26:28 In game Ellie gets exposed to spores to convince Joel she is immune. So the TV series producers had to find another method of demonstrating to Joel her immunity since they weren't doing the spore rout of the game.
The actress playing the professor at the beginning was absolutely phenomenal. What a performance. If you go back and watch it again watch the details in her mannerisms. Not just the shaking cup, but she speeds up her breathing like a person panicking as well. That was a master class performance.
Fun fact: The Actors that play the clickers, are actual fans of the games themselves. And BY GOD when i first saw this episode a while back, that had me on edge. They did absolute justice to the clickers. So much so, that they made them a literal force to be reckoned with and dare I say it, better than the games could ever make them (ik its a long stretch by that last line I said, but I can't stop freaking out on how good the clickers were in this).
The "kiss" according to the creators is a way to show that the infected are not necessarily violent by nature. They just want to spread and since she did not fight back and was already infected, the stalker just wanted to speed up the process.
I felt the same way as you about the infected 'kiss' at the end at first, but after watching the ep several times I think it's actually brilliant. The runners not necessarily being as violent and infecting non-resisting hosts as efficiently as possible ie straight through their mouth or ears without needing to overpower and bite them is a brilliant addition to the show and brings an aspect to the infected that makes them incredibly disgusting, unnerving/unsettling, and brings an aspect of body horror due to the violative nature of it that is VERY unusual for zombies to have. I also agree completely about how Tess goes out protecting Joel and Ellie from the horde in the show as opposed to being shot down by Fedra. In the game it works perfectly, hearing her being shot down while you are powerless to stop it is haunting and horrifying and the following shootout or escape from Fedra keeps the tension and pace very high but that would never have worked in an film adaptation. What they did was absolutely perfect for the change in medium. I'm so blown away by what an AMAZING adaptation this is.
So the infamous "kiss." Instinctively, as human behavior goes, we associate mouth to mouth contact as an intimate action between humans. But peeling back the aspect of human behavior and looking at the behavior of the fungus, we can understand better that the fungu's single interest is to expand and spread. Sensing that Tess was already infected, the other infected was trying to hasten the infection for Tess and the fastest way to do that was mouth to mouth contact because the distance from the mouth to the brain is significantly shorter. The funus isn't thinking intimacy, it just wants to expand as quickly as possible.
@@CynReactions No one else is immune, just Ellie. Of course it’s not confirmed but there’s a letter from Anna you can get in the first game that gives hints that she was most likely infected before she gave birth to Ellie. “Ellie, I'm going to share a secret with you, I'm not a big fan of kids and I hate babies. @@reynaldolorenzo8409 Sorry, but that is just nonsense. Every wiki about Anna says that she died as a result of giving birth to Ellie. There are no 'hints' in the letter, just the fact that she knew she was dying. Of course there could be others who were immune.
@@rikmoran3963 Wiki doesn’t mean shit, the game hinted that Anna was bitten. Marlene literally told us that there’s no one else that is immune. The people with more resources couldn’t find someone else because there’s no one else. Why Anna knew she was dying? It’s obvious that she was infected, in the game you have two days before you turn so she told Marlene to either get Ellie out and that would end up killing her or she gave birth and told Marlene to kill her before turning. We will see in a few weeks if Neil remembers the letter but I am pretty sure he wouldn’t forget that if that was his intention so we’ll see and I’ll be back. 😉
I saw a comment from the showrunner along the lines of, "the infected attack because people either fight or flee. What would they do if a potential host just stood there, waiting to be infected?" And that was the origin of the "kiss" scene. The fungus was aware that that was the most direct route to the soft tissues and the brain.
At first, I thought the Tess's scene was weird, but after seeing it again it made more sense to me, she just let it do its thing because if she moves or fights back, it will go into kill mode and she has to be in control as long as possible, to make that lighter work and her mouth is the easiest way to soft tissue for the infected, so that's how I see it. After the episode I saw Niel Druckman write, that they liked the idea of the transfer doesn't have to be violent, they just want to spread, but if people resist, the infected has to force the infection, something like that
You mentioned the sounds of the Clickers being good. That's because the actors who did the Clicker sounds for the game were brought back to "voice" the Clickers in the show. I think that''s part of the reason for the huge success and reception of the show. People from all levels of the game's development were involved in making the series. Can't wait to see your reaction to episode 3!
I loved the game and I love this series now. They did the clickers so damn f***ing awesome! Disturbing and terrifying af! The cinematography, the score, the atmosphere, the emotions ... just perfect! They are so good at building tension. There are so many shots I would love as a picture at my walls. 31:35 I need the last scene with Ellie at my wall

Hey Slayer. Just want to say my life has also been going to shit for years now and I also take pleasure in these reactions. Really hope things turn around for you. Life's a bitch. I'm here if you need somebody, friend.
Sad possibility: Ellie asked how long infected live, because she had to kill Riley after she turned. She was wondering, how long would Riley last as infected, had she not killed her. She wasn't terrified by "wandering around for like 20 years", she was sad about it.
