to Dual 5, Wings exhaust (slip-on) and a few other mods. So much fun and never gets old or less exciting.
I lived in SF. I put street tires on my BRP. It had plenty power but the best thing was the view. You can't see crap on a gsxr. You can see something bad coming a lot quicker on a dirt bike and nothing could beat you in town.
Just sold my 06 KTM 625 SMC to a co-worker and he is nothing but smiles for it. It took him two years to convince me to get rid of it. I also owned a 2015 Hypermotard SP which I used as a down payment on an F150 a few years ago. The Ducati was a fun bike for the back roads of the Oregon Coast, but as a former motocrosser of 22 years the KTM was more fun with less power.
I have heard the SWM's are heavy. Yamaha made a dedicated Super Moto version of the WR250R, they called it the WR250X, rare as hens teeth but I did see one for sale about a year ago, going for the same price as the R's at that time. You can spot them easy because they have black forks and frame.
I built my Xr650r with takasago supermoto wheels. High compression piston and FCR carburator from Crf450. It was a rocket 🚀 i miss that bike. BRP for life
I converted my Honda CRF250r (09 mod) to SM, it is so fun and effortless to ride on the road, Ive ridden liter bikes and those are exciting but theres just something about these crotch rockets!
Love the content man! I totally agree that our AMA Supermoto Series is dead. Got my first National win last year in Sturgis and this year they havent even released a schedule yet! Was planning to chase the championship this year but guess not haha. North American Supermoto Shootout is working on some great things though!
I've ridden some other dirt bikes, but I've always been into road bikes. So, one day, when i finally bought a dream bike, i wasn't sure what I really wanted. I split all my contenders down, until i had narrowed it down between a 2020 KTM SMC -R and a 890 Duke R naked road bike. While between the two, I'm fairly satisfied with my purchase of the Duke. However, while still daydreaming of pure supermoto, I think that my choice was a rough one with KTM either way. I had heard a number of recall issues for both the SMC and the Duke. The SMC looks like a cheap quality trap, honestly. My bike, bought brand new off the dealership floor with 1 mile on it, started leaking oil from the head gasket almost immediately, and pretty heavily. I took it back for a warranty issue. It ended up taking a month and a half. Apparently that was a month straight of pending KTM's approval to cover it. Every time I need the simplest of parts, it can be a potential month or more wait time. KTM is notorious for having their more rare merchandise and parts wait list longer than 6 months. Great bike to ride, lots of fun. Still not pleased with the price point and the maintenance of this bike. It was like 13-15 Gs after taxes and options, and it's constantly shredding tires, chains, sprockets, etc. Guess that's what it's supposed to do. However, its a niche enough bike, that while its unique to ride, it doesn't exactly do anything better than other bikes you could get for the same price. Although although, it does have the best torque of it's engine class. That's kinda KTM's deal over the YZ's and MT09's. Anyway, cheers!
Rims and fork to accommodate them are the difference. You can take a regular dirt bike with stock rims and get street tires that fit those rims. But these bikes have straight up street bike rims and tires. Which just won't fit on a dirt bike without major modifications.
My first ‘big bike’ was a Drz400sm…was an amazing platform to learn all kinds of illegal riding. Over thirty bikes and 18 years later my SM of choice is a BRP XR650R…I’ll never sell my pig. It’s brilliant.
I made my yz450fx street legal. I have never had so much fun on a vehicle. I can rip it around town and ride it right up to the trails and motocross track. It’s an insane all around bike. It only costs me $75 a year for insurance.
