Duhan van der Merwe is a rugby union player, who plays as a wing for Edinburgh Rugby and Scotland. He was born and grew up in South Africa, and qualified for Scotland through the three year residency rule.

Who is your favourite South African playing for another country?
Cheslin kolbe its my favorite player in rugby
And you my friend
can you give me a dedication
Cj stander
Sale C Sharks
This guy is freakish good. He is going to go a long way in his rugby career. Respect from Fiji..
Unique blend of size, power, and quickness puts him in the elite of world wingers right now. Imagine if RSA had kept him and they could field Koble and him on the same team.
He could just add to the talent we already have! To have a beast like him as an option would be awesome!
He can never play for South Africa. He is white.
Bruh, half of our team or more is white.
He had Dutch ancestry yes, but his family has probably been settled in RSA for centuries.
@@Rbcop1 some of our best players are white... you slipping buddy
He's really added that missing ingredient to Scotland, that's for sure.
Scotland are genuinely credible contenders for the first time in 30 years. Russell, Hogg, Van de Merwe, Redpath, Watson, Graham...What a team!
Now they can finally stop saying..."This team are going to do something really special" (like they do every year) and ACTUALLY DO IT!
Hope so.
😂😂😂 for the wooden spoon. Again.
Thanks for this. Would love to see a vid of Hamish Watson 💪
0:45 get out the way ref😂
Incredible athlete. Athletic proportions are spot on. Looking forwards to seeing more from him.
Glad scotland are finally getting a solid squad and winning test rugby
Beast! Man is hungry, knows how to run great lines like Habana, but can tackle and bump off defenders like the bigger wingers (Savea, Nadolo, Tuilagi)
I have a feeling Duhan Van Der Merwe could have played for his home country South Africa. But it is always a pleasure watching him play the Six Nations. Incredible potential like Louis Rees Zammit.
Is another good player of many are at that level. Thanks
Duhan Van Der Merwe be a beast!!!!💪
Brilliant player well done Scots.
You are an id1010
True the black government destroying everything and completely racist the only country in the world with legal racist laws... 🤣
Feel sorry for them, SA was great.
What the hell are you talking about?
46% unemployment rate. Anti the 8% of the population cause they have "all the jobs "
What a player 😍
I'm picturing him in a football uniform, running over tacklers , sprinting down field , TOUCHDOWN, crowd goes wild 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤘🤘🤘🤘, he looks good exactly where he is , the man is on beast mode, hope he has a long career🖐
Yea but he plays rugby instead, a real sport
@@Arrica101 👏👏👏👏👏👏
It's a damn pitty, this is the curse of the blessing we have in South Africa 🇿🇦 tooooo many talent.. you can only pic that many players.. even if you still brilliant, some who were selected were just that much more of what the coaches were looking for. But wow, what a talent he is !!!! Very special player, he'd of made a great bok
Scotland’s Lomu 🏴
You mean South African lomu
He from SA man his brother is Akker van der Merwe
@@dayl1586 But he plays for Scotland...
He's ours now, 🏴
They should call him "the Teflon Winger"! (Defenders just don't stick to him, he shrugs them off like they're not there.)
Muy bueno me gusto me gustaria que manden videos de takles fuertes
Wow !!!
That’s super wow !!!! 👏👏👏
Yep - the Calcutta Cup is now shared between Edinburgh and Johannesburg - 6-months each!
Not sure any supporter of an international team can make that joke.. Unless pacific islander 💪🏼
What an athlete.Gifted. A tank with NOS.
Man i thort this man was a Flanker
Some much SA talent playing outside of southafrica
The was his head keeps Level in the First scene is an awesome cameraview
0:43 the ref gets owned hahah
“Your man!”
never heard of these ladz
I think the Morden winger is becoming a bigger stonger person that can hold his own even if being slightly slower
Kolbe... hold my drink
@@simorf yes I never said that that style of play wasn’t good or effective I just said there is a lot more now than ever
Kolbe: hold my Web Ellis cup
Everybody is probably going to say Kolbe to disagree with you. Which is fair because he is amazing.
