The reason for the change from Pittsburgh to KC was quite mundane. Purely practical, based on what locations they had available in Alberta, Canada. Btw, the podcast with Craig Mazin and Niel Druckmann (hosted by Troy Baker) is worth listening to after each episode. Gives some interesting insights to the writing and creative choices they made.
@Chandller Burse it was $100 million for the whole season, which is more than the first 5 seasons of GoT. there’s a lot of practical effects, various locations, and seamless CGI for the background/infected that take up a lot that. it might not seem necessary but it helps to sell the realism of the environments and atmosphere.
I'm loving the characterization between these two. Ellie's pun book that she kept from…..you know who for later, Joel teaching her how to properly care a gun insinuating the trust he's instilling in her, not to mention how quickly they still get in a lot of progression in despite the short runtime. They hardly waste any time with this. The fact they even gave some depth to some of the raiders here is also a massive plus.
I love the first TLOU game dearly but I'm going to just come out and say it: I think I prefer the more nuanced writing of Joel & Ellie in the show. And that's mostly all down to Craig Mazin. They both seem more realistic and more fully-formed, especially Joel who now actually feels like a multi-layered individual. The game had a great story obviously, but it's the character details which have been worked over and improved upon I think. Something I never expected I'd be saying when I first heard they were going to make a show version, but there it is.
Pedro and bella also developed a close relationship behind the scenes, so I think that definitely comes across. The part where they laugh after the diarrhea joke feels purely them.
Yay you’re back, hope you’re feeling better! I forgot how spot-on you always are when it comes to analyzing scenes and characters, and I’m especially glad to see that you find Kathleen to be an interesting character. So many ppl only focus on the fact that she doesn’t sound/look intimidating for a typical leader and think it’s “bad casting”, but the show obviously characterized her this way for a reason bc they could’ve made her more scary if they wanted to. Absolutely love the use of the pun book in this episode as a crucial benchmark to show the progression of Joel and Ellie’s bond in this episode alone. You’re exactly right that HBO Joel is much more paternal and less angry than game Joel, and I love his entire characterization in the show alongside his realistic injuries from years of survival. Pedro and Bella have an amazing relationship on and off screen, and I’m so excited to see your reaction to the rest of this incredible first season!
I really enjoy antagonists who know they are technically in the wrong, but literally have no desire to do better. I loved the insight into Kathleen that she knows her brother wouldn't approve of her actions, but she simply doesn't care. I think it makes her character interesting. Plus, it was great to see this actress again. I used to love her in Two and a Half Men
I think they said that the city in Canada they picked out to film didn’t look like Pittsburgh layout. So they went with Kansas City because it was closer to what the location looked like.
There's also a podcast hosted by Troy Baker featuring both Craig Mazin and Neil Duckmann there's an episode of the podcast for each episode of the show, the podcast is great :) also great to have you back
Hey Cyn, welcome back! Hope you’re fully recovered from your surgery. There actually is a podcast hosted by Troy Baker with Neil Druckman and the Craig Maizin, where they talk about all of the reasons they made various changes. It’s really interesting and I HIGHLY recommend it!
Cyn, as someone who saw Episode 5, you are not ready for what you're about to experience. And I'll leave it at this: it may even be on par w/ episode 1. And this is indeed w/out question, the greatest VG Adapation to grace the earth.
Apparently gas goes bad pretty fast, all those "buy gas in drums and sell later" never works because I think after a year without 'stabilizers' it becomes shit, not actual that but it becomes unusable after enough time and that's "under the best conditions" according to Roanoke gaming Pedro and Bella are such natural and organic choices to play joel and ellie, it seemed like the two in the games were superheroes with bones of steel they sell that they're actual people. I actually got the 'outstanding in his field joke' had a good laugh to myself watching for the first time xD Also I'm so glad you like coffee I like you so much more haha, I don't care what ellie and dina say Coffee is the sacred *bean* juice
i know you seen from other comments by now about why they chose KC but as a KC native let me just say - they did an AMAZING job making it look like KC!!
In the game the Fireflies liberated Philly but didn't have enough people left to hold the city and Hunters forced them out or eliminated them. in the show It looks like in KC there either wasn't any Fireflies or it was a small garrison who all pulled a Tommy and joined Kathleen instead.
yeah, the ppl of the Pittsburgh QZ worked with the fireflies, before abandoning & turning on them. When supplies started running low... the hunting started.
I've had breathing issues for years and nearly broke my nose in college which made it worse. I needed to get my septum realigned which meant I wasn't on camera for a few weeks.
Thanks for the spoiler reference to Seattle in game two. It was way too early for someone like me who has not played the game to be hearing that. So thanks for nothing!
😂 You are taking that risk anytime to watch a reaction to a franchise that's a decade old and one of the best sold series of all time. You will be fine. That detail isn't as important as you think it is.
You’re so spot on about the someone crossing you in this world. No one ever brings that up