Ooof, at the 16:28 mark you called an XR650R a 650L... ouch (a pimped one too with CRF forks spliced on and a massive front brake rotor). Forgivable, sort of... it's Honda's fault for making one letter differentiate two completely different bikes. But still... if you kept finding XRRs in SUMO trim but not XRLs... it's telling you something, no? I wish you'd have mentioned the 650R as a potential SUMO at least. Forums are full of XRR SUMOs and they look amazing. Guys love 'em even though I know they don't have the punch of a 701 or any of the new bikes you mentioned. Still, I can't imagine they'd not be better than the 650L in every respect. I have two XRRs now and will one day take one of them down the SUMO road... when my African desert riding finally brakes me or I move somewhere with better tarmac... probably about the time I'm too chickensh*t to ride it properly, but it'll be a blast to try!
You can litterarely get anny enduro/mot-cross with an official Titel and convert it to a Supermoto,there are so manny aftermarket parts these days and i find them quite easy to work on,do some repairs,just a fun breed of bike ^-^
I have a 2020 Yamaha WR250R. I love it as a dual sport. You Can carve a canyon then go ride a trial without changing a thing. Cheapest, yet the best bike I've ever ridden. Will hang onto until death Lmao. I'm literally getting it buried next to me...I'm not kidding even a little bit...seriously.
Riding a XT as a Supermoto on the road gets you some weird looks, as it is to heavy to be a real SM. Lacks some topspeed. And not that great for turning in soft sand. But it can reign on the twisties like any other SM, and still rocking highway and not having to work on the engine every 40 hours ;) Although I would like a nice two-stroke as a secondary bike. ;)
Living in O’ahu, the only real supermoto we can have is WR250, DRZ and a few others. Kinda hard. No conversions allowed. So, my favorite supermoto type bike has been a Sur Ron.
Solid vid but I’m disappointed to not see the best bikes of the sport. TM needs at least a shoutout since they’re the only manufacturer to make a bike for sole purpose of supermoto. Literally designed from the ground up for the sport and has been winning the world championships for over a decade. The 8 time world champ Thomas Chareyre and the current world champ Marc Reiner Smidt and countless other world class races are on a Tm because they’re absolutely the best you can buy for a similar price of a fs450/SMR brand new. Every supermoto you can buy is technically converted from a dirt bike, including the KTM SMR and FS450 because they’re built from the mx plattform, but the TM SMX is designed and built for supermoto and nothing else. They definitely deserve high praise anytime you talk about supermoto bikes or the sport. Ktm put supermoto bikes on the back burner and ignored the sport for a long time but TM has been dedicated to these bikes and sport since they’ve got into it.
@@BornAGoon yes. The smx is the race bike and the smr is street legal. They also have dual sports and enduros available too. All can be purchased in the U.S. from tm dealers or other authorized dealers.
Own two WR250X here, one has 40,000 km, done no maintenance, just fill gas, change oil every year, oil filter every 2 years. Less maintenance than my car. I could see and feel the quality of this bike, it's over built for a 250cc
I have a yamaha xt350 enduro thinking about converting it over what would be cool if you could somehow make a yz450 street legal them you could possibly have 2 stroke power in a supermoto setup
Thanks for the info. I'm new to the motorcycle world still feeling my way around and I really like the idea of super moto didn't one the history. I come from Chinese pit bikes and that's what I imagine I'll be doing since I'm familiar and don't need to go real fast. But I also imagine I'll grow and eventually want the power. For now I'm starting with a 150cc scooter just to feel it out since it's dirt cheap. Do you have any videos on smaller cc bikes?