But I don't disagree with you necessarily. I just think modern rugby teams are looking for balance on their wings. If you have a big, slower, power type wing on one side you probably need a smaller, faster more agile type wing on the other.
It gives teams more differentiation in attack so they can cause different problems for the opposition. Just my opinion
Van Der Merwe is not slow at all guys.
Isn't this Mr Incredible?? Looks like him!😳
As an Englishman, I've got to say, impressive! Got to be in the Lions squad at the very least, if not the starting 15.
He is the closest to Jonah Lomu that I have seen in a while. WOW!
How? He is only 100kg.
Doesn't look like it against good teams
@@RealNzlord I though he did pretty good recently. He will still grow in confidence and technique, I hope. But he is a very strong runner and he makes you work for it. Lomu also struggled against some teams, for example South Africa, but that opened up gaps for other great players around him. One must keep that in mind as well. Admittedly, I have not seen many of his games.
@@jldp24 I mean he’s 106kg which at 1.93m is quite solid considering it’s mostly muscle.
@@lp6111 he is not that big...he had small legs. Itd probbaly built up size. When he ayed varsity cup he hardly stood out. When he played u20s ..same.story. he was a beast at.school level for Outeniqua. He couldnt make it at Mo.tpeliier or Toulon. Im not hating on this guy..he moved to.Scotland and.is.doing well there..but its all overhyped.
Would love to see, South Afrika, against Scotland in a rugby match.
Could see RSA vs RSA on the Lions Tour with so many South Africans playing for the Home Nations now!
Boks would still run over scotland. Go Bokke!
Rassie should be ashamed of himself for not picking vd Merwe for the 2019 World Cup team.
Maybe Rassie had his hands tied by those genius ANC politicians?
Ah from his type of play you can just tell he played rugby at pta...
He came from George
Right played for the bulls age group sides after he left George but never cracked the nod for the senior side. He was always injured to be fair to him then left for France and eventually found himself in Scotland. He is doing great for himself personally I think it was a great career move.
Johnny Bravo
Wow!! Power and speed 💪 in huge doses of it ..he could play any position from 6 to 15 I suppose
Song?
First time I saw someone push a ref...
0:42 F's for referee
Reminds me of a young George North.
Anyone know the music?
Maybe one day he will play for South Africa A.
Can't happen. He is capped for Scotland so that is the only national team he can play for now
@@Arrica101 South Africa A is not a national team. He can still play for them.
Another SA player. Can’t blame him...
What does SA mean?
@@MetalDoraemon6 south Africa dude
This guy might be the only winger capable of defending Joshua Tuisova
Nah im scottish myself but tuisova is just different breed 🤣
He's quick but not Zammo quick.
Get him on the plane for the Test Series
His ability to out run through a gap while still attempting to tackle him is due to his running form. Iv noticed he runs past or over an opponent already accelerating in that direction, side stepping way before he comes into contact with them or while he's punching the hole, giving him full acceleration and power.
Most players side step off 1 foot right before contact to try and confuse opposition and this gives them less power to punch a hole as they're coming off 1 foot.. just my observation. I used to play League.. I only knew how to run straight and had a good fend and small left foot side step. This guy is fckn unreal
What! My god...
imagine him collides with north
North would go off for a HIA.
Nathan Mitchell yeah coz you get to 100 international caps by being injured all the time 🤦🏽♂️😂
What's awesome is he plays for Scotland.
Lucky Scots
Reminds me of Joma Lomu
Such a shame the Bokke lost him... so much talent just lost and gone because of the sad state affairs in South Africa
Bokke won the World cup and Rugby championship without him. He is not missed
Very true, huge testament to the amazing talent pool in South Africa and how amazing of a coach Rassie is.
Kolbe easily the worlds number 1 wing. But to say Duhan is not missed is just silly. Why wouldn’t we want more top notch quality wings like himself in the ranks for the future or if Kolbe and Mampipi ever went down.
@@TheLogicalRevolution We don't know how he would have fared in SA seeing that he wasn't liked back here or even in France.
Reason I say this is because there is a phenomenon where "Good" players go overseas and shine to become superstars.