Also, changing the location really makes no difference to the story. Nothing happens in the story that requires for it to be set in Pittsburgh.
@@SidPhoenix2211 plus it makes more sense logistically that they travelled from KC to Wyoming in 3 months than Pittsburgh to Wyoming in 3 months.
Just easier to make Calgary look like KC than Pittsburgh. Simple as that.

@chandllerburse737 It is literally the most expensive first season of a show HBO has ever produced lol.
You can focus down the sight better with one eye but in the end, it's what's best for you.
also, it depends on eye dominance

YES! There is so much subtext to their relationship now and I love how humanized Joel has become. The perfect adaption.
Pedro and bella also developed a close relationship behind the scenes, so I think that definitely comes across. The part where they laugh after the diarrhea joke feels purely them.

this is certainly a pleasant surprise!
Yes 🙌!!!! Cyn Reacts!!!
I hope you are feeling better Cyn!
I hope you are doing well
and take care of yourself
Thank You for your videos

Well it helps tremendously imo that Neil Druckmann is involved and knows exactly how he wants the characters portrayed.

The reason they used Kansas City is because Craig Mazin hates Pittsburgh.
Craig Mazin says in the podcast with Troy Baker the reason for the change is that he just simply hates Pittsburgh. That's it.
Is that really why 😂 that's actually pretty funny
@@CynReactions he’s being farcical
The can following the kid home Jesus u unlocked a memory just now
Frank was from the Baltimore QZ that fell.

She played the game. Why would she not be ready.
@@alexdewayne9392 The way I see it, knowing what was bound to happen, did not help at all.
Hello Cyn! Loving your reactions so far and waiting for the next episode!

Who needs Google maps? Paper maps work excellently.
7:30 his plan was not go through the city but the directions were not clear so they had no choice.
Best surprise of the day!
i know you seen from other comments by now about why they chose KC but as a KC native let me just say - they did an AMAZING job making it look like KC!!
Glad you are doing better. They do mention Pittsburgh later on.
Doing well now! Oddly enough still dealing with low energy levels two months later, but apparently that's normal 😅
there is a podcast by HBO that is totally worth the listen.

7:17 yes try to stay away from cities. They had a truck. I would have been taking that off road and see how much I can push that thing.
Facts. You literally couldn't pay me to go toward a city. Hell you couldn't convince me to even live in this environment 😂
I've been waiting for a new reaction ep to TLOU! Thank you Cyn!😁 Hope you have an awesome day🙏
Cathleen was Rose in Two And A Half Men and both characters are complete 180's of each other
Forgive me I don’t keep up much on updates, why did she get surgery?
I've had breathing issues for years and nearly broke my nose in college which made it worse. I needed to get my septum realigned which meant I wasn't on camera for a few weeks.
@@CynReactions oh my, I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you feel better!🙏🏻
Feeling much better!
We back in business boys!
Finally my god😂
Cathleen was Rose in Two and a Half Men.
They made Sam so much younger which is interesting to me. I wonder if there’s any specific reason for that or if it was just a choice that was made.
Okay
1:31 Nice way of teaching people how to shoot