I think that super Moto kind of scares people and it’s a niche thing. It takes some guts and most of the people that are going to ride that way are you going to want to customize what they have anyway. The DRZ super Moto version got popular for a minute but there are used ones all over come anytime I look for used bikes there’s a DRZ super Moto, But I think it’s more of a racer type mentality and people with that mentality usually want to customize and build their own stuff. The manufacturers are only going to catch on if it means sales or the racing becomes huge and it’s popular enough to sell a lot of bikes. That would be my guess anyway from what I’ve seen but it’s one of the best types of bike racing for me to watch it’s got the excitement of both street and dirt but honestly unless somebody crashes Street can get pretty boring, this gives it some flair and excitement. I’m not sure unless it becomes incredibly popular, that it will ever really take it off in the industry, it is capable of more but it takes some actual skill to utilize it and any time you do a crossover you get people who want something else. The dirt guys are going to want the nobby‘s the street guys Aren’t gonna want a taller softer suspension and I think the people who are going to like a super Moto are gonna be people have real skills. Unfortunately, myself included for many many years, most riders go out and buy a bike and hang out with her friends and really never develop their skills. I say that if somebody is ridden for 30 years and still keep finding flaws and realize that I didn’t survive off of scale I survive off of luck. Lol. Super Moto isn’t great for just putting around on the street, it’ll work but it’s tall and a little weird, street bike is just much easier to drive on the street and dirtbike riders wanting hobbies I don’t care about the street as much. This is kind of the racing version of dual purpose but they’re harder to ride and take a lot more skill. I think they always throw street tires and bigger brakes on the dirtbike but I just don’t think there’s enough money in it for them to go crazy with it, I think it will just stay a racing thing we’re people have to figure it out themselves and build what they want. From a culture standpoint it’s kind of like the old chopper guys. They didn’t want to go out and buy a production bike they wanted to build something unique. They’ll sell the DRZ‘s and the calyx but you can tell from the used market there a bunch of them out there and I just don’t think they appeal to the masses. Personally I love them and I think it’s awesome and it’s incredible to watch, it’s just not the way I ride I want to do a purpose that dirt cable and I just don’t drive fast on the street and unfortunately I think that’s what more people want. It’s incredibly hard to find a good price on used dual sports but I can pull up Facebook and find three or 4 DRZ Super Moto on the marketplace. I would like to see the manufactures get into it and really start supporting the racing circuits as well but I just don’t think they see enough profit in it. :/ For me if I was going to do this I think I would find a DR 350 Suzuki with the six speed, there are a couple quarts in the motor I would get in there and fix and I’d probably need some new forks and the beef up the swing arm And shocks but with a big bore kit turning that into 440 you’re getting a more powerful DRC 400 for about the same weight and a six speed. Just throw DRZ carburetor on there or something better and I’m just guessing as an amateur from the peanut gallery but i’m thinking that could be pretty good for a bigger rider.
just finished watching the video and it couldn't be more obvious that this is a video made from the north american pointof view, here in europe you can make a supermoto out of anything, we have yamaha dt/yz/wr, husqvarna (husaberg) wr/fe/fc/fs, ktm exc/xc/xcw/smr, tm as a whole, beta as a whole, honda crf (the whole line), suzuki rmz/rmx/drz, kawasaki kx(f), this includes 2 and 4 strokes, for us supermoto is anything we want it to be, you just turned 16 and want a supermoto? get a dt 125 or an exc 125 or whatever 125 enduro bike you want and put supermoto wheels on it, you can make them legal or they already come legalized, it really is better here I feel like, I'm sorry that you have to resort to the 690 because it's a terrible bike when you compare it to a well built 450 from any other manufacturer... it really is only better when it comes to maintaining it, but even the new 450s from ktm are becoming better at that so hopefully the 690 line will die so people can enjoy the true feeling of a supermoto
I bought my 01 xr650r new. It’s now a SM with Hot cam, Baha lighting, FMF pipe. It’s got blinkers, horn and a license plate. SM tires, nobbies even a rear paddle for the dunes. This bike is, Go to Jail, fun. I’m 66 years old, still riding.
I’ve had a drz400sm and now have a KTM 500 excf. Both are excellent bikes and I would gladly own and ride a drz400sm again. The KTM is just a different breed. It’s the most aggressive and amazing bike that I’ve ridden. I’ve been riding for many years and own many types of bikes and a supermoto will always be my freedom on two wheels. Their just the most fun.