Think of a guy like CJ stander, he was good but not the best here went overseas and shone brightly for Munster and Ireland. After which Saffas started saying "Such a shame he is not playing for the Boks" during a time when we had Vermulen, Flow, Kolisi, PSDT, Du preez brothers etc...
SA has brilliant wings. Nkosi, Kurt-Lee, Mapimpi, Stravino, Davids etc... Reason I say we don't miss him is because he wouldn't have been selected at wing.
The show goes on. We produce talent every year. One player ain’t gonna hurt us at all. There is enough talent in SA bud. Plus we just won a World Cup so clearly we have talent
That’s a fair enough argument. But I guess you said it yourself we don’t know how he would have been.
The main point made was it’s sad to see the talent go overseas when they had the potential to be a great asset to the Bokke.
This is all what if’s, and to your point there is plenty of talent to pull from across the board in positions still back home. But again if said trend were to go the extreme, eventually we’d see a decline in the Boks performance if top level young talent keeps going overseas.
Why doesn't this include the tackle he missed v France in the 2021 Six Nations which cost Scotland a try?
was vdm covering 3 man over lap? perhaps you should look more closely next time?
@@20165776YEAR I don't need to. I saw VDM fail to use the touchline as a defence and try to fly into a tackle rather than stand the France winger up and make him turn back inside where the rest of the Scotland cover was. Something that you'd learn as a junior player.
...The Scottish Jonah Lomu! ....with a South African flavor
Duhan McMerwe 😂
Lions tour for this guy
😂 he's about 5th choice at best. Zammit, Adams, May, Watson all better than him.

He plays wing. A position we've always been good at. Replace Chelsin Kolbe? He probably saw he couldn't break in the squad and moved.
The Lomou of the NORTH!
No specific criticism of Scotland, but the sooner World Rugby tighten up the eligibility rules the better.
Piss off! We have 2 Pro teams. Only a few thousand players at any level. England literally have 1000x more players
@@MrIncorr3ct Thats not the point. A national side should be based on home grown talent, not a global recruitment process. It’s not just Scotland, most nations have exploited it. The rules are the problem. Change the rules. Also, lest you forget, Scotland were very competitive in the early eighties with no overseas talent.
I think it should be if you were there since the age of 15 or have spent 5 years in that country you can represent them. 3 years is way too short
Still in a losing team against the Glorious Welsh😇😇
Didn't he get tapped by Wales' slowest back last weekend, after having a start on him? Just curious like - the camera never lies......
Can't believe he chose to play for Scotland instead of The world Champions: Springboks!! Imagine how the team would've been if Rassie called him for the squad. What a MAJOR downfall!
More the fact the springboks completely neglected him. And plus you have players like Mapimpi and Kolbe.
a shame he plays for scotland
To have such a large beast of an option in the backline would be great for us. Luckily we do have some good depth anyway.

Another big loss for Springbok rugby, like so many others the past 2 decades. What a shame. Oh yes, quota systems, how could I forget.
The quota team that won the work cup hey....
@@en4902 that was something no one would have expected. I put it down to a mastermind coach, that did his absolute best to work with what he had. Like someone without a couple of fingers that can do what those with 10 fingers can do. Jonah Lomu reincarnated.
Two hand van der Merwe. 😂
If Scotland attack coaches have any sense, they should be trying to get him on or near the ball at every opportunity. Takes more than one to stop him most of the time, even if he is used as a decoy to draw in defenders - more space should come for Russell to pick passes and get the likes of Hogg and Graham in more space.
bad hands maybe. we didn't see to much of that.
Finn and VDM's first conversation was apparently "give me the ball and I will sprint"
Great player, glad a fellow Saffer is doing well but some really poor defending and awful tackling gifting him a lot of tries. You NH guys need to learn how to take down big wingers!!
Does he come from the Clan Der Merwe, from West Lothian? Aye, a good old Scots name, that.
Lothian has a lot of Anglo-Saxon blood. Clan Fleming has Dutch origin. He looks Scottish.

Got bunned by rees zammit though didnt he?
He would get flattened tho in a 1v1 tackle tho so win win situation for both
3 year eligibility residency rule is far too short..
I agree. The country's school and club systems helped to get him to where he is and it doesn't seem right or honest to just poach players like that for national teams.