I love your insight. I’ve played the game many times and watched many play throughs and reactions to the show. I must say your breakdowns are one of the best imo. This is one of my favorite franchises and it’s cool to see someone who has as much knowledge on the series as I do
I stumbled upon your channel thanks to these Last of Us reactions and you're absolutely killing it. I love how quickly you caught on to the way the infection spread and how close Joel and Sarah were to being infected simply by avoiding certain food products. It's really enjoyable watching you geek out to so many parts of this episode. The whole 'kiss' part was a bit odd, but I'm at least glad they let Tess go out as a badass. The game version with FEDRA just didn't feel necessary, therefore letting Tess go out vs the true threat felt much more fulfilling. Plus at least she didn't die off-screen. It was a slight change, but definitely for the better in my opinion. I also think that, in this world at least, the idea of a cordyceps patch acting as a trip-wire to alert others works so much better than spores. So far so good. Great reactions so far with terrific commentary from someone who really knows the game/story inside and out.
Makes sense Fireflies would make Ellie count to ten and control her arm. While fungus is spreading through the system, it takes control over the motor/speech function. Like the kid at school in the first episode (he probably did have pancakes) had a weird tick in the arms, the grandma with weird movements and opening her mouth, feeling smth was invading her. Also, the first kid in "20 years later" couldn't speak at all - not a good sign, and he was infected.
Some creative minds won't say who don't like to look into the science side of the infection more focusing on the characters but the jakarta flashback is one of the most genius and interesting additions to tlou lore, how the fungus reaches out of the mouth sensing more to infect is so creepy and fits right into the universe. I imagine they went without the airborne spores in this iteration because having to worry about breathing it in, attracting a horde from a neighbourhood would be a little too much. You were mentioning how you were a little lost on the dried up ones and the active ones; my best guess is the infection is sentient. It prioritizes the ones who are more successful and leaves the less successful ones to become living sensors for as long as possible. I could be wrong but that makes the most sense to me
37:30 The part where FEDRA storms the State House in the game never made any sense for me. I mean, the street in front of the house is completley blocked on all sides by walls, fences and wrecked vehicles, it's heavily damaged and flooded waist-deep and yet, as soon as it's out of sight, FEDRA somehow manages to invade the place with multiple trucks and half a platoon of soldiers? That moment felt like a severe plothole to me.
I love love love your reactions! I'm hoping the surgery goes well for you and I selfishly hope that this new format actually works out for you so i get even more great content in the future
While perhaps gross to you, that kiss made sense and was very necessary, the infected individual realized that Tess had been bitten, he was helping the infection speed up with the "kiss" (tentacles), and seeing as she had a neck bite, the fungus was taking control of her motor functions, that's why she probably could only attempt to ignite the lighter, as well as not able to fight that dude off of her.
I love the world building too. Most of the changes have been terrific. The kiss was gross (worse than normal PDA:), but it ramped up the horror of the Cordyceps. The Clicker scenes gave me so many anxiety flashbacks to the game. I can't wait to see your reaction to the next episode, It's very different.
I kind of dig the idea of the kiss, I feel it's the infected reaching for some of its humanity and Tess giving in to her turning somewhat, slowing the pace of trying to make the lighter work.
There's a very interesting video I saw the other day where a doctor reacted to the first episode. He did say that, to be fair, the fungus should be more interested in getting super close to the person and infecting them without injuring them because the host is supposed to still be alive. A bite would still work over time, but the preferable situation for the fungus would be more like what happened to Tess: The infected got really really close, the fungus was able to come in direct physical contact with her, and that's one of the more direct ways of getting it into her respiratory/circulatory system without risking killing her. Edit because I realized I didn't say this part: I agree that the kiss was a tiny bit unnecessary. It was uncomfortable and I'd have preferred something else, but I thought that it was interesting how it kinda worked with that medical background.
It's also possible, because Tess was infected near the neck (And the poster in the first episode said that's where infection is the fastest, I believe 15-20 minutes) she was starting to struggle with her motor functions, so she couldn't resist, the one that got to tess "knew" she was infected and was just trying to speed the infection faster. She wasn't resisting it, so it wasn't violent.
You’re quick….i didnt connect this grain factory to the baked goods in first episode. I didnt even notice how many times flour items were mentioned lol
great reaction and analysis. Love your insight on the changes from the game to the show. As a person who never played the game, I am really enjoying the insight. Do you have a Patreon with full video unedited reaction video?
Ellie had to be bitten again because there are no spores in the show that she could inhale to finally convince Joel. In the game, this happened in the subway station. Joel needed his mask, Ellie didn't. Ground Zero was featured in TLOU2. It was the hospital where the Abby fought against the rat king. At least that was ground zero in America. The rest of the world, in my opinion, was never covered in the games.
they went with the tendrils underground and them knowing where u if u step on them instead of spores bcause spores r unpredictable amd can be spread for miles in the air
I know why they did the “kiss” but that doesn’t mean I liked i anymore out of all the things that I love in the series this is definitely something I could’ve lived my life without seeing
Tess' lighter is an exact replica of Sam Drake's (played by Troy Baker. He also played Joel in the TLoU games) lighter from Uncharetd 4: A Thief's End. Source: Neil Druckmann, Troy Baker, and Naughty Dog's social media accounts.