I've been a sport bike guy for the last 6 or 7 years of riding. But im leaning more towards sumo. They just seem a lot more fun lol I enjoy twisties more than straight line speed, personally. And these seem so fun to rip around corners and wheelies and shit 😂😂 simple maintenance too
I recently got my personal unicorn dual sport, a plated '18 KTM 300-XCW, and I've been loving it as a dirt bike but it's so fun around town on the road that I'm burning through dirt tires (I just can't help myself) Now I feel like I HAVE to try the sumo thing.
I built my supermoto out of a 11 husaberg 450fe. Absolutely love it as well. Hands down the best and most fun bike I've owned by far. I also have the dirt set up as well. You never mentioned tm which I'm surprised by. Look into them they are really killer bikes. If you ride a sumo your Def a different kinda rider. If someone is thinking of buying one do it. You will not be disappointed in the slightest.
Just turned 62 and on my third year with my 08 Yamaha WR450F SM conversion. I love it put about 2000 miles a year on it (have two other bikes). Besides the engine mods. I have also done suspension mods. with heaver springs (for my weight) stiffer. Added some extra lights so I can ride it to work at 5 am. Very fun! Still trying to ride wheelies like I did when I was 16 on my dirt bikes.
I am 61 years young and ride a "hybrid" Spermoto. It is a 2019 KTM 690 Enduro R that I have turned into a SuperM. I have owned a great many motorcycles but this one is my absolute favorite! Warp9 Elite 17" wheels, Tekmo titanium header, Wings titanium exhaust can, KTM racing bar, adjustable levers, Rottweiler dongle and 02 delete, K&M filter, SC seat, Savage steering damper, Avon Trail rider tires, Perun Moto tail bracket, and integrated license bracket. I've had a 00 XR650r supermoto for 6 years now. It's a blast. I swap the stock wheels back on for trail riding. You are right about sport bike riders not knowing what to think when they get passed by a big red pig coming out of a corner with my fat arse on it. 🤣 Hell just yesterday chased down my buddy on his sv650 then his friend on his mt09 on these back roads out in Mexico. When we stopped the guy on the MT09 was like "wth is that thing. It's a rocketship." I love that reaction almost as much as the look of disappointment when I pull up on a "dual sport" to a sportbike ride.
The first Honda you showed was the 650R or the big red pig(BRP) only water cooled XR...only made from 2000 to 2009 I believe truly a beast I loved owning and riding the shit out of it.
I am 65 years young and ride two bikes one is a hayabusa turbo street fighter making 400 hp to the rear and the other is a 2022 KTM690 smcr and it is tricked out. The only thing that bothers me is, my jaw hurts for cringing all the time!! To much fun am going to do track days on it as well.
Up here in Canada trying to get a SuMo is tough because you can't convert a dirt bike due to our laws. It has to be a dual sport, or it's illegal and doesn't count as a road bike. Another reason why dual sport bikes are so expensive and hold their value so well second hand here these days.
Sound like you are just have to step up and get a Dr.Z 400sm. You'll love it, and it sounds like they hold their value, even if you don't for some reason.
I managed to luck out-fellow Canadian BCer here- I have a converted KTM 530 XCRW baha bike that was converted to street legal before the laws changed. My bike is still st legal because it was legal before the rule change.
new, sure there's not a plethora of bikes. But there's plenty of older motards that I would give my wisdom teeth for and have over the years: Huqvarna Nox (royalty), Husky SM510, 2005 Husaberg Fs650S -Force Edition (my current bike), 2007+ Husaberg FS650, Husaberg FS570, Aprilia SXV - these are all next level bikes and I would take them any day.
Few more options out there too. Tm make some fantastic supermotos, also check out the CCM R30 definitely old school Sumo. I've a had a few supermoto's now but settled for ktm 250 Exc. It's definitely worth converting an enduro everything is better quality and build to be ridden hard even on the tarmac keeping them maintained is a full time job but the fun is second to none. Bro have you ever seen tm motards? They are made in Italy! They make 2 strokes and 4 strokes, from 85 cc up to 500 cc if I don't get it wrong. In Italy it is a really famous manufacturer, especially whit the 2 stroke 125 cc motards, made with carburetors or with fuel injection, bought primarily from 16 yo with 15 hp, modified up to 30 hp per wheel and having only 100 kg of weight
If you want to understand/get a good look at the supermoto community you need to check us scandinavians/europeans out. I personally got my A1 license and bought a KTM 125 EXC 2006 as a first bike, and that is sumo converted and have a smr 450 front suspension on a 660 SMC trippleclamp and a complete fs450 (2023) front brake setup. A quickshifter ;) And tons more. I dont think there is any better place than scandinavia to get a understanding of the custom/converted supermoto scene!
I grew up on dirt bikes. Always thought it would be nice to have one on the street. Went Fzr on the road, but in my 50s I can't handle the riding position anymore. Looking at an SMR 450 today for my future riding fun
The most underrated bikes are the husaberg fe series 2009-2012, 70° engine and its reliable as hell, always gets great lubrication even in long and high wheelies. Best purchase ive ever made. Definitely recommend them to someone who wants a supermoto in class with the ktm exc 450s and husqy 450s but more reliable and cheaper