They went ride or die with this ‘Mother Nature reclaims the Earth’ aesthetic that films like Studio Ghibli and games like Zelda championed, painting the world with lush nature, foreboding loneliness and an immeasurable scope and scale, as they were the most difficult to master, at least according to Neil Druckmann himself. I am in LOVE with the worldbuilding here.
It's a bit of a plot hole that there is a lot of effort in episodes 1 and 2 to reinforce the premise that there is no potential for a cure and yet Ellie is the MacGuffin "potential cure" driving the plot.
It's not necessarily a plot hole. It's implying that the existence of someone like Ellie is so mathematically improvable that these scientists don't even consider it at the time. The scientists are speaking in absolutes, which is incorrect of them, but I think it's supposed to hammer home that the idea of a cure is so far-fetched early scientists won't even consider it.
Science isn't rigid. New discoveries can be made that can completely made people reconsider what they knew before. Happens all the time. Ellie's immunity is almost a miracle, that's why no one even considered it. Just goes to show just how damn significant her existence is, and that there might be a real shot to figureout a way to fight the Cordyceps Brain Infection. So yeah, definitely not a plot hole.
How is it a plot hole? In those times it is believed there is no potential for a cure. Does that mean scientists would give up searching? That's not what scientists do. How long have we been searching for a cure for cancer? So Ellie may be a macguffin in a sense, but a macguffin isn't a plot hole. The truth is scientific facts are being proven and disproven all the time. It's not a plot hole. It's how the natural world works.
I highly doubt they planned on going through the 1st game in one season. Because in the off chance it was a hit they would want to milk it for all they could right? I imagine there would be a cliff hanger ending. Plenty of room for more flash backs. Unless they planned to do the whole 1st game this season and then spend 2 seasons fixing the story for the 2nd game since it was done so poorly that it just pissed most people off out the gate and with the show they could give more back story and flesh things out so people can understand. Think I am keeping that vague enough to not go into spoilers but yea.
It has been confirmed multiple times through interviews, set photos, and shots from trailers that the first season will be the whole first game. They didn't know if they'd get picked up for a second season, so they wanted to tell the whole story of the first game in the first season. It isn't officially confirmed but Mazin did mention that he thinks that the story of Part 2 is so complex and large, that he sees it being two seasons. And he thinks the game is terrific. Will there be changes to facilitate the story being adapted into a different medium (just like they are doing with the first game)? Yes. Is there anything to "fix" like you said... No. Part 2 is great as it is (pacing issues on Day 1 of the second half + some V E R Y minor gameplay things aside). And he said that there probably won't be much covering the gap between part 1 & 2 (doesn't mean that there won't be flashbacks like there were in the game. He's just referring to adding extra stuff in the years we didn't see). Did that moment upset me? MASSIVELY so. It is the most I've ever cried at anything. Was that the intention? Yes. Because this is a story about more emotions than just happy stuff & fan service. Did I keep going so I could expereince the whole story, see how I feel, and form a complete opinion instead of throwing a hissy fit or harassing the developers? Yes. Did I see what they were going for and did it work for me? Yes. The game has enough in it as is that it is successful in what it set out to do (a story about love, grief, differing perspectives, and letting go. Among other things). Tl;Dr: The first season is the whole first game + DLC. The second game might be split into two. There is nothing to "fix".
I mean, its subjective, but the 2nd game's story was definitely not done poorly, and doesn't need "fixing". Just look at it's success. And it definitely didn't "piss most people off". Just a very vocal minority.

Ground Zero was featured in TLOU2. It was the hospital where the Abby fought against the rat king. At least that was ground zero in America. The rest of the world, in my opinion, was never covered in the games.
Maybe Tess was being affected by the fungus already? That could be why she didn't move to grab a grenade or something
This episode was intense and I loved the clickers part.
This episode was directed by Neil druckmann the writer for the game
Have you noticed that the rifle here is the same shit as in the video game?
The grenade is not capable of igniting gas.
i agree, i would have taken the truck, but also a few grenades
The clickers were played by the same actors that mocapped them in the video games.
Nah cuz I love how u respect bellas pronouns
they went with the tendrils underground and them knowing where u if u step on them instead of spores bcause spores r unpredictable amd can be spread for miles in the air
I know why they did the “kiss” but that doesn’t mean I liked i anymore out of all the things that I love in the series this is definitely something I could’ve lived my life without seeing
FYI this episode is not in the TLOU playlist
I heard that the first season of the show will cover half of the first game. but I could be wrong on that.
It's been already confirmed that the first season will cover Part I and Left Behind.
any chance of adding subtitles?
I think tess (on screen) has a 1941 style replica zippo lighter.
Well Neil Druckmann directed this episode... sooooo have a talk with him :)
A Billie lourd lookalike
1968 would have been the year of Joel's birth
You are always so beautiful in every video you do. Now I get to watch the best show based on the best game with the best streamer :)
love
Tess cheating on Joel in her last second of life

So yeah, definitely not a plot hole.
you must hate fiction if plot contrivances for the sake of storytelling bother you that much.
Part 2 is a masterpiece of a story/game. Stop.