My first ‘big bike’ was a Drz400sm…was an amazing platform to learn all kinds of illegal riding. Over thirty bikes and 18 years later my SM of choice is a BRP XR650R…I’ll never sell my pig. It’s brilliant.
I made my yz450fx street legal. I have never had so much fun on a vehicle. I can rip it around town and ride it right up to the trails and motocross track. It’s an insane all around bike. It only costs me $75 a year for insurance.

Ooof, at the 16:28 mark you called an XR650R a 650L... ouch (a pimped one too with CRF forks spliced on and a massive front brake rotor). Forgivable, sort of... it's Honda's fault for making one letter differentiate two completely different bikes. But still... if you kept finding XRRs in SUMO trim but not XRLs... it's telling you something, no? I wish you'd have mentioned the 650R as a potential SUMO at least. Forums are full of XRR SUMOs and they look amazing. Guys love 'em even though I know they don't have the punch of a 701 or any of the new bikes you mentioned. Still, I can't imagine they'd not be better than the 650L in every respect. I have two XRRs now and will one day take one of them down the SUMO road... when my African desert riding finally brakes me or I move somewhere with better tarmac... probably about the time I'm too chickensh*t to ride it properly, but it'll be a blast to try!

You can litterarely get anny enduro/mot-cross with an official Titel and convert it to a Supermoto,there are so manny aftermarket parts these days and i find them quite easy to work on,do some repairs,just a fun breed of bike ^-^

I have a 2020 Yamaha WR250R. I love it as a dual sport. You Can carve a canyon then go ride a trial without changing a thing. Cheapest, yet the best bike I've ever ridden. Will hang onto until death Lmao. I'm literally getting it buried next to me...I'm not kidding even a little bit...seriously.

Riding a XT as a Supermoto on the road gets you some weird looks, as it is to heavy to be a real SM. Lacks some topspeed.
And not that great for turning in soft sand.
But it can reign on the twisties like any other SM, and still rocking highway and not having to work on the engine every 40 hours ;)
Although I would like a nice two-stroke as a secondary bike. ;)
Living in O’ahu, the only real supermoto we can have is WR250, DRZ and a few others. Kinda hard. No conversions allowed.
So, my favorite supermoto type bike has been a Sur Ron.

Solid vid but I’m disappointed to not see the best bikes of the sport. TM needs at least a shoutout since they’re the only manufacturer to make a bike for sole purpose of supermoto. Literally designed from the ground up for the sport and has been winning the world championships for over a decade. The 8 time world champ Thomas Chareyre and the current world champ Marc Reiner Smidt and countless other world class races are on a Tm because they’re absolutely the best you can buy for a similar price of a fs450/SMR brand new. Every supermoto you can buy is technically converted from a dirt bike, including the KTM SMR and FS450 because they’re built from the mx plattform, but the TM SMX is designed and built for supermoto and nothing else. They definitely deserve high praise anytime you talk about supermoto bikes or the sport. Ktm put supermoto bikes on the back burner and ignored the sport for a long time but TM has been dedicated to these bikes and sport since they’ve got into it.

Own two WR250X here, one has 40,000 km, done no maintenance, just fill gas, change oil every year, oil filter every 2 years. Less maintenance than my car. I could see and feel the quality of this bike, it's over built for a 250cc

Thanks for the info. I'm new to the motorcycle world still feeling my way around and I really like the idea of super moto didn't one the history. I come from Chinese pit bikes and that's what I imagine I'll be doing since I'm familiar and don't need to go real fast. But I also imagine I'll grow and eventually want the power. I think that super Moto kind of scares people and it’s a niche thing. It takes some guts and most of the people that are going to ride that way are you going to want to customize what they have anyway. The DRZ super Moto version got popular for a minute but there are used ones all over come anytime I look for used bikes there’s a DRZ super Moto, But I think it’s more of a racer type mentality and people with that mentality usually want to customize and build their own stuff. The manufacturers are only going to catch on if it means sales or the racing becomes huge and it’s popular enough to sell a lot of bikes. That would be my guess anyway from what I’ve seen but it’s one of the best types of bike racing for me to watch it’s got the excitement of both street and dirt but honestly unless somebody crashes Street can get pretty boring, this gives it some flair and excitement.
I’m not sure unless it becomes incredibly popular, that it will ever really take it off in the industry, it is capable of more but it takes some actual skill to utilize it and any time you do a crossover you get people who want something else. The dirt guys are going to want the nobby‘s the street guys Aren’t gonna want a taller softer suspension and I think the people who are going to like a super Moto are gonna be people have real skills. Unfortunately, myself included for many many years, most riders go out and buy a bike and hang out with her friends and really never develop their skills. I say that if somebody is ridden for 30 years and still keep finding flaws and realize that I didn’t survive off of scale I survive off of luck. Lol. Super Moto isn’t great for just putting around on the street, it’ll work but it’s tall and a little weird, street bike is just much easier to drive on the street and dirtbike riders wanting hobbies I don’t care about the street as much. This is kind of the racing version of dual purpose but they’re harder to ride and take a lot more skill. I think they always throw street tires and bigger brakes on the dirtbike but I just don’t think there’s enough money in it for them to go crazy with it, I think it will just stay a racing thing we’re people have to figure it out themselves and build what they want.
From a culture standpoint it’s kind of like the old chopper guys. They didn’t want to go out and buy a production bike they wanted to build something unique. They’ll sell the DRZ‘s and the calyx but you can tell from the used market there a bunch of them out there and I just don’t think they appeal to the masses. Personally I love them and I think it’s awesome and it’s incredible to watch, it’s just not the way I ride I want to do a purpose that dirt cable and I just don’t drive fast on the street and unfortunately I think that’s what more people want. It’s incredibly hard to find a good price on used dual sports but I can pull up Facebook and find three or 4 DRZ Super Moto on the marketplace. I would like to see the manufactures get into it and really start supporting the racing circuits as well but I just don’t think they see enough profit in it. :/
For me if I was going to do this I think I would find a DR 350 Suzuki with the six speed, there are a couple quarts in the motor I would get in there and fix and I’d probably need some new forks and the beef up the swing arm And shocks but with a big bore kit turning that into 440 you’re getting a more powerful DRC 400 for about the same weight and a six speed. Just throw DRZ carburetor on there or something better and I’m just guessing as an amateur from the peanut gallery but i’m thinking that could be pretty good for a bigger rider.

just finished watching the video and it couldn't be more obvious that this is a video made from the north american pointof view, here in europe you can make a supermoto out of anything, we have yamaha dt/yz/wr, husqvarna (husaberg) wr/fe/fc/fs, ktm exc/xc/xcw/smr, tm as a whole, beta as a whole, honda crf (the whole line), suzuki rmz/rmx/drz, kawasaki kx(f), this includes 2 and 4 strokes, for us supermoto is anything we want it to be, you just turned 16 and want a supermoto? get a dt 125 or an exc 125 or whatever 125 enduro bike you want and put supermoto wheels on it, you can make them legal or they already come legalized, it really is better here I feel like, I'm sorry that you have to resort to the 690 because it's a terrible bike when you compare it to a well built 450 from any other manufacturer... it really is only better when it comes to maintaining it, but even the new 450s from ktm are becoming better at that so hopefully the 690 line will die so people can enjoy the true feeling of a supermoto

I bought my 01 xr650r new. It’s now a SM with Hot cam, Baha lighting, FMF pipe. It’s got blinkers, horn and a license plate. SM tires, nobbies even a rear paddle for the dunes. This bike is, Go to Jail, fun. I’m 66 years old, still riding.
I’ve had a drz400sm and now have a KTM 500 excf. Both are excellent bikes and I would gladly own and ride a drz400sm again. The KTM is just a different breed. It’s the most aggressive and amazing bike that I’ve ridden. I’ve been riding for many years and own many types of bikes and a supermoto will always be my freedom on two wheels. Their just the most fun.

I've been a sport bike guy for the last 6 or 7 years of riding. But im leaning more towards sumo. They just seem a lot more fun lol I enjoy twisties more than straight line speed, personally. And these seem so fun to rip around corners and wheelies and shit 😂😂 simple maintenance too
I recently got my personal unicorn dual sport, a plated '18 KTM 300-XCW, and I've been loving it as a dirt bike but it's so fun around town on the road that I'm burning through dirt tires (I just can't help myself) Now I feel like I HAVE to try the sumo thing.
I built my supermoto out of a 11 husaberg 450fe. Absolutely love it as well. Hands down the best and most fun bike I've owned by far. I also have the dirt set up as well. You never mentioned tm which I'm surprised by. Look into them they are really killer bikes. If you ride a sumo your Def a different kinda rider. If someone is thinking of buying one do it. You will not be disappointed in the slightest.

Just turned 62 and on my third year with my 08 Yamaha WR450F SM conversion. I love it put about 2000 miles a year on it (have two other bikes). Besides the engine mods. I have also done suspension mods. with heaver springs (for my weight) stiffer. Added some extra lights so I can ride it to work at 5 am. Very fun! Still trying to ride wheelies like I did when I was 16 on my dirt bikes.
I am 61 years young and ride a "hybrid" Spermoto. It is a 2019 KTM 690 Enduro R that I have turned into a SuperM. I have owned a great many motorcycles but this one is my absolute favorite!

I've had a 00 XR650r supermoto for 6 years now. It's a blast. I swap the stock wheels back on for trail riding. You are right about sport bike riders not knowing what to think when they get passed by a big red pig coming out of a corner with my fat arse on it. 🤣 Hell just yesterday chased down my buddy on his sv650 then his friend on his mt09 on these back roads out in Mexico. When we stopped the guy on the MT09 was like "wth is that thing. It's a rocketship." I love that reaction almost as much as the look of disappointment when I pull up on a "dual sport" to a sportbike ride.

I am 65 years young and ride two bikes one is a hayabusa turbo street fighter making 400 hp to the rear and the other is a 2022 KTM690 smcr and it is tricked out. The only thing that bothers me is, my jaw hurts for cringing all the time!! To much fun am going to do track days on it as well.
Up here in Canada trying to get a SuMo is tough because you can't convert a dirt bike due to our laws. It has to be a dual sport, or it's illegal and doesn't count as a road bike. Another reason why dual sport bikes are so expensive and hold their value so well second hand here these days.
Sound like you are just have to step up and get a Dr.Z 400sm. You'll love it, and it sounds like they hold their value, even if you don't for some reason.
I managed to luck out-fellow Canadian BCer here- I have a converted KTM 530 XCRW baha bike that was converted to street legal before the laws changed. My bike is still st legal because it was legal before the rule change.
new, sure there's not a plethora of bikes. But there's plenty of older motards that I would give my wisdom teeth for and have over the years: Huqvarna Nox (royalty), Husky SM510, 2005 Husaberg Fs650S -Force Edition (my current bike), 2007+ Husaberg FS650, Husaberg FS570, Aprilia SXV - these are all next level bikes and I would take them any day.
Few more options out there too.
Tm make some fantastic supermotos, also check out the CCM R30 definitely old school Sumo. I've a had a few supermoto's now but settled for ktm 250 Exc. It's definitely worth converting an enduro everything is better quality and build to be ridden hard even on the tarmac keeping them maintained is a full time job but the fun is second to none. Great content 👌
Bro have you ever seen tm motards? They are made in Italy! They make 2 strokes and 4 strokes, from 85 cc up to 500 cc if I don't get it wrong. In Italy it is a really famous manufacturer, especially whit the 2 stroke 125 cc motards, made with carburetors or with fuel injection, bought primarily from 16 yo with 15 hp, modified up to 30 hp per wheel and having only 100 kg of weight
If you want to understand/get a good look at the supermoto community you need to check us scandinavians/europeans out. I personally got my A1 license and bought a KTM 125 EXC 2006 as a first bike, and that is sumo converted and have a smr 450 front suspension on a 660 SMC trippleclamp and a complete fs450 (2023) front brake setup. A quickshifter ;) And tons more. I dont think there is any better place than scandinavia to get a understanding of the custom/converted supermoto scene!
I grew up on dirt bikes. Always thought it would be nice to have one on the street. Went Fzr on the road, but in my 50s I can't handle the riding position anymore. Looking at an SMR 450 today for my future riding fun
The most underrated bikes are the husaberg fe series 2009-2012, 70° engine and its reliable as hell, always gets great lubrication even in long and high wheelies. Best purchase ive ever made. Definitely recommend them to someone who wants a supermoto in class with the ktm exc 450s and husqy 450s but more reliable and cheaper
